PS4 Update 2.50 “Yukimura” Preview: Suspend/Resume and More

PS4 Logo

While developing the PlayStation 4 system, our hardware and software teams relied on feedback from our community of developers. The result is the most innovative and forward-thinking gaming console in the market today. Since launch, PlayStation has continued that trend of listening to feedback by bringing some of the most highly requested features from the PlayStation Nation to PS4 with each of our system software updates. When we unveiled PS4 two years ago, we announced Suspend/Resume, a feature that would enable PS4 users to jump in and out of their games faster than ever. This has been a feature gamers have been excited about since then, and today I am honored to officially confirm that system software update 2.50, “Yukimura,” will soon deliver Suspend/Resume, as well as a number of other requested features to PS4.

Suspend/Resume, which will be supported by nearly all PS4 titles, will create an atmosphere where your games are immediately available at any time — just pick up your DualShock 4 wireless controller, hit the PS button and get right back into the action of your games. When it’s time to log off, simply put your PS4 in Rest Mode and when you power up the next time, you’ll start your game where you left off. Spend less time getting into your games and more time playing them.

Here are some of the other highly requested new features and changes coming soon in “Yukimura:”

  • Sub-account to Master account Upgrade: Users with a sub-account will now be able to upgrade to a master account directly from their PS4 when they turn 18, removing restrictions for chat, enabling users to fund their own wallet, make purchases and more. Currently, users can upgrade their sub-accounts online at https://account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/.
  • Facebook Friend Search: Gamers globally have jumped into PS4 as a redefined social gaming experience and connecting with friends over the network is a huge part of what makes the PS4 community so special. PlayStation now lets you go even bigger by connecting with your Facebook friends on PS4 using your linked account. Search for Facebook friends who are PlayStation Network members and build on the foundation of Friends you already have in your list.
  • Remote Play & Share Play at 60 fps: For games that support 60 fps, the ability to customize the frame rate of Remote Play and Share Play will be added with “Yukimura.” Play to your bandwidth strengths and use this option to stream gameplay at 60 or 30 fps when using Remote Play or Share Play on supported devices.
  • Accessibility Options: “Yukimura” introduces a wide variety of options to make their PS4 entertainment experience even more accessible. Options include text to speech, enlarged text, bolder fonts, higher contrast UI, zoom for displayed pictures, invert colors on screen and more. Users will also be able to reassign buttons for DualShock 4, making it easier for users with limited manual dexterity or limited reach and strength to play.
  • Trophy Improvements: We have received a ton of feedback to improve Trophies. In “Yukimura,” a screenshot will automatically be captured at the moment a Trophy is earned, making it easier than ever for you to share your greatest gaming moments with your friends. We’re also adding more sorting options along with the new ability to remove games from the Trophy list that have 0% completion.
  • Share Video Clips to Dailymotion: When sharing standout PS4 moments via the Share button on DualShock 4, “Yukimura” will allow players to upload directly to Dailymotion.

Stay tuned for more information on “Yukimura” and, as always, let us know in the comments how we can continue to improve PS4 to make it the best place to play.

  • I’m already 100% happy with the state of my ps4 but these improvements are phenomenal. You guys do a lot of hard work and I just wanted to say thanks :)

  • Hope there’s an on/off for the Trophy screenshot feature for those who don’t want to be clearing out hordes of unwanted screenshots from our PS4 HDs.

  • Nice but I was expecting more useful things rather than needless ones.Had already seen the leaked info about 2.50 though.
The suspend/resume option is nice and a screenshot automatically being captured at the moment a trophy is earned too…now I won’t need to get ready to take a pic when I get plat on game.

But how about an option to choose if you want bronze, silver, gold or plat screenshots to be taken?…it’ll be a lil annoying having to delete a lot of pics I didn’t even wanted to be taken.

How about adding friends online/offline notifications?
An option to put a comment above your profile like on PS3.
View trophies without needing of syncing and moreover without internet.
When in a party, notifies the other members on it when someone else without headset is writing in the text chat.
Avatars…all the ones we bought available on PS4 to change whenever we want and also avatars to buy on the PS4 Store.

A question…why did you guys named this Yukimura?….ha funny my avatar is Sanada Yukimura…lol.

  • As a blind PS3 user having to memorise the PS3 XMB, having a PS4 Text to Speech would greatly increase my ability to get things done on the system. I hope that the entire interface talks once the update is released. Someone said in these coments that only messages and party talk. Great, but what about the store? What about the main menu?
All of these things I want talking some day, and I hope that the majority of it will be talking come the release of this update.

  • When will we be able to watch video from USB or DLNA on the PS4 like we can with PS3?

  • Thank you for the 0% trophy removal.

