You may already know that PS4’s upcoming system software 2.00, codenamed Masamune, adds some big features including Share Play, YouTube support, and Themes – but the updates don’t end there. I have personally stated in past blog posts that we listen to our fans. PlayStation has heard gamers when they say they want more ways to find friends to play with, and more ways to personalize their PS4. With this update, we’ve added a Players You May Know tile, the ability to listen to your music while gaming, the option to change the look of your PS4 experience, and easier ways to sort and filter your library of content on PS4.
PS4 has been on sale for almost a year and we’re committed to improving the player experience in entirely new ways. As always, we welcome feedback as part of our ongoing effort to make PS4 the best place to play.
- USB Music Player: PS4 owners can play their own music in the background while playing a game using USB Music Player*. After inserting a USB stick loaded with music into the PS4, a new option for USB Music Player will appear. Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.
- Change colors: In addition to the ability to add a theme, PS4 owners can also change the background of the home screen from light blue to one of seven new colors: gold, blue, red, green, purple, pink, and gray.
- Players You May Know: PS4 will now suggest players you may know as potential friends in the ‘What’s New’ section.
- Enhancements to Live Broadcasting: Masamune brings a variety of improvements to live broadcasting on PS4. In the Live From PlayStation app, PS4 owners can now select a Featured channel, which includes official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that the player has followed. Additionally, Live From PlayStation now has filters for searching broadcasts on a specific game, as well as support for archived broadcasts.
- Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.
- Enhanced Voice Commands: The ability to control PS4 using voice has been improved. Players can now say ‘PlayStation’ to begin commands, and ‘All Commands,’ to see a list of all voice command options available. New voice commands were added for live broadcasting, including “Start broadcast,” “End broadcast,” and “Find face.”
- Add To Library: The monthly free PlayStation Plus games will have an ‘Add to Library’ button in the PlayStation Store. This button will add a game to a PS4 owner’s library without downloading it – saving space on their hard drive.
Correction: Back Up Data, a feature listed in an earlier version of this post, is not part of PS4 system software 2.00.
PS Vita and PS TV – 3.35 update, Live From PlayStation
The PS Vita and PS TV systems will also receive a system software update to version 3.35 with the same timing as Masamune, adding four-player Remote Play support to PS TV. In addition, the Live from PlayStation app, which allows users to watch live gameplay streams from PS4 systems, will be available on both PS Vita and PS TV alongside this update.
PlayStation App 2.0 update
The PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets, available free on the App Store and Google Play, is also set to receive an update to version 2.0 within the same launch window as both the PS4 and PS Vita system software updates. This update provides a new layout for tablets, and the app’s home screen has been redesigned.
Stay tuned for more information on Masamune. We can’t wait for everyone to try it!
* User can play music files stored inside USB storage but cannot copy music files to PS4 HDD. This application cannot be used at the same time with Music Unlimited. USB Music Player will appear once USB storage is inserted, and will disappear once USB storage is removed.
I wanna know… The usb music feature, Surely to God we can copy the music from the usb to our system, right??? If you have to keep your usb inserted into the ps4 to play music then it is still majorly screwed up! Please make it like ps3 where we can just copy our music and videos straight to the system.
Thank you Sony! I’ve been waiting for this update! 2 birds, one stone– YouTube and MP3!!!! Very nice!
Any chance we could get the ability to use a DualShock 3 or 4 with the Vita like we can with the PS TV? Sometimes when i use the remote play i am really used to using the DS4, and it would be nice to have the option to use one if its not something hardware specific in the PS TV. Or even just stream the video to the Vita from the PS4 and let me use the DS4 without it logging me out of remote play.
You say you’ve listened to your customers’ feedback, yet everyone has been clear since day one that DNLA and video playback is the top missing feature, and it’s not even mentioned here. You could at least comment on it, seeing how we all gave you our money and Sony made this huge florid promise to add it after they saw the backlash. How do you say that you listen to feedback and care about your customers, then completely ignore the #1 thing brought up in feedback with a straight face? This is so disappointing on so many levels.
OK can you save music onto your ps4 hdd? or u can only play from the usb
Too bad there is no camera support for video chat. Sony released a camera which is pretty much useless. Video conference would be a great thing to add. Overall I cant wait for this update!! Sony thank you for listening!
I hope there will be an Destiny theme
Ok. How about the YouTube app we were promised would come out in the Fall?!
