PS4 System Software 2.00 Preview: USB Music, Home Screen Colors

You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.

PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.

  • USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
  • Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
  • Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
  • Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
  • Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
  • Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
  • Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.

Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.

PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation

The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.

PlayStation App 2.0 update

The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

Stay tuned for more information on Masamune. We can’t wait for everyone to try it!

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

  • These changes are great but I’m kinda disappointed that being able to pause/resume downloads still isn’t there.

  • Can you also add selective game updates. I don’t want to constantly updated all my games where I am playing something different. A notification can maybe appear, but to have an option to update this specific game now or later would be great, especially when you are low on Internet cap.

  • What about Pandora will we be able to play Pandora

  • Will 4 player remote play allow me to use multiple ps vitas as controllers on ps4?

  • More stuff that we didn’t ask for and stuff you promised you haven’t delivered.

  • Guys, we really need to be able to copy music files to the HDD. I appreciate the start, but please make this possible.

  • YES! GO PLAYSTATION!!! RELEASE DATE RELEASE DATE RELEASE DATE!

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please add this simple Feature but important to me its Small but things like this is what makes me happpyyy

    * When you start to play a game/ App… a Notification pops up Saying how many friends are on/playing this game or App at the Moment!!!

    * Friend notifications

    * More Detailed Description on the Friends list screen of what/where your friends are doing in theyre game.

2.0 doesnt have that many features that interest me.. look at what xbox is doing some of theyre updates speak to me and has my interest.. yet i prefer PS over xbox stop Sleeping Sony.

  • I’ll be the 100th guy to say DNLA please.

The friends you might know might actually be okay. Sometimes I get online and play battlefield in a group with friend and all his friends. I suppose if the suggestions are accurate this would be useful for friending those people,

  • When will we be able to change our sign in IDs? I am beyond ready for it.

  • This is nice…BUT we need to PAUSE THE FREAKING DOWNLOADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A simple notification when a Friend comes on. The update the Friends list to have Categories or something! Please.

  • Please add a TWITCH app to the PS4.

  • How about that remote view/play feature that was promised? Sometimes people need help in their gaming…

  • The PS4 is starting to remind me of a Razr phone in 2006 – it was focused on just making phone calls and Motorola was totally blindsided by Apple with the iPhone. I have a PS4 and the XB1 and I use my XB1 every single day because it does so much, it controls my cable box, it has actual multimedia apps – like Plex and even their own media player app works with MKV files, the voice control (for me) is flawless, it just does everything so well. Meanwhile I turn on my PS4 like once a month to see what the new (crappy) PS+ title is – thats about it, it’s not an exciting system and it doesn’t feel alive like the XB1 does. At this point I’m really starting to regret my PS4 purchase – the multimedia functions of the PS3 were great, and they don’t exist on the PS4. The app support on the PS4 is poor, the download speeds are poor, you guys totally blew the launch for Driveclub and there isn’t another AAA exclusive coming out for the thing until next year. Seriously, your sales lead will only last as long as the 1080p hype does.

Get your act together Sony. You’re losing money everywhere else, PS is the only business keeping you guys in business, and that business will go away if you don’t start treating your customers better.

  • Any chance of non Sony Bluetooth headsets being added? We have it on the PS3, and it’s been almost a year now. I would really like to use the headset I bought specifically for gaming.

  • @142 – Spoiled brats? I bought a $400 console from Sony on the promise that it would receive regular updates and features now standard on the last generations hardware. They are raking in the profits and there’s no focus on pleasing the consumer, I wouldn’t be surprised if all of that money is funneling into a game you need to purchase.

  • So we have to have our music on a flash drive to play it?
Also with the youtbue update does that mean that a youtube app will be launching soon too?

  • Username I.D change??????? I’ve been waiting for it for 6 years now…

  • What a joke we’ve been asking for dnla ,mkv, mp3 support and all we get is mp3 a year later. I bet a million dollars you guys only added mp3 support because xbox just came out with it. Someone at sony needs to get fired your doing a horrible job with the updates. Xbox is releasing 1-2 big updates every month and unlike you sony they are listening and they are actually adding what the gamers want in updates and they’re not waiting a f@[#ing year to add it.

  • Love the update but one request that I and a million other uses would love- the ability to change my USER ID!!!!

  • wait when’s the release dammit?!?!

  • Hey! Is there any way to move the Library to the front of the list so we don’t have to scroll all the way to the end to access it? With all the PS Plus games and apps it takes a while to get to the end of the list just to access what I already scrolled through.

Side note: If there is a way to already do this I will love whoever tells me forever!