  • Sony your doing great, funny i want from be a Nintendo guy only to xbox always again’t playstation period, But After ps4 came out i decided to finally give sony a shot and i’m glad i did. I just hope that sony adds skype to ps4 one day that would be very fun. thankyou guys and keep up the good work.

  • Bring feature so we can make our own themes

  • If you’re still reading this and taking suggestions then here are mine:

    1) CD and MP3 compatibility if possible
    2) Ability to download files from web browser to HDD
    3) Ability to play custom tracks while playing like PS Vita
    4) Add profile customization features like the Vita banners
    5) Twitter and Facebook apps tailored for PS4 experience

  • I don’t know if its possible but it would be nice if you could change the beep sounds that play when the PS4 turns on/off and instead use sound effects for a game. Also an option to disable trophies for a gameplay session, so if a friend plays on your account, they will not be earning trophies for you.

  • I’m excited for the suspend/resume! But when will we be allowed the option to change or alter our username?

  • the ability to use a DS3 or DS4 with a vita for remote play would be a good feature. i believe you can with a PSTV.

  • Tell me when friends are online and ill be happy!

  • The assigning buttons feature will help me a great deal. Thanks Sony :)

  • Allow us to import the avatars we bought on the PS3 at least. Or simply allow us to buy them again. I have friends including myself that switch to the PS3 to change avatars. Yes, i’m aware that the PS4 allows you to assign images, but they are not permanent all around just friends list. Avatars designed for the system look better than just random images or facebook ones.

  • I would like to see in a Playstation update is that I can have the option to use a external hard drive to either save my game data on or do both let me save a whole game from the psn store and lets me save game data to.. the reason why I brought this up is it would be easier to download games off of psn store then bring my originals to someone place or if im on vacation I know you can swap out the hard drive but some people who don’t really want to do at all a external would be best.. bottom line Xbox has this technology why doesn’t PlayStation you would be a double threat…

  • How about the ability to use screenshots as a background?

  • A new interesting feature: Change the PSN Region, there are a lot of users wants that! Me too.

  • Still waiting on open Bluetooth support…

How does PS3 have this and PS4 doesn’t? Why isn’t this being addressed?

  • Thanks 4 the update.
Im excited for & appreciate “most” of the new features

    BUT,
    I see NO REASON
    why we dont ALREADY have
    “LAST GEN” features
    on this NEXT GEN BOX
    made by FWD THINKING Sony!!!
    –>
    Features such as:
    *online friend alerts
    *DNLA
    *video chat
*the ability to CHANGE your name for a nominal fee.
    ($10?)

    These features
    (& others that ps3, xbox 360
    & “Xbox one” do HAVE)
should’ve been present at launch!!!!! ???
    **
    Whats taking SOOOOO LONG??!

  • Hmm… interesting list of updates. My own suggestion in reaction to the Facebook-Friend-Search is to add similar integration for Google+ Streams. I’d also suggest diaspora, but that might be a little too complex.

To those asking for DLNA support the Plex application is in the PS4 store. Granted the Plex Media Server’s file name requirements are a bit of a handful. I’m not exactly “happy” with the idea of renaming tens of thousands of songs and videos for Plex playback; as well as issues with special editions and featurettes that Plex cannot handle.

In respect to DLNA coming to the PS4, I’d be very careful to avoid the same media-file lockout that crippled the PS3. I was more than slightly annoyed to find that media files that crashed out over DLNA… played perfectly fine from an SD card, a compact flash card, a memory stick, and a Fat32 formatted hard-drive. While there are certainly some political elements within Sony that don’t want to openly support some formats or some media transcoding programs because of illegal associations; the legal precedent has been set with VHS, then DVD, then HD-DVD, and then Blu-Ray that consumers have the legal right to make and leverage backups of content that they own.

  • DNLA support! its something the xbox had that you don’t!! Its the only reason my PS3 is still around! You need to make the PS4 be able to stand on its own, and right now its not! So please add DNLA support! and please make it so the PS4 can play any file type including MKVs. Don’t just match what the PS3 could do, improve upon it!

  • Ran into the character limit.

Last bit: something I’d seriously suggest for future PS4 firmwares is to add native support for EXT(4) and btrfs formatted drives. With USB attachable drive sizes increasing past ~4TB of space the limits of a commonly used Proprietary File-Format system become more and more readily apparent.

Support for EXT4 should already be in the BSD base of the PS4: https://wiki.freebsd.org/Ext2fs

btrfs support… not so much. Most of the core BSD developers are happy to have Oracle ZFS; and tend to get a little rude when asked about adding native btrfs support (https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/btrfs-in-freebsd.36607/).

