PS3: The First Console to Offer Amazon Instant Video

Hi again, PlayStation community. I’m here to bring some good news today: Amazon Instant Video is available now on PlayStation Network, making the PS3 the first and only video game console to offer the service! Head on over to the TV/Video Services category of the XMB, where you can download and install the new Amazon Instant Video app right now for free. Once you launch the app, you’ll have instant access to thousands of streaming and downloadable movies and TV shows for rental or purchase. There are more than 120,000 commercial-free movies and TV shows for rental or purchase, including new releases, classic favorites, major TV shows, full seasons and even new episodes of some of your favorite TV shows the day after they air. Many of the DVD and Blu-Ray titles on Amazon.com are also offered on Amazon Instant Video available through this new app.

If you’re an Amazon Prime member (I am!), you’ll also be able to watch as many of the more than 17,000 Prime Instant Videos as you can handle, at no additional cost. If you’re not yet an Amazon Prime member, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial right there within the app or just sign up—it’s $79 per year and totally worth it.

Our own Jeff Rubenstein got an early look at the app, and he can walk you through it here:

We’re really excited to bring you yet another option for entertainment and one that you can only find on PS3!

  • Next should be a UFC app!!!!

  • Wicked cool! Thinking of picking up Hulu Plus and Vudu too… time to do some research!

  • This is good news, but you really need to get HBO GO.

  • yes, I will finally get to use my Amazon prime account for something!

  • Yay! I’m glad this is on PS3. I can finally make use of my Instant Video service I got when I signed up for Amazon Prime.

  • @40 As soon as I logged out, then logged back in on the PS3, it was there. Got it all set up, checking things out now. It’s pretty awesome timing…my wife just signed up for Amazon Prime about an hour before this announcement. :)

  • That looks cool. I hope it comes to the UK soon to;)

  • Now all the PS3 needs is a Crunchyroll app, and I can get rid of my Roku.

  • When will PS3 get HBO GO because you can watch Game of Thrones on that as well.

  • Love it :)

  • I’m a Prime customer and I just registered my PS3, but apparently this doesn’t work for “International” users. I live in Jamaica, but use the US PSN store and Amazon Prime yet I can’t access the service. Will this ever work for users outside of the United States? and although I can’t access the free video service can I still pay for videos?

  • I doubt that this is available in Canada, but Robocop coffee mug shirt? I APPROVE!

  • Finally!

    Bravo, Sony & Amazon

  • Thanks for the video walkthru Jeff. I’ve had free trails of Prime twice and the worst thing about it is the interface, or really lack thereof. Even searching on their website completely sucks as they don’t even have an “alphabetize”. One thing they still need is a “queue”, but that’son them, not you.

  • So any news on the app coming to vita?

  • Would be nice if Sony was more open about what services were coming and if theyd address the HBO issue in some form

  • I’m so excited to use this app. As an Amazon Prime member I’m definitely excited to stream some of these shows and movies on my PS3.

  • Oh man I am VERY happy about this. I love my prime membership now I am use it on my PS3’s.

  • @RidleysBox You can watch Crunchyroll through the PS3 internet browser. Not the best, but it works. I was watching last season’s anime that way for a few weeks while my computer wasn’t working. Although an app would definitely be the ideal way to have Crunchyroll videos on the PS3 that’s for sure.

  • Buh, bye Netflix. Even if you don’t have Prime, Amazon offers up at least four newer releases each week for $1.99 (SD quality) and $2.99 (HD quality). I’m running the app now and everything looks good and streams as well as if not better than it does on my Roku. And HD content is in 5.1 Dolby Digital.

Thanks Sony and Amazon! My PS3 media experience finally feels complete.

  • yes this is great have so many amazon videos i want to watch. cant wait to try this!! thanks PlayStation and amazon

  • OH NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As an Amazon Prime person this is seriously freaking cool and totally out of nowhere! Thank you!!!!

  • Jeff, I love that Robo-cop T-shirt you have!

Also, once I fix my PS3, I’m so going to give this Amazon APP a try.

  • Great news. Sony may be a PITA when it comes to DRM, but they keep adding features to the PS3 and improving existing of the platform (except removing linux). This will be great to access Amazon Prime and rented content; great compliment to the VUDU service.

  • This is awesome….i hope they have newer movies than the 1902(year) movies on netflix.

As someone who doesnt pay for cable…this is just another service to get for exactly what im looking for. ….all for a 10th of cable cost.

  • I have looked everywhere on the amazon website for the price…maybe not everywhere because i would have found it.

It says its some free streaming with the 79 bucks a year prime member.

But what about the whole thing full access streaming….with out the prime????

  • This is indeed good news. I have a Prime account, and now I get to use it for something other than free shipping. I’ll take it! There is plenty of stuff on Amazon that is not available on Hulu (I’m through with Netflix). Now, if only you guys can set something up with Blockbuster and their streaming service. . .