  • Solid updates!
I do hope for FLAC support as well as the ability to stream from a media server hopefully even in game!

  • This update would be nice…. only if Sony manages to keep it ONLINE!!! Come on Sony!! I pay money for your service and its down at least once a week for a couple hours. Not acceptable

  • USB music player? Is that something people were asking for? I’ve been asking for CD playback since launch and you promised that it was coming. Where is it? I’m someone who still buys CDs. I’m forced to switch over to 360 when I get a new album I want to listen to because it’s not available on PS4. That’s garbage. I can’t believe you’re not adding CD playback. It would take nothing. I would think we could at least have as many features as PS3 had.

  • Give us a date atleast!!!! Its been ages since last update!! Would be nice to get buch of small updates not waiting months for huge pack.. Cmon sony.. And will it be. Possible to change/turn off background music in homescreen?

  • I want cd support! At least the usb thing is an improvement but will there be a cool music visualizer, cause that’s the only thing I miss about my 360, it was good for house parties with loud music and colors on the tv lighting up the room moving to the music, please have a visualizer!

  • Will the copy saved game video files to USB be fixed? Would be nice NOT have to wait 5 hours for a 15 minute video file to copy..!!!

  • There better be friend online notifications. AND GIVE US A DATE FFS jheez guys

  • Still waiting for an update for turning a sub account into a master account. When, Sony, when?!

  • Looks nice but when?

  • YES! YES! YES!

  • So the USB device has to be in the whole time, we can’t store music like on PS3? And we get a few color changes and themes but we can’t do wallpapers? Why can’t the PS4 do basic things the PS3 and PSP could on launch? Speaking of themes thanks for slowing down the transition between Vita pages with the last update.

  • this is all well and good but its not enough imo.
while i welcome themes ,the lack of DLNA ,mkv is huge issue and its on you rivals platform.

but anyway back to this update and the library.
i hope its the firs thing on the list at all times because it sounds like you cant make custom folders like waht was requested.
its just the library folder thats always been there but now u can order/filter it.

update 2.0 and its still way of the mark and way behind MS with the great updates they have had and this is coming from a ps4 lover who got it at launch .

  • are there any plans to add Spotify support or a Spotify app?

  • Can we please also get an option to stop, pause and resume or downloads.

  • I would like to see a more diverse driving wheel compatibility. Support Logitech and others.

  • I would love to have the ability to stream media from my PC/laptop to my PS4. I frequently watch movies from my macbook pro to my tv via hdmi cable. If you could make it to where I can stream it wirelessly, that would be terrific!

  • While it is not native support Plex Media Server does work extremely well through the PS4 web browser. This has been my work around for the lack of native DLNA support for video files. Plex has or is releasing an app for the Xbox family so hopefully they will work with Sony next. In the mean time check it out here. https://plex.tv/

This is a personal ‘must have’ for me as well. I will say that DLNA will be great when it arrives.”

  • When they gonna put skype i want skype back ?

  • Having lived through the entire life-cycle of the PS3, I’ve given up ever expecting to receive the features people want the most. But I can’t wait for the newest Photo Browser that I’m sure is in development!

  • will it be able to also be able to do usb video playback since it supports mp4 or yall are working on it?

  • When are they adding chat audio through the mic and tv speakers simultaneously?

  • But do I still have to cycle through my library to even get to my Library so I can cycle through my library?

  • is the update coming today?
and at what time is the playstation going to be abalable today?

  • Still no media player (but for music from USB). And why the hell from USB only? It makes no sense. I won’t buy a USB stick and cover a USB slot all the time to play my music in my games. Frankly, this is lame. We need to be able to store the music locally on the PS4’s Hard Drive. Also, no support for AAC and OGG music files? Why? The PS3 had it…

So we cannot play videos, we cannot store videos, we cannot access our medias on DLNA… Frankly, I love the hardware and the games, but the Xbox One’s updates are way better, adding a really good media player (including MKV, how cool is that) and even DLNA. They already have music playback too in their media player. Frankly, they have everything the PS3 had plus MKV playback. The PS4 have nothing the PS3 had, nothing at all (but playing music from USB…).

    Hardware: PS4 > PS3
Software: PS3 > PS4 —- How is this possible? An old gen having better software than current gen? This is madness…

  • AHHH I’M SO EXCITED!!! I REALLY hope I will FINALLY have access to all of the avatars I purchased on PS3. I have to turn on my PS3 to change it and it’s in a separate room in my house; it’s pretty inconvenient.

  • Backwards compatibility to just pop in your older ps3 disc and play it.=)

  • PS: Add a PLEX app (like xbox one does). This is a must is you restrict us on video playback/DLNA…
