Today, PS4 and PS3 owners will get a chance to experience Bungie‘s galaxy-spanning epic Destiny for the first time. Assuming the role of a newly revived Human, Awoken, or Exo, players will explore the ruins of a Russian Cosmodrome and battle hordes of formidable Fallen and feral Hive, all while earning new skills and collecting increasingly effective weapons and armor.
I had an early opportunity to play the Beta, and I’ve collected my initial notes below. While this post is by no means comprehensive, I hope it’ll help get you up to speed before you hop in yourself. And if you’re in the Beta, please share your tips, observations, and feedback in the comments below.
If you played or read about Destiny’s Alpha last month, you might be wondering what’s changed for the Beta. The answer: plenty! Perhaps most notably, the Beta fills in many narrative gaps with pre-rendered and in-engine cinematics, fleshing out more of the backstory and making this feel much more like a world I want to explore. These scenes are fully voice-acted; your character even chimes in with his or her own voice from time to time! Your Ghost companion’s dialogue has been refined as well, and generally fits better into the overall story, complete with computerized filters and other cool audio effects that lend a bit more personality and color.
A few more enhancements I noticed in the Beta:
- Music is more prevalent during the Beta’s more intense action sequences.
- Screen-filling visual effects that punctuate important in-game events look to have been punched up, like a display-wide violet tinge and screen-shake when a massive ship drops a platoon of enemies onto the field.
- Certain areas are now dubbed “Darkness Zones.” Respawning is disabled in these sections, meaning you and your Fireteam need to stay on point to make it through.
- On the main overworld map, the Tower displays small, green icons to indicate when rewards or messages are waiting for you there.
- The character customization system can still yield some pretty awesome looking Guardians.
For those with a more competitive nature, the Crucible — Destiny’s PvP multiplayer mode — awaits. This pits players against one another in glorious combat, and keeps things extra-interesting by tossing vehicles into the mix on larger maps (such as the moon-based level I played here). Players can commandeer large, armed conveyances or deploy their handy Sparrow whenever needed — or they can stick to an on-foot approach to ensure an instant offensive is always an option. The mode I played saw my team capturing and holding three control points, while taking special care to eliminate those who would take over our post.
These are but a few observations I made in my short time with the Beta ahead of its official launch today. Once you’re in, let’s compare notes in the comments! Destiny launches on PS4 and PS3 on September 9th this year, but you can play the Beta starting today by pre-ordering the game, either at retail or on PlayStation Store. See you in the Tower.
I have the 3 game codes from bungie, but on my ps4 it says I can’t download the beta because I do not own destiny???
@229 not only for PSN preorders. Just pre orders in general. I pre-ordered from GS and I’m in.
Says the same thing even when I to the ps store on my laptop… I checked my profile at bungie and its the correct console (ps4)… soooo WTF!?!?
@bevpbon83 You tried redeeming all 3 codes and none of them worked?
@EJStrat I ordered from GS too…. I still can’t get it… howd u do it???
I had one code on my receipt, entered it on the bungee website and they gave me 3 codes… I haven’t gotten to use any of the 3 yet… on my console, when I selected the beta, I don’t get the option to download (you do not own destiny etc)… same thing when I go to Ps store on my computer…
i pre ordered the PS4 version from gamestop…they gave me a 9 digit alpha numeric code that doesn’t work, but then said i had to go to the web site to redeem for the actual beta code???? i havent received any emails about it, ive been waiting patiently for it, bu now its wearing THIN and Im getting pissed off.
@bevpbon83 you have to redeem at least one of those three codes on the PS Store to get the download.
@Haskell420 I got my Bungie email late too but you can go directly to the site and view what the three codes are. I’d send you the link but this blog filters out comments with links.
@dinkin… where in the store? Under redeem codes?
@bevpbon83 Yes. Good luck!
@256
You need to redeem one of the codes on the PS4 Playstation network. Log in to the network and scroll to the bottom. There will be a redeem code selection there. The beta download is only for people who have already redeemed the code or pre-order on PSN
Wow I’m an idiot…. lol… thank you dinkin-flicka!
IM IN! YAYYYY!
Got two beta codes. Anybody want them?
I got 2 if anyone wants them too!
@haskell420
Bungie did not email out the codes. You need to log back in bungie.net. Then click the drop down tab next to your name and choose profile. Then click on codes. That’s where your codes are.
