PS4 System Software 2.00 Preview: USB Music, Home Screen Colors

You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.

PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.

  • USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
  • Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
  • Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
  • Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
  • Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
  • Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
  • Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.

Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.

PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation

The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.

PlayStation App 2.0 update

The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

Stay tuned for more information on Masamune. We can’t wait for everyone to try it!

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.

  • andddd we still can’t sort trophies by date…..(something the PS3 had)

  • I love everything here! Well done once again, but um, ability to change PSN ID? Please?

  • OK star in but the ps4 BADLY NEEDS the ability to:

    pause downloads

Play videos so we don’t have to plug in another system and remove our ps4….

    See when friends come online!!!!!
Sorting of friends list into multiple and even overlapping groups…

Please make this VERY useful stuff happen ASAP….

  • This update reminds me of a really bad Christmas where I wanted transformers but got the gobots instead. I remember thinking how I couldn’t wait to open all those transformers only to find out the wait was for nothing but disappointment. Update 2.0 is like getting gobots, thanks for the reminder of what anticipation does, it brings disappointment.

  • There should be support for multiple accounts on the PSTV. It’s kind of odd to have a device connected to a TV that can only be used by one person. Also means others can’t use Remote Play which is lame.

  • THANKS, mp3 its a great addition, and all other stuff too. Really i´ll wait to the update.
    NEXT THING: VIDEO PLAYER PLEASE.
    GOOD WORK!!

  • Saludos Sony, en algún futuro la ps4 podr tener y hacer toda las funciones que actualmente tiene la ps3? Me refiero a guardar músicas, fotos y video en el almacenamiento de la consola ps4.

  • When are you going to add a video chat feature? Right now my ps4 cam is a paperweight

  • Can you please make it so we can hide the video apps we don’t have installed. I liked that on the PS3. And I only use Netflix, hulu plus, ign, and crunchy roll but I’m stuck looking at EVERYTHING. Also since we can backup our PS4 does that mean when I upgrade my PS4 hard drive this holiday I’ll be able to just preload my old data back on without having to redownload all of my installs, updates, and digital games?

  • Live from Playstation on PS Vita…….Finally

  • How about a fix to the no audio sometimes on start-up carrying over to the actual games.

  • So when can we expect external hard drive support like what the Xbox One?

  • Thanks Sony! If you throw in the ability to change your PSN ID, this would be the best update in a long time. It has been talked about being implemented since the release of the PS4, so is this something we can expect by next year?

  • We’re moving in the right direction with this update, but if Sony is really serious about listening to what it’s customers are asking for, there are a couple of things missing:

    1. DLNA support. We’ve been asking for this since the start, and this is really a must-have. Please, please, please add this. It should be a priority.

    2. Spotify. It’s cool that we can listen to music on a thumb drive, but more and more people are using Spotify, and it’s the best interface for listening to music. I know it competes with “music unlimited”, but it’s still taking away from the experience of the PS4 to not have Spotify integrated.

That’s all I can think of for the ps4 actually. So not too bad Sony!

Another thing – for PS TV, we need Netflix! I’ve heard they’re working to make it available, but that’s one of the main reasons I’d want the PS TV (to replace our chromecast). Please add that, and many many many more units will get sold!

  • @146 Sony has made it loud and clear and there will be no physical disc backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 4. The only way to do that is streaming through PlayStation Now on PlayStation 4. PlayStation Now is not free, you’ll have to maintain your PlayStation Now streaming by paying every 4 hours or every 30 days or every 90 days.

In order to play both PlayStation 3 discs and PlayStation 4 discs, you’ll need to keep both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 because I don’t see Sony releasing a firmware update to make PlayStation 3 discs compatible with PlayStation 4. One of the biggest reasons for this is because of what happened when Sony released the backwards compatible PlayStation 3 which cost $100 more (I believe) than the restrictive PlayStation 3 consoles that every store has today. This cost Sony a lot of money because a lot of people bought the restrictive PlayStation 3 consoles because they were $100 less.

When I say restrictive PlayStation 3’s, I mean the ones that do not read the PlayStation 2 discs.

This is why I very much doubt Sony will ever let the PlayStation 4 be backwards compatible like that. It’s going to lose too much money.

And I’m for having it backwards compatible.

  • Any fixes coming for PSN messaging on the PS4? It takes several minutes to load messages and multiple attempts to send messages. Also happens on the iPhone PS App.

  • Wtf thats the worst Green color ive seen lookws teel or aqua! Why cant you add all the colors from ps3 and Psp like seriously last gen has more options???

  • Honestly, I dont think that this update is so bad. I mean, themes and background music are cool! I want both!

But… I really feel that Sony doesnt give a **** for the feedback of their millions consumers! One year after the release of the console thats their update? What about the bugs that is on the system, like the share button that doesnt record everything as it should. Or even worse, where the hell is the option to PAUSE a damn download! Why something THAT basic is still not even on their plans?? They think that the entire world have that alien internet connection that the japanese people have? (not mentioning region changing option, PSN ID changing option, DLNA, and so on)

I like themes and I like background music. But that was not the kind of priorities that I was expecting! Give me a functional system Sony! I’m tired of your BS!

  • I’m loving the new update add-on/features! Now I’ll buy a PS4! Thank you Sony! Listening to your own music is a feature the PS4 sorely lacked. The thing I love about the PS3 is the media sharing feature and that’s part of the reason why I’ve been hesitant to buy the PS4 because it lacked some of the features that made the PS3 a fun console to own.

