PS4 System Software 2.00 Preview: USB Music, Home Screen Colors

You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.

PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.

  • USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
  • Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
  • Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
  • Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
  • Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
  • Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
  • Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.

Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.

PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation

The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.

PlayStation App 2.0 update

The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

Stay tuned for more information on Masamune. We can’t wait for everyone to try it!

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

  • will we be able to change the theme music at the ps4 menus? it kinda breaks the mood while playing battlefield.

  • Nice new features, but nothing really important for me.
i wish, we get the standy by mode like PS3. The PS4-Standby is annoying, because the console is like turned on in this mode…even the fan is running.

such a mode is useless and while i don’t want, my console is 24/7 in this mode with internet connection always on, i turn it off. but so, i cant’t use the auto-update-feature from PS+
why not the way of PS3? the console turns on at a specified time, searchs for updates und turns off.

  • Can we get an update on suspend mode?

Are there more features in 2.00 that are still unannounced?

  • Nice to see a lot of highly requested features, will this update fix problems with friends lists and party connectivity? Also on an unrelated note why isn’t playstation network backwards compatible. I get why the console itself int but why not PSN? I just want to play all my digital games on one platform, like the Jak HD collection or Dust without having to pay for them again.

  • Great update, but please update your psn servers their horrible. I am paying for a reliable server that I am not getting.

  • It’s pretty lame that you guys won’t let us use our own images to make custom backgrounds. Also, why do we not have a Youtube app or HBO Go app yet? That’s pretty ridiculous. Coming to PS4 from the Xbox 360, that is a major let down for me.

  • will there ever be a “Change-I.D”? Would love to see that. Probably plenty of people would pay to change their name.

  • What about Notifications for when friends login??? I don’t understand why I need a notification for when a friend joins a party, and yet I don’t know when they login.

  • I can’t wait to put on some Greg Laswell and slay some orcs!

  • Let us pause the DOWNLOADS!

  • Not sure if this was in the list but worded wrong but can we get a option to create folders on the home screen? I would like to put all the games into a game folder etc.

  • Will this update let us use the dualshock 4 on vita remot play ?

  • “Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.”

    Why no random option?

  • also yeap friend log in notification!

  • Can we please get the option to delete 0% or any games we don’t want to play anymore as well as a fix to the error that force closes our games.

  • Will there be a bluray firmware update? I’ve noticed that the ps4 doesn’t play nearly as nicely as the ps3…

  • Was just wondering how long will the update take just came home and I’m not able to play destiny?

  • it’s better that u fix the stability on psn instead, it’s terrible and has been for a while now.

I dont have a ****** internet ( using fiber directly from the wall socket, so no routers etc).

  • when are we getting Logitech Harmony support and a robust blu ray player?

I’m still using my ps3 to watch my movies! c’mon!

  • That’d be really dope if you guys could create a feedback site for us, so we can suggest features. I’m loving the fact that you’re enhancing voice commands. I hope you take that further.

  • Where is the media server????? the one main function why my PS3 is still better than my PS4. also Xbox One has a media server so get to work!

  • Would be nice to have a option to erase the error history, my error history is getting quite long due to all the issues there was on release day.

  • Maybe to look at ways to reduce all those endless amount of error codes, and for the system to try fixing this itself smartly. The big issue for me is that you constantly have to go search what the code means, why not just describe the issue and not giving the exact same line how to fix this for all these codes.

  • This update has an absolute ton of really awesome features, which should satisfy a wide variety of PS owners. Personally speaking, the one feature which I have been craving and am so grateful for is the ability to play my own custom soundtracks whilst gaming. That one feature makes such a HUGE difference when gaming. I have long since accepted that me and game developers have a fundamentally different vision of what constitutes nice background music.

The only thing to ask is, please let this arrive in the not too distant future. I want this yesterday. Thank you for listening, Sony. You have made one gamer VERY happy. Kudos to the team.

  • Will we have to ability to save our music and video to the ps4? Or it can just play but not be saved on the hard drive?

  • Hey! Will there be an update to messaging? Right now it is the slowest feature on my Ps4. Takes forever to receive messages, has a hard time deleting them, Etc.

  • i want remove from library etc……

  • Cool. Does the update include bluetooth headset support like the ps3 has?

  • Its great you are finally playing Mp3 music in games. And now its even in ALL games – better than on the ps3. This is amazing. The first time I can really sign “this is for the gamers”! Thanks at everyone @ Sony who made this possible! Cant wait to play GTA on ps4 while listening to MY “radio station” thru the surround sound setup and optical out of the ps4.

  • Also any word on a release date?

  • Please let me change my psn ID… i will pay for it.

  • What about saving images and music files onto the PS4 surely that would simpler than the USB player, it should be a basic feature in any console

  • I like the new sorting options that we’re getting, any chance of getting the ability to create folders sometime down the road?

  • Sony should be putting 100% of their resources into fixing the PSN. It has been complete garbage since it launched and is down or not working correctly at least once a week. This needs attention and an official response.

  • Cool update. Still hoping we can change our PSN names.

  • hey sony, what’s about make some games for vita? we need a portable game player and not a deluxe ps4 controller

  • Why is PS4 still not able to show when Friends go online/offline? Its just plan inconvenient

  • I would like to have the option on my ps4 where when I download something,I can pause it!!Please, please guys! All of my friends wants it and I’m quite sure every ps4 owner wants it also..

  • Wow those are some nice backgrounds about time for some new ones

  • I would really love if Sony let us get rid of that ugly bubble grid layout on the Vita and TV. Not many people like it and a grid based layout would let us have more games or folders per screen. Thanks!

  • Usb please

  • I’ve been holding off on getting a PS4 until certain tings are added. DNLA (streaming, hopefully MKV support). And does “theme support” mean I can change my background to a picture? Or just change the color?

  • Serious question. When is playstation network going to be back up because it is still broken right now?????

  • I was in a bad mood, but when I checked this blog out, it totally made my day! :) im so excited and happy for this update, thanks Sony for everything you’ve done for us. The only thing I would really appreciate if you added it, which is the ability to notify us when someone goes online on ps4. Please make this happen! :) and again thanks for everything.

  • So this update will fix the problem that sometimes the friends list dose not load?

  • How about PSN ID change and upgrading a sub account to a master account? Pretty please?

  • I can’t help but notice something that’s a little unclear: will there be something like FOLDERS to sort content like the PS3? I have heard also that there are issues with friends lists between the PS4 and the PS3 100 limit that makes finding friends a little problematic.
These are two issues I hope are solved before I commit to buying a PS4. I won’t mention the video issues as that seems already in the works.

  • We’re finally getting music playback support, very good.

Though I’d still like the following features:

-More specifics on what kind of music can be played, etc.
-The ability to view photos (not just screenshots) and set them as wallpaper
    -Video support
-The ability to transfer content between PS4 and Vita
-The ability to copy the music to the console’s HDD
    -Pause downloads
    -Download PS Store video purchases

  • You guys at PlayStation are awesome! Really looking forward to this update.

The only thing I still hope for is friend notifications (i.e. when a friend of yours logs on or off).
