PS4 System Software 2.00 Preview: USB Music, Home Screen Colors

You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.

PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.

  • USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
  • Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
  • Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
  • Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
  • Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
  • Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
  • Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.

Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.

PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation

The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.

PlayStation App 2.0 update

The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

Stay tuned for more information on Masamune. We can’t wait for everyone to try it!

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

  • Thanks for the follow up. Its great to see that Sony is listening to the players.
One question only and its about Voice. Will there be other languages in voice commands? Portuguese, mainly?
    Thank you.

  • i hope in this update u guy add it when are friends log in

  • Here’s hoping they add support for Logitech bluetooth devices like the harmony ultimate. CEC isn’t cutting it.

  • Hey sony this is a great update i love it but when will we be able to change our psn nmaes?

  • Thank You! Looks Great!

  • These are great additions! Thanks Sony.

I’d love to be able to have the option share content (photos, vids, brodcasts) with specific friends. I’ve found myself many times wanting to share a moment with a specific PSN friend but was unable :( Hopefully a future update?

  • Wow. Reading some of these comments and it’s very clear to me that you just can’t please anyone.. I’m happy the music player got added into the update. Would I like DNLA support and custom backgrounds etc? Yes. But I’m not going to b**** about it. Sony is obviously getting around to each of these problems. And at the very least, I’m sure most of you can wait for your other updates. I’m not even too bothered about when this update comes. I’m only ever on my PS4 to play games any ways (no way! :O) ;)

  • Can you please add a notification for when friends come online and offline like on PS3? I don’t like checking my friends list every few minutes to see whose online or offline.

  • Hallelujah! Can’t wait for the update. Thanks!!

  • Cool but no DLNA support is truly upsetting.

  • So can you use you use your own pictures as your PS4 background? If so, does that mean you can save pictures to your HDD?

  • I am uncertain whether or not this will be seen; however, will the themes for the PS4 be similar to the Vita themes? For instance will the background music change depending on the theme? Currently I’m in love with the Four Seasons background music and I would love for this to be implemented for the PS4.

  • Cool. I hate having to scroll through a bunch of crap to get to the game I want. The UI could definitely use a revamp.

  • Please tell me with the update you can delete stuff from your library. I have demos and betas stuck in it that I will never touch again. It is really bad to have that kinda of stuff filling up your library when I would love to have it organized.

  • I’m loving all the new features! Hopefully we’ll get suspend/resume in the next update.

  • Are you guys going to add a Follow Button for Live from PlayStation broadcast?

  • Everything sounds great but just a recommendation add private video chat.

  • I am a little disappointed that we still lack dlna and video playback. I use my ps3 to store all my avchd 1080_60p home videos of my kids on, I really would like to move everything to my 4. Plus usb playback is not an acceptable method for audio and please not for video. Media is where xbox is ahead of you, I just read they got dlna support. Come on guys just give us the same features as the p3 but improved stop gimping us for fear of piracy. Not everyone is using torrent sites some of us buy our stuff legally and use personal content on our playstations.

  • So happy about all of these additions! Now Sony the one big thing that I know many people are wandering is when will you let us change our psn names. I have many friends who would like to and I’m sure there are many people in the community who want to as well. Sony do us a favor and at least give us a clear answer as to weather or not you can do this and if its something that you are working on.

  • So , can we have the feature .. which allow us to change country/region attached with our PSN ID ?????!!!!?!!!!

  • “The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video),
    ____name (a – z or z – a)____
    recently used, or install date.”

Why, after 8~ years, do we still not have the option to sort our PS3 digital library by name? Do you have any idea how ridiculously frustrating it is to locate a game, in a list of more than 200 titles, without alphanumerical sorting?

  • Still no suspend mode? This was a key feature marketed for the ps4 and it’s still not out.. Or apparently planned!

  • I know I’m in the small minority but I don’t care about any of those media features because I don’t pirate music or movies. I can play my legally purchased media on various media players.

However, I feel like you actually listened to me by having a purple background. Yay, more purple everywhere, please.

And, what’s up with PSN? Can’t sign into my PS3 or PS4. My Vita is ok though, oddly.

  • There’s so much great stuff coming in this update that i could be commenting here all day, but…

I hope music support paves the way for a PS4 port of Vib Ribbon! ::crosses fingers::

  • Is psn down?

  • Thanks for the update:

    Can you please confirm/deny folders?

Honestly, it makes no sense for some of this stuff to come out so late. It worries me that we have to wait just as long for the next big update to get a bunch of features that are missing on PS4.

