PS4 System Software 2.00 Preview: USB Music, Home Screen Colors

You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.

PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.

  • USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
  • Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
  • Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
  • Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
  • Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
  • Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
  • Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.

Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.

PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation

The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.

PlayStation App 2.0 update

The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

Stay tuned for more information on Masamune. We can’t wait for everyone to try it!

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

  • will we be able to copy the music from the usb and store it on the hard drive? Will we be able to play videos from a usb?

  • when will this drop

  • Any idea of the time frame this update will drop?! I have been really excited for this and waiting patiently. :D
Thanks for the new features to come! :)

  • Well go to see Sony moving forward in right direction I hope!

  • Still waiting on DLNA support so I can use my PS4 to access my digital content on my PC and other devices… DLNA was developed by Sony, and the PS3 has had this feature for a long time. It’s really annoying to be missing this on the PS4.

  • Still waiting on DLNA…

  • Wow! This update sounds awesome! Can’t wait! SharePlay and the USB Player are the two big ones for me. Can’t wait to use the “Virtual Couch” to switch on and off “The Evil Within”. I’m too scared to play by myself! HAHA! :) P.S: I can’t believe people still whine about DLNA and Folders, yes I want that too; but honestly SHAREPLAY people! :)

  • I didn’t see a green background.. :(

  • looooovvveee it THANK YOU SONY

  • The library enhancements are a start, but really, I feel like it’s the Vita all over again: we just want folders! I want to be able to sort my games into folders like I could on my PS3, like I do now on my Vita (though there being limited to 10 items is a bit of a pain). Please, Sony, add folders to the PS4 so we can sort our games and apps the way we want.

  • You are letting xbox 1 be the better media player when the PS3 was the king over the 360.

  • That about new party chat audio codec?

  • Thanks for the MP3 support!

  • Will it come with a YouTube, Facebook and Skype applications?

  • @Scott McCarthy
Thank you for taking the time to update us. Its a nice change of pace from PS3 where we weren’t always updated on the happenings on our systems. Questions:

    1) XB1 just got DLNA support. When should we expect to be seeing that on PS4?

    2) Can we get more details on sorting options in the library?
2a) Also is the Library being moved next to the What’s new section on the content bar? I’d hate to think those of use without the cameras voice commands would have to scroll through 17 items just to get to what is not installed or currently being played.
    2b) Pinning Games?

    3) I know PS Vita was briefly mentioned and I hate bringing this up here, but as a PlayStation Mobile Developer I’d like to know if our games will be coming to PS4 anytime soon and if so can we expect multi-controller support for our games on PSTV and PS4? I have a puzzle combat game I’m developing that has 2 player action on the same screen. I’ve gotten no response over this.

    4) There appears to be a bug in the messaging system on the App, the PS4, and on the Vita. I get notifications 5 minutes or more ahead of actually being able to see the message. Will this get fixed?

    5) PSOne Classics?

    6) PS2 Classics?

    7) PSP Classics?

  • Where is the Suspend Resume feature that you guys promised back in February of 2013? I would love to have that feature ASAP.

  • Good update but what about dlna?in the meantime long wait for friends list to load and messages sometimes takes almost 5 mins to load not a isp issue either i notice sum days are smooth but since launch they been spotty

  • Eagerly awaiting the ability to play video files. I know these things take time, but I take the arrival of a USB music player as a very good sign. Thank you.

  • PAUSE/RESUME downloads pleaseeee!!!!

  • You’re listening? Awesome I want to change my psn Id without losing my library and trophies. Please make this happen

  • Dear PS4 UI team: Some of us that listen in stereo headphones through receivers need HDMI STEREO 2.0 support, or the mix has a HIGH soundfloor of noise. On the PS3 this was bypassed by directly choosing only Stereo 2.0 options in the sound menu. PLEASE consider adding this option, it will help a lot of us stereo users have the best sound experience. It is important to some of us.

  • this is a nice update and all but i dont understand why we cant import our music to the hard drive and why there is no DLNA support as well.the browser as good as it is needs an upgrade because there are sites that give me a no enough memory message and we all know that the ps4 has ample of ram.

masamune is pretty nice and i think its a step in the right direction but this thing needs more features and apps to make it feel like a true next gen device

  • No DLNA = a slap in the face.

Don’t claim you’re listening to us when you clearly aren’t.

  • What is DLNA support?

  • Please ignore all the DLNA comments as seriously it’s only the kids that want it. Us adults have DLNA players etc. Thanks a lot for all your hard work. I remember when consoles were all about the GAMES and thankfully you’ve given us a console that is games centric. I’m really looking forward to share play and YouTube app… Hopefully it’s soon?

  • This sounds like a great update, yes. I’m very interested in having themes for PS4. It’s great having pre-made themes, but I hope we can use images we have on a USB or even using the screenshots taken on PS4 to set as a wallpaper, and functionally to adjust/crop the image. A cool function to add is the functionally customize profile light bar color, since the light bar can be any color. Also having an “OFF” feature for the light bar would make some players happy, that do not like the light bar and want to conserve battery for their DUALSHOCK 4.

