You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.
PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.
- USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
- Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
- Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
- Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
- Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
- Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
- Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.
Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.
PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation
The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.
PlayStation App 2.0 update
The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.
Stay tuned for more information on Masamune. We can’t wait for everyone to try it!
* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.
Really need DLNA support. Also how is the emulation for psx and ps2 games coming along? (If its even happening). Having to swap back and forth from my ps3 for media streaming and backwards compatability, is really getting tedious. Xbox One had dlna support straight out of the box and backwards compatability would be the icing on the cake in my honest opinion. Ps4 already kicks the arse of xbox one, but these added features would surely secure future ps4 sales for years to come? Microsoft did a piss poor job getting xbox games to run on the 360, so can’t really blame them for not including it this time round, but sony have the best game selection spanning back to the days of the psx. Its just a shame that it wasn’t an option on the ps4 to start with.
Hi there, few quick questions.
1) Understand in this update music files will only be played via USB, does this mean plugging in an Android device wouldn’t work or is this purely for USB memory sticks? I would have thought putting an android device in MTP mode would do the trick? – As a side question to this, will an update video files at least be added in at a later date? I loved being able to transfer video files onto my PS3, even if it just works in a similar fashion to the new USB music player mode – that’d be awesome. OH, DLNA would be great too!
2) In regards to themes, it’s all looking very nice – so kudos firstly! – But will there be functionality to transfer your own images/backgrounds onto the PS4 (as again was possible with ps3?)
3) In regards to PSN – I completely appreciate the reasons why this is now chargeable, I’m amazed it was still kept free on the previous generation frankly. But considering we do now pay for the privilege of it, in instances like this week where it’s twice been down (when I’ve so badly craved to play on destiny haha) are days added back on to the subscriptions of those who do pay?
Really look forward to the update anyway, and please, oh please – keep up the good work :)
Thanks!
this is good but please do something to play video files as well which can support mkv and MP4 and avi formats as this machine can support all the formats due to its power…… best machine ever made in gaming history i have been a fan of Microsoft always but switch to sony now please do something to support video files via usb or external harddrive we can watch movies through that anywhere we want to….
will share play also allow you to co op via the vita? very curious :D
Player -1 ps4 and player -2 vita
When we be able to view trophys offline like PS3

We have not yet announced a date. That said we don’t want you guys playing some of the biggest games of the year without the biggest update of the year.”
By this i assume the update will be out before GTAV?! awesome!
i also hope Sony fixes the very slow loadings on friends list and sending/receiving messages takes ages on PS4.
Any news on the “resume from standby”-feature?
I’ve just looked on PlayStation system software on Wikipedia and it says the release date is October 2014 but not a specific date, finally cant wait so not long to go now thankyou
And i always knew you was releasing these big updates ready for GTA5 and advanced warfare etc it was obvious. Is there any news when your ps3 friends can see when your online because that’s a must for me
One of my favourite features from Playstation was uploading your own music from a CD onto your PS3, but now you have your Sony Music app I doubt we will be getting this back on PS4.
Is that something you will look at in the future or is it dead in the water?
Didn’t the PS3 do a variation on the color scheme based on the time of day? That would be kewl. :)
Tbh i think everything what the ps3 can do will eventually come on ps4 like a lot of people want dlna but sony has already said that wont come out untill 2015 so it’s just about being patient and there not going to release everything at once because it’s got a 10 year lifespan so it’s about playing the waiting game
Soooo when are you going to finally fix the Vita download list? Or are you just going to continue to pretend the Vita doesn’t exist and not support it?
Usb for music, come on let us put the music on the hard drive so I can rip my music cd’s on the ps4 just like the ps3.Who came up with this idea?
Hey I was wondering if somone know if there is going to be a Twitch app for the PS4?
Philippines is still not included in creating PSN. Theres no Philippines when you select country.
Sony – Will you marry me?
Okay, fine… only more of the usual awesome hanky-panky then. Just turn off the light.
No, seriously, I hate having the controller light permanently on – very annoying with screen reflection. An option to turn it off would be sweet.
I await your response Re. matrimony.
And still… no answers about our NEED of external storage for GAMES!
Already one year and… No DLNA! How to buy a pig in a poke…
In the future, I will not buy a day one version or not a Playstation. I am very disappointed with Sony.
Some important updates are expected… The release dates of the games are always delayed. And so on …
I stopped hoping.
