Moon Hunters Coming to PS4, PS Vita in 2015

Moon Hunters

Hi PlayStation.Blog! I’m Tanya, the lead designer of Moon Hunters. Moon Hunters is coming to PS4 and PS Vita in late 2015, all thanks to our amazing community supporting on Kickstarter. The campaign has been going even better than we hoped, and if you’re one of our backers, I really hope I can find you and give you a backer hug as soon as possible.

If you haven’t heard of Moon Hunters, it’s a 1-to-4-player, mythology-building action RPG. Set in a fantastical ancient Mesopotamia, you play as one of the heroes trying to figure out what’s happened to the all-powerful Moon, which has gone missing.

Along the way, you journey through a world that’s different every time, and make decisions that show your personality. Your personality traits determine your reputation, but also how you’re remembered in legend after you’re gone. If you’re truly memorable, you might even become a symbol of heroism as a constellation in the night sky, visible in all future playthroughs.

It’s a relatively short game for just one play-through, just one to three hours, but the world is randomly generated and you’ll need to try it a few times in a few different ways to unlock all of the character classes, tribes, and biomes.

If you play alone, you’ll be just one hero, out on your own in a dangerous world. But you can bring up to three friends to adventure together, fighting monsters and figuring out what’s going on with the cult of the evil Sun. We only have a little bit of time left, but I’m personally hoping we reach the $170k stretch goal, which will allow us to turn one of my favorite character designs (a Sun Cultist) into a playable character. He’ll be a bit of a bad-guy anti-hero kind of protagonist, which is always fun. If we don’t reach it, he’ll probably still be an interesting enemy to fight…

Kitfox Games is a little indie team of four here in Montreal, Canada, and we originally came up with Moon Hunters as the pitch of our dream game to the Square Enix Collective, almost a year ago now. We’re really glad the internet seems to be as excited about it as we are, so we feel safe pouring our heart and soul into it for next year!

We have a few limited-edition backer rewards available only through Kickstarter, so please do chip in if the game interests you, and/or join our newsletter. I promise we’ll put your funds and enthusiasm to excellent use as we develop the game! Thanks for reading!

  • Wow, the art style is looking right up my alley. Can’t wait to see more of this in the future!

  • Sooooo one might be safe in assuming that Moon Wizards confirmed?

  • That commenter came from the moon.

  • No clue, couldn’t find any game footage to base a comment on.

Looks pretty 8bit to me, but love some of those at psone prices.

Will check it out more, when we know more.

  • looks awesome will be keeping my eye on this one.

  • So is there a discount on the game at release for donations?

  • The video in the Kickstarter uses in-game footage, recorded from the engine. The only exception is the “grow your tribe” scene — that one’s a mockup. The rest is from our prototype work. :)

We’ll also be hosting a livestream starting in 30 mins, from 1pm to 5pm EST, feel free to drop by and ask any questions! http://www.twitch.tv/xinranliu

  • I’m so torn. I don’t like backing KS campaigns that aren’t in USD, but this game certainly looks awesome….but then I’d also have to choose PC or Vita, which would be another tough choice! Decisions decisions….

    • Why do you not like backing non-US campaigns? :) Also, you can make your decision later, closer to the game’s launch, when we send the survey.

  • One thing that isn’t mentioned in the article is that the vita version would be single player game.

    • Currently we only guarantee single-player. We’ll look into ad-hoc multiplayer once we get the development kits, and hope for the best. :)

  • This looks cool, consider me interested

  • If we back on Kickstart can we get a ps4 or vita code at release?

  • @Emerald_Swords, not necessarily. They just haven’t had much time with the dev kit yet, so they don’t want to make promises.

  • This game looks neat, but my problem with Kickstarter is that developers are asking us to fund a game that may or may not turn out as promised, let alone actually be released. Yet we take all the risk and get no return on our investment. Sony or other publishers should take on the risk for these games, not us end-users.

I know many disagree, but this is just my opinion. It’s cool that games like this can be created through the help of Kickstarter, but the current model really needs to be restructured to protect “investors” (heavy emphasis on “QUOTES”).

