Final Fantasy XIV PS3 Update – Interview, New Details

When it was first launched back in 2010, Final Fantasy XIV for PC was criticized by players and the media, and eventually the planned PS3 version was postponed. Since then, Square Enix decided to reshuffle the leading developers of the game, with Naoki Yoshida now acting as Director and Producer. His challenge is to helm the 2.0 version of Final Fantasy XIV, which is a re-imagination of the original release. It will mark a new beginning for the game when (update: the beta) gets launched this winter, coinciding with the release of the anticipated PS3 version.

The game was not ready to be demoed publicly at E3 this year, but we got a chance to see a brief live demo behind closed doors of the game still running on a PC. It featured lush visuals, with a richly detailed character running through a forest area with dense vegetation and impressive lighting effects passing through foliage. It was something we definitely aren’t used to see in an MMORPG. “Right now it’s optimized for PC. We’re about 50% into the development of the PS3 version, but it’s pretty much how it’s going to look on the console as well,” explains Yoshida. “It uses the same new graphics engine we built just for this game. This summer we’ll have an opportunity to show the PS3 version.”

In the meantime, he briefed us on what to expect from the new version of the game. “We believe that Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 can be considered the next real Final Fantasy game in the series,” he adds. This re-release is based on three pillars that have also been the aspects the series is known for: high quality gameplay, great storyline and beautiful graphics. “And on top of that, there´s our MMORPG community, which will consist of both PC players and also the PS3 players all over the world.” Which means the game will be cross-platform, like FFXI before it on PS2 and PC.

Yoshida-san is quick to emphasize how the legacy is going to be a driving force for this episode: “We’ll have some Final Fantasy staples as well, like chocobos, moogles and summons. But what is a little bit different is that these summons are like demigods in this world, so they´re really powerful, and it’ll take cooperation of all the players to fight these battles.”

Of course, bringing an MMORPG to a console system means tackling some big challenges. “It is a thing that didn’t have been done a lot in the past, and we have to make sure that we design an user interface and control scheme specially for these players”, explains Yoshida. “And we’ll also be adding in-game tutorials and quests that will help players that might not be comfortable with MMOs, and when they play the game, they will feel like they’re playing a console game that just happens to be online.”

Things are looking promising for the second coming of Final Fantasy XIV, and PlayStation fans will finally have the chance to explore the lush visuals of Eorzea in this deeply-revised version of the title. Below, Yoshida-san goes deeper in some details of his project. And we can’t wait to gather some friends and ride some chocobos around those wonderful vistas.

PlayStation.Blog: Besides the new control scheme and new user interface, does the PS3 version have any new exclusive features compared to the PC version?
Naoki Yoshida, Producer and Director: Because PS3 players and PC players will all be on the same servers, we can’t give either group something special, because everyone is playing together.

But we know that a lot of players have a PS3 and PCs as well, and depending on the mood, sometimes you want to sit down and play in front of your screen, whereas in other times you want to sit back on your couch, relax with controller in hand and play. We believe that we offer opportunities for players to enjoy both worlds.

PSB: Final Fantasy has a rich universe, evolving its mythos and its narrative from episode to episode. How do you translate this into a massive open world, into an MMO form, where players can dictate the story?
Yoshida-san: It is an open world in the sense that you can explore freely, but in this open world you have this very detailed story, which has a beginning and an ending. What is good is that, once that story ends, we can add new tales. That’s one of the greatest thing about an MMO: you expand a certain story or add new storylines via patches.

PSB: We know some friends that still plays Final Fantasy XI today, 10 years after it was first launched. Do you have a roadmap to keep supporting FFXIV long after its launch?
Yoshida-san: Yes, definitely.

PSB: Are you incorporating easter eggs for fans of the series?
Yoshida-san: Yes, we’re definitely planning on lots of references to past Final Fantasies. This is a game we believe is for the fans of the series, so we want to bring back a lot of nostalgic monsters and other things. For example, we’re planning the Crystal Tower, which is the last dungeon of Final Fantasy III. Basically we’re taking all the great things from the the first 13 episodes, squeezing it into the game and giving them some polish. For example, in FFIII you were limited by the technology of the time, and we’re going to re-render that using high quality graphics. So you’ll have the opportunity to re-visit these sections and see the difference between the lower quality graphics from the past and the high resolution visuals of FFXIV.

