PS3 System Software Update (v4.30)

Next Tuesday, October 23rd, we will be releasing a new system software update for PlayStation 3 (version 4.30). With this update we have made several changes to how Trophies are displayed on your PlayStation 3. The Trophy Collection will now reside under PlayStation Network on the XMB. Trophies that you have earned playing PlayStation Vita games are now displayed on your PlayStation 3. You will also be able to see your Trophy level and progress towards the next level while viewing your trophy collection.

PS Vita Trophies on PS3

By the beginning of November 2012, we will retire the services available through the Life with PlayStation application. In conjunction with its retirement, we will stop offering the Life with PlayStation application to new users with the 4.30 update. This includes the conclusion of our participation with Stanford University’s Folding@home, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding and studying the causes of a variety of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s as well as various cancers.

We’d like to thank the more than 15 million users that have participated in the program since it started on PS3 in 2007. PS3 users have donated in total more than 100 million computation hours to the Folding@home project to date, and as a result, contributing greatly to Stanford University’s Alzheimer ’s disease research. Considering the contribution PS3 has made to the project, we decided to retire it as a result of discussions with Stanford University.
Vijay Pande, Folding@home research lead at Stanford University, had this to say about your contributions:

“The PS3 system was a game changer for Folding@home, as it opened the door for new methods and new processors, eventually also leading to the use of GPUs. We have had numerous successes in recent years. Specifically, in a paper just published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, we report on tests of predictions from earlier Folding@home simulations, and how these predictions have led to a new strategy to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The next steps, now underway at Stanford, are to take this lead compound and help push it towards a viable drug. It’s too early to report on our preliminary results there, but I’m very excited that the directions set out in this paper do appear to be bearing fruit in terms of a viable drug (not just a drug candidate).”

Please note, the games shown in the picture above are examples, and do not represent existing PS3 or PS Vita games.

  • Awesome news! I will finally be able to see my Vita platinums ^_^

  • Finally! Great Job SONY =D now we want to see when my Friends with Vita are online! ;D

  • its about time playstation lets you see your vita Trophies on ps3 i am really happy :D

  • Good Job!

  • Such a shame Folding@Home is going away.
Definitely need to somehow use that again. Kinda like #46 is saying

I would like to keep the Folding @ Home app, maybe as a separate download from Life with Playstation? I have two PS3′s, one for my office, and one for the family room. Since I only occasionally use the one in my office I leave it doing Folding at Home. I would like to keep folding at home in some fashion.
Another question, if we don’t do the update will Folding at Home still be available? Or will the clients just stop working”

Just don’t update and check if its still working.

If it remains folding, you can decide to buy a new PS3 slim for the online gaming, while you leave the folding PS3 in its current state. The only thing you can’t do is go into PSN store, or play online. What you could do is starting to fold with the PC instead of the PS3 if you want to keep giving support to Folding

  • Oh and mod/Sony:

nice that we will be able to see trophies from PSVita in the list, but will the PSVita users also show up on PS3’s friendlist? That is just as annoying as the missing trophies IMO

  • Thankyou so much for listening to us!

Collecting trophies is a part of the PlayStation experience and seeing the full collection on every system is essential. I love this update!

  • I agree with comment #15 & #20. Because I have many games on my trophies list that I earned no trophies in because I didn’t enjoy it. Please, in next update, delete games with 0% trophies from our trophies list.

    Thank you.

  • I agree with what many others have stated here. This update is mostly useless without a removal of the 0% trophies.

Or properly functioning remote play. AGAIN CAN DO THIS ON A HACKED PS3. Its pretty embarrassing when the modding community add more functionality than the manufacturer (though this is often the case). At this rate we won’t see the remote play envisioned (and used to bait early adopters) until the PS4.

  • Sony, please, I beg you, let me disable trophy notifications! That’s the one complaint I have, but it’s big, because they really ruin the mood sometimes – those big, grey boxes and the *ping* sound that comes with them. Getting to the end of a game, seeing the story come to a conclusion and contemplating what I just saw, nothing ruins the mood quicker than a notification and a cheery *ping*.

Fix that, and I’ll probably be around for the next generation as well. Just don’t wait until next gen to do it!

  • How about a way to totally disable trophies? I really do not care one bit about them as I do not need verification that I finished a chapter, killed a bad guy, walked a dog or many of the other massively unnecessary things trophies are given for.

