Destiny: Preload Now and Prepare for Tuesday
Destiny

Hi everybody – Since we’re just days away from the launch of Destiny on PS4 and PS3, I wanted to let you know that the game is now available for pre-load on PlayStation Store in the U.S., Canada and Latin America.

This means if you’ve pre-ordered Destiny digitally via PlayStation Store, you’ll be able to begin downloading the game on PS4 or PS3 starting now. Once you’ve downloaded the game, you’ll be ready for the official Destiny launch this Tuesday, September 9th.

Here are your options for pre-loading Destiny:

  • Take no action; Destiny will begin automatically downloading, provided that “auto-download” has been enabled on your PS4 or PS3. Over the next few days, your system will check for updates and the game will begin downloading by Monday, in time for the release on Tuesday.
  • If you can’t wait until then, you can enable the download manually. In PlayStation Store, navigate to the Destiny game page and click the “download” button. If you haven’t yet preordered, you can preorder and then begin downloading.

The game won’t be available to play until 12:00am Pacific Time / 3:00am Eastern Time on September 9th, but you’ll be ready for the ultimate Destiny experience on PlayStation.

Have a great weekend!

  • I’m a bit confused

  • I have less of a problem with the 3 hour wait, and more of a problem with the fact that it is unnecessary. There have been a handful of digital games that have unlocked at 12am EST recently (Madden being the most recent example), so it makes it seem as if this was a DECISION instead of a technicality.

From a consumer perspective, this lowers the value proposition of pre-loading the game, especially when considering how pre-loading has been both marketed and perceived by the public. “Oh, I can preload so I can play immediately when the game releases on 9/9!” The fact that we will (hopefully) be able to just start it up when it unlocks and play still stands, but it just doesn’t sit well with customers when they could have had that extra time by buying a disc version.
    ing….

  • Furthermore, so much preparation has taken place in the weeks leading up to this. Plans have been made with friends. Schedules have been altered with the assumption that it would ‘unlock’ at 12am EST. Heck, for the past couple of weeks, the friends of mine who are picking up a hard copy have been loathing the fact that while they are standing in line and driving home, I’ll be on playing. They made this common assumption based on the fact that I would have it pre-loaded.

From a technical standpoint, I can’t imagine how this could be the ‘best’ move for Sony’s servers. I don’t like all the negative talk about the PSN, but it’s not unwarranted. There is no question about it: A rolling start of US players, based of their local timezones, would be less detrimental to the servers. There is no way around that fact. I now worry about their stability once I get my chance to play at 3am.

I love the many pluses that come along with digital purchases. I think they still out-weigh the cons. But a simple change to the release plans for pre-loaded games would make it a much easier sell to the masses. I can’t see any business reason as to why giving your customers yet another reason to like something is ever a bad thing…

  • the fact that no on bothered to respond to our questions abut the 3am start time means i wont be pre ordering a digital game again. Iwant my east coast purchase to have a 12am EXT launch time just like if I purchased my game at the local gamestop

I mean the one time you want to stagger the crowd for that heavy load on the servers they don’t. Well now expect me to buy each and evry ps4 retail and trade it in when i’m done. way to screw yourself over Sony BRAVO!!!!!

  • Just here to add my voice to the collective angry shouting at Sony. Poor choice, Sony. Poor choice.

  • Wow Sony you guys screwed east coast gamers nice job dummies:/ 12am should be just that 12am. They should get it sooner than us west coast people.

  • Wow. First off, Sony really screwed the pooch on this one. I will not be purchasing Digitally again, EVER. This may be an isolated incident, but really, it just shows the glaring weakness in buying digitally. There are other issues, like not be able to sell the game, not getting any of the Manuals or box art and also not being able to take the game to a friends. Now we can add “might not be able to play the game when physical copies can” and it is really just the last straw for me.

All they had to do was ‘enable’ Destiny to play once the download was done, and let the Bungie servers handle the start times. Sony, not sure why you wont fix this or why you wont at least comment on why you wont fix it. Bad form for sure.

  • Between the 3:00am EST launch on PSN and the VERY late announcement of the Upgrade deal for digital with no word on it working in reverse with the known PSN cancellation policy, it makes this launch look like amature hour. I expect this level of incompetence from Sony, but I hoped that Bungie would bring something to the table to help.

Look, I know the most talented network people go to Microsoft and Sony gets left with community college graduates, but come on. You guys could at least try to make it function like most other online networks.