    • I think it’d be great if publishers would fund more “risky” games too, but it’s difficult because they don’t just want a good game out of it — they want a return on investment. Based on my experience in MMOs, Facebook games, and mobile games, I’d much rather be beholden to someone who wants an awesome game than someone who wants me to be “as profitable as possible”.

  • Hi from a fellow game developer based in Montreal! I will certainly check your game out! :)

  • “Moon Hunters, it’s a 1-to-4-player, mythology-building action RPG. Set in a fantastical ancient Mesopotamia”

    You have me.

“a world that’s different every time, … It’s a relatively short game … but the world is randomly generated”

    And you lost me.

  • Holy ****, just realized that this was posted by Tanya Short! Well we talked at the MIGS last year or the year before. Can’t really remember. Well good luck in your project!

  • Wiil there be online multiplayer for the ps4 and ps vita ?? it only says for mac and pc

    • We’ll try to get online multiplayer for PS4, but we aren’t sure yet how difficult it will be, so we aren’t guaranteeing it (yet). Wish us luck!

  • Wow where did this gem come from?? This looks so right up my alley!!

  • this looks cool!

  • Another retro title that looks like a dollar Android game. Hurray.

  • @14

Kickstarter just made some pretty hefty changes to combat exactly that. Developers are on the hook to deliver the project, as promised. If they don’t, there are quite a few steps that can be taken to rectify the problem, up to and including legal action.

Developers using Kickstarter HAVE to deliver, or they’re screwed.

  • Looks interesting. And real time combat (not a fan of turn based). Might pick it up for the Vita.

  • Can you keep Android games off of Playstation consoles please?

  • I love it! Can’t wait to play this game on the vita!

  • @25

    Agree with you.

Yet I’ve come to realize it would’t bother me as much if prices were fair and not so high. I mean, let’s face it, there’s not good development for Vita, and PS4 needs more time still. So a little indie game shouldn’t hurt, even if it runs in android as well.

The problem is not the existence of it, but having to pay an average $15 dollars for it, while the same game is over 2 dollars on steam or free on android (with publicity of course).

It’ not the game but the price the problem

  • I really dig the art style. Kinda like Hyper Light Drifter. Gonna get it for my Vita. :)

  • YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

  • I don’t trust kickstarter campaigns as there are no guarantees. Good luck!

  • Thanks for bringing it out on the Vita!

Hope my Vita shoelaces were influential. :-)

  • PS VITA? Shut up, and take my money.

  • Looks good. Checked out the video on the kick starter site.

  • why do must games come to playtion late like peggle 2 ive been playing that on my xbox one for 4 mouth and on pc 5 mouth and we at sony have to wait another mouth at lease give it for free for plus since its old game and xbox one has it free in the ea acess vult for everyone and sony is in comtion with xbox one last time I checkd

  • I looks amazing… But late 2015… Please don’t leave it and finish it :) you have my support, day 1 buy for me ;) good luck guys! :)

  • I liked the vibe from the trailer. I also like that it’s an RPG that I don’t have to drop 70 hours on.

  • Wow!!!
    it looks damn good..
    I want to see more!

  • Eh, I’ll wait for the reviews. I was slightly interested until I heard how short it was.

  • there arent any specifications for preordering a non computer ver. is there gonna be a way to choose, say, the ps4 as the system preordered from? and what about the extra stuff, is it gonna be included, or possibly added later as dlc, that may very well have to be bought? its never actually laid out like that on kickstarter, the project gets funded, and the people supporting for something like a console release gets screwed in the end. so could you clarify those things?

  • Really digging the art style. I’ll keep my eye on this for the future.

  • Ok…. this looks amazing. So glad you guys got the backers to make this happened. Day one buy for sure.

  • The concept sounds awesome, and I love the cool retro look of the graphics. I’m a big fan of RPGs (not enough of them on PS4 yet), procedurally generated content, and tons of replay value. So I’m definitely interested in this.

  • Definitely gonna keep an eye for this… and hopefully be able to pledge soon. : )

  • Indies are the best. I don’t care of they aren’t triple A title material, they are awesome. Keep on bringing them to the Vita, I am loving it.