Life was good when points were over and above in f@h but when they dropped the points so low that it made no sense in running the ps3 24/7 to gain that tiny bit, it just didnt make sense to me. Good bye Life. Only thing i used was the f@h anyway so I dont know if Life did more or not.

Speaking of getting rid of things – will we be able to remove Life and get rid of it on the XMB?

How about a way to get rid of Playstation@Home also and totally remove it from the ps3 and XMB? Every time I go there it is just a bunch of little kids thinking they are cool – kinda useless. Or at least make an adult only section for people over 40!

  • I’d disable trophies in their entirety if possible myself, but I don’t see Sony allowing that, and I can see why. If you want to get back into it and all the trophies you could have gotten never got registered, you might not bother. They’re there to be used, and it makes sense for Sony to encourage us to use them.

What bothers me is that right now they’re not just encouraging us, they’re forcing us. If it weren’t for those notifications, I could just ignore them.

Other than that, I agree with you. For me, beating a game is rewarding in and of itself. I don’t need a trophy to tell me I’m supposed to be happy about it. And I’m not interested in an artificial pissing contest of comparing trophies with others (though I can of course respect being into that if that’s your thing). For me, all I want is to press that X-button and launch the game, and from then on the game should be everything I see. Uninterrupted, without any silly notifications.

As for XMB, I don’t do much there except changing the settings and launching games, so to be honest I don’t really care much about that personally.

  • Life® is too complex to the core consumers it was meant for; people like me; people that just want to play games and have fun. Nice try tho:)

  • This is awesome even though I like seeing the trophies in the game section.

However this also disproves my theory about the dominance pecking order when it comes to the PSP, PS3 and Vita (Think about when linking via USB and you’ll see what I mean…)

  • Alphabetical order for games, for god’s sake!

  • In the next update, It would be nice if we could password lock each user account on the PS3. Just like on the Xbox 360. Which many of us share the ps3 with others in the household. For example, it prevents unauthorized access to a stubborn roomate.

  • Great update, but will there ever be an update that allows people to ‘nickname’ their friends? Like a small tag under their PSN ID

  • Sounds interesting, but I hope this isn’t the only thing your changing / adding. :) Fill up the update goodie bag! :D

  • I am displeased with the moving of the trophy list location. I liked it where it already is, since if I want to check my trophies while I’m playing a game, I just have to hit home and move up to spots. This sounds like it’s going to be much less convenient. Not a huge thing, but I would like to see this changed back in the future.

  • @111 While I think it’s a bit silly to be bothered by simple trophy notifications, I do think there should be a way to disable those notifications just because it’s such a simple concept that it should be there for those who do desire it. It’d also help for people running tournaments for various video games on the PS3, as the way it is, people tend to get trophy notifications in the middle of a match, which can be quite distracting.

  • Much applause to you sony much applause

  • No! Stupid Sony!! NO MORE UPDATES. How many times do I need to tell you nobody asked for or wanted this crap and we shouldn’t be forced to DL it. I’d allot you one or two a year and you’ve abused that. You destroyed the PSP by overupdating and now my Vita won’t go online because of updates either. Do you EVER learn from your mistakes?

  • Glad to finally see all trophies are going to be displayed on the PS3.

Sad to see Folding@Home going; been a contributor since day one in 2007.

  • Now please bring back the new playstation network store interface & please release an properly functional consolized web browser for playstation 3 that does not crash & or freeze & without plugin compatibility issues with the ability to upgrade the necessary plugins as needed?

    Thank you!

  • Finally. On ps3 you can see who is playing on vita?

  • YES! THANK FOR MAKING VITA TROPHIES VISIBLE ON THE PS3! That had me agitated for minute not being able to see them on the PS3. I’m going to miss Life with Playstation, too. That was my favorite “visualizer” while playing my music. I love looking at recent snapshots of landmarks around world. (Sigh) R.I.P to Life with Playstation. I just hope in the near feature, we can get some more visualizers. It sucks only having 3. Or maybe throw some in the PS Store for downloads so that we can pick what we want. (Hey, another PS Blog Share idea)

S/N: I’m glad to see that Google+ is finally getting more active users. As a result, I see that the Playstation Blog site has over 2,000,000 +1 site recommendations from Google+ users (including me). So, congrats to that!

  • Lovin this update. Sad to see Life with PlayStation go though.

  • I guess this is all well and good but, how about updating the browser? I have computers that are over a decade old that have more internet functionality than my playstation. Flash 11 would be nice. HTML 5 would be nice. With all of the video capability of this thing, the browser is the weakest thing on there.

