The PlayStation Recap – 4000 Posts and Counting Edition

81 28

The dog days of summer have begun, but it’s still been a solid week for PlayStation news. Killzone 3 celebrated the launch of the new From the Ashes Map Pack with a triple-XP weekend; PlayStation Move Ape Escape and Beyond Good & Evil HD announced PSN release dates; and the PlayStation.Blog officially hits 4,000 posts as of right now. We couldn’t have done it without you guys!

The quiet days of summer are usually a great time to catch up on games, so I’ve doing my part by shredding through Shadows of the Damned (a great ride, particularly if you liked Resident Evil 4’s shooting mechanics) and Outland. Next up: inFAMOUS 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum (my secret shame), and Assassin’s Creed II (my other secret shame).

What are you playing this weekend?

Most-Watched Video of the Week: Killzone 3: From the Ashes Trailer

The 10 Most-Viewed Posts of the Week

  • PlayStation Store Update — Alien Zombie Mega Death expands upon the hit mini for $7.99; Killzone 3 adds four new multiplayer maps for $4.99; Castlevania: Lords of Shadow continues with the Resurrection add-on for $9.99; L.A. Noire gets a new case with “Nicholson Electroplating”; Sonic Generations and Virtua Tennis 4 get free demos and more.
  • Coming to PlayStation Plus: UNCHARTED 3 Beta, Bomberman ULTRA and Special Offers — Mark your calenders! This coming Tuesday, June 28th sees the launch of the UNCHARTED 3 Multiplayer Beta for PlayStation Plus members! The following Tuesday, July 5th, will see the full release for all PSN members. Get the full skinny here.
  • Amy is Survival Horror Evolved, Coming to PSN This Summer — I’m a sucker for horror games, so the gameplay premise here grabbed me right away. As you guide Amy through decrepit environments teeming with monstrous foes, you’ll sneak past threats fight with clumsy, improvised weapons ala Silent Hill. But your young ward has a few surprises that might turn the tide in your favor.
  • inFAMOUS 2 Now Available on PSN as Full Game Download — A shocking (sorry) turn of events! Cole’s epic struggle against anti-mutant vigilantes is now available as a full game download from PSN. If you’ve got PlayStation Plus, you can play 60 minutes of the game for free.
  • Hitman: Absolution Developer Interview — Much like the new Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution is going to great lengths to expand its core premise in new and intriguing ways. One example is the introduction of social stealth, which sees Agent 47 bluffing and role-playing his way through nerve-wracking close encounters.
  • Introducing Dyad for PSN — I had the pleasure of meeting creator Shawn McGrath at this year’s PAX East. At that time, Shawn had rigged Dyad to a motorized platform chair that tilted and rocked as the player soared through the game’s swirling vortex of sights and sounds. Bonus points for name-dropping the Large Hadron Collider (LINK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider) in the trailer!
  • KZ3 Edge Challenge Open Next Week, $40K Up for Grabs — KZ3’s new multiplayer tournament will open for business on Monday, June 27th — and $40k in prizing is no laughing matter. Get full details on this online ladder here.
  • ModNation Monday: PS Vita, DLC Update and More — This especially monstrous ModNation update touches on the upcoming PS Vita game, best user creations, and a mountain of new track parts and mod options.
  • MotorStorm Apocalypse: Free “After Party” Update Hits PSN Today — The “After Party” update also includes a host of improvements to online performance and adds weekly racing events. Steering wheel support, a game mode editor, and “several more surprises” are said to be in the works for a future update, so stay tuned.
  • Shadows of the Damned: A New Vision of Hell Hits PS3 Today — Full disclosure: I’ve been playing Shadows of the Damned all week long and it’s a breath of fresh air. The survival-horror combat is similar to Resident Evil 4, though Garcia is much faster and nimbler than Leon Kennedy. I also adore the chilling soundscape produced by Akira Yamaoka (LINK: https://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/06/24/shadows-of-the-damned-sound-director-akira-yamaoka-talks-audio-influences/), whose audio work you remember from the Silent Hill games. Have you played it?