Great feature set. Keep em coming!
Awesome update! Especially the Back Up feature. Now, it’ll make it easier to swap internal HDD just like the PS3. The only thing I’m surprised about though is the Suspend Mode that was announced since before launch is still not added yet. It’s almost a whole year now. What’s going on with that feature?
Themes look cool, the colors are nice, the music thing isn’t exactly what people were asking for, but is a good start. It all seems like a step in the right direction. Two things though, first does the music have to come off a usb stick or could we say use an ipod or mp3 player instead? Secondly, can we get an option for folders? From what I’ve seen organizing things on PS4 still isn’t as easy as PS3. Maybe if we had the option for folders it might become easier. Also when can we expect this update? End of the year perhaps?
Firstly, fix your PSN SERVERS , messaging and party system !
By the way, where is instant resume and external usb functionality, download queue ?
Colors ? Wow !
For those wondering why PS4 takes so long to upload your Friends List. Here is the reason: Ps3 can only see 100 of your friends, meanwhile PS4 can have 2000. So anything over a 100 your PS4 will fight to load it. Drop some of those friends you hardly see online. Then your PS4 will load it with no problem. And since Ps3 can’t see past 100, it is now pointless to have to many friends on your PS4. So Ps3 needs an update so PS4 can see everyone. I have having this trouble too. So I am getting rid of anyone on my PS4 I never see online. Yes it sucks but if you want your PS4 to act right get rid of those you never see or game with often.
This makes me want to buy a PS4
oh nvm please make it to where you can save on hdd next
Thank you guys @ Sony for the upcoming update. It looks very nice and very useful for us gamers and people that like to use their console for more than gaming. Although i am completely content with my purchase of a PS4 console and woud go back and change that given the opportunity, the one thing that i wish we had more of was system updates. The XBOX One community receives monthly updates to their system software, with very relevant very useful features added. As a PS4 gamer this is my one wish.
Again thank you everyone @ Sony for your hard work!
WHat about Bluetooth Support? I have 3 Bluetooth headsets and none of them work on my ps4
WHEN IS THIS RELEASING?
“Playing music in the background” is not really the reason everybody was outraged over the lack of MP3 support. We wanted MP3 support to import our music into games that offered in-game custom soundtracks. There’s a huge difference. There were plenty of games on PS3 that used custom soundtrack features like MLB The Show, Gran Turismo 5, FIFA, WWE, etc. You could do things like custom menu music, player intro music, stadium sounds and custom radio stations in cars, to name a few. That is why we wanted to use our own music. Background music is sort’ve pointless, I can just play music from my Ipod speakers in my room while I’m playing if I wanted that.
Perhaps I’m mistaken and we will still be able to utilize those features with this update, but it doesn’t appear likely considering you can’t store the music files on the hard drive and the media player disappears if you don’t have a USB stick on the console. I would love to be wrong though.
I laughed when i read ” we dont want you playing some of the biggest games of the year without the biggest update lol…….” ummmm the only games ON the console are just now being released……………………. >_> 1 year after the console is out it FINALLY has games…..
Woo hoo, finally added some basic things we expected to be able to do from day one! All though in all seriousness I am happy about these ‘additions’. Though, with only 2 USB ports, having a headset plugged in means I have only one, so if I need to charge the pad (and it needs it frequently) then no more music.
Couple things still missing – Cant sort trophies, no friend online notifications, no indication of what system online friends are actually on and no ability to record/broadcast party chat other than your own. And again, these feel like things that should have been their from the get go and aren’t here almost a year post release.
I sound like I’m complaining, but I do appreciate the things Sony are doing. It’s just a ‘next gen’ console should not really be playing catch up for some basic things that were present last gen.
Cool, now all you need to add is Blue-Tooth Headset support and I think we’re all set.
Also add the ability to add screenshots to our Share Factory videos.
Others also demand DNLA, I don’t give a damn about that personally, if I want it, I’ll use my PS3.
I would like to be able to add Images and Gifs to my videos in Share Factory.
Not sure how you guys would do that, maybe take a screenshot from an image either USB or Online and auto crop it to the HDD. Still wouldn’t work for Gifs unless internet shortcuts are used in the final video.
I’m just giving you alternatives to direct image download, I know some can contain viruses, but at least with screenshots and cropping you know what is on the system.