  • I’m going to wait and see how many PS3s this update bricks before I install it…

  • SCEA needs to realize that there are gamers who can live without trophies.

It’s OUR trophies. We should have the rights to do whatever we want with it whether we want to keep or delete them. Why does SCEA have to force all their consumers to keep them? Why not offer a better service instead of following in the same footsteps as Microsoft?

  • Something that I found very strange, testing with a friend who is now with Vita hands …

In the friends list, who’s on the PS3 does not see who is online on Vita, but neither appears offline normal. It is on the list of friends, without warning how long does not access the PSN
Can you talk for normal message! when will it solve?

  • Thanks a lot for this, finally vita trophies on ps3 and thanks for taking away life with playstation lol im sure nobody really used it, now just give us the new playstation store and vita panels on ps3 and were fine …. oh yeah and more ps2 classics :P and put ps2 classics on the vita as well (we know its capable of that and more lol)

  • I agree with everyone wanting to be able to delete unwanted items on the trophy list. I ended up created a second PSN account because my first list was so cluttered with trophy lists from rented or borrowed games I wanted to try.

@109 – I see no reason why they cant add a “disable notifications” option on the PS3, after all the Vita does have that option, as mine is turned on.

  • yeah Sony since you “listen” to the consumers/customers.. give us an option to delete 0% trophies from our lists… I would love to get rid of free realms off my list

  • Weak Update

  • Maybe this has been mentioned already, but to all that are sad to see Folding@Home going away because you can’t contribute anymore, it is still possible to contribute using a PC :) I don’t know if its allowed to link directly here, but just search on Google for “Folding at home” and you will find a link to Stanford University’s website. Here you can download the Folding@Home client for PC.

  • I hope that the comparison of trophies was fixed it was very slow. Also the in game trophy comparison was horrible it would take forever. Also it would be nice if we don’t see any more spinning circles when clicking on our trophy collection it was kinda annoying to wait for all of the trophy images to load up.

  • “Next tuesday” … I believe you mean “this tuesday”. That’s how we talk in America. Thank you.

  • Dear SCEA,

Look at Nintendo! Do you see the nintendo fans abandoning Nintendo because they do not offer trophies/achievements? No!

I bet a lot of them already hate the trophy/achievement idea before they have even experienced it. If Xbox prevents them from removing their achievements but Playstation lets them be able to, which console do you think they’ll end up buying then when they are suddenly interested to own a second console for hardcore games?

  • im going to miss this its was fun with on my ps3!
cant wait for this update! im getting my vita this holiday! cant wait ps+ forever!
    ps+ forever!

  • This is sad news.
I loved Folding@Home. I would rather wait for my Vita trophies on PS3 than get rid of Life With PlayStation. :(

Didn’t update yet, running @Home one last time.

    RIP

  • All we need now is the ability to delete trophies (Especially those games at 0%!).

  • Sad about the Life with Playstation thing. I leave my PS3 folding any time during the day that I’m not playing. I’m glad it allowed for some advances in research, but it is rather alarming that most comments are “more Vita trophies!” and not about an application that actually mattered being discontinued.

  • Cool! Now add the feature that allows you to total control your PS3 XMB with your vita. While im browsing the web or using apps on my Vita, it should be possible to control song tracks or movies that are playing on your ps3 through your Vita.

  • So Sony approves of Cancer?

Seriously, why are you removing support for folding@home. At least join Seti or something, it one of the few reasons I decided early on in this generation to make the PS3 the main platform. I could fold during gaming sessions and feel better about the world.

Trophies. I’m with the can you make a patch to make them optional. I would like to disable the Trophy feature completely. This mandatory upgrade which takes away my ability to purchase items in the store, is over trophies. Wow.

Lastly. Deciding to do this on a Tuesday is a really bad decision. The same day you update your store, the updates would make better on Thursdays when everybody has bought new releases on Tuesday and there are still a few working days left in case there are crippling bugs in the firmware.

  • WOW! THIS is what SONY is worried about now days?! Yet another nail in the coffin of the PS3! Just give us playstation supporters(me since the PS1!) a system that can match XBOX and their LIVE network!!!!! Oh and quit taking things away from us too(2 systems now instead of 4!) Terrible treatment of your supporters!

  • @94 – you bring up a good point.

  • When will we be able to view fellow PSVita user’s (Gaming/Movies/Apps) online activity? I think this feature would be a boom to the (PSN/Sony) Ecosystem Strategy.