  • Oh, and as an added Frak job, once you preorder digitally, you cant cancel when sony does something as Frak’d up as this. We have no recourse as a consumer and that is or should be, against the law IMO.

  • Destiny is an ONLINE ONLY game. So it doesn’t matter whether you have the digital edition or the disk. The Destiny servers will not go live in the USA until 12:00am PT or 3:00 ET which is the exact same time! Even if you have the disk there’s nothing you can do until that time.

  • 12 am Pacific time is the exact same time as 3:00am Eastern time. Further explanation: If you live in NYC and have a friend in L.A. then you will both be able to play the game at the exact same time. 12am Pacific IS 3:00am Eastern…. When Bungie opens server access then it’s open to everyone in that gaming zone, i.e North America.

  • @255 Just to put it short for you: http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/09/08/destiny-offers-australian-based-servers read before you start making comments

  • @255 The Bungie servers are going live world wide as soon as it hits 12:00 somewhere in the world, which is monday morning, as NZ/Aus will hit 9/9 16-hours before the east coast in the states.

it is not bungie that is stopping us play it is SONY, they are the ones unlocking it at midnight PST, so its not about the 3 hours, its about the 16 before that.

  • So the servers are up in 45 minutes but Sony wont let us play for 19 hours 45 minutes. Why are they doing that?

    So annoying. :(

  • I plan on complaining to anyone that will listen as soon as the customer service is up and running at 8am EST.

  • @ 255 Bungie is bringing the servers online at 8am est on 9/8/14. So any one who has a physical copy can start playing

  • Nice Sony the servers are already on Today MONDAY Sept 8 but you want to make me wait til Sept 9 at 3am??? Good one that is the last time I buy a game from the PSN store.

  • I’ve downloaded the game, the timer shows 11 hours and 10 mins to wait & counting down.

I’m in the uk, happy to wait 11hrs :)

  • Im not sure why you are happy. I could o to the store now and grab a disc and be playing immediately. But because I bought the digital (convenience) copy I have to wait until tomorrow. Not the end of the world. But irritating.

  • well ppl servers are up and running, got a modded 360 and running the game as we speak and as I start the game I get a massive install of 5.51GB so I guess thats another 1 of play time lost once SONY flips the switch

  • Really disappointed, had you advertise that the digital copy meant a 3 hour delay I would have stuck with my store pre-order and played at midnight. The whole allure was to be able to play at midnight and not have to wait on lines, not not be able to play at midnight and waiting for 3 hours.

This will be the last digital copy I purchase, it’s crappy to delay it till 3am and crappier to not announce this is how it will be 3 months ago letting me decide if thats something I want to put up with.

  • Can’t believe the servers are up right now and I have to wait another 19 hours to play with everyone else. this is bull

  • Sorry Sony. This will be the first and last time I buy digital.

  • I cannot believe that VP of Sony Network Entertainment who signed his name to this post is or must be to ashamed to respond or at least have the courtesy to have another employee post. I thought one of the huge selling points of next gen was its all about digital. Pulling stunts like this and it makes it hard to understand if Sony truly has their gamers in mind.

  • I preorder the digital version and i was wondering how to take it over to ps4

  • @267

Agreed. Sony the least you can do is provide an explanation, show some back bone. Or is this the new level of your customer service now that you have converted so many of us previous X360 owners away from the X1?

  • I download the digital version on my PS$ but the Vanguard Armory will not Download. Is this an issue or will it download at a later time?

  • Well Sony…people are already online playing as of this moment…except for those of us that pre-ordered with you! Fix this asap!

  • 1-This is my first time buying something pre-order on PSN and after this experience it the last time.If you got that choice of pick up copy of destiny before or at midnight do that you will be able to play the game before the digital copy.

2-The server are up for destiny and i cant play after paying near 100$ for the game a month in advance. That just wrong when people are actually playing this game as i type this…

3-The cost of the game on the network is the same and you cant play before the physical copy that just plain stupid. If pick up the game at a local store at midnight i can play before the dump digital copy.

  • come on sony. Time to activate the digital copies. Its not cool.

  • This is truly bad form, Sony. I live outside the US & preordering digital was really my only option, if I wanted to play as soon as game went live. Well, we know how that’s going. IT’S NOT!

I do believe this will be my last digital preorder. The message I get from all this is, do not preorder ANYTHING digital from PSN. I repeat, this is truly bad form, Sony.