The dashboard, is.. well, okay. I’m not a biggest fan of it, but it could be so much better. Having an organization feature on the PS4 for apps/games would be handy, for example, your favorites could be pinned or simply create folders and moving around apps or games.

Also, with notifications, having to delete them one by one can get a little annoying. Bulk notification deletion would be handy.

  • Solid update, would still love to see folders and way to change your friggin PSN ID. I cannot believe I am still locked into my SOCOM 2 player ID from 10 years ago. Please Sony, pleeeeeease…

  • and DLNA support?????

  • @75 Clown.

  • Science b****!!! -All I waited for is coming!! The most important things are:
    YouTube-App
    MP3-Player and
    chengeable Design
    …..AND THE PS4-APP FOR WINDOWS 8.1 ?!?!?! It´ll be awesome!!!

…but will be there a video-chat program coming too?

  • That is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Awesome

  • YEEEEAAAAAHHH!! I new this had to be coming soon XD cant wait to see whats next! Thank you sony!

  • I believe that you are listening and all of these updates are exciting indeed, but what is that status of the Suspend/Resume feature that was talked about before the system launched? Some transparency on whether or not it’s still a priority and being worked on would be appreciated.

  • Taking your time getting psn back up, i spent 50 dollars for a year to play whenever i want. If iwe had all know about this earlier we wouldnt be so upset. Please just hurry.

  • Ok now please allow us to delete trophy lists from undesired games, Change ID names (id like to get rid of my 23) also play videos on the console via USB files like the PS3

  • Great update but seriously WHY do messages and friends list take FOREVER to load?????

  • When will this update come out!? So excited to customize my backround.

  • Still NOTHING about external storage for games? PATHETIC, xbox one and wii u have it, why we can’t? I dont wanna change my internal hdd, just plug a usb 3 hdd on my ps4 to have all my library at one click to play

  • This sounds good to me, when is this update available?

  • Any word on whether this will fix the HDCP handshake issue the PS4 has with certain Toshiba TV’s? Bought my system 3 months ago, and I still can’t watch disc-based movies, or change the PS4 resolution without resulting in a black screen.

  • Wish the PSN was getting an improvement. Why only background colors? Are themes that hard to do for the PS4? What about the ability to turn OFF the damn battery draining light on the controller?

  • One thing that I would really like is the ability to have my broadcasts not have the awkward grey bars on the bottom and right. I’d like a widescreen video feed of myself, in 720p at least, without any borders. It’s terrible for the viewers to sit through. I’ve actually went out of my way to not use it and now I don’t find much of a use for my PS Camera.

Please Shuhei, let us remove these borders :)

  • Why don’t you just give us a twitch app the XBOX ONE has one why can’t we get the app.

  • 1. External HD support for games
    2. Mediaplayer with mkv support (I know there are Sony BluRay players available that can do that. There is no reason not include it)

  • Looks good, hopefully we get Netflix on PSTV soon as well.

  • This is great and all but there are other features people were asking for before “Friends you might know.” Seriously? How am I going to know people in other countries my friends play with?Anyway… Music Player installed directly into the PS4: This is what we wanted, not to have to carry a USB stick everywhere we go. How annoying! A Video Player installed on the PS4: We want to move our digital movies over to the PS4 to watch, anytime we want. But no, of course, Sony has to try and make users pay ridiculous amounts of money for their own digital movies from their store, which I have never done, and I bet none of you have either. DLNA: Or whatever that’s called. We want to stream what’s on our computers (movies, pictures, music) to our PS4, just like the PS3 did. This is a feature my roommates complain about, and a reason they just replace the PS4 with their 360’s, so they can stream when they’re not playing games. Sony, when you release a product you release it with more features, not features you take away. That’s pointless and stupid. Don’t do this again. Thanks. OH, and I bet these “Themes” will cost money, right? Way to gouge your fans for as much as possible. At least I can pick themes for Steam, free of charge!

  • I require Video player [MP4, MKV, AVI, WMV supported] and an improved web browser that can support/stream these codecs/ file containers.

Once this is done, my PS4 OS is complete. So yeah…. VIDEO PLAYBACK!

  • Please give us Knack for all the Issues in November.
1 Year Anniversary and for the Driveclub Plus Edition Disaster…

    Thank you Sony

  • I’d love to be able to sort games on the crossbar on my own. Having user sign on notifications would be great too. Also, hope to see an HBO GO app someday!

  • I hope they fix the password glitch. So my ps3 ps4 and vita are all protected by a password. I have kids that play and one day while I was at work I received an email saying the funds were added to my wallet. So I checked first thing I thought was I got hacked. Well as it turns out you can add anything to the cart and add funds and it will let you and it will take them from the credit card. Then it will ask you for a password before you download them. So I called sony to get a refund and they were very nice and did it. So please fix this. Make the password before it takes funds out.
