You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.
PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.
- USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
- Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
- Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
- Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
- Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
- Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
- Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.
Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.
PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation
The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.
PlayStation App 2.0 update
The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

Can’t wait for video play though, I used to love using my ps3 as a dvd player.
I have a few questions ! ( if the answer is no, please say if it is even under consideration)
1- Can we copy and save the mp3 files from the usb unto our console so we can access them anytime without the usb ?
2- Will there be a future social feature to provide each one’s psn profile the ability to upload gameplay and clips on ? kinda like a youtube channel but only on our psn profiles, rather than having to upload them on facebook where 80% of our friends there aren’t even gamers ?
3- the magical ability to pause downloads !?
4-Friend sign on notifications !? I understand that there are too many friends now but maybe you can provide an option so we can check list the friends we want to have notified when they come on. when I play solo campaign, I feel so disconnected from my friends’ network, never felt like that on ps3 !
Please Sony, make an official PS app for Windows Phone 8 users!!

Does Sony really care about what we want? This update rather seems pretty small. Coding firmware is obviously not your expertise! Just selling hardware and rely on it completely will hopefully get you a** kicked. Wake up and give us some real functionality!
I know everyone wants something different but II have gone through the comments and it is pretty clear to see you don’t get the most PS users. We want to be better then the competition not be the last when it comes to product support and firmware updates.
Will it also fix the Music Unlimited? It’s slow like a (put your favorite one here).
Also – Lossless compression for Music Unlimited? Not everyone likes the mp3-like crap (even if it’s in 320kbps).
I would also add one more request: BT support for any headphones, not just Sony (why do I have to buy a new ones because of that?)
when will be changing ID´s avaiable?
How about fixing some fundamental issues first:
– PSN uptime – in the last weeks you had multiple unannounced downtimes and server issues hindering online play / services
– friends list – it’s broken, unacceptable!
– resume from standby to game directly, you made this promise like 18 months ago, still no show
We didn’t have these problems with PS3 where we didn’t need to pay for online but now we do while paying hard earned money!
In the meantime M$ is rolling significant FW updates on a monthly basis and improving user experience while on your side it looks like it’s getting worse.
I give Sony another 6 months and if this still wont improve I might just as well switch sides, it looks like the other team is working hard on getting back on track and regaining the trust of players while Sony is resting on it’s laurels and falling behind.
I would love the to be able to control the game audio and party audio individually when I have headphones plugged in. I can’t hear one of my friends if I have all audio out because his mic is too low so I need to have just party chat out, but my mic picks up the game audio from the tv, which forces me to play with no audio! Please separate the sliders
Also since release it yet can we get a snap feature like the xbox one say we get stuck on a game we snap the YouTube app search up the help video and mimic that persons actions to help us get past that part and some others this 1 call live area its bassicaly the capture gallery but completely overhauld to look and feel like its a live area wen u chose to enter you are presented with a live screen area with videos plasterd on it some from your highlights some from best moments and some from helpful walkthroughs and it can be randoms games at and if you dont watch any of them you can allways go in and chose specific recorded gameplay videos to watch some like livetv/theater/on demand another ideal is a information guide something like a live news feed that ownly pops up during whatever game your playing telling you how other people r getting through it or if a livestream has been started for that game wordwide not just restricted to friends orther ideal alow us to also change the color of the wave in the background say i chose a gray background well i made the wave red so now i have gray background with a red wave color options for ui icons orther ideals apps for email facebook and skype
DLNA?
One great question. There is one significant feature that was one of the highlights of the console announcement:
Game suspension. What happened to game suspension?
There are games like Alien Isolation that have certain areas where you can save maually. But you have to reach that area first. Sometimes we need to leave a game session because of something else. Having to reload the game and start from a save point farther back is an inconvenience where game’s suspension is a HIGE convenience.
And video chating for you and your ps4 friends
This is a cool update Sony. It would be nice to also see when friends sign on or offline (The fact that this is completely absent on the PS4 to begin with dumbfounds me to no end) or tell when friends are using the PS3 or PS4, besides just looking at the game they’re playing.
Will we never be able to store music into our HDDs?!! LAME!!!
Just pause the game hit the ps button dont hold it just tap it then wen you go to start a app netflix it will if you want to supend the game your playing then later you go back to the homescreen select the game you were you were playing and the game will resume where u left off remember dont hold the ps button and quit the game just tap the ps button and start up an app like netflix and you’l get asked if you want to supend the game the feature there u just have to acess it a caertain way
This update is good, but were is friend notifications ” see friends coming online”? Is very important for the online community !!

