You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.
PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.
- USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
- Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
- Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
- Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
- Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
- Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
- Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.
Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.
PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation
The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.
PlayStation App 2.0 update
The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

This is a decent update but its still coming way slow compared to what the competition does.
Also the Play area updates aren’t near enough to satisfy what gamers want. It should be completely customizable Sony. I should be able to decide exactly what tiles/games/apps show up on the row. Yea that even means being able to banish stuff like your guys Sony Music tile I never use and the camara demo app that takes up space even though I don’t own one. Folder support Sony so I can make one like the Video/TV one that expands below for my game selection as an example. If the Vita can gets folders the PS4 should be able to do it too.
No one also talks about better support for the VIta. I could to full backup and storage of games on the PS3 but none of that exists for the PS4 yet.

Glad to read about the updated firmare features. I’m one of the many hold-outs in purchasing a PS4, since my PS3 “Only does everything.” And is the center piece of my 7.2 home theater.
After much research as a Sony fanboy, I understand why now the PS4 doesn’t do everything as most of the DLNA functionality has been integrated into SMART TV’s and thus redundent in the ecosystem. Though my 70″ XBR2 isn’t smart.
My home theater is getting upgraded this spring. XBR-70X850B or KDL- 70W850B depending on the amount of my tax return and a Playstation 4 since I will be preordering Grand Theft Auto 5. Though I going to bet my PS3 will remain my center piece until all of its functionality can be replaced by the new SMART TV or PS4.
Keep the features coming Sony.
Will we be able to save music to the hardrive?
Any particular USB stick is recommended for use on PS4 when this update becomes available? I have a ton of WAV & Mp3 & FLAC files i’d like to use at optimum speeds.
I have some suggestions for future updates! (Sounds like a good update by the way! Can’t wait)
1. Add Skype
2. Fix bugs because it is laggy on ps4 when you have 200+ friends!

When will we get the pause and play feature (going into standby mode while a game is playing and when system is turned back on your right back where you left it) waiting for that one since launch .
Will we be able to save music on the PS4’s hard drive? Also will games such as WWE 2K15 be able to import music to use for theme music?
For the PS4, will we see the return of being able to turn on multiple audio output setting from the PS3 for us game capture card users? On Twitter, Yoshida said you guys knew about the problem, so are you guys finally going to address it? Because please do so ASAP to make game capturing easier! :)

DNLA support is what I want over anything else. I would also love more control and the option to Down laid HD trailers of the games.
I also want to be able to show pictures on the TV through the PS4 like i could on the PS3 I have a FAT PS3 and I love the card readers. I have used them so much over the years.
Can we play music while playing a game?
i think it would be cool if you did something more with trophies. Like if you unlock a certain trophy you get a new profile picture or a new theme backround or something.

Hi,I have some suggestions
1. When you planning to fixing or improving,update something…. just post a Message to notification area,one or two days before. This will help us to planing something else to do.When I spent two hours to reach the final boss and start to eliminate him…. suddenly I am rejected from the game and need to start from beginning – to spend another two hours. Just won’t notification to planing do not play that day or night or hour.
2.When you do something like this from above-mentioned Don’t count Psn+ time. (I have one or two days/night per week to play – past few weeks….. I loose some of these days -server maintenance ,but Psn+counting)

Are there any plans to let us organize the ‘recently played” line of icons? Having moved to a fully digital library, I now have over 40 games on my system. I would love an easier way to find my content they just scrolling to the right. Even the Library section lists things in the order they were installed, not in a way that makes it easy to find things. Keep up the good work.
Is there any way you can verify that this finally gives users the ability to follow people on Twitch through their PS4’s? It sucks when you get hundreds of people and the common reply is, “I can’t follow you since I am viewing from my PS4.” Thanks for the awesome preview, by the way!!
Any chance of DLNA? + Why can’t it be possible to save MP3 music to the PS4’s hard drive(like the PS3 does)? How odd that is. Good update tho ;)
Great additions, but it’s been a year and it still can’t replace my PS3 as a media player. DLNA support is much overdue, Sony!
Can’t wait for the release, great job guys. I hope it’s out before GTA5 makes to to PS4, that is a major release in my calendar. Just wished it would work with my Sony Z2, but its better than nothing.

I see that the content area is being updated, but what I really want is to be able to sort my games into folders (like I can already do on PS3, Wii U, phones, tablets, etc.) Is that feature going to be a part of this update? Please say yes.

Thanks for the update! I’m totally excited about themes and music play. Now I can play Destiny with my Gold Headset on blasting my tunes.
Out of curiosity I have a question on its functionality. I usually have my Xperia phone plugged in to my PS4 just to charge since it’s close. If I left my phone on USB data mode would I be able to play music off the internal or SD card memory? I would assume to the PS4 it would behave just like a USB flash drive.
Finally Back Up feature. Hope it also comes with a Restore feature like the PS3 does and hope that means I can back up data on an external HDD to put into my 2TB HDD whenever I get that.

With the increased functionality of the library, would it be possible to add a shortcut to it whilst on the home screen? Something like R2 to the library (or to the end of the list) and R1 to skip 5 items? With the L shoulder buttons doing the opposite?

I’ve had a few problems on PS4, being a completionist it sometimes takes me awhile to finish games before moving onto the next one that I have downloaded and/or installed. I have lost all my Capture screenshots and videos when I had to delete my user in order to avoid syncing a game on my profile that I’m not ready to play yet, however when deleting my user, my PS4 did not warn me that would be the case and just let me continue with the process of deleting it ready to make a new user and sync my profile to it.
Now this would not be a problem is 3 things were in place;
1. Ability to delete 0 trophy games synced to my profile. I wouldn’t have to even think about deleting my user and can live without fear of accidentally pressing X on a game and starting it.
2. Add folders to the XMB so I can put games in them so it isn’t stupidly long much like the TV & Videos part. This will also avoid me even playing games by accident all together and complements point 1.
3. Adding a more detailed warning when deleting a user to include the fact you will lose ALL captures i.e. screenshots and any videos tied to this user/PSN ID.
Please sony can you tell Humble Hearts to update Dust An Elysian Tail? The game its broken, im almost at the end and after a crash, in the last save spot you hit the character everytime i load the game it spawn on a surface above the save spot and its stuck, no way to get out of the glitch. It sucks, im not restarting the whole game again.

Would there be a future update in which we can play our ps3 digital downloads on ps4? Reason I’m asking is our accounts are the same on both ps3/ps4, so why we cant play stuff from our ps3 library?

Another issue of top of my head that is no where near as serious is regarding the BBC iPlayer app, I would like the ability to watch any given channel on there live as it is happening rather than having to wait after it has finished and watch it on catch up. I can watch stuff live on my phone on this same app but I would like the convenience of being able to watch it LIVE on my big TV and not on a small phone screen.
Also, I was under the impression that 2.0 would bring direct upload to YouTube?? What happened to that? This update seems really lacking for how long it has taken to get released.
will this take up any space on my ps4? i don’t like to waste any space especially if like disc games are taking up gigabytes on my system like destiny is taking up 21 gigabytes on my ps4 that’s ridiculous