PSB: Being players of Final Fantasy XI as well, we know the game was really party-based, and that was a problem with some audiences. Can you also play solo on in Final Fantasy XIV?
Yoshida-san: Definitely, you’ll be able to play the content solo too – it won’t be as party-based as Final Fantasy XI. But, on the other hand, we believe that in this current generation there are a lot of people with time constraints, and it’s hard for them to spend time finding a party. So we’re going to make sure that, for party-based contents, we make it easier to recruit a party. With the Content Finder tool, you’re going to be able to decide “Okay, I want to do this today”, then simply press the button and you’ll be joined by other people with similar goals. So you’ll be able to decide if you’re making a party and, if you don’t have the time, just press the button on Content Finder and you’re automatically in a party.

PSB: With the game finally launching on PS3 soon, how are you planning to attract those potential new players? You know, the console audience is very different from the traditional PC gamer.
Yoshida: We know that a lot of console players never played an MMO and they may be scared by not knowing what to do, and we want to stress that it’s very similar to an offline Final Fantasy that always had great stories, made you cry, changed your life. There will be a beta for a limited time where people will be able to try it out. And an additional factor to bring in console games are graphics: something of this quality you can’t have in any MMO title.

PSB: Will there be a public beta for 2.0?
Yoshida-san: Yes.

  • I simply can’t wait for this! This will definitely be something I’ll have!

  • @47 2.0 will came as update for PC players they don’t have to repurchase the game again all that will happen sub fee will be charged at full price

  • I’ve been looking forward to this for a very long time. Hopefully people won’t judge the game by it’s 1.xx release. 2.0 looks like a much better game and most who play now know it has improved a great deal.

I played FFXI on PS2 and hopefully I can get the same amazing experience on PS3 in FFXIV.

  • Get it right the first time with this version and I’m on board.

  • I really wanan play butthe only way ill be able to paly is if pc and ps3 player can play togther so my wife can play with me D; i hope it like 11 was that be golden

  • The graphics are amazing! But those images are probably from the pc version. I hope the ps3 version will look good too. Im not buying a pc just for a game.

  • I though this is already a goner (>_<)

  • this is probably a dumb question but will we have to pay to play

  • The game should be F2P for us PS+ users.

  • hey! i saw FFIII coming to PSP finally… but… Y NO VITA? and … Y NO N.A!!!!? only for japan!? SUCKS! i wont buy a DS/3DS to play it! bring it over here for the Vita and ill buy it.

  • Trust me when i say this it wont be free to play .If play ff 11 was not free to play this wont be either, DO you know how big this franchise is.. it would be suicided to the gamers to make it free to play .. I rather pay to play like ff11, dont ruin a good thing , it had little to no issues. They can lower the cost of the game or add perks to abundle pakge to jusitify the cost

Theres a keyboard pad for a ps3 controller.. Alot of folks use it for ps3 home.. they can bundle that, 30 day free sub and voucher for another 60$ for 1 yrs of play sub. If i rememberr correct the last game sold for 100$ last go around.. It came with a hdd so i think a 100$ could be the bundle cost and stand alone should be around 60.$

But please dont go above 50-60$ for 1 yr sub. life time sub 120-150$

  • @55 they said siad yes pc and ps3 gamers wilbe player together , he has confirmed in the post above.

  • Games looks quite different from when I was playing in January this year.

  • Final Fantasy straight up creeps me right out these days. It’s all goofy pop star heroes and animal ears. It’s like if furries and American Idol IN SPACE! got together and made a game with an enormous budget.

    Count me out. Again.

  • As it says right up there in the article > It will mark a new beginning for the game when it gets launched this winter, coinciding with the release of the anticipated PS3 version.< so looks like it's going to be THIS winter, I go with the sources of the people who make the game not some random commenter but that just me

  • so much mmorpg i know ps3 will get first i know about blade and soul online they said it coming out for ps3 but i don,t know how long it will take

  • make it 5 a month ^^ or ps + play for free

  • Whoa, an MMORPG for the PS3? This looks awesome!

  • It looks beautiful. I certainly hope it’s as improved over the original version as it sounds – I’ve heard NOTHING GOOD about the game PC players have been playing for the past year +.

If I may suggest a feature; how about some Vita compatibility? Ever since I’ve seen Wii U’s tablet controller, I said “there’s going to be MMOs on that thing. Sega will probably announce Phantasy Star Online 2 for Wii U, and it’ll put the hotbar and a virtual keyboard on the tablet screen”. Of course, that never happened, but I’m waiting for someone to do something like that. Add vita connectivity to this PS3 SKU of Final Fantasy XIV, so you can use the touchscreen to access hotbar functions and whatnot – it’ll be great!

We need more MMOs (and F2P) games on the Playstation Network.

  • must be free… consider we are buying the bluray

  • Screenshots are definitely PC no way the shadows will look that nice on the ps3 with that game engine. I bet it will still be beautiful on PS3 though. I played the PC version for a few months and loved it and I will definitely get this on the PS3.

