As we continue the journey to March 12, 2013, we want to further explore all aspects of the God of War universe, giving you deeper insight into the creation, lore, design, and gameplay of God of War: Ascension. Welcome to our third Monsters of Ascension feature.

God of War: Ascension: Goat Captain

The Satyr Captain in God of War: Ascension continues the evolution of the “Satyr,” an enemy that has featured in every God of War game from the beginning. This time, however, these grunts are getting a “pack master” in the form of the vicious Satyr Captain. In today’s post, our famed concept artist Izzy continues his dissection of the Monsters of Ascension. Let’s roll!

The God of War Satyrs are traditionally pretty formidable alone and even more so in groups. Now with the addition of the Goat Captain, they add rank and structure to their arsenal. Those are some pretty stacked odds that Kratos is up against. What sparked the idea to give them a commanding officer?

Izzy, concept artist, God of War: Ascension: I think there was a pretty great response to the commander classes we had in God of War III, specifically things like the Centaur. The main idea was to vary up the more difficult battles with these guys by changing the behaviour of the base grunts and alter their collective tactics. In keeping with this design philosophy we wanted to have a high level ‘commander’ grunt that we could spawn in lots of places, unlike the Centaur, which needed a lot of room to be effective. They are the mini-mini-boss…

God of War: Ascension: Goat Captain

Run us through the creation process of this character from beginning to end. What were some of the key points that you really wanted to nail down while making the Goat Captain?

Izzy: This guy had to clearly be the boss. I wanted to do something that would push his proportions beyond the rest of the Satyrs. Since we had already built an aesthetic of the more monstrous animal version of the Satyrs rather than the more human face with goat leg ones of the past, I thought he should be pushed into an even more feral direction. I experimented with longer limbs, and I think we settled eventually on the designs that gave him an almost slouched position with a long goat-like neck. This made the armor built around his shoulders feel denser, and gave him a strong tank-like appearance.

In the single-player demo that was shown at E3, we see the Goat Captain fiercely give the order of attack to his troops as he observes the fray from above. At one point he joins in the skirmish, almost as if heíd had enough watching Kratos make short work of his soldiers. When designing the Goat Captain, did you have that kind of “evil genius” persona envisioned for him from the start?

Izzy: As Iíve mentioned before, I find malevolent intelligence way more potentially scary compared to a more feral savage evil. For the Captain he needed to clearly be in command, so we showed this with his stronger, herculean-like armor, as well as those huge flat lightning bolt shaped horns.

He was always meant to be a commander or overseer of the action that would jump in to make short work of his enemies after they had been tenderized a bit by his cronies. When he gets in there though, he doesn’t mess around. His nasty falchion style sword does plenty of damage, when he’s not above calling in the troops, and brutalizing his enemies against the wall.

    I wonder how amazing God of War 4 on the PS4 will be…Ahh…I can only dream!

  • Are there going to be other weapons like Blade of Artemis/Arms of Sparta or just “borrowed” ones from enemies?

  • I’m a huge god of war fan. Maybe not to the extent of shaving my head, bleaching my skin and getting a rather non discrete red tattoo, but still a big fan. I honestly feel this game is over kill and a tad disappointing that this project was not held off in favor of a new SMS project. Don’t get me wrong the Multiplayer sounds interesting, but a lot of MP sounds interesting these days and I can’t make time for it all. So i tend to lean more towards the single player experience to help me decide where I’m going with my MP time. That’s where things seem to be going off into shamelessly exploiting an intellectual property. The story seems no bigger than that of Ghost of Sparta or Chains of Olympus. While both are good games, neither was largely necessary or added to much to Kratos’ tale.

    I just don’t feel the main campaign is offering the story and not offering the game play to really justify this games existence.

    But please NO ONLINE TROPHIES!
    I hate the way game developers of awesome single player games feel like they have to tack on multiplayer games all because of how successful Call of Duty became because of it. Thats the thing though, online multiplayer on FPS are good and addictive but on things like God Of War, Assassins Creed, Dead Space etc its just not the same and the servers are empty within 6 months because…..yes you guessed it….everybody is back the FPS servers again.

    I love God of War and Kratos, please dont make the single player portion smaller (which is what ive read) just for the (imo) rubbish looking multiplayer and please dont force us trophy hunters to play the multiplayer by sticking in online trophies?

    Go the Dead Space route, if you really have to include multiplayer fine, just leave the trophies all still single player.

  • The new artists on the team are really good!!

    @Aaron Kaufman: I wanted to mention an important off-topic thing about Kratos character design. The 3D model of Kratos in this game has the forearms too long!! You (you, me, and everybody else) did not notice that in GOW3 Kratos because he was more buffed, and that kind of dissimulates that. But now that Kratos is “thinner” it shows, and looks weird.

    I know that is comment, coming from a gamer and not a professional artist (I am a doctor who is studying to be plastic surgeon, so I know really well human proportions) is most probably going to dismissed, but really, at least tell the character modellers and artists to check what I mentioned, most probably they will realize what I am talking about.

    The MP character models look more “proportioned” because they are more buffed.

    I am saying this based on the E3 2012 demo, maybe that issue was already addressed, if yes can you post new pics of Kratos character :D

  • @3, so you’ve played the game? If not, you can’t judge it. Simple as that.

    The game is looking amazing, can’t wait till March 12! Got my collector’s edition already preordered!

  • @4: Yeah, I do not want online trophies

    @3: The new project is already in development, I have read somewhere that Stig is the one in charge. Maybe it is not ready no be shown or Maybe it is a PS4 launch title, kind of what the first Resistance was back then at 2006.

  • Thank God of War for Izzy! I want to see more for sure! Have the Collectors Edition Pre-orderd. Just wish I could play the demo before it comes out!

  • If you want people to buy a PSVita and more people to buy this game, release all games that can be played on PS3 and PSVita on PS3 and PSVita with Cross Buy, and you have a guaranteed million of million purchases. Or at least do it for all firsty party games, but if you get third party games as well, it will obviously be even more success, more people that buy PSVita and all games.

    I would buy a PSVita right now and so much more people would buy this game and every game as well.

  • @10: Yeah I think that Every PS3 game should be bundled with a code for PSN VITA version of the game. Porting from PS3 to VITA is quite easy or so it seems, considering that Lost Planet 2, Yakuza and MGS4 were demonstrated running on the VITA, I think Sony should add to the SDK new software for VITA porting so developers can do that on the fly.

    If people buy the PS3 version they get the VITA version for free, just like they are doing with PSASBR, and many other first party games; but if people only have a VITA, or just want to buy the PSVITA version of the game, considering it is cheaper; they would also need to buy the PS3 version of the game if they want to play it on the PS3.

  • Does anybody know if they devs said anything about God of War Ascension being in 3D? I loved playing Origins in 3D, I’m dying to know if GoW4 will support it!!! :D

  • God of War enemies; mini bosses; and bosses are always so interesting to look at. It’s nice to know God of War Ascension won’t be any different.
