PlayStation Network Update

UPDATE: PlayStation Network is back online. As you probably know, PlayStation Network and some other gaming services were attacked over the holidays with artificially high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. This may have prevented your access to the network and its services over the last few days.

Thanks again for your support and patience. We’ll provide any further updates here.

***

The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. Multiple networks, including PSN, have been affected over the last 48 hours. PSN engineers are working hard to restore full network access and online gameplay as quickly as possible.

From time to time there may be disruptions in service due to surges in traffic, but our engineers will be working to restore service as quickly as possible.

If you received a PlayStation console over the holidays and have been unable to log onto the network, know that this problem is temporary and is not caused by your game console. We’ll continue to keep you posted on Twitter at @AskPlayStation and we’ll update this post once the problems subside.

Thanks again for your patience.

  • I’m still unable to sign in to my account. I got a PS4 for Christmas, and now I’m starting to regret asking for it.

  • I have been issues with PSN connection for awhile now, at first it was my network but I have fixed and now I when I go to check my network status I can’t even sign-in to PSN. This is really absurd. I have done every suggested action that has been asked for to do and its not signing in. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Still dos not have network. I think Sony should be giving some kind of compensation for this period without network. How many disappointed kids that can’t play there games over the Christmas period before they go back to school.

  • I agree we should get something in return for all this waiting

  • il servizzio al cliente non si fa’ con le promesse o con parole ma con i fatti…..quando va tutto bene nessuno dice niente ma e’ quando va male che si vede la vera forza di una societa’

  • Man its been working smoothly for me yesterday today. At this point for those of you who say its not working. It’s you guys, go power cycle your router, turn on and turn off your playstation.

  • che delusione…. forza ragazzi tutti a comprare xone

  • I am still having issues connecting to psn via my ps4. This will be day 5, so i read online that its up and running and all my friends that i can contact can log on, but i am still having issues with it. error code (NW-31194-8) has been the constant error. saying ( the connection to the server has been lost.) is there something that i am missing? able to connect to Netflix and internet via system but nothing else when it comes to PlayStation store or network.

Anyone have a word of advise??

  • Still no phones being answered for PSN support, no live chat, and no answers from Sony;

Everyone file a small claims case individually within their respective states and counties of residency against Sony.

    Needed information:

    Nicole Seligman
    Sony Corporation of America
    550 Madison Ave.
    New York, NY 10022

They must either hire an attorney to defend each small claims action, settle or not show up in which case you win for the damages your asking. Cost of system, pain and sufferring, i.e. mental anguish, lost wages, cost of system etc.
Hit them in the pocket book. This I only say to do because of their total lack of customer support. Its not their fault they were hacked, but lies with regards to the system being online and not providing ways to contact are another.

    Good Luck

  • Today is 29/12 and i can´t logged in to my psn account , it´s been 4 Days now !!! what in hell are they doing at psn ?????

They can take my PS4 and PS3 and put it in there ass :( !!!!

  • Thank you to everyone who posted how to get on the network for the ps4. It most definitely works. :) thank you blackknight687, QwietStorm, iScripter, Chymiro195 and whomever else posted it.

  • Sony will be to blame is systems are compromised with regards to the supposed MTU code fix being posted on this very Sony Blog that they provide and monitor. Their silence in this matter will cause even more problems for them down the road. A company cannot bury their heads in the sand and ignore their paying customer base and allow further damage to be done. So Sony, if this fix your allowing to be posted on this blog is not recommended, reply to such.

  • this is now the 5th day i can not sign in with my ps4…. i have been very patient. but this has become ridiculous now. a couple days down is understanding but this is going onto almost a week now. i am paying for a service and getting nothing in return. i have spent over $1000 in the past few weeks on the console, ps+, games etc… the customer service should atleast give a time of when ill be able to log in and just saying “we are working on the problem”. i mean i think everyone would naturally assume that you are working on the problem and sitting home playing with your christmas presents. then again maybe you are sitting home playing on your xbox live…

  • che delusione,che amarezza….

  • io sono possessore anche di x360.per fortuna con quella gioco alla grande…

  • your Twitter page says that you will be compensating all customers for their frustrations and grievances due to the hackers. Is this true?

  • Changing the MTU in and of itself should not affect your overall ability to connect to PSN in the future.

What it is, is as I said before, some people can get in the first time, some people can get in after several tries.

Changing the MTU essentially makes the data you send each time you try smaller in order to try to fit yourself into any openings there might be.

However, there are issues with lowering the MTU such as functions of PSN not working if you lower the MTU beyond certain amounts. Or possibly being blocked for DDoS-like activity (though you shouldn’t be able to get that low with the in-device settings and even if you could, you’d need to do a lot of surfing to really trigger such a thing).

Also, don’t expect Sony customer support to always tell the truth. They have their own rules on what they can/can’t say. Just like any other company. These rules vary by company.