Soo we still can’t put MUSIC ON THE PS4? We have to use the lame app music unlimited which sucks why can’t yall just let us put music an videos on here like the ps3????????
We should be able to change the ds4 lightbar color to whichever we want
When will this update be done?
Life’s gonna be good again!
Any news on adding PS1 classics to the store? I’ve been waiting to play some oldies for way too long. It’d help with how barren the store is now.
How much longer for server to come back up trying to play destiny but i can’t
Where is our 16 players party chat?
plz plz add DLNA support and dynamic themes
Yea Themes..
Wish list:
Pause/Resume Downloads
The friends list tries too hard to load the player’s profile as well.
Don’t let it load the profile to make the friends list appear faster.
Friends should have:
-List of friends. You can cut the ammount of friends loading by just loading a portion of them. And it helps keep track of who’s playing what.
-A small icon to appear. Kinda like how you go to ranking systems and leaderboards, they load pretty fast. That’s what you need to do with friends list. Just a name and an image that is a shortcut to his profile, but doesn’t pre-load his profile .
-Games Played By: Rather than seeing the friends list, you get to see your games list and the full list of people that played this game, in your friends section. You can see a portion of them when you go to the game itself, but it’d be better if the friend had it’s own section for that.
What about the free codecs such as .flac and .ogg/.oga?
All things I had expected to find when I first turned on my PS4 last December. Now that PS4 that was less than a year old died, and I just got it back from being repaired… and what do I find now? PSN is down. Thanks for screwing me Sony- I won’t be back.
Wow! Been looking forward to this update for a while now, thanks Sony! and is sony undergoing maintenance right now? for how long?
I think that all these updates are going to be a great addition, but I do have a question. Is it at all possible that in a future update for me to be be able to talk to all my friends regardless the nat type restrictions?
What about being able to download movies you buy off the PSN and being able to download them to the system and not just stream?
I can’t wait for the update!! Oh, and notice how I’m not a ps plus member anymore. PS Plus games have sucked the past couple months.
Everyone complaining about how all of this should have been in the launch, I guarantee that waiting this long will be worth. I mean they do need to test them out.
Awesome update preview. As much as I’m anticipating this firmware update to release, I’m still disappointed. I’ve been waiting for an RMA box from Sony Techinical Support and I still haven’t received it. This is actually a replacement ps4 that was sent to me and it didn’t even last a week. I’ve already followed up a week before and was told it hasn’t been sent yet. After waiting for another week, I still haven’t received my box.
I know this isn’t the place I should be posting my customer complaint but I’m starting to feel restless with all this waiting. Please, is there any Sony rep out there willing to help me out?
@IssaKazuma,
He means, the games that are being released this holidays season are going to be some of the biggest games released during 2014. So they want you to have firmware 2.00 installed prior to the biggest games of 2014 being released. I didn’t look at calendar, but typically the biggest games come before Black Friday. So we hopefully have about 30 days until release.
Will there be an app for hbo as well? Would love to watch Game of Thrones on my ps4.
You guys rock! Thanks! Here’s a suggestion, if it’s not already a thing, hows about the PS App being able to control the USB music playback on the PS4?
Seriously, it’s hard to continue with sony, when tge xbox one rears us answer us and make the REAL improvements to the system, everyone asking about external storage for games cause its a real issue for us going full digital. And still none answer was given about that, seriously sony team, learn with Microsoft, you are far behind on that. I have both consoles and while you are just bothered about the sales sucess, Microsoft is here real #4thegamers. And you are just #4themoney
What about being able to connect Bluetooth headsets again?? It’s still a slim list of compatible serial numbers. Also is video chat ever gonna be brought back? I kno me and my friends miss that feature….seeing as most of us have the ps4 camera.
I would like to delete some trophies or games off my trophy list.
No video files support …. When Sony when????
Why dont you add Youtube Channel ,Music and Pictures Storage in the Hard Drive as the PS3 ?? Please Sony
1) Folders
2) Pause/Resume Downloads
3) Organize Friends
4) Record ALL Party Chat When Streaming/Recording
5) Bluetooth Headset Support
6) Option to Sort Trophies by Date Received
7) Increase Time Limit on ShareFactory (I was hoping for an hour, but I could make do with 30 minutes), add Screenshot support, and in general keep on improving it.
These are just the things off the top of my head that I want to see after 2.0. This looks great, though, and I can’t wait to test out SharePlay!
Keep it up…this is great news