  • To all the people who want to play MMOs for free on PS3 if they have PlayStation plus…. you are paying Sony for Playstation plus not Square-Enix. Meaning if it was free Sony would be footing your monthly subscription cost of most like $13.99 + an extra $2.99 i believe it was for every additional character slot.

They would be paying minimum $168/year for you to be playing it for free. Considering you only pay them $50/year good luck with that one.

And seriously doesn’t Playstation plus give you enough as it is… greedy people! You already get way more than an Xbox Live member who only gets online play for their $50… that’s the part we get for free!

  • As someone that plays FFXIV since release and has experience how much it has changed, let me share a few things.

For the few that asked: These images are for PC version, and Yoshi-P already stated that PS3 will look slightly “worse” than PC. However, even these images are not from a finalized version, and he also said there’s still a lot of optmizing to do. In other words, expect the final release to look even better than these pics, on both PC and PS3, but also expect PC to look better

The game is pay 2 play, and do not expect that to change. Devs already commented a lot about that topic, and it really looks that their definite stance is to keep it P2P.

There’s a lot of information about 2.0 in here: lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/jump?name=mainmenu&id=teaser

PS3 version will likely launch early 2013. January / February. There will be an (obviously free) open beta for PS3. PC Beta is somewhere around October.

Servers are gonna be crossplay. PS3 and PC players will play together in all servers, no info about console or PC only servers.

  • 36.) They have already removed most of the core issues you’ve mentioned, and other players mentioned. There is no fatigue system, there is no rank system.. there are classic FF jobs like Dragoon, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, Bard, Warrior. Control schemes are actually fun and responsive.. some of the other issues will be resolved by simply transistioning to Version 2.0. Servers are being remake to be more responsive, low latency. The UI is obviously getting overhauled, the world design is being overhauled and zones will look more unique.

Right now on PC, the game feels fun and refreshing.. the way it should have been and I imagine it’s only going to get better.

  • Will our beta codes that came with FFXIII still work with this beta??
    I really hope so…

  • Man I have been waiting forever for this game! Signed up for the beta ages ago. Still very excited for this!!

  • 72
haha lol man it`s 6.99 plus 3.00g per character slot you double the cost I hope because you don`t know,, And I forgive you :)

  • Sony could make deak with SE without any trouble with one thing we would just opay for slots every month or so

  • Glad to see that they changed up there approach to this game, and found a solution. This is top-notch game glad to see it didn’t fall by the wayside.

  • I came back to the PC version for the Welcome Back campaign and played for free for a week.
The game had improved gameplay wise. Had a little fun with solo content, but couldn’t get a party for anything since I was in my early teens. The Story quests in Uldah(definitely misspelled) are boring hope it picks up.
Hoping to get into the PS3 FFXIV 2.0 beta. The game has a lot of potential.

  • Great, this game was supposed to be released back in 2010… Oh well, at least it’s getting released.
But seriously, what is Square Enix doing over there?? They release games years in the making or don’t release them ever…….

Where’s FF Versus XIII? FF XIII Type-0? FFX HD?
Type-0 was released on the PSP in Japan, told us is was coming to US, then it’s not, it’s coming to Vita, haven’t heard anything for the last 6 month, haven’t heard about Versus in the last 5 years.
FFX HD remastered, not a word, just ‘in the making’.

Just give us details about the game, they’ve talked about Type-1 and a possible sequel.
It’s hard to get any kind of updates, even on FF fan sites.

They work on games for years, but other studios are perfectly capable of producing 1 game every 2 years. What the hell are they doing at Square Enix? Are they lost on drugs? Put your employees on Horse racing pills and make them work!
The only games we see are Eidos games that they bought.

If you want a an adapter for mouse and keyboard, use this one, it works for all games.

  • You haven’t played many F2P games recently have you Kars?

I think you are seriously confusing F2P with pay to WIN games, there have been a lot of games amazing free to play games recently, let’s not forget the many games that have CHANGED to F2P from P2P, DC Universe, City or Heroes, Lord of the Rings, Dungeon and Dragons, hell even blizzard is planning a free to play game.

Let’s not forget the buy game get f2p afterward games like guild wars. I have played Vindictus, Fallen Earth, Ether Saga, Dragon’s Nest, Perfect world, and many more, that are F2P or became free to play, spent hundreds of hours on them, and barely pay a cent, I think the TOTAL I have spent all together to play these games as much as I want was MAYBE 50 bucks, IF that, 10 bucks here, and ten bucks there, whenever “I” wanted to, whenever “I” had the money, and the only real reason was for increased bank space.