  • Its PS4 youtube app gonna be 1080p or 720p like the PS3?

  • So I can stream live, and my own music will play in the background? Sweeet…

  • This update sounds and from the images also seems to look great, I’m also glad you took the time to respond to a few comments. hope that at some point in time we will be able to change our PSN™ names. Keep up the good work and thank you.

  • All sounds great, thx team. Big one for me would be having folders to tidy up my ever growing games collection, so I don’t have to scroll forever trying to find the game I wanna play. Also .mp4 video playback from usb would be mint. Thx
    again

  • Oh yeah and the biggy…… PLEASE LET US CHANGE OUR PSN NAMES. :)

  • When are we going to get friend notifications for when people sign in and out?

  • Looking forward to 2.0! Glad your making the whole numbered updates big updates. My most wanted feature is for the vita and it’s native ds4 support on remote play like the new experience z phones

  • What about the ability to move the “Broadcast” camera location during live streaming. It gets in the way of some games.

  • always the top thanks for update guys if u like to updated for upcoming games and gameplay visit my channel .www.youtube.com/channel/UCezMOboVPQgsbTxMcKqIgUw

  • Also SONY, you can up the amount time of video recording. 15 minutes it’s not enough.

  • Can you guys patch remote play via internet? The vita cannot turn the Ps4 on because it requests you to push the PS Button…..

  • I can’t waite to try out the new 2.0 update I think it is gonna be cool.

  • when is the new update gonna come for the ps4?

  • Thanks for the update Scott, Just also wanted to ask a question in relation to the trophy tracking system that’s currently in place on the PS4.

It would be really great if it was possible to view all our trophies and other game related stats “offline”. Hate having a trophy pop up while playing a game only to find that i have to connect online just so i can sync and view my current trophy stats.

Are offline trophies something that will be incorporated into the 2.0 update?

Also, with the themes… i’m guessing we can use our own photos or graphics from a USB drive and apply them to our PS4 backgrounds?

    Cheers,

  • Will we be able to change our names in the future?

  • Will there be an update for the Playstion TV that makes remote play run better, I am connected via highspeed cat 6 and it still lags with fiber optic.

  • So far using the Music Unlimited app I am unable to stream music with my games. So if I’m streaming Destiny while listening to music, my viewers only here Destiny with me singing over it. It sounds kinda…strange.

Will I be able to stream my USB music along with the game?

  • Right… and… where… exactly… is the non-butchered DLNA support?

  • Man … don’t post again until you have a DATE to report, please!

  • I love new features as much as the next, but god damn guys. Its been almost a year already. Can we please have the PS4 be capable if doing everything the PS3 can? Where is folders for games? (Your Library sort option us a joke, I never use that tile). People still want DLNA support (I don’t have a PC, but I can see the need for it). Why can’t we put music and video on the HDD?? You do realize there are only two USB ports right? Nobody wants to fuss with USB HUBs. Where us AAC support for music??? PS3 has this, and thus ALL my music is AAC…seriously people, its 7 YEARS NEWER hardware than PS3 and is still inferior in so many ways. Its like you DONT want people using PS4 after they play some games….now excuse me while I go burn Exodus – Blood In Blood Out to my PS3 HDD in AAC format. Then copy it over to my Vita to take to work.

  • While I’m happy this update is finally coming it is a major annoyance to not be able to save my own music on my own ps4’s hard drive. I can do it on my ps3 so what exactly is the problem Sony?
How are we supposed to make playlists if we can’t save to the drive? It seems like we’re forced to constantly use one of the 2 usb ports, not mention the annoyance of keeping my flash drive constantly full and unavailable for other tasks.
I’m okay with added functionality coming later on, but I’m not okay with a gimped feature, should it stay that way indefinitely.
Can we use USB external hard drives, and is there any hope for FLAC support to come later?

  • I kinda have a suggestion here. As a Bluetooth device I wanted to connects Sony 420 watts dj stereo system but it said something about file not supported. Could it be added into the PS4 so i can connect the speakers to it?

  • Seriously the big thing i would love is the ability to watch any twitch tv stream like the channels i follow and suscribe to.

  • Sweet, cant wait for it to arrive, and I’m glad you all seem to be listening! Just waiting to have the ability to change our PSN names, and we’ll all be golden!

  • See, my question would be, could I use the USB port to plug my phone into the PS4 so I can listen to music? If not is that something you’d consider adding?
By the way the update does sound really cool, can’t wait to try it out :)

  • Great update but now here’s a list of features I want:

Upload MP3 to PS4 HDD rather than play from USB
    Friend notifications
    DLNA support
    Delete trophies NOT hide trophies
Change username (even with a fee is fine)
    Folders
    Organize download lists
Delete anything from our download lists
    Backup data to HDD

ANY of these will do! Please include these in the next update after 2.00.

  • Notifications about friends logging in in PSN?

PS4 definitely needs this. I don’t want to forget about my friends timely arrival on the network.

  • Never mind I see that was already answered haha

  • This is awesome I can’t wait :)

  • Thank you guys and gals at PlayStation hearing our voices and concerns, keep up the great work. Much appreciated.

  • One option I’d like to the Home Theme is changing the music as well, I’d love to have the Uncharted Theme song on a loop in the background which would just sound badass. Other Sony exclusive games could have their themes too like God of War, Ratchet and Clank and so on