  • I didn’t quite understand what does the “Back Up Data” update will be used for, could you guys please help me? Aren’t we already able to back up all the data we have on the PS4?

  • @226, LionAlliance, yes, PSN is down. At least it has been, and I last checked 20 min ago.

  • when and what time is the update getting released ??

  • Wow, this update sounds like it includes almost everything I would hope for…

The only thing missing the ability to have a completely separate main content area for just games. It annoys me that I have to scroll through apps to get to games. The main reason I use my PS4 is for games, and that is all want to see.

  • Oh one thing I would like to ask for but doubt we’ll get based on your horrible track record is the ability to be able to take png screenshots or uncompressed if you don’t know what png stands for. The compression is doing way more harm then good alot of people actually think graphics are that bad looking. When gamers post uncompressed screenshots with their capture cards people get amazed lots even buy games based on how good screenshots look. Give us the ability to be able to take uncompressed screenshots it’s free advertising for you and the other developers.

  • Why not the color Orange?

  • It’s a start, still waiting for:

-Support for PS1 and PS2 classics via disc and PSN.
    -Suspend/Resume
    -DLNA

    Thanks guys!

  • I like the update yes mp3 playback finally

  • Jesus Christ, this is all awesome.

  • This woman, who’s profile is up, has a rank of 123 stars for trophies. YIKES!~!!

  • No USB video support
    No Vita downloading
    No changing your psn name
    No pausing downloads
    No folders for separating games
Still have a screwed up friends lists that freeze with to many people
NO LAUNCH DATE for the minimal stuff you re offering

What exactly are you guys doing these are major issues that are easily addressed your competition is handling them why not you

  • Is this update today?
I’m also having issues signing into psn!

  • So why can’t music be saved to the Hard drive and streamed from that like the PS3?
    Talk about halfarsed!

  • Info on a YouTube app for ps4?

  • Ok nice finally only took a year!!! Don’t get me wrong I love ps but the thing is Xbox is doing it right with their kinect… Ps move is dumb if I wanted to play Wii I would have got one… so dissapointed in ps… big step back. Also still can’t use by headsets…. wtf!!! It has it in there and will find it but won’t let me use it??? I’m not going to buy your ****** headsets… and we can finally play music on there great all this should have been first day stuff… Ps you are really starting to losee people. Bout ready to sell and go to x box. Only thing I like anymore is ps controller and I can get a model one for an xbox… so get with it!!!!

  • Sounds like a great update but with the new customisation options will we be able change the colour of the light bar on the controller?

  • Can we please get the ability to pause a download? It’s odd that this is even a request, it’s been there since the dawn of the internet and yet ps4 launched without it while the ps3 had it. Not everybody has a high speed internet or better yet, we just want the option the start a download, pause it because I don’t want to take all the bandwidth and then resume the download.
    So please do it.
Again, it seems odd that I’m typing to request such a primitive functionality.

  • Finally! cant wait for this update but it needs to be said, we’re not asking for a date, just a bit more communication.Iit took this long just to announce the rest of the feature set which I was hoping for video support & suspend/resume but still a great update. I hope this post is just to highlight to new features because if we cant pause downloads or see when a friend signs in then there is an issue.

  • So you are listening to the people, right?

Then WHY on Earth you’re not taking care of one of the most basic and most commented issues of your system?

    – The ability to PAUSE and RESUME downloads.

What’s the matter? There are a lot of people like me that have poor internet connections and basically if we download something, we can’t play any online game until it finishes…it could take hours or days depending on the file size. We can PAUSE it, and RESUME at night. It would be wonderful.

It must be simple, PS3 has it years ago. Are you working on this? Do not intentionally delay this issue for commercial purposes please.

    We’re waiting :(

  • You guys need to update your webbrower can’t save any vids or screenshots heck you can’t save anything not even to usb. We want the ability to save to usb and the hdd some of us have bigger hdd’s then the ps4 came with.

  • Will the 2.0 update release before the Driveclub ps+ update is what I want to know?

  • Anyone else notice the stereoscopic effect on the red replies or am I crazy?

  • So wait… if I read that correctly we can only listen to music when we have a USB stick in the system??? BS!!! LET US STORE OUR SONGS!!!!!!!!!!! I am not buying nor will ever buy music unlimited so I hope that’s not your thought. Why do you downgrade your system over time? PS3 had everything at launch, then you took out backwards compatibility, 2 usb ports, now theres no music. I also hear the PSN is down at the moment. That better be working in a half hour when Im home. I had enough of your crap doing maintenance all damn day Monday.
