As you probably know, PlayStation Network and some other gaming services were attacked over the holidays with artificially high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. This may have prevented your access to the network and its services over the last few days.

The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. Multiple networks, including PSN, have been affected over the last 48 hours. PSN engineers are working hard to restore full network access and online gameplay as quickly as possible.
From time to time there may be disruptions in service due to surges in traffic, but our engineers will be working to restore service as quickly as possible.
If you received a PlayStation console over the holidays and have been unable to log onto the network, know that this problem is temporary and is not caused by your game console. We’ll continue to keep you posted on Twitter at @AskPlayStation and we’ll update this post once the problems subside.

I still can’t sign in on my ps4. everytime i try it says it lost connection to the server. Before the attack i had no trouble at all logging in and its been two days since psn supposedly came back online.
OK I still can’t get on line I reboot my router waited 10 minutes and even called Comcast to update my firm ware it’s not on my end it’s on yall to fix

Okay, the whole situation sucks, yes; and it should be fixed by now, of course.
But you can still play some of your OTHER OFFLINE GAMES, you know. We all have more than 1 game to play. Also, you can still do some other OFFLINE stuff.

Super annoying Sony! You say it’s up when it’s not? I can only do so much with kids before they get bored. I’ve been a Sony guy since the PS1. We have a PS3, a PS4 and the PS Vita in our house and you’ve gave us no REAL update since you said it was “back up” (which it isn’t). Us CUSTOMERS deserve a REAL answer.

The network has been up and running for 2 days and I still can’t log in. I can log in to the website, but not on the PS4. I keep getting the error message NW 31194-8 and it telling me that the connection to the server was broken. Everything else that is using my internet has had no problems connecting at all but the PS4 refuses to connect.
Look like all of us are having issues still. They keep saying psn is online and I still haven’t been able to get online. How much longer do we have to keep waiting? Atleast give us better updates on what’s going on. We spend a lot of money to be your customer we should atleast be kept up to date better

For anyone still doubting (like me 10 minutes ago) that MTU change works. The mistake I made was NOT switching off the console after changing the settings. SO go through the motions, change the MTU the switch of your ps4 and switch on again. It works. I just played Dragon Age Inquisition Online. Again: I did this method THRICE and it didn’t work because I DID NOT reset my console. Finish with a restart and you’ll be just fine. It works as a temporary solution.
SONY STILL NEEDS TO GET MOVING WITH THIS REPAIR! But thank you @Disco_123… this helps a ton for now.
Still not working for me with a direct Ethernet connection and 50Mbps down speed I am getting sick of the following message: “cannot connect to PSN within the time limit. (CE-33987-0)”

I played last night from 2a to 5a. Turned it off got back on this morning and nothing
5 days and I still can’t sign in…and I just got a playstation card to get a game that’s on sale and I can’t even get it and the sale ends today I’m pretty sure!
I also reset system to factory settings. That is what made it work the first time.
It’s frustrating because I am able to log onto my PSN account through the PS4 web browser! But, since the 24th, I have not been able to log in on my PS4.

I signed out of PSN first, did the above steps changing my MTU to 1450, tested the connection which of course fails on the PSN sign in but should be successful for the first 2 tests. Then go back to your PSN in [settings] and sign in as usual, this should then work.
Anyone just reading this for the first time, look up a couple of messages to find the instructions on what to do. I’m playing destiny now so trust me it works!
