You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.
PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.
- USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
- Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
- Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
- Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
- Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
- Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
- Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.
Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.
PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation
The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.
PlayStation App 2.0 update
The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.
Will we be able to use the music on the USB to use as theme/entrance music on WWE 2K15??? If not this is still somewhat pointless to me and a lot of other people.

FINALLY, I can play my own music in the background! I’ve been waiting to do that for 8 years :) Keep up the great work guys. Looking forward to a future update that let’s me download videos from PSN and watch them without having to stream them over my crappy internet connection as well.
I hope the backup feature is still coming at some point. I plan to upgrade to a 2TB drive eventually and really don’t want to manually download/install/update everything again one by one.
I can’t understand why the PS4 OS is backward in so many ways compared to the PS3. I hope you add USB video playback and DLNA streaming eventually.

I want the ability to turn off the light on the controllers. All it does is waste battery life. HBO Go, playback of USB movie files, CD playback. All the stuff my “last gen” system already had. That’d be great.
We need an update where those on the PS3 can see their friends who are on the PS4. Time is money :-)

Thanks so much! I use a 32gb USB drive in my car and have over 800 songs of EDM on it! Is there a limit on your USB storage device size because I also have a 2tb external? Fat32 format of course.
How about a Twitch app. So I can watch Dota tournaments on my TV like every other console owner on the planet.
And when can we finally be able to change our PSN name? If you’d be trully listening we’d have had that a long time ago.
Please, have External Hard Drive support. I know we can change the Internal Hard Drives but there’s only 2TB in the market. Larger sizes are available for External Hard Drives only.
Sony it is OK to release an update and then release another, and then another and guess what and then another after that.
No need to squeeze every possible feature into one update.
i was wondering if we were ever gonna be able to change our usernames like for real i will pay ANY REASONABLE AMOUNT OF MONEY TO CHANGE MY USERNAME i was a dumb kid when i got my first ps3 i really want to change it please…. after that well I look forward to when this update drops it is really a necessary kind of tired of looking at the same blue background lol. Also on the background talk is their a possibility of being able to use any of my old ps3 backgrounds on my ps4 that would be cool
Sounds great! I know more info is coming, but I’m a bit disappointed in the colour lineup for the background colour. I was hoping we’d have a wider wheel to pick from, so to speak. Deeper, more saturated colours I feel are the best, so I’m sad to see that there’s no dark purple/green or saturated orange to pick from. And, while it is great to have MP3 support, I feel like the PS4 could really do with a dedicated Music app to play music that’s stored on the HDD, which has the ability to create Playlists and transfer them to PSVita.
*Checks the date* Nope, not April 1st. If this is Sony’s idea of a *major* revision update (which going from 1.xx to 2.xx is classed as), then they are in real trouble. Had I gone to my boss with this list, I would have been sacked on the spot, or demoted to kettle handler. Talk about laughing in the face of your gaming customers.

From the cheap Chinese controllers, to the hack software team, this generation is a sham up to now from Sony. What we need is DS4 2.00 and System Software 3.00, not this mockery of an update.

Sony!!! this is a good step in the right direction BUT!!! you you could do better just make a stand alone app that lets us listen to are music since your blocking us from using Music Unlimited to it which makes no sense at all.. even google lets you put your music in the cloud i think the usb is just a lazy cop-out
were is the option for external storage and DLNA these features need to be added ASAP!!!!
ill always be team Sony but one thing i respect about microsoft is for the updates and the features that they offer i’m not saying do it every two weeks but the the features that were on the PS3 should of been done and over with by the end of the year
you may have the lead in console sales but the basic features may cost you in long run so dont be so slow to add them
I am glad to see the mp3 player being added. Would it be possible to someday be able to watch video while playing a game as well? I use surround sound headphones so I would only be able to hear my PC or my PS4 so it would be nice to have both features on the PS4.

I like the idea of being able to use voice commands to find your face while streaming, but it would also be great to have the option to zoom out for a wider angle view of your room. I know the camera is capable of it!
You say you listen to fans but one of the most requested features that users want is the ability to change PSN ids and you won’t allow it I’ve been a sony guy all my life and I hate that in stuck with a user name I quickly picked in high school add the ability to change user names.
Why has the usb hard drive backup and restore feature been removed from the post!? It is the moans rapture I need! Not all of us have super fast internet so redownloading 100s of GB of data to upgrade the HDD is not really an option. You guys have a history of announcing things that aren’t true and then removing them without comment! FF Type O for Vita anyone!?

Is it possible to have Google Play All Access on PS4? I’m already subscribed to them and would prefer to use it to listen to my music. I wasn’t a big fan of the selection on Music Unlimited. I understand that Sony wouldn’t want competition but keeping in mind they have Amazon, Netflix and other services accessible that compete with PSN’s movies and shows that are available. Please consider this! D:

I feel that PSstore runs REALLY BADLY, like bit of a slideshow at times. I am not sure if all content is loaded live when browsing the store, which may attribute to the experience, but a simple store cache would probably help 8)

I Still Want To Know Why They Canceled The Driveclub PS Plus Edition that was told to PS Plus Users That Would Be Free And Change there Minds and Try To Charge 49.99 for the damn game that was supposed to be free why is it when other game companys say we will do this and then back out of it on the last day before release because they change there minds that the games bury them in bad press but when sony does it it is seen as ok
Getting better, but please add pause or queuing downloads as when 5 or more things are downloading its like a snail on my broadband speed.

So I don’t need my PS+ account to have the said “free games”, sorry, but they are not “FREE” we pay for them as I don’t play online I pay for a year membership to have the IGC as I have been doing since it arrived on the PS3.

This update is well worth the wait, also those who are wanting to change thier id’s there are a couple of ways to do it via sen account management or desktop version of psn :)
why not give us ps plus free access to the music or ask Pandora to team up. because i dont have any music i use youtube or Pandora. oh and add auto turn on if the system is off to update

What about friend remote playing your game and folders for games?
I hit enter too soon also would it be possible to put Library on the top row next to Settings or something, scrolling all the way to the right to access library can be awhile when one has a lot of apps.
When we do have DLNA and USB Video playback it would be awesome if you could make .MKV video format playable :)
