Guacamelee for PS3 and PS Vita

Hello good-looking, internet-savvy PlayStation.Blog readers. Now that you’ve been buttered up a bit, DrinkBox Studios is excited to announce that our new Mexican-themed co-op-multiplayer dimension-swapping Metroid-vania beat-em-up platformer, titled Guacamelee!, will be released through the PlayStation Pub Fund program!

If you have never heard of Guacamelee! the best thing to do is to open your mind, relax, and watch the below trailer:

Guacamelee! PS3! PS Vita! Pub Fund! Chickens!

I know what you are probably thinking…“What is this ‘Pub Fund’? And what does this mean for ME?”

Well it simply means that you can expect Guacamelee! to exclusively launch on the PlayStation®Network for both the PlayStation®3 and the PlayStation®Vita. That’s a lot of ®’s! You can also expect the game to take advantage of the special features offered by each of the platforms (details of these to come later – stay tuned).

Set in a world inspired by Mexican culture, Guacamelee! features a down-on-his-luck agave farmer named Juan Aguacate, who sets out to save the world when El Presidente’s Daughter is kidnapped by an Evil Charro Skeleton. The story takes place in and around a small village in Mexico, and has the player travelling through “The World of the Living” and “The World of the Dead” on his quest to rescue the girl he loves.

We’ll be showing the game next week at E3 running on both the PS3 and the PS Vita. And for up-to-date development news, make sure to follow us on Twitter @DrinkboxStudios, and check out our blog here. • I loved the Blobs Attack: Tales from Space so I’ll be getting this as well >:)

  • Muy excelente!

  • Grandioso! waiting for more info..

  • Great!, the game looks really nice ( as did MBA), i just hope it’s longer than MBA, that was my only gripe with it, and i hope you guys figure out some awesome ways to make use of the vita’s abilities, will get this on my PS3/VITA for sure!

  • Very cool, lots of interesting concepts in the trailer.

It will be a vita purchase for me.

I wish DrinkBox much success with this title.

  • dlc for tales of a blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Turn to chicken! Im going to get this one for sure! “CHIPOTTLE!”
    love the metroid reference.

  • Definitely gonna check it out.

  • DrinkBox is awesome

  • OMG, this game looks amazing! Mutant Blobs Attack was one of my first purchases when I got my Vita and I loved it! Still need to go back and finish up About a Blob, though.
This is definitely a Day One purchase. Count me in agreement with those who would like a Bundle deal for this, if you can’t float the “Buy 1, Get Both” option. I’d be willing to drop $15-$18 to get both of them together, as this looks amazing to play on the go, but I also want it on my PS3 to play couch co-op.
ALSO, count me in for wanting to play as Tostada. Too many games give us big, surly gentlemen to play as. I want to play as the dainty, @$$-kicking chicka, plz kthx bye! :D
Can’t wait to see more of this at E3!

  • Sooooooo happy!!! My concern that this wouldn’t make it to PSN has been eased. MUY FELIZ!!! :)

  • Mutant Blobs Attack was definitely a lot of fun, but this looks to be even better! Can’t wait to check it out

  • Cmon! VITA is a new generation of handhelds! And the only reason that i presume i’ll play online as good as PS3! It should be included online co-op on vita!
If it doesn’t, we never buy this! then make it pls…

  • I loved the Mutant Blobs Attack.
    I love “Metroidvania” games.
    I love the stile.
And I even wanted to create my own game with the world-swaping )

So yeah, I will buy this without a second thought. Looks awesome!

But I really have to ask one thing: does this mean that there will be no DLC for Mutant Blobs Attack? I’m not complaining, just want to know if I should keep the game, or delete it (pretty serious question, since Vita deletes game-saves with the game).

  • Wanted to add to the praise for Mutant Blobs Attack, it’s the most pure fun I’ve had with my Vita (and I got Rayman and Uncharted!) Still can’t believe what good value it was.

I’ve been following Drinkbox since then, and was initially sad to see that Guacamelee hadn’t been confirmed as a Vita or PS3 game at the time, great to see it’s coming to the hardware though.

