You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.
PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.
- USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
- Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
- Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
- Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
- Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
- Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
- Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.
Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.
PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation
The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.
PlayStation App 2.0 update
The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

What about recording friends voices when doing gameplays
I’m hoping that “easier to sort” your content on the PS4 includes the ability to hide and rearrange the categories to reflect what we find most important. As an example, I don’t want the “Music” category to show if I don’t use it.
So can we download the music on our USB to the console so we don’t have to keep a USB in at all times? Also Is it limited to USB thumb drives? Or can external HDDs be supported with music files?
When will we be allowed to change our psn usernames? Surely it can’t be so difficult to implement.
Scott, can you say something about probability of making uncompressed or not-so-heavily compressed screenshots? Even if you export images to flash-card the artifacts and overall image quality is horrible, many people think that PS4 has very low visuals because of this! I even managed to talk IRL about it with one of driveclub designers, but he does not in charge of console software. Is there a little chance of making option to select image quality, make PNGs? People are buying capture cards to do non-ugly shots.
These updates are great, but why do I own a $400+ system that I still have to have a wire attached to my head.

I don’t get it, why PS3 has better media support then PS4?
We need
1. Ability to play video files ( same as PS3)
2 Ability to store on HDD video, music and puctue files. (PS3 is great media center because of this, and the only reason I use my PS3 and not Xbox or ps4)
4. DLNA support
5. Ability to orgonize all this into folders or add tags.
Pleaser SONY you have good momentum going don’t drop the ball.
Most of this features are available in PS3

Fantastic work Sony! I am looking forward to all the updates as they keep coming along. One thing I would personally like to see as a streamer on TwitchTv is more options for customization. Being able to move the face cam screen and maybe add a graphic or two would be awesome.

Sony the one thing i think everyone can agree we need BAD, is NOTIFICATIONS. I would LOVE to be able to see when a friend gets online. I dont care to much for when they get in a party. I understand it may be an issue cause of the large friends list. The best solution is to create custom groups. Friends, family, VIPs, and last and sometimes least “others” lol but you get the idea.
How about some backwards compatibility?

I know you are pushing MU and it is cool that you are letting us play our own usb music, but it would be really great if you just least everyone have what they really want. Access to our Pandora and/or Spotify! Or give plus members a discount for MU. Pandora One is $3.99 a month. If you could get MU down to maybe even $5 for plus members it might be worth it. I still just like Pandora for the fact that i don’t remember all the music i like right off the top of my head.

I have a question for you it might sound stupid or over played out cause people might be asking for it who own a PS4. My question is when are we going to get where we can play movies off a USB stick I have a lot of movies on my Laptop HDD even Home Movies and I bought a PS4 thinking it could do this but found out sadly I couldn’t it. makes me wish I never got rid of my PS3 if I would of known this I wouldn’t have switched but at last I hope you get this fixed or have it in mind..

Man oh man…was holding out hope for DLNA/MKV support so that Plex could release their app. Guess I’ll be waiting even longer and continue to use the Roku box instead for my media needs. Bummer.

Any news on a privacy mode? being able to log on an not get constant invites is a must, or throwing a sickie knowing knowone at work knew you were just playing the latest game out all day.. Privacy Mode/Offline Mode, whatever you want to call it

Friend notification when on / offline, at least online, make optional
When a message or trophy pops, pressing ps button in a certain amount of time takes you directly to the trophy and message, and only taking up 1/4 of the screen.
PSN ID changes! ‘Mikaelkid17’ was cool 7 years ago when I was 14 and a kid!
Quicker messaging!
We as a community will be extremely happy once these features are included, don’t make many of us think we chose the wrong console because of the slow messaging, and features that your rival has had for years.

I can’t upgrade to the PS4 until it can do all the things my PS3 can do. I don’t mean play PS3 games but have all the same features and apps. You’re not upgrading otherwise.

This is a great start. Thanks for listening to the gamers. Can’t wait to see more content added to the PS4. I hope you guys bring PlayStation Home to the PS4 some. I know a lot of friends who use the service daily and will not upgrade to this gen until they know for sure its coming to PS4.

Having an “Add to Library” button on games available for PS+ subscribers feels like a half-measure though. Each month, I need to remember to come to the blog to find the next releases. I wish these were added to the PS+ tab of the store on my PS4!

The ps4 is supposed to be more powerful than ps3, it should have no problem handling these things. Other than that good job with this update. I know it’s not a complete list but if you add these feature a lot of people will be very happy.
Can I play music on the PS4 with my Walkman Media Player? I’m asking because it acts as a USB flash drive.
This is all great, I’m looking forward to the new features. I want to add my vote to the following wish list items:
– DLNA Support (Airplay would be awesome). I know it’s coming.
– More responsive Messaging – having my phone buzz or getting a notification on the screen and having to wait for the message needs to be fixed.
– Increased PSN stability. Being new to PS and PSN, I was surprised at how often the PSN is offline.
– Trophies that sync automatically to PSN and the mobile app.
– Friend online notifications
– Set online status (busy, do not disturb, available, away, appear offline)
– When a notification shows up (message, trophy, etc…) press the Playstation button to go directly to the notification. Having to dig through a bunch of menus is painful when you want to see what trophy you earned or see a message.
It’s a good solid list, however, why is there no video playability still? And is the music playing option only limited to in-game play or can it be played from xmb without any games/ applications running?
The great thing about PS3 is that it does serve as a media hub of sorts, and naturally I think PS4 can benefit from this too. More local media related functions would be greatly welcomed. Great start with music player though.
@trmbne2014 good question. I have a sony MP3 walkman that i use as my usb flash drive on my smart tv. hoping i can use it on my PS4. it reads fine on my PS3 whenever i use it.
Now this in particular is where its at for me, this will probably come out around the holidays.