Please can sony and logitech sort out support for their wheels. i have a logitech driving force gt gathering dust cos ps4 isnt compatible yet even tho its a licenced sony product
Does Anyone know if this update will tell me when my friends sign on and off of PSN, rather then just who is in a party so I don’t have to go to the dashboard and check to see who is online?
Please! I’m hoping we are able to put games into folders, and categories. FPS games would go into the FPS folder, same with scary etc etc. It kind of gets hard trying to find a game when you have so many.
If that idea wasn’t in the list, please put it in it.
trying to be patient. need…………..this…………………UPDATE!
thats all fine and dandy but i would love to see when my friends actually sign on/off!!! this shouldve been included day one!!!
can you add a YouTube app please
Is there any talk of instituting more robust Parental Controls on sub-accounts? I’d really like the ability to hide games and apps from the library, or at least lock them, on my children’s accounts. Also, the option to choose online access on a game by game basis would be great!
Now, when you say you’re adding MP4 compatibility to the PS4 does this mean we’ll be able to watch videos like we could on the PS3? Because that was one of my biggest disappointments with the system is that I couldn’t do that.
When I read “Enhanced Voice Commands,” I got excited. I was hoping for Netflix and Hulu+ (and other apps) to utilize them for “play,” “pause,” “next show,” etc… It’s the one feature that’s missing that’s holding me back from buying the camera. If those commands are ever added, I’m ordering one.
Majority people would like to change their screen name. I don’t think they would mind paying a small fee to do so either. Maybe $5.00? Any chance this happens in the near future, or ever?
Will PS3, PSV and PS4 finally be able to play Free Lossless Audio Codec files?
please sony i want to see trophies offline on my ps4 .. is it that hard ?? even the ps3 and vita can do it why not the ps4 ?!
Blue tooth support?
All I can say is upgrading from a PS3 to a PS4 was not a very good experience. Yes the graphics are better and has more power. But that’s it.
I would like updates to bring more function over prettiness. How about making networks more stable?
Wow…great update. And even better code name
So while the USB music sounds great, I have not used MP3s since Kazaa and Napster were a thing. With services like Spotify, Pandora, Raphady, all my music is not in a downloadable form but streamed. I know these companies have to make an App for PS, but would be nice if someone from PS Business Development would reach out to them and encourage them. That or make the Playstation Music Streaming app have a lot more songs that are not Rap.
What about Arabic language, people in the middle east is looking forward to it. I’m tired of translating.
It is going to be such a pain to put all of my music on a flash drive. Should have been possible with a cable.
I need to translate every step to Arabic in order to have a friend add me. Imagine helping a friend troubleshooting an issue.
I have an important request that I forgot to mention in your previous post ; In the next update, please add the option to change the button from ‘O’ to ‘X’ for select/enter option in the home menu of Ps4.This is important for me because I have the habbit to enter/select using ‘X’, but since my Ps4 is japanese I have to use ‘O’ to accept/start any game or option and have to press ‘X’ to decline/go back. Please make changes to this button option,it would be really appreciated.
Really looking forward for this featured update for my Ps4.!!
Will the 2.0 update support the use of external hard drives the way the Xbox one does.
When are we going to in game video chat?? Would really like to use my camera at some point.
Still no DLNA? Come on Sony, you’re making it hard to not jump to Xbox One when the PS4 has been out for a year and can’t do basic things the PS3 can do. We wouldn’t have to worry about wasting a USB port just to play music too if DLNA support was there.
Nice update. Not great though. The fact that i cant play movies from USB is so disappointing :(
Will we be able to make the themes? I know Sony released a tool to do so on PSP.
Hello Love what Sony’s doing. One thing needed a better way to see how much Power is left on the Ds4? I hate having to hold the Home button for 2 Sec just to see what My Charge is at. Well love the Work and BEYOND!!
I really love what sony did with the update. I want to know when it comes out. Also please fix the psn issues. It takes forever to load the friends list most of the time, and sending/receiving messages is extremely slow. I really like the idea of playing music with a USB stick but why can’t we save the music on our hard drive? I also want to be able to import images as well for backrounds, I don’t know if you can already do that or if it’s going to be implemented in this update.
this is a killer update. but when we DLNA feature, the ability to sotre movies to ps4 ( I have a tb hdd I wold love to use) friend sign on notifications, and obviously the stop/resume feature id be all set
Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.
Why ?
Wich is your fear ?
from what you are scared?
What makes you afraid?
we want pause/resume downloads!!!
Is there going to be a way to play movies off of a usb with this update?
Will the usb music support share factory?
