PlayStation Plus: January Preview

It’s almost time for the New Year, and we’re ready to kick-off 2014 in a big way. January’s Instant Game Collection will offer PlayStation Plus members loads of amazing titles, starting off with a new PlayStation 4 title — Don’t Starve. A wilderness survival game wrapped in a cute art style, you’ll take control of a Gentleman Scientist trying to make his way home from a mysterious place. Be warned – this is one of those games where you’ll die a lot, but if you ever get frustrated, just look at how cute your buddy Chester is and I’m sure everything will be okay.

For PlayStation 3 owners, you’ll be able to download three critically acclaimed games – DMC Devil May Cry, BioShock Infinite and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. DMC Devil May Cry is a reboot of the beloved franchise, and while Dante may have received a haircut and a new backstory, his weapons and fighting style should be fairly familiar to fans.

Created by the same folks who brought us BioShock, BioShock Infinite has received multiple Game of the Year nominations. This isn’t your average first-person shooter, you’ll gather vigors throughout your journey that will fling your enemies sky-high or unleash a horde of birds to peck at your foes.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons tugs at your heartstrings as you take control of two brothers (who would’ve guessed?), trying to cure their ailing father. You’ll be handling the sons with each analog stick, so once you get the hang of controlling two characters at once, you’ll need to solve various puzzles in order to save the day.

This month PlayStation Vita owners will be able to download Worms: Battle Island and Smart As. Worms: Battle Island stays true to the classic Worms formula of charming turn-based strategy gameplay. You can customize your wormy soldiers and use crazy weapons to take out the opposition.

Finally, Smart As will become your brain’s new best friend. Run through a series of mind-boggling challenges, and see where you stack up against your friends and other people in the world on the leaderboards. If you practice every day, maybe one day you’ll hit the top.

We’re also trying something new this month – we’ve created a video preview highlighting all of the titles you’ll receive as a Plus member, so give it a look and let me know what you think in the comments below!

  • Ps vita free games is kind of suck, ps4 is just okay, but ps3 free games is crazy awesome!!

  • The selection looks pretty great for January! I guess one question that I have would be: Why are there really great Playstation 3 games a lot of the time, while the PS4 and Vita selections are generally pretty lacking? No complaints here, I love PS Plus, but it seems like Don’t Starve is more of a niche indie game, while Smart As… and Worms: Battle Island are smaller, non-engrossing titles that are being used as filler.

  • cant wait for when ps4 starts getting more stuff from ps+

  • @Total_Havok, are you saying that indie games are bad?

  • First time commenting on here, i must say this month coming up has awesome titles. I play Infinite it was awesome hope everyone enjoys that one, can’t wait for DMC though though i heard it was bad… :/

  • I must admit, the only game I’m really waiting for on Plus to go with my new Vita(been doing this for about a year, so I have a good collection) would be Ragnarok Odyssey. That going for free(just played the demo) would be pretty awesome.

  • Lovin’ th

  • Lovin’ the PS3 line up, but really disappointed in the Vita games. Was really looking forward to more native vita titles. Well, maybe next time, i guess.

Sorry bout the last comment though, posted by mistake.

  • I’ve been reluctant to join PSplus over the years, but the Black Friday deal was just too tempting. And I’ve got to say as someone who only owns a PS3, that I am VERY happy with PSplus. If the rest of the year is as awesome as December and January, I’m really looking forward to days ahead!

  • great Lineup, the PS4 game looks interesting, the PS3 games are really good and the PSP and PS VITA games are great too, i like more when you guys give a PSP game and a PS VITA game not just 2 VITA games because i Still like to play in my PSP, but nevertheless continue with the excelente work guys, thanks a lot.

  • PS4 owners get the shaft….

  • ps plus is so awesome, it make the ps3 come alive. Constantly giving me new great stuff to play! They never give filler. Great job! Ill be getting my simply because I have so many great titles to play still. ps4 in december 2014 but in the mean time Im rocking out my ps3. So far the ps3 has been my favorite console so far.

  • I have both of ps3 games DMC and Bishock, excelent games, and awesome for people that haven’t played them yet. Still i feel disapointed that there is nothing new for me except two brothers that i’m not really exited about playing. Hopefully i’m more lucky on february.

