Update: PS4 system software update 1.70 is confirmed to land in North America on April 30th.
As we mentioned last month during GDC, we’ll be releasing a major system software update for PS4 that will add some exciting new features that many of you have been asking for. Today, I’m pleased to announce a few of those features from PS4 system software update (v1.70) will be available soon, including features that were incorporated as a result of your great feedback. This will be a significant update, and today we’re excited to bring you a sneak peek of just a few things you can look forward to.
Introducing: SHAREfactory
The 1.70 update will enable SHAREfactory, our new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos:
With SHAREfactory, you can now easily combine your captured video clips for editing, personalize them with special effects using filters, transitions, and themes, as well as share them with your friends and social networks. SHAREfactory also allows you to personalize your videos by adding text, stickers, and a set of included audio tracks, as well as video commentary with picture-in-picture capability with PlayStation Camera. It also allows you to import your original music to add to the custom soundtrack for your video.
Share With the World
Once you’re done with your masterpiece, you can easily share your SHAREfactory videos to Facebook, or export them to an external USB storage device to upload them elsewhere, another new feature coming as part of the 1.70 system software update. Other PS4 SHARE enhancements include the ability to change the recording time of your gameplay to shorter increments, the ability to change who you share your clips with on the SHARE screen, and the removal of default saves for screenshots and video clips. In addition to these SHARE enhancements, the 1.70 update will allow you switch off HDCP, enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions — a feature I know many of you have been waiting for. We are excited to see what the PlayStation Nation does with these new social features, and cannot wait to get them into your hands!
Play as Soon as the Game is Released
Providing you with immediate access to your games is a priority designed into PS4, and something we will always strive to make better. We’ve had a great response from PS4 fans about the Play as You Download feature, the snappy load times when launching and playing games, and the general speed and responsiveness of the UI. The 1.70 update adds features to build on this idea and make it faster to play the games you pre-order with an auto pre-download capability, which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release. If you have the auto-download feature enabled, it will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day.
As I mentioned earlier, some of these features were a direct result of the great feedback we’ve been getting from you, our dedicated gamer community. We enjoy listening to your comments, and encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts with us. And this is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot more coming in PS4 system software update v1.70 and beyond. The PS4 experience will constantly evolve, and new innovative ideas can come from anywhere to ensure the platform continues to deliver the best in gaming and entertainment every time you turn it on.

Way back at the end of October, a lot of people voiced that it would be nice to see DLNA playback. I’m aware people have said it again and again, and now I’m saying it again… but isn’t that part of the point? @yosp even tweeted:
“Thanks for the feedback to the lack of MP3 and DLNA support at the launch of PS4. I’ll share with the PS4 Dev team for future consideration.”
So, it’s great that “you’re listening”. And yes, these updates are really good. But can you clarify if it *is* being worked on, or has been dropped? Even saying ‘Sorry chaps, it’s not happening’, would stop people constantly badgering you about it. Surely that’s something worth commenting on?
Given I know you guys have a good DLNA stack (I’ve been at plugfests where Sony have been testing it), I wouldn’t have thought it would be a massive amount of work to add this (unless of course there’s not enough spare grunt left for the OS when playing games). Certainly less that the effort you’ve spent on SHAREFactory.

Some requests:
1. Evernote on PS Vita and maybe PS4 or at least make it so we can use it on their browsers.
2. Public Wishlist of games and ability to receive and gift games. <———why hasn't this been done yesterday ?
3. More detailed About me/Profiles add more text characters for PS Plus users. Was expecting PS4 profiles to be more beefy this generation but it's more of the same, please look into that.
4. PS Blog / PS Forums Super PlayStation Hybrid Community App for PS4.
5. Gundam games on PS4. <———–most important of all

What we really need is folders. I already have 22 games, the list is too long.
Put music/video unlimited in the video and tv folder. Quit messing it up.

Please change the parental control from global settings to user settings. At the moment the parental control is a disaster for families with children.
First off, this is an open community: OPEN TO EVERYONE, BUT DON’T BE A JERK.
1. Overall UI enhancements: Theme editor (w/ sound support), accordion style folders in an x and y conf. (ask me to clarify if needed)
Animated JPEG can make a theme very dynamic but heavy to process.
2. Give them MP3 support and DLNA, it’s getting annoying now looking at these threads.
3. Sign-on all connected devices (to connected user) when remote play is activated, should allows us to bypass the current issue.
4. 3D Bluray Playback… Seriously, where is the PS3 team?
5. Pin an app, always.
6. Friend Management, please clean that up, it will get worse.
7. Revamped user profiles, in other words, each user profile can be customized to suit the user, show off their trophies etc.
8. Fix the share feature, it stops recording playback.
9. Slim that UI while playing a game, minimal memory footprint means a faster responding system when inviting friends to play with.
10. Sub-account promotion from main account (toggle this with a boolean), account rename (w/ history, done with aliases, make them searchable along with the actual account name).
Just throwing these out there to whoever is listening.

