You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.
PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.
- USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
- Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
- Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
- Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
- Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
- Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
- Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.
Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.
PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation
The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.
PlayStation App 2.0 update
The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

I’d like the ability to arrange and categorize my friend list. With as many as I have on my list, it’s annoying to have to scroll down all the way toward the end of the alphabet, wait 20 seconds for it to load more names, etc. Let me categorize friends or position them differently in the list to however I see fit.
I hope that you add these features in the next update
1: pause/ stop for the downlading games
2: folders in the home screen
And by the way is the arabic language will be supported by the voice commands?!

Can we get the ability to arrange our trophy lists from A-Z or Z-A like with the PS3 & Vita? Also for colors, why isn’t there any green? That’s like my favorite color but it seems to be the most ignored color in this kind of stuff.

I’m glad this update will be useful. I’m very happy to hear about MP3 Support, but storing music on a thumb drive and consuming a USB port on the PS4 (with what little it has) is just ridiculous. I sincerely hope there are plans to allowing music to be stored on the hard drive regardless if it does take up some space, that’s why we’re given the option to upgrade our hdd beyond 500gb’s.
As for the themes, I personally don’t care for them. However, I hope this isn’t a solution in preventing us from adding our own background wallpaper on the ps4. Other than that, the choice for background color is rather small and I’d like to see more added in future updates.
Would love to see the CinemaNow app come to the PS4. I used it like crazy on the PS3.

Finally! The fact that you guys did not think music was importent from the start disturbs me a lot. When I had my Xbox, music went hand-in-hand when I was playing video games. So when I switched over I was shocked I could not even play my music while gaming. It was a big letdown Calling Captain hindsight.
@ Jsun_Kuma Even more baffling, it took them this long to get half of the experience. However, I can sympathize about the ps3 and it’s technical challenges, I just hope they’re really passed that and not struggling with the ps4 also.
I would like to see an option to play sound through headphones and TV/ surround sound simultaneously. I really hate having to go I to settings to change the audio back to TV after I’m done using my Turtle Beach.

Turn those squares into Interactive Cubes. 6 games within a Cube. Hold R2 + Left Stick to navigate each side, when R2 is released, X to enter. Square can be assigned to arrange what contents are in Cube. Maintain the flat look (think game last played), when hovered over Cube it would be interactively angled. Same Dual Xross Media Bar operation, but with refined Interactive Cubes.

I seriously don’t understand why this feature is taking so long. I understand I’m not the majority here who uses his game consoles as a media player, but man, we can’t be that small a group either. I had all my Anime, workout videos, pictures for decades ago on my PS3 and just expected those things to be in place with the new console. Really, a year out, and we can’t just plug in phones and copy over media files? Ridiculous.
Sony can we please get offline/ online trophy modes like on ps3 and vita. And also allow us to get our themes and backgrounds we bought on ps3. Add folder system and organization options. Add these on top of what’s being promised and it would b da best system ever for sure.
Loving all the new updates and stuff.. but still one thing I think is missing: External storage. Being able to save and install games on an external hard drive or USB would be so perfect and I think a lot of people would think this is a good idea because I mean come on; it’s 2014.
But we still cant play videos from the usb right. You should really add that feature as xbox already has it. All the users have been asking for it so why not add it in this update itseslf. And please improve the psn service. It takes forever to load the friends list and a lifetime to enter the account information. Please improve on these thins otherwise the ps4 has been gr8.

Please we need CD, photo, video and DNLA support. Right now the system is really lacking multimedia features and I miss them.

Please add an option to use PS Camera Microfone only for games and voice command and not for Voice Chat.
Still missing my top requests!! DNLA support, and bluetooth media remote support so that I can use my Harmony Ultimate all in one remote. This is the main reason my PS3 is still getting more use than my PS4. Play games on my PS4, but watch TV/Movies more than gaming. Don’t like all the switching back and forth, not to mention my PS4 is much quicker than PS3. Seems like an easy fix, especially the latter. Harmony has already stated they want to add support but that PS is the one not supporting it.
wow does that mean we will finally have a you tube app??? I am looking forward to this update and hopefully we will get hbo go soon too.
Also we should be able to record our game footage if you have the camera just by saying playstation record that.

with 2.0 will we be able to watch other twitch channel other then only ones that are being streamed by the ps4. i cant watch any of my favoritechannel on the ps4

This is ok Sony, I still know everyone wants usb video playback for a number of video format. I think this should really be in this update.

I hope that sony can sell themes that were exclusively for preorders on day one digital download games that can be sold as standalone purchases. Will that be considered in the near future?

Tease with a crappy backup to USB option then take it away? I’m not wasting any more money upgrading the internal drive again after already doing it twice and having to redownload EVERYTHING all over again.
The Xbone gets my games money from now on, can just plug in a USB drive and use it for storage or backup, even take it to a friends and play my digital games on his console! As well as media streaming and MKV support, and all the other USEFUL monthly updates they get.
Sorry Sony, but unlike you MS seems to listen to its customers, and any game I buy from now on will be for the Xbone (excluding any GOOD exclusives you get) until you get your act together and offer these features that should have been there ages ago.
