Thank you for your patience and encouragement over the last few weeks. As covered in the post from earlier today, you can now update the firmware on your PS3 and change your password. Kazuo Hirai just announced that we have begun the phased restoration by region of some of the services, starting with online multiplayer functionality.
Please note that these services will take a bit of time to be turned on and rolled out to the whole country. The process has begun and some states are being turned on now, so please be patient as we reach your city and state. We’ll be updating the map below as service comes online in individual states. It will take several hours to restore PSN throughout the entire country, so please keep checking back for the latest updates. In the meantime, now’s a great time to get your PS3’s firmware updated, which is required to get online.
Notice: If your state is illuminated but your service has not yet been restored, please be patient – it can take a little while for the servers to populate fully.
Until we get the comments functioning correctly, we’re putting all comments on hold. I’m sure Jitender would appreciate not having people put words in his mouth ^_^
In the meantime, we’ll keep updating the map, and those of you already back online – enjoy some games!

Password Security:
One thing to be aware of. Your passwords were stored as a hash during the attack on PSN. This means that your actual password that you provide is NOT stored anywhere on PSN’s login server. Whenever you login to PSN the password you provide is converted to a hash and compared to the hash that is stored on the PSN server. If they match then you will be allowed to login, it not you won’t.
One thing about hashes is that they are not reversible and completely unique even if you change one letter. This means that even is someone has your hashed password they can’t login without providing an identical hash. However, providing a hashed password to login to PSN would fail considering that the hashed password would produce a completely different hash and login will fail. Hashes are also a very long combination of random letters and/or numbers where it is very unlikely if impossible to decipher without the actual password. So in a way changing your password only changes the hash stored on the PSN login server and then the data that the hackers might have would no longer work.

So far I have not heard anything from Sony confirming that credit card information has been obtained on account of these attacks. Also, all credit card information was encrypted which means that in order for the data to be readable it must be first decrypted.

It’s good to be able to get online now. I was getting so tired of the whole “console wars” rearing it’s ugly head again, on who’s system was better, who had the better online (and of course with PSN being down, Xbox users thought this was a prime time to use this as an example) yadda yadda yadda. Well….back to gaming business as usual.

Sony is it possible to rename are PSN-ID like for example i go the PSN store to buy ID-Name change for 1.00$ so. And it will only let you change your PSN-ID name once, i think alot of people would love that, ITs only for once and can’t change again.
Oh And when will the PS Store be back up? I wanted to rent movies from the PSN store but the store is down, so will it be back up soon?

And do the PSN cards come in 10$ too? I got 20$ right now and Sony is possible to make all store around the world sell them then walmart. Are walmart is super far, anyway i was thinking u should sell them online on your stores were u go to sony store.com and buy PSN Card from 10$, 20$, 50$ 100$ and you send the PSN card codes to the email. I think alot of people who can’t go to walmart who love it and it should work.
Why do this because i am not 110% safe using my real card info on the PSN no more. I use my card all the time but i am not sure i should used it on the psn no more.

I got kicked from a game and it told me that someone else logged on using my username. WTF does that mean and do i need to change my password again?
Yeah, it’s not even letting me log in on my PS3 and it took like 10 tries just to log on to it from my pc.

but im still happy that the networks on just psn store would make me so happy school ruins my day and makes it slower so it felt like forever…