  • We need a filter to sort through our download list. I have all 3 systems and been on ps3 since near launch in 2006 and for 9 years now I have tons of stuff in my download list. Near 2000 now to sort through. That is a pain to find anything when you just tnrow everything all together in it. We need a sort function to separate stuff in our download list. Its been 9 years now since ps3 launched and we still have no download list sort filiter. Yeah you guys sure listen alright. You’re lazy is what you are. Lazy to bring what we ask for and need for 9 years now. Get it done already! We need it!

  • YES!!!! Bring on the Update!!

  • Be nice to see a Skype app on ps4 and the use of video chat like ps3

  • Dear PSN network there is 3 important request that people ask , my friends many PS owners i know

1- name change ( I ALREADY KNOW YOSHIDA SAID BASICALLY : “NO” due to focus on other stuff.

-2 next update you guys need to add the alert when a friends is online, come on, its been too long now

3- add “SLOW MOTION ” to Share Factory ( this is an easy one )

    have a nice day

  • What about setting screenshots or downloaded pictures as wallpapers like in last-gen? I recently took a screenshot of Dragon Ball Xenoverse for a background and there was no option to set it as the background. I talked with some friends about it and we’d all like to see it in the future.

  • Will there be a feature where you can hide/unhide purchased games in library? Currently if you tried somthing you didn’t like there is no way to hide it and after awhile you have to scroll through a lot of games just to get to the one you want. Would be nice to hide individual ones and then be able to unhide if neccissary or maybe keep it simple and allow to hide/unhide deleted purchases so you can at least hide those and unhide i know right you want to download again. Please let me know

  • I would like to see blu ray and dvd disks to be controlled the same.

  • It would be nice to have compatibility with the PS3 Bluetooth headset and Blu-ray remote or at least the release of equivalent peripherals.

  • Please please please add notifications for friends who get online…like “(user) is now online” as a notification

  • These are all fantastic features Sony. Now if I could just get a blu ray remote that would be too sweet. Also bring those playstation four themes from Japan over to the U.S.A.

  • What about 60 FPS for clip recordings? Or is 30 FPS the limit of the PS4’s capture card?

  • how about the ability to list game in one goddamn folder? everyone wants that

  • I’m still hoping for backwards compatibility, I have a lot of ps3 games I would love to play on it

  • It’s great to see all these awesome improvements but will there ever be an Appear Offline feature?

  • Sony and where is the Media Player , and Wallpaper on the Screen and I Would like to have the Blue light instead of the White please . That 2.50 is not that much really but the first time when PS3 came out the infraestruture from PSN was much Better.

  • I lol’d on comment #44.

  • Good, Good was an update to change the nickname, everyone would love.

  • Any news on remote support for ps4? How hate can it be to add Bluetooth remote support as it exist on ps3?

  • Sort of off topic but I don’t know who else to get a straight answer out of.

How about releasing an update to Binding of Isaac: Rebirth to be up to date with the PC version? It’s getting frustrating playing on an outdated version with bugs and trophy issues.

  • Remote Play needs about 150% more attention and more compatibility amongst different mobile devices. I have the newer PS Vita and can’t stand the rear touch pad like many other people, but DS4 still can’t connect to it? It was one of the major reason I decided to go with ps4 as my new console. Being that I’m always on a tablet or phone and I love gaming on those, remote play was big for me. So much potential but such limited support, and vita virtually gets no love. Step it up Sony! Please!

  • I wish this included custom backgrounds, but the upcoming Spotify update will be awesome! I think these are progressive steps. Some things that I feel are missing are DLNA support, a more customizable interface (something like the Xbox’s “pin” system), and a biggie: external hard drives. I will upgrade my internal hard drive soon, but it hasn’t taken me too long to fill up the original 407GB, so I’m sure with more game and larger games on the way it won’t take long to fill up another 500GB if I upgrade to 1TB internal.

  • My main request is the following…

Enable cross-party chat between Vita and PS4 players. Example – There are many times when a friend of mine is using remote play on a PS4 game, and he can’t communicate in party chat from the PS4. He can join the party, but he can’t speak whatsoever through his Vita to the other party members.

  • It would be nice to see a PSN screen name change one of these days. It makes absolutely no sense that Japan has had it for years and yet the U.S. still doesn’t have it.

  • Are there any plans to improve screenshot quality? The current JPEGs aren’t very good. I believe XO now uses PNG.

  • can we please get a fix for the party chat privacy setting message popping up every time you switch games or in cod every time you enter and leave a lobby.

  • Still no video from usb?

  • 2 features I would like to see eventually… Enhanced support for Bluetooth headsets (an example being the currently incompatible CECHYA-0076) for voice chat. While the Pulse is nice and all, having something lightweight is nice during extended gaming periods.

This one is a long shot, but DS3 support. Again, lightweight and more durable. Also I find L3/R3 to have a better response due to a lighter button press required. Yes, I am aware of losing the touchpad and share button, both are features I seldom use anyway.