That’s it, everything in the game is available, and you can complete the whole game without paying a cent, I don’t know what games you been playing, but I have yet to come across one with only 1 character slot, there was DCuniverse, but hell, buy and expansion for 10 bucks, an you get 6 slots and tons of other items. Permanently.

  • I also find it funny people talking about having to pay for server cost… so whose paying for all those F2P servers huh?…

  • Don’t get me wrong, I love Square Enix.
But they have poor management of their staff. They aren’t synchronized or disciplined, You need better leadership and control over the business.

They make awesome games and I bought every final fantasy there is on PS (except for FF9 and FF4, they’re not good at all) but I bought every other spin-offs of ffvii, dissidias and even ffxiii-2.

And Japanese game makers wait for the TGS to announce their games, every bit of information we can get here is pretty slim. We’d love to hear more from you guys.

Besides FFXIII-2, there hasn’t been a lot of new final fantasy, and we are impatient to hear more.

    I’m really interested in Type-0.

  • Looking forward =)
A bit concerned about using a joystick instead keyboard+mouse, would be nice using psvita as an option to have a easy way to reach the commands =))

  • The proposed costs for the game have changed since the 2010 PC launch. The latest month-to-month North America pricing for the PS3 launch (after the free trail period) is:

The “Entry” plan, which gives you 1 character / server, up to 8 characters max. for $12.99 / month.

The “Standard” plan, which gives you 8 characters / server, up to 40 characters max. for $14.99 / month.

There will be discounts for paying in larger 3 month and 6 months blocks, which are to be announced later.

  • oh this looks epic

  • can’t wait for the PS3 version of 2.0 never had a P.C good enough to run to play it hope i get to test the beta when it’s open

  • as long as it’s F2P and with micro transactions This game will be solid and I might get it, oh and there needs a disc version imo as I don’t like downloading games considering i’m still using my 60GB launch HDD because I have game saves that aren’t savable and i don’t want to spend money for a limited time PSN+ offer to save them.

I mean if I literally have no option at all I’ll have to do that but would prefer not to. :)

  • Coming from someone who is currently playing this game, it will be pay to play. Here’s a price breakdown of what you can be expecting to pay:

    http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/pl/campaign/campaign.html#legacy

  • This game looks Cool.
But unless it’s free to play, I’m not buying.

Buying the game is enough and I’d rather spend 25$ per month of micro-transaction in Dust 514 than paying an MRC (Monthly Recurring Charge) of 10$ or 15$.

    At least:
    1-If you’re not playing, you’re not paying.
2-You don’t loose all your progress if you stop paying.
3-with free to play and micro-transaction, you pay for progression (without being ‘Godly’ because you’re rich)

There would be a lot more players of Final Fantasy if you had a free to play model.

  • There would be a lot more players of Final Fantasy if you had a free to play model.
Would they all make transactions? Maybe, maybe not. But there would be a lot more players online and that would be great for the business bottom line. It would attract more new people to the franchise, they would buy sequels of other Final Fantasy. Overall, Square Enix would benefit from that business model.

Have I ever heard of Dust 514 or Evens Online before PlayStation E3? Never, but I’m really interested.
A lot of games I’m interested in but I simply don’t want to risk a 60$ for a game I’m not familiar with.
But this one is free, so who cares, let’s try it out!

I’ll try the beta of FF14 and Dust 514 And see how it goes.
Even if I don’t buy this FF14, I’ll still buy other Final Fantasy.

Btw, any word on FFXIII Versus (FFXV you may call it) and Type-0 for Vita? FFX HD?
    Please? :)
    Also, Agni’s looks cool.
    http://www.agnisphilosophy.com/en/index.html

  • Check out the new luminous engine.
    Agni’s looks awesome.
It’s not a cg video, it’s the game itself!
    http://www.agnisphilosophy.com/en/index.html

It’s very impressive. It’s even better than the Unreal Engine 4!

  • Just to clear up any confusion on who get’s first dibs on the beta, they announced that any PC player who has bought more then 3 months worth of subscription time, will be put in a “Legacy” system, those players will be put in priority for the Beta of 2.0. Cheers! And I hope to see you all in Eorzea soon!

  • Bout time been waiting forever….

  • Yes! I was just thinking about how great this is gonna be.

And you can be a male catperson now? Sold.

  • been waiting for ffxiv to hit the ps3 forever. i had ffxi on the ps2 had some good times there. im hoping with v 2.0 they add the other job classes really want to play as a dark knight again. if not still going to get it ill just roll warrior.