Well since you want to have our feedback here it is:
1- Give us the ability to either change region OR at least an option to have different wallets and access to different stores. I’ve chose Hong Kong originally as my region but now I only have access to US dollar so i had to create a separate account to be able to buy stuff digitally which led me into trouble since I can’t have 2 accounts on my PSVITA so I can’t use my PSVITA IGC. so please please please let us at least have access to different stores with different wallets for different currencies. For example I might have 200 HKD in my Hong Kong wallet, 0 pounds in my UK wallet and 17.49 dollars in my US account to use on the respective store.
2- Change the UI’s background music, it’ so depressing.
3- Let us be able to party chat while on remote play, it’s so bad that we can’t use microphones on remote play.
4- Add support for NTFS external devices, a digital ready machine must have things like this.
5- LED on the PS4 itself must be blue when the console is turned on to match the color of DS4’s LED! Also it would be good to give developers the ability to manipulate the PS4’s LED colors since it’s more visible than DS4’s LED while playing and when combined with DS4’s LED in can be used very creatively. for example in Mercenary Kings PS4 LED can show how heavy your backpack is while DS4’s LED can show which item you’re currently holding.

Screw logic, patch the game into Netflix or something. After coming out with UPDATE 2x – Please create Singstar for PS4 (feminist wife idea – She even offered to buy Starbucks for Shuhei Yoshida (up to grande size only, no whip).
4- Please patch in HD-DVD support for 920p. I need to know what happens after Neo (a.k.a Thomas A. Anderson) goes blind in the Matrix. Does he learn Braille and become a handicapped finalist on Dancing with Stars Season 14?
5-Please create an USB-to- EBT card reader adapter to pay for DIGITAL games (~$~). If this option is not available, please enable me to pay with Monopoly money.
6- Super important: If you got this far, I hope you got a laugh out of the above. If you did not smile at any of the above , you have to forward this to 6 of your friends, or the IRS will audit your tax return.

Can we PLEASE change our names in the next couple of updates? I did this when I was 10 and did not realize how stupid it sounded or that it was permanent :( but I do love this video editor so keep the good stuff coming! :D
Have you guys looked into certain headsets having really low mic volumes? I’ve been streaming using Tritton AX720’s, but no matter what I do (edit the settings and whats not), the mic volume is always really low. This results in me having to lower my game volumes by a lot. And even then, it still doesn’t work well. It’s really annoying considering games like MGSV:GZ have no option to lower the volume. I’ve also heard of other headsets having this problem as well. If you haven’t, look into it please?
Any plans to remove the share restriction on the sub-accounts?
That is so awesome! Just what I was waiting for. I knew you guys were working on something. After this update I would love to seen one role out with the ablitly to have my media content (music, pictures, videos) viewable on my PS4 and to make it personalized with my own background. That would be so nice.
Are there any plans to increase the character limit for text chat in parties? The limit is lower than PS3 and it’s frustrating to have to have to break what you want to say into multiple messages, especially with the delay that occurs when you start typing with a keyboard.
PS4 Most Wanted:
1) Ability to change our PSN ID! (even if fee would be required)
2) Ability to turn off led light completely on the controller
3) More customization options of the UI, such as dynamic themes, more interesting avatars (dynamic avatars?), look of icons, different type of font etc.
4) Ability to go “invisible”, see who is logging in/out from your friendlist
5) Ability to upgrade sub accounts into master account.
6) Fix the auto-recording of videos. PS4 should always record last 15 min of gameplay, at the moment it’s all random. Can’t rely on this feature. Many people have problem with that I hope you guys are looking into it.