  • Guys get a life, enjoy the game when u’re able to play, does 1 day or less really matter?

I bet alot of you share accounts and complain about half a day missing of what?

  • Locking us out makes no sense. If the servers did not go live until 3am, I could understand, but that isn’t the case.

I, like many others on this forum, will not be buying digital ever again until these issues are fixed.

Sorry Sony, but you are not making digital purchases any more enticing than retail.

  • I feel bad for everyone that lives on the east coast. 3 hours is a long time, after waiting for a year+ for some of us, that 3 hours is a huge deal. Even for me, 1 hours is ludicrous, its horrific, its just terrible business. I have waited over a year and now they have the nerve to make me wait one extra hour? And I saved almost $20 cancelling my LE for the DGE through PSN, and they cannot give me one extra hour?

O.k., I am done with my sarcastic rant.

Seriously, thanks Sony for all your support over the many years!

  • Why is everyone blaming Sony? I think Bungie made the decision. Xbox users also have to wait until 12 pacific. I’m assuming bungie chose this time because they are located in the west coast. Although I will say, they should’ve rolled out the unlocks by timezone.

  • @278 Yes, they did. Bungie decided to change it however instead opening servers right as Tuesday came around most likely AUS. Sony decided to keep to the original plan and not change it like Bungie had.

  • For the east coasters complaining about a three hour wait, it’s not that bad. I’m in Japan and I did the digital edition and now I have to wait about 16 more hours (and the servers went live for me about four hours ago)

I just want to know how IGN is streaming their copy if the servers in the US aren’t live?

  • @280 The servers EVERYWHERE are live as far as I know. It’s just you can’t launch the game if you pre-ordered digitally because of Sony.

  • @GURADIAN_ANGEL Servers went live for everyone when it was released in NZ. Which was 8am EST on Monday. Bungie has even stated on their blog it’s sonys moronic decision to release this three hours late for EST

  • What I love about this is how they make the specific choice to ignore lol. How was madden 2015 unlocked at 12 est? How can you contradict yourself this badly?

What a terrible first experience with playstation..

  • Madden developer is located in Orlando.

  • Moderate my comment, you guys messed up, now fix it. My freind is getting physical copy and the only thing he has to do is drive 20 minutes back home, throw the disc in there and wait for a small 7 GB install and update, only to be driving around in his stupid red sparrow, while im trying to sleep and get a little energy to play the game ive been waiting fora year and then get up groggy, play 5 hours and head back to work to do my job the right way. Horrible, I myself will debate on buying digital again. The Divison! HA! I will physical copy thank you very much.

  • Doesn’t matter. The devs will still get your money. Win/win.

  • This is unacceptable. If I knew all my friends who preordered at GameStop and Walmart would be playing 2-3 hours before me I would not have preordered on PSN. Who do I call to complain? as I want my money back. 3 hours of time is not worth the $1 in gas I saved by not going to Walmart to get the disk.

  • Why don’t they realize the rest of the world revolves around EST and release games at midnight EST? Geez. Only in gaming is something bases on pacific time.

  • @289 Even the damn stock market runs on EST, Christ Sony headquarters in NEW YORK! OF ALL PLACES! So dumb, I hate PST, I hate that true gamers are PST, it is so dumb. EST is the home of sane people, that demand punctuality and people to do their jobs right. When you do something dumb like this and con away my money to hold me for 3 extra hours shows a lack of commitment to certain people. Those people being over 500,000 Digital Downloaders. Good luck Sony.

  • How long will it be before a qualified sony representative answers the complaints? There are over 3,000 votes on this blog post and the average rating is a 1.13, with almost 300 comments. This is shameful customer service.

  • @291 because they know they messed up, they are just dying for it to be 3am. But thats ok, I am not gonna buy a AAA Title game from the PSN store ever again, maybe I will not buy any game from PSN other than DLC and add ons because I have no choice. Bite me Sony. So mad at you, I can’t believe you are my company’s partner.

  • They will NEVER answer. That’s how they do it. Well, ok, they might answer after 12:00 am Pacific time when it’s no longer an issue. They seem to have an “If we ignore it, it will go away” sort of attitude. WRONG!!! If you ignore it, it festers & gets infected & then must be removed. Wake up Sony! Do you have any idea how many people bought a PlayStation just to play this game? Of course you do, you’ve got their $. Shame on you, Sony. Shame.

  • Should have been a rolling release by time zone. Not a great way to start off digital purchases at all.
