You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.
PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.
- USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
- Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
- Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
- Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
- Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
- Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
- Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.
Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.
PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation
The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.
PlayStation App 2.0 update
The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.

Wow, mostly cosmetic updates with little real value. This is underwhelming to say the least. Only use my PS4 for Netflix. Spending no money at all on the platform I’m so disappointed with it. Let’s compare competitive updates:

To call this a 2.0 update is a total sham and you should be embarrassed. The UI Top 15 is not good enough. The UI is a complete mess. It’s too much effort, clicking and navigating to find anything. It’s just an awful design. Sony you just don’t get software.

This is GREAT news. I am excited for the update and can’t wait for more to come in the future.
One suggestion though. PLEASE consider using the Demo interface for the consumer PS4, not just retail. That interface is absolutely WONDERFUL. It’s immersive, unique, clean, pretty, and easy to use. Of course there will be a need for minor tweaking for user account, friends, messaging, etc.
I know a lot of gamers that would love that as well.
When I record a video I want my voice and my friends voice in the video not just game sound fix that. That’s what people want why would you even add a Recording capability and take game chat out that’s dumb. I hope that is something that gets added in

How would you feel if you bought a new phone or computer and had to rebuy all your apps because they didn’t work on the new hardware? That’s why backwards compatibility is important.

Its really more for tv than gaming, and lets not talk bout the kinect. $100 camera really…dont even be working right. O ya sony be on soe B.S. Sometimes but in the long run is all for the best.

Yeah come on Sony DLNA and also Support more aftermarket headsets (Turtle Beach) to get rid of that damn cable I have to plug into the controller. Once DLNA comes I can get rid of my PS3.

Great update Sony! I can’t wait! The only thing I would really like is the ability to change your PSN name. Xbox lets you change it for $10 I think. It seems like it should be simple. Please see about that.

This is awesome!! Yet another example of why this is the best system for gaming. Looking forward to slaying Orcs and saving the galaxy to my favorite tunes. This is only the beginning. It only gets better from here.
I think we asked to put our music on our PS4 hard drives, not a USB. Its a nice work around though. Hopefully this will be taken care of one day. Everything else seems amazing :)

I myself would like all the ps3 has now on PS4 I feel like I’ve downgraded when I bought this thing…no ps home no music or video no online stability and nothing really good for ps plus either I feel very ripped off when it comes to the content the PS4 plus gets compared to ps3
You guys are heading in the wrong direction with “Live From Playstation”.
On Xbox One you get a proper Twitch App on PS4 you can only view streams from PS4 consoles. Its very limited and stupid. The worst was when the Last of Us live event was being streamed and you couldn’t even view it through a PS4. I mainly use twitch to view Fighting game streams and can not view any of them on my PS4.

i hate that Destiny uses my Playstation 4 as its own private friends / mail system , I did not Buy a Destiny Gaming system, i bought a PS4 system to play Games on ,,
Destiny like all other games should have an INGAME friends list and Clan list ,, i now constantly receive messages from Random people in Destiny , i See i got a message , i leave the game thinking its from one of my Friends or Family i Added to my PS friends list and NO its the 500th random player inviting me to his Fireteam .
PS4 friends list and mail is for people i have played with for a Long time, i have gotten to know and i Feel comfortable adding them as a friend on my ps4 ,,,, but destiny i am forced to add people i dont know just so i have people to party with in the game.
do not allow any future games to use the PS4 as their games friends and mail system , it could be an “Option” for the people who want it .
I paid nearly $500 for my ps4 , I Did not buy it for Destiny to take over my mail box and friends list

Man, I’m so happy for MP3 support. FINALLY!!!! Can’t even tell you guys how happy I am. It would have been nicer if I could copy my songs to the PS4 so I don’t have to use a USB all the time but this is good enough.
Now all I would like to see is video file support and friends notifications (singing on or off).

Absolutely garbage. While I’m sure a lot of you tiny minded, social media idiots feel this is a good update you couldn’t be more wrong.
This was simply a “hot air” patch to keep people from jumping ship as other counsels have fixed all major issues and will soon start to put a lot of stress on Sony.
There is nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING useful about this patch.
Sony gave you peons fluff to protect their own worth. No video, no server streaming and still no flash. Why? Because it keeps their own multimedia interests in check.
What about external storage system back up? Some people have bandwidth caps.
This is a fools update and ONLY A FOOL WOULD CONSIDER THIS WORTHY of anything more than GARBAGE!

You people need to increase the quality of the videos recorded using the share button too. The quality is horrible. We have a 500gb HDD let us record at 1080p if we want to…
What about the FIX for the HDMI handshake with the receivers like Bose V series. Still have my PS4 on 1080i. Haven’t used it to it’s full potential. Waiting still for the update. Everything else is nice but need my resolution top notch with surround sound.
Love the update news on 2.00 code name: masamune so far Sony. Some things I’d like to see still on PS4.
1. Twitch App: I love watching some of my favorite bloggers on twitch. Unfortunately I have to use my Ipad a lot when I want to watch them when they’re not on PS4. Was curious if you guys are looking into that for a app? Or is their copyright issues involved?
2. Pause/Resume Downloads: Please add this support soon. We start downloading something and then if we get invited into a game via clan or something its very draining on the bandwidth for some users.
3. PSN IDS: This has been asked time and time again for 8 years. For the ability to change our PSN IDS. I’m still not sure why you haven’t given this some thought or feature already. I know if you added this feature and charged $10-15 people would pay it. There is steps you could take to make it so it wouldn’t get out of hand. Like restricting changing the ID to once a year or something.
4. Trophy Sorting Support: Probably nitpicking a bit but I like having the ability to see my trophies in a-z format. Strange that PS3 and Vita have it but PS4 doesn’t. Also maybe the possibility of removing 0% games from our trophy list?
Xbox one updates are much better than this. You guys say your system is so powerful but the software is 70% worse than the competition.
I seriously have no faith in Sony’s software development team. This console sucks so far. The specs is the only thing that keeps this junk on my entertainment center.
Okay, so are we ever going to get a real music player? Like why don’t you make a PS4 compatible form of Spotify? Or even make it capable of playing music cds, or data discs, I’m just saying I’m very disappointed that I had so music burnt onto my PS3 and there was no way for me to transfer it and I just want to be able to have more music based options on my PS4. I honestly haven’t had any issues with the network really, which is impressive, but using Youtube through the Playstation browser seriously sucks on all levels. Please make a stable Youtube app and PLEASE give us more options for watching or listening to media, this is THE most common complaint I hear from my circle of friends and throughout the web. Also, give us more artsy/weird exclusives, I loved rubbing in how awesome Journey and Black Swan were to people that were loyal to certain other boxes hehehe.