  • As a Xbox 360 guy transferring to PS4 is time around and a brand new PS Vita, I have to say that these deals are jaw dropping to me. Bravo Sony

  • Are there any new game coming this January? @Kristine Steimer For the PS4 or is don’t starve the only game coming out this month? or is it just a PlayStation Plus Game For PlayStation plus member?

  • @Un0-0n3unique: Any new games coming this January will appear in the weekly Drop posts each Sunday. They took this week off since it was the holidays and nothing new was released anyway. I’d expect the drop to be back this Sunday, Jan 5th.

Don’t Starve is just the PS Plus game of the month for PS4.

And I’m sorry, but Kristine Steimer has left the building.

  • just gonna go ahead and say wtf is with all the ps3 love…..bioshock infinite is like 3billions time better than dont strave…..and u gave ps3 boarderlands 2 aswell…..why I cant have these games on my ps4 seeing as I put my money into that console to get it first and have to indure the crashes it has is just insane….is this **** on the ps4 owners year this year!?!? my mind is completely baffled to why you wouldn’t release the ps3 titles for both consoles instead of pwning off some low selling rubbish game to ps4 and give ps3 owners the good stuff!?!?!

  • PS3 list is looking great. Can’t wait to try out DmC and Brothers since I never played them. I have played a little bit of Bioshock Infinite on the 360 but never finished so it will be nice to get a chance to finish the game and see how it looks on ps3.

  • I have a ps4 and cannot watch the video preview .It says pluggin misssing weird that is asony video.

  • For the love of God, please give PlayStation 4 users a Poker game.

  • Soooo good!

  • sooooo.. sony releases a new system.. I buy new system and you release a bunch of amazing games on my old system.. so now I am just playing on my ps3 because you couldnt just make them playable on the ps4….sad

  • So…where are the wonderful killer apps you PS4 guys would like to get for free? And where exactly was it ever advertised as being backward compatible? Oh, it wasn’t?

This always happens with new consoles. Blah blah. Few truly new games you can’t play on the old system. Blah. Few games in general. Blah blah blah. Relatively small revenue generated by games that have now existed in the marketplace for a grand total of 6 weeks. Blah blibbity blah.

Would be nice if they would release poker games and such for those who don’t care about Don’t Starve, but I suspect that would pacify very few. Sony doesn’t make all the decisions regarding what games are given away on the IGC, or what games are released on PS3 vs. PS4 (or at all).

They did make the decision not to make the PS4 backward compatible. Wanna play PS3 games? Gotta buy a PS3. At least until Gaikai hits the PS4, and we still don’t have much info on what that will look like.

Don’t shoot the messenger, guys. This is how it is.

  • whoa i just wanna buy the bioshock but now is free, that amazing, whit this offers everyone want to be plus

  • Really enjoyed the January Previews video. I’d love to see a new one every month. It’s a great way to digest all the new info on upcoming PS Plus games. And if you haven’t already done it, you guys should get in the habit of posting these monthly Previews videos under the “What’s New” section of the PS4’s new interface, along with the PS Store ads and status updates.

  • Are PS4 users able to have access to PSONE classic on the playstation store like Spyro 1-3 like its available on playstation 3 in this janauary preview ?

  • Would love to see Ragnarok Odyssey, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 2, Persona 1, Persona 3, or some other amazing RPG on this list!

  • When will we see more PS4 PS Plus love?

  • finally we’ll be able to try DmC.

    thank you Sony!!

  • Thanks for an awesome update. PS+ is the best premium gaming subscription based program ever. The January update rocks. You struck a great variety of high quality titles. I would suggest, however, that Vita owners receive more native Vita titles. I purchased the Vita because of its gorgeous OLED screen. PSP titles (480×272) don’t do it justice if upscaled to Vita’s native resolution.

    @Kristine
Please, pretty please keep the videos coming in future plus update posts. Thanks in advance =)

  • This month looks great. I wish they would give us U.S. guys Far Cry 3 like they did the Europe guys but Im excited either way. Can’t wait to play DMC.

  • I got a PS4 and PS3 and so far I have not bought any games for the PS4 as I don’t feel like wasting money on rubbish. That being said I think the free games hat come out on the PS4 are good, and yes Don’t Starve is not a block buster game, but is everyone forgetting what PS+ started out with on the PS3?