  • @2450 the only thing sony owes you guys is to make up for the lost time in PS+ nothing else. DDoSing isn’t security breach and cannot be prevented you can only mitigate and filter out the flow of traffic. If the DDoS attack was able to take down Live for a long while then it could’ve effected any other company the same as Sony that don’t have a huge server farm or infrastructure. If lizard squad decides to do it again you bet that they will use an botnet with even more volume and the attack will be even bigger. DDoS attacks work the way the internet works, they follow the rules of the road, except in large amounts of heavy data traffic and clog up your front door so you can’t get in. Some of you should do research before you make claims. Also PSN is up right now at this point its you not Sony. Power cycle your router and modem let it rest for 5 minutes.

  • “Please understand that we reserve the right to edit or delete comments for any reason we deem appropriate. This is a moderated blog and comments will appear if and when they are approved. We will review the queue several times daily, so please don’t resubmit if your comment doesn’t appear immediately.” Sony’s policy

A company cannot bury their heads in the sand and ignore their paying customer base and allow further damage to be done. of course followed by their all supposedly encompassing disclaimer,

“The opinions expressed here are not necessarily the opinions of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) and we assume no responsibility for such content.”

The all encompassing disclaimer does not protect them when the first paragraph clearly states monitored and approved.

  • This works for the ps4 to sign into the network;

  • I would just like to thank PlayStation and its employees who are working on this problem. You have taken time out of your holiday and time with your families so we can simply play games, then again if its destiny they miss, they aren’t missing much ;). Please ignore the negative comments against you as this isn’t your fault, you didn’t attack yourself. Again i thank you for the years of great games and hope you have a merry Christmas and good start to the new year.

  • This is ridiculous, I was able to sign in and play this morning and now its gone again. I knew I should of bought an Xbox One.

  • PlayStation 4 for sale open to offers 12months PSN would like to think buyer will get some time out of it before it expires

  • I understand that things happen, however the fact I paid for PlayStation Plus and lost many days of of service doesn’t change. Members should be showed appreciation for subscribing and given something in return. I myself own a I.T. company and reimburse my customers for services that are lost for any period of time. Think about your customers and not just your bottom line Sony. After all customers are what keeps your bottom line afloat.

  • tumor,

they are not to fault for a cyber attack. They are at fault for not giving timely and accurate information to its subscribers. They are at fault for not providing a means to contact them. They are at fault if the fixes listed on this moderated blog which approves submissions compromises existing systems because they choose not to say anything. Playstation is a great product, but no company or individual can charge someone for a product or service they are not receiving.

  • Why do we pay for a service Playstation cant fix? Are we going to get a refund on this lost time?

  • Anyone that needs or wants to redeem your voucher codes, if you cannot sign in via your console, try doing so via the online PlayStation store via a computer with a browser. I have included a direct link for your convenience.

    https://account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/cam/account/giftcard/redeem-gift-card-flow.action.

I hope that helps those having trouble with this issue.

And if you want to get in on the free PS Plus games and you are new, remember you can always purchase said free games via the store and set them to download to your console when connectivity resumes.

  • my playstation still does not work so I’m gonna trade it in for an xbox one. SIMPLE AS THAT!

  • ba9_tumor, I would like to thank sony for spoiling my xmas I worked all year to provide my kids with gifts they wanted and when I was meant to relax and reap the rewards of greatful kids I ended up dodging flying controlers and angry kids hyper with all those sweets that are no good for them. so you enjoy your holidays sony while the rest of us that keep you in your jobs and pay your wages sit at home languishing in how do I put it someone elses mess YOURS

  • +shorty1493 OMF I LOVE YOU !!!! It worked ??

  • @2482 you mean lizard squad not sony

  • I still dont have psn i can watch the wwe network but i can log in to play games this is getting nuts.
If it wasnt for mlb the show i would be switching consoles

  • Thanks shorty1493 done this and it worked but a few comments say this is not advisable, don’t see why myself as this can be changed back but my gripe is the lack of communication from Sony on this matter they cant take our cash then head of into the sunset and think we should accept this level of customer service maybe they should employ Lizard squad for next xmas and save us all this greif

  • @Bobbo6646

Even if you claim that it is “your” fault and not “Sony’s” fault, the truth of the matter is that there are people who can connect fine to xbl, who have done all the proper actions (cycling their modem, router, and systems) and still either can’t connect at all or can’t use certain functions.

Some people can connect, some people can’t, some people can connect with limited usage and/or modifications.

So if you think about it, maybe it is Sony’s server side that is the problem and not the people’s client side?

That said, Sony might not owe us some great amount, but the fact is that compensation for at least the active PS+ members affected would be a good step. And decent compensation would be a good sign of good faith/good will.

What Sony is really at fault for is giving out misleading information. Not just this time but several times now. In this case, online means online for some, not online for everyone, not necessarily even online for the majority.

  • Shorty1493 it worked but will changing the MUT to 1200 affect anything like gameplay etc