  • I hope I get a response to this.

Will you please reconsider putting in online multiplayer. I will gladly accept delays for online multiplayer. Without it, I’m afraid this isn’t a sure buy for me.

I have, literally, no one to play with locally. It just isn’t fair that such a cool part of the game would be unavailable to me because of the lack of foresight to include online.

Is it server costs that stop you guys from doing it? I don’t understand. I just understand that without online, I probably won’t buy this cool looking game.

    • A bunch of people are asking about this topic.

From the developer perspective, online multiplayer is a *VERY* expensive feature to add. A few of us here have worked on multiplayer support on games in the past, and we know it can literally take man-years of work, split across multiple people, to get multiplayer support in to a game.

We also looked at the public reaction to bigger games that have local-only co-op (e.g New Super Mario Bros. Wii) and found that most people were pretty happy with the way those games turned out.

We have a fixed budget for Guacamelee, and so we had to make a tough decision to either spend a large amount of money and resources on making the game have online multiplayer, or instead taking that money and putting it towards the single player experience.

Our focus now is to make a game that players will really enjoy the single player. The co-op aspect of it is an optional (fun!) bonus if you have happen to have a friend over.

  • This game looks awesome! Platformers are the best on portables so i’ll definitely be getting this for my Vita, I need something new as I got all the trophies on Blobs attack and Escape Plan. Which leads to me question, will this game have a platinum? I’m assuming no but just curious. Btw, love the Dos XX Guacamelee poster! Lol

  • I loved Mutant Blob Attack for the vita (never got around to the first in the series) I definitely saw Mutant Blobs:Attack from Space a great pick-up because it was such a good price(and well priced) I’ll still support DrinkBox and pick this up!

  • Looks pretty cool, as many others I’d love that it’s buy one / get both, or at least bundle both versions for a discounted price, also “Viva México cabrones” :)

  • Wow, that Chozo statue in there is pretty bold, guys.

Hope this game delivers, but holy crap, I cannot believe you guys did that.

  • @RedPriestRezo: Have you tried using Content Manager to copy the save file onto your PS3/PC? That way you can delete the game but keep the save file around in case you download it again for DLC playing purposes? Might be worth a shot.

  • Soundtrack seems perfectly matched. What song is that? I believe someone else asked if it was recorded specifically for the game.

    Please help!

  • Xx_D4rK-Sk3LL_Xx

Well i wont say a thing i’ll say Guacamelee.

  • Thanks for the response! Will definitely pick it up regardless, but those options would definitely be great to have!

  • Metroidvania?

    Here. Take my money!

  • lol at that Metroid reference (in the first small picture in the article). The game seems interesting, can’t wait to get more details!

  • Which of these two descriptions is closer to the feel of the game?
    1) you have static basic abilities/moves that do not change in strength but you gain more of the and more as you progress, while each ability helps you unlock new areas and deal with different types of secret walls/blocks

    2) your basic ability set constantly changes and grows stronger by leveling up and changing equipment, the game encourages exploration in order to find secret items that vastly enhance your stats and abilities.

the first is a description of the 2D Metroid style, the 2nd is a description of the 2D ARPG Castlevania style.

I want to know which of the types this game is closer to, though I’d love it either way!

keep up the good work! this looks incredibly promising!

  • The game looks amazing, but why not include Ad-Hoc, I’m pretty sure it’ll be a hit back at work!

  • Hi Graham, thanks for the announcement. I love Mexican culture and I love DrinkBox’s games. They’re charming and hilarious. Looking forward to Guacamelee (awesome name, btw).

  • Hi, I never get an answe from this kind of things but I’ll try it since I really love metroidvania style of games and the art is fantastic. I know that it costs to make it an online game but can you play local Co-op withe the vita? It would be great since my brother and I plan getting a Vita for each one and support this great game. Will there be also a versus mode? It would probably be difficult but I’ve been wanting a versus mode in this kind of games since forever. By the way, I’m mexican and I love your project, keep on with the amazing job and I hope you have some time to answer my doubts. Thanks!