I have more services on PS3 than PS4… PSN Online Offline few times every week now, and DLNA support!!!! On Spain , Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited are bad services, add DLNA please.

Why instead of do update to home screen you not work on your ps network serwera which one let you guys down couse all time problem with it is?? And maybe you will think to add atleast a support for external driver couse i used to think thats allready inn but when i plug my drive via usb is not connecting trough, why?? And on the end maybe you will finally sort full support for headset many of us been using on ps3 couse my px21 for example Doesnt compatibile yetsky, why??

This is a very minor requested when compared to the others but maybe it can be relayed to the team? Is there any way we can get an “output to speakers” option for voice chat? The PlayStation 3 gave us the option and it worked wonders for my friends and I when they were over. Sometimes the people in my living room are curious to know what my friends are saying on the other end.
One thing I really really want is a official PlayStation app on windows phone.
the only thing i want is a way to force people to use there damn mics online is pointless without them. i miss the socom days when you werent allowed in the room unless you had one
This is nice news and all but what is going on? PSN down earlier and tonight while I’m playing Sleeping Dogs it says I’ve been connected through remote play and it exited me out of my game and went to system storage and was about to start deleting files before I shut it down. I’m worried to even turn it back on and it sucks because I just lost a good hour’s worth of game time since my last save.
We need the subject box added back to messages like it was on ps3. You could type in a quick message and a person could read when it flashed across screen without having to pause or go to messages to read it. And interface speed needs to be increased. Takes forever to send a message!

Here is my list that i hope to be found in future updates:
-When in a game and pressing PS button,
the background should be translucent so when
your messaging or something during online game
you can see whats happening and game sound should play through also
-When replying to invites with the PS button,
have a small popup that gives 3 options using the touch-pad:
Swipe Right= Accept
Swipe Left = Reject
Swipe Down = Will Join Soon
(a message will be sent to let them know to wait for you )
There were so many times where i wanted to finish my round and
then join a party but either missed out because my mates
weren’t sure if i was joining or not and other way around.
I’m pretty sure this will useful for most online gamers
-Friend Offline/Online notification
-Have groups in friends list so you can sort out your friends
for example real friends/clan mates/randoms
-Bring back PS2 menu waves background sound
-When connecting dual shock 4 to be charged it should make a notification sound
and also when battery is full it should make a sound to let you know its 100%
-Being able to delete captures in share button menu
I know Rome was not build in one day… and i really love the new features that is coming soon. Actually i cant wait.
but if you guys can look into these, and if you guys do read this and not only the first page of responses, it would be great.
1: Bring back the free online gaming, add the plus feature only if you want free downloadable games per month.
2: A better way add friends. In Destiny.. i seldom just had to pause.. try to remember the name of the guy i just saw and eventually with a bit of struggle managed to add some weird name to my request. i know a lot are asking to change their psn names, if this is a really delicate process or matter of security, maybe add an option to pay a small fee like 5 dollars for it.
3: Online friend notification
4: More interaction and reason why a PlayStation camera can be a great aid to buy, for gaming and for social, but at the moment i really don’t see the necessity to actually to have one. For instance.. if you play a game small video feeds of your party can be seen in game, or even a Skype feature.
5: to be able to suspend a game…switch the console off.. come back and press a button and continue. This was one of the cool features mentioned when the ps4 was marketing itself…and never happened.
6: To be able to choose what games need to be updated and what games can be ignored, esp when you have a lot of games installed and at the very moment only need that specific game to always be updated. Maybe add manually update or automatic update features.
7: Stabilizing the psn online gaming network. So many times i have switched on the ps4 and it just kicks out a code…where the psn is actually down but the “how to fix” guide says something way different and very vague.
8: One big headache i have is the overall amount of error codes the machine picks up. Every error code does not describe what its cause is and usually need to go look on google to find out the info. The how to fix is a general guide the machine generate for all codes. Please add a description what these codes mean, and maybe an option for the machine to try resolve this issue automatically.
9. Backward compatibility. Yes i understand you guys still want to make money of the ps1/2/3 consoles, but they are dying off. People these days is just going to buy a new console. If i did not have a ps3 i would not go out and buy a ps3 just for a game. Ill buy the latest one. I know these games you can download and pay a fee again for this, but its stupid. We bought these games, we have the disc, and a lot of us are not as fortunate to download millions of gigs just to get your game back on the ps4 machine.
Or at least make upcoming ps3 games compatible with ps4.
10: DLNA support
I know this is a long list, most of us are asking these, it will probably not happen now or ever, but would love to hear from sony on these points. Keep up with the awesome work, I am a 100% fan of PlayStation and nothing else.