sharefactory seems cool but another icon on the main dashboard means one step closer to that thing becoming an unweildy mess! we NEED sorting options.
I’m talking:
-custom folders
-nested folders
i want to be able to sort my app content from my game content and then, additionally, sort my finished game content from my unfinished game content.
having neat-looking game icons interrupted by stock blue playstation images really distuprts the flow of the ui. I would like to have some control over that.
pre-loading sounds real cool, though. will it be a ps+ only thing or available to all? hope i’ll be able to try it out with my child of light pre-order at the end of the month!
oh and gee i hate to be all person demanding stuff on internet but i’d love for you to bring back context-sensitive ps button usage as well. you know, when a trophy pops, being able to go straight to your trophy list with a button push instead of going to the menu and working your way into it. maybe this could be a toggle for people who still want to go straight to menu? maybe a choice could pop up like ‘go to: menu, trophy list?’ that kinda thing. thanks for your time scott!
You guys should bring back the customizable UI screen themes. That’s a feature that had my Xbox buddies jealous . The same ol blue screen waves are getting old . And Native YouTube app?! plz and Ty
Some things I would love to see in a future update are:
– The ability to store and use media on the PS4’s harddrive (Music, Video & Photos)
– The ability to transfer media to and from a USB drive
– Media Server DLNA Streaming support
– The option to listen to music from the harddrive or DLNA while playing other software (not limited to just Music Unlimited)
– Organization options for Friends list (the ability to create groups of friends (like folders) and have a best/favorite friends list)
– More options for customization throughout the entire PS4
– Change the colour palette of the UI (background, tiles, etc)
– Add written status updates that our friends can see
– Folders for PS4 software
– Display your favorite trophies, on your PSN profile page
These are just a few of the things that I would absolutely love to see come in future PS4 updates. The PS4 has tons of potential to grow into something amazing in the near future, and I hope you guys take our feedback seriously. Thanks for the update!
one small thing i would like to see is the ability to scroll through your friends with the touchpad without having to actually go into the friends section. when you scroll over to friends it shows a few people who are online but you have to go all the way in to see everyone so it would be much easier to just scroll through whos currently online with the touchpad from outside the actual friends list.
I almost forgot, but PLEASE Fix the voice commands on PS4!
it’s insanely ridiculous how shallow they are right now, but I should be able to navigate most of the menus using only my voice. The fact that I can’t even start netflix, go into my settings or PSN friends list with it is a little ridiculous.
My pet peeve with the PS4 and Vita is that if you chat with someone via messages, when you go back to the PS3, you have a big bunch of new messages to mark read or delete…
If the messaging could sync… that would so be great!
Good, get rid of HDCP, I believe it’s making problems for my 7 year old TV. Also, I was hoping for a media player and UPnP client. C’mon the old PS3 has this.
I’d also like to leave my feedback here in regards to some of the smaller things that are missing on PS4 but were present on PS3, and that I really hope will be added to PS4 soon. It’s disappointing to see these things as a step backwards from PS3.
– Login notifications for friends. I understand if there are people with 1000 friends who don’t want constant notifications, but I don’t see why it has to be one-size-fits-all — please make it an option that can be enabled/disbaled like other notifications.
– In-game notifications for when text chat is received in a party. Currently I have to keep checking/guessing for when my girlfriend sends text chat messages, because there is no message notification when we’re in-game together.
– Increased character limit for text chat message. I mentioned this previously. The character limit for text chat messages in a party is far too restrictive. (At least double it in my opinion.)
– Option to pause downloads – Absolutely necessary for many of us.
Any progress on these features/issues would be greatly appreciated. It would make a big difference to some of us.

I have a PS3, a PS4 and a Vita and this thing is a total mess.
I want to remove old demos and crap. I want to only see what I bought. I want to only see PS3 downloads/purchases on my PS3, PS4 on PS4, only Vita purchases on Vita.

I actually want a ‘delete trophies’ feature. Not just ‘hiding’ the trophies, but actually deleting them.
And with that, I mean your overall trophy level shown on your PSN ID going down with it as well.

Uno sony you keep slaping ur players in the face, youtube is the most wanted feature for sharing watching injoying. Its mentioned just about on every update post, sony desides 2 charge us and we ok with that but then when we get our ps4s bam, ps3 has more abbilites just with youtube app, yall making xbox 1 tempting.
I am getting the impression that SONY keeps on avoiding the ‘Why can’t we save are Gameplay Videos direct to YouTube’? question i.e they keep saying save it to USB etc etc and do it that way etc etc, Hmm how odd :D
+ Instead of giving us loads of things every few months i would rather have a good update monthly at 1st with say 1 or 2 things that most people want. SONY needs to be quicker i think nowadays. Thanks for all this stuff anyway SONY;)
Another great update but, how about…
1. Expanded media codec for video and audio play back (mp3,mp4,wma,etc.,mpeg2-4,avchd,mkv,mov,flv, etc) I love having access to my home movies of my girls on my ps3 and would like to have them on my ps4 as well.
2. The blu ray and dvd needs to be optimized to meet the standards and features of a stand alone player.
3. How about a ps4 blu ray / media remote app for phones and tablets.

6 . The ability to tweak the camera settings to better match the rooms they are set up, it would be nice to tweak contrast, brightness, sharpness, etc.

Sounds like a fantastic update! I know you guys have been getting this a lot, but I miss some features from my PS3 on my PS4. For instance, I was surprised that gracenote.com support didn’t launch with the PS4. I liked seeing what Blu-Ray, etc was in the console instead of a generic disc icon! Plus, how did 3D Blu-Ray support NOT launch with the PS4? Sony was a pioneer with that technology!