The PS3 is getting some good games now, because its a old system and the industry is established. I cant understand why people got to whine about not getting brand new AAA games for free on the PS4, a brand new system, its like a line of dumb people are lining up to spit out the same dumb crap over and over with little to no thought about anything aside from there greed put into what they are saying.

  • Wonder what’s on 2014, PS+ line up free games, current Gen still awesome :D

  • this is awesome… but an exact time and date of when they drop on the playstation store would be nice so i could maximize my playing time ;)

  • Just tried the demo for Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. Meh…I didn’t get it. Guess I’ll still download it for free, though.

  • Does anyone know if this applies to the UK as well? Because I went onto the PS store this morning and ‘Brothers: A tale of two sons’ is still £3.56 and will be until 22-1-14. WTF?!

  • Bioshock: Infinite AND Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons??!! It seems like Sony read my mind because these are 2 of my most wanted games!!

  • Im Brand new to PlayStation plus and play-station 3. Just bought both on the 24th when my Xbox kicked the bucket. Just wondering when the tittles switch. I thought maybe the 1st but i guess im wrong they weren’t there today. Getting used to the new controls is the hard part. But free games is epic, better than the free ones Xbox was offering i must say, hands down =p

  • Don’t have many games since i just got the system so wondering when games change for the month, bioshock be fun to play again.

  • I own a PS3 AND a PS4, I been hoping to see more content, or at least content that’s on par with the PS3? why is there such an extreme lack of releases for the PS4? 3 Playstation Plus releases for the PS3, but the PS4 gets 1?!! It’s disappointing, and makes me almost regret purchasing it in November.

  • First time comment. Just bought the BioShock 1 & 2 pack so can’t wait to try infinite.
Would like to see MGs rising revengence in igc as they got it in EU.

  • @TokyoKazama: Doesn’t apply to UK. EU has its own Plus with corresponding IGC and discounts.

    blog(dot)eu(dot)playstation(dot)com/

…unless you’d rather *acquire* a NA Plus account. Happy hunting.

@Ulorla: Games don’t generally change all at once, but rather one game per week is added with one taken away. Find out which games will be changed in each Monday’s PS Plus blog post, and for the actual change to occur sometime on Tuesday. Most Tuesdays will also have a PS Store Update blog post, which will list any new content being added to the store. Games, add-ons, demos, avatars, themes, etc.

@Sabpuppy: If you honestly bought a PS4 with the IGC in mind, that’s just sad. There never was much on the PS4’s release calendar for 2013. Even less to pick from then for the IGC. But cheer up. Very soon you’ll have so many games to choose from on your PS4 that you’ll forget all about your PS3. Better graphics and all. Way it goes.

  • I just want to say thank you for giving us all these great games this month. I am especially excited for DmC: Devil May Cry because that is a game I refuse to actually buy (because, you know, its not the way I want to see my favorite franchise go) but want to at least try out; Playstation Plus just got me that chance.

I’ll be downloading Bioshock Infinite once I’ve beaten Bioshock 2, which we got from a previous update ;)

  • Incredible line up guys can’t wait to play some bioshock infinite

  • Sorry dumb question but will the digital download for the PS3 games work on the PS4 since it’s not disc based? On the fence about getting the PS4. Frankly the PS3 line up pushes me away from the PS4. Seems the PS4 selection is sub par.

  • @sambajam: Nah, that won’t work. PS4 isn’t capable of playing PS3 games right now. Disc-based or digital. :/

  • I’m a PS4 and Vita owner, and I’m loving PS+!! Great titles,(Contrast,Resogun) and very excited for Dont Starve! Thanks for the selections, keep em coming!

  • Why am I only getting an option for bioshock as a timed trial and DMC says $40 even though I’m a psplus member?

  • @DaGreatCornholio: Because this post is only a preview of what’s to come in January. Yes, it’s January now. But the games are released one (maybe 2 depending on the number of Tuesdays in a month) per week. Announced on Mondays, available to download for free on Tuesdays. Time of day varies.

  • Ok all these games are awesome. but like when is the games being released on the PSN Store? I really want to try out Don’t Starve I seen it play on PC by other Gamers on YouTube and it seems amazing. I also really would love to try out Bioshock Infinite and Devil May Cry and Brotherly Tale of Two Son, I got the membership but when is the games being avaible for PS plus memebers and sorry for bad grammer but my keyboard sucks. for free.