  • Excellent news, thank you, I have been a prime member for a while, had recently renewed my account but never watched any of the offered movies because there wasn’t a way to watch it outside of the web browser.

Can we expect the amazon service to arrive to the ps vita as well?

I am very excited to hear this news.

    keep the great services coming.

Any chance that sony will have a crackle app? kind of odd that a sony owned service is on many competing devices but not on the ps3 or vita?

  • I think that Sony has a smart strategy because they want everybody to enjoy the video/tv services apps unlike the competition. That’s why I think they are holding back on the ESPN and HBOGo app, because not everybody can enjoy them. I mean really, to watchESPN on my IPad I am going to have to join one of the selected TV providers. In this day and age, I think that the services should be all universal.

  • can we get a freaking answer n the availability in canada or what.

  • Will this be available in Canada or are we not included again.

  • Just got Amazon Prime last holiday, after years of using them. Can’t wait to play Red vs Blue on the TV without hooking up my laptop. (That bit of irony is amazing.)

  • Prime is way more than a video streaming service. If you buy from Amazon a lot it’s great to invest in Prime. Also keep in mind, for those of you who buy your games on or around release day, Amazon sometimes gives out $20 credits with the purchase of their games. You can continue to stack those $20 credits and get discounts on future new games which may also have the $20 credit. Free release date delivery under prime, free streaming, free two day shipping, great customer support. I do a ton of shopping through Amazon and I got Prime for $39 since I’m a student.

If you’re also a student though you can get a free year of prime. The following years are $39 if you’re a student. I think you just need a .edu email address.

  • What is the video and audio quality versus Netflix and Vudu? 1080p? DTS-HD? What bitrates? Does it play 24fps content properly, unlike Netflix or Hulu or the PS Video store?

I still download videos from the PS Video store because the video and audio quality is slightly higher than streaming. With the availability of high quality streaming and iTunes supporting 1080p, I hope the PS Video store ups its audio and video quality for both SD and HD content.

Another vote for HBO Go *without requiring a cable/satellite subscription*. I cut the cord over 4 years ago and haven’t regretted it. I refuse to pay $500/year for mostly channels I don’t watch. Give me HBO, Comedy Central, PBS, and HDnet streaming content in HD and I’m good :)

  • Great to see Amazon Instant Video now available on the PS3! I was on the fence about dumping Netflix once and for all and I think this just may be the tipping point. With the inclusion of free two-day shipping with Prime, it really justifies the choice.
I do have one question, I have two PS3’s and I would like to know if I will be able to have both of them registered under the same account with Amazon and online at the same time (logged in under a sub-account of my primary PS3 profile)?

  • I guess it’s kinda cool, but …. watching movies takes up game time.

  • I have been enjoying the Amazon streaming on my Bravia HX901. If this works like that app than I’m sold.

While they don’t have the selection you get from Netflix, the service isn’t the same. Prime is for shipping 2-day, the books and movies are perks.

I can get most of the seasons of Top gear on Amazon same as Netflix. I think the Amazon video looks better on the tv.

  • This is cool. I am on the trial for Amazon Prime and was thinking about dumping it. Now, I might reconsider keeping it… And if PSN does get HBO GO or Max GO, then I am so there for that…

  • Excellent news, as a Prime Member I am pretty excited for this, great job guys!

  • Love that RoboCup shirt.

  • Love the app but it needs a little tweak could be a little faster when you go through the app, when you search it shouldn’t be on a separate page I like how Netflix shows your results on the same page tour looking at and why isn’t there a option to preview videos other than that it’s excellent

  • This is cool but can we PLEASE have a Pandora Radio app????

I already have the title of that blog post announcement:
PS3: The Last Device to Offer Pandora Radio

  • Streaming Top Gear now! love it!!! This is great, thanks Amazon & Sony!!

  • good work getting amazon. def will download this shortly. next on your list should be HBO Go!!

  • Easier way to find my videos on Amazon(takes longer on my Bravia), good to knw Sony & Amazon are in business.Oh im a Prime.

  • This is great news. I love Amazon Instant Video and the movies and TV shows that Prime members get to watch for free are getting better and better.

  • Another great app. So how about adding Crackle now; i know it is on Home but that is to much of a hassle. Also IT would be nice to have a dedicated youtube app as well. AND IF THERE IS ONE THING I COULD ASK FOR HOW ABOUT BRING PLAY TV TO THE US. I FOR ONE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE IT. THE PS3 IS MY MEDIA HUB AND I WOULD REALLY LIKE FOR IT TO TRULY DO EVERYTHING. ALSO GIVE THE PS3 SOME MORE CODEC OPTIONS.

  • Why do I have to be in the United States to purchase or rent any content from Amazon Istant Video?, Or better yet why Isn’t Puerto Rico or The Virgen Islands able to access any content that’s only available in the U.S., aren’t we U.S territories?

  • I am a prime member, how come prime videos aren’t showing up free?

  • Nevermind, I figured out they’re only free if you’re on a paid prime membership. I am on a six month free student prime trial.