Scratch that. They did email out the codes but mine came at 2:19 central today. So roughly 3 hours after the start here. Better off going to the website
They said they sent email’s, so where mine? No key No Beta and i ordered months ago Sony you suck. Happens every time. And we are entitled to this since American PS store already took our money if we pre-ordered . I want my key and codes can’t play with friends without them
PSN:: STP4U2B
I suggest next time let us preload before hand so your servers don’t crash especially when you actually have to download a full 10gbs after the initial download from the store. It launched at 1pm EST i may get to play it by 7pm EST
Any extra codes Messege me with one on PSN please I want to get the download started
I’m currently installing the beta and the transferring game content portion is insanely slow (about 1% every 5 minutes for the 10 GB download). Not sure if anyone is experiencing this issue. I really didn’t think my internet could be that slow or is the server just overwhelmed at the moment?
I already PAY for PlayStation Plus why more for a buggy beta i must buy?????
@bevpbon83 Yay! See you Starside!
For those complaining and saying they are going to switch to Xbox…. Let me tell you a story. I got my xbox one the day titanfall launched and couldn’t even set up the system cause it first needed to do all the day one setup stuff which the system is unusable without. But sadly because titanfall brought XBL to it’s knees I couldn’t use the system at all. Guess what I did? I took my wife and kids out for dinner and got out of the house for several hours. Then when I came home I boxed up the xbox one and returned it?… No I turned on the system after everything had calmed down logged in fine and set everything up. This isn’t a Sony problem this is a problem with launching an online application to everyone all at once the obvious solution to this is to do a slow rollout which I’m sure you’d complain about as well because your not in the first wave of rollout. This is not a big deal and if it is a big deal to you then I think you have some life choices you need to seriously reconsider.
If anyone has an extra beta key, please send it to me. I would love to play this game, am pre-ordering tomorrow from gamestop, but beta codes may be gone by then. Please send to rockyawatson@yahoo.com and it will be much appreciated.
@Haskell420 That’s right. I, too, pre-ordered from Gamestop. You have to go to the Bungie.net/beta site and register (if you haven’t already). Then they give you beta codes that you go to the PSN store and redeem your codes there. My download has been running for about 2 and a half hours and I’m at 38%.
Well, PSN ate one of my codes. Redeemed it earlier, PSN crashed, now I don’t have a download link and the code comes up as ‘used’. Not cool.
im so mad ive been downloading for 4 hours and im on 39%
Hey gang, can’t wait to play I been looking forward to a game that might truly give us a next Gen experience hope this one is not all hype. But anyways if anyone wants another party members to explore with send me a friend request @ PicklesThePsycho I just got a ps4 and had to remake my gamer tag cuz of my terrible password memory I was unable to transfer my old PS3 friends. Anyways I’m chill and layed back just looking for some likewise gamers to blow junk and stuff up with.
I started my download a few hours ago and Im only at 2% THIS IS BS!
please does any one havean extra code for ps4 can you email it to me or something
Anyone have an extra PS3 code they can message to me on PSN? :D
@teddyw85 I have one. Whats your email?
RoxStar78 Do you still need a Beta code?
YES! YES! YES!
Been playing it, and not really in to it. Canceling preorder.
Canceling preorder.
anybody have an extra ps3 beta code? if you could send it to me on ps3, that would be awesome. Thanks and keep on gaming
This is game is OUT OF CONTROL!!!
teddyw85 you still a PS 4 code?
Nahela go to the PSN website on your PC, log in, look for your downloads and click “Download to your PS3/PS4”, that happened to me too, redeemed the code, PSN crashed, then the code said “already redeemed”, but there was no option to download from the actual system, so go and do it thru the website and it works that way, I guess the server are over saturated with everyone dowloading/redeeming
Asked way back on page 2, but if anyone has a spare code for PS3, message me :'(
Please if anybody has an extra ps3 code, please send to me on ps3. Thanks
If you pre-ordered Destiny from the PlayStation Store, you do not need an email code or system message to download the beta. Check your library and download it from there. Alternatively, you can go to the PS Store and go to Games > Destiny > Beta or Games > Demos > Destiny. You should then see an option to download the beta.
@AkPunk24 still need a ps3 code?
yes
Thanks man, your awesome
Man. I cannot freaking wait, until I get home later. I gave a bunch of codes to friends, for both versions.
Any extra PS3 codes?