This is literally one of the most amazing updates for a game console that I have ever seen! The USB music player is an amazing idea! And finally the add to library function! Seriously, good job guys! Can that add to library function be added to the Vita? I’m about to buy another chip considering that all of the amazing PS+ deals took it up!

One thing i REALLY hope is that we can – Use the pictures we take with the PS capture button as a background!! I mean what else will you use those pictures for? If we then additionaly can let it change background automaticly every 15-30 mins etc.. that woud be an easy and awesome feature in extention to the themes and capture features! Please think about it!
you know full d@mn well this was an aweful compromise. people are only requesting the mp3 support to integrate in their games like has been done for nearly 10 years now. Now all we get as an answer is the ability to listen to music while we play which we could already do if we were desperate enough to do something that stupid. Is that all we get? Please tell me the sound will at least be dynamic to fit within certain game modes. No matter, that, this feature makes so many things we have counted on from our games irrelevant. Why are you so scared of mp3 support? Your taking one gigantic leap backwards with this policy bs.
I am super excited about this update. Are we going to get the chance to connect portable HDDs to the PS4 with this update or is that has to be confirmed yet? I really wanna watch movies and series on my PS4.
Two very important psn upgrades for me would be:
The ability to change your psn id.
The ability to change a sub account to a regular one.

Hello me name is lukas from slovakia i love PlayStation since PSone PS4 it’s just amazing gaming console but I want from 2.0update friends notifications to see who is online like on Ps3 and can you fix problem with messaging im waiting ages for then to load up I have 60mbps boardband so Internet connection is good I think. And I like to switch off light bar on controller because of battery life im charging every day im waiting for update like small child for Christmas presnet :) and PLEASE CAN U PUT SLOVAKIA OR CZECH LANGUAGE TO SYSTEM thank you Sony I will stay with you whatever hapends Lukas
Some important ommisions there:
-DLNA support for movies and music
-Background music player
-Messaging system and friend list that sends messages and doesnt involve a spinning bar for 30 seconds
Well it’s way worse than I originally thought. I didn’t just lose an hour of save time on Sleeping Dogs, I lost everything and not just with Sleeping Dogs. Every save file for every game I have is gone. I’m most upset with NBA 2K15 because I just got to the finals in my career and I’ve spent over $35 on virtual currency for the game just to upgrade my player and get the animations I want and now all that is gone because my player was erased and set back to a player rating of 62 with awful animations. Just hundreds of hours wasted. Sony better be able to do something.

Are there steps being taken to improve the messaging system?
I find that when a message pops up, if I then go into the messages screen it can take a while for the message to appear.
Not a major thing but can be annoying.
Great update on the new features.Would just like to suggest some small things that could help enhance the gaming experience.
-Customisation of the light bar in the DS4 and on the PS4
-Ability to be able to eject the disc without switching on the console entirely
-Save the game state and going on standby mode so when you return to your console you can continue where you left off.
-An indicator on the light bar on the PS4 when your game downloads or updates are completed
Sometimes its the little things that count. :D
The USB music player is a nice idea.. but the point has been missed. I don’t want to listen to music while I play, I want to add songs into custom soundtracks like on WWE games.. this is not a new thing.
