The Drop: Week of April 18th 2011 New Releases

Wrapping up our staggering week of PlayStation announcements and surprises, The Drop upper-cuts your PS3 into a sea of spikes (thanks to the help of Kratos), introduces it to an insane, malevolent computer A.I. and rendezvous with the US Navy SEALS with another exquisite launch of new releases.

Keep your trigger finger on the refresh button and visit the PlayStation.Blog this week, as Sid, Jeff and yours truly give you our hands-on impressions and host several developer video interviews from this week’s studio tour.

PlayStation 3

SOCOM 4: US Navy SEALs — (PlayStation Move – PlayStation Sharp Shooter – 3D Compatible) In South East Asia, a revolutionary army has seized control of a country bordering one of the world’s most vital waterways; threatening to disrupt the global economy. Your mission is to step into the well-worn boots of the Ops Com, a NATO Operations Commander of an elite, five-man squad. You must venture deep into inhospitable jungles, city streets and crumbling urban ruins to engage an army of rebel fighters and discover their plans. Although you’re vastly outnumbered, you’re armed with the latest weaponry and your men are second to none — but do you possess the stealth, speed and tactical thinking to lead them to victory? Time is not on your side: you have just six days to complete your mission. To emerge victorious, you must lead from the front, maintain control of the situation and fight with sheer intensity.

Mortal Kombat (3D Compatible)– After centuries of Mortal Kombat, Emperor Shao Kahn has finally defeated Raiden and his allies. Faced with extinction, Raiden has one last chance to save Earthrealm. To undo the Emperor’s victory, he must strike Shao Kahn where he is vulnerable… the Past.

Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favorite series is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. Mortal Kombat introduces a number of game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game’s iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes.

Portal 2 — The highly anticipated sequel to 2007’s Game of the Year, Portal 2 is a hilariously mind-bending adventure that challenges you to use wits over weaponry in a funhouse of diabolical science.

Using a highly experimental portal device, you’ll once again face off against a lethally inventive, power-mad A.I. named GLaDOS. And this time you won’t be alone. Meet an expanded cast of characters as you think your way through dangerous, never-before-seen areas of Aperture Laboratories. Break the laws of spatial physics in ways you never thought possible, with a wider variety of portal puzzles and an expansive story that spans a single player and co-operative game mode. PlayStation Portable

Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection (Also on PSN) — Offering the ultimate compilation of the FF IV saga, Final Fantasy IV Complete Collection offers Final Fantasy IV and its sequel The After Years into one package. A cast of unforgettable characters fight through one of the grandest stories ever told with stunning new graphics, a re-arranged, award-winning soundtrack, and bonus game features that provide the absolute FINAL FANTASY IV experience.

In Final Fantasy IV the kingdom of Baron begins employing unprovoked force to seize powerful crystals from peaceful nations. The dark knight Cecil – Lord Captain of Baron’s elite force, the Red Wings – is ordered by his king to obtain the Crystals, but soon begins to question the monarch’s motives. Enraged, the king accuses him of disloyalty, strips Cecil of his command, and sends him off to slay a mysterious beast that lurks in the nearby Valley of Mist. Cecil embarks on a fateful journey that will bring trials, betrayals, friendship, loss and self-discovery. Can Cecil open his eyes and become the man of honor that he must be?

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, unravel a mystery told through the intertwining stories of a familiar cast of characters, and complete the Final Fantasy IV experience.

Neutopia — In this action role-playing game, you take control of a brave boy who sets off on a journey to rescue the kidnapped princess and reclaim the eight medallions that were stolen by the evil demon, Dirth. You’ll need to rely on your magic compass and information you’ve gathered to find entrances to labyrinths and defeat the bosses in them. Solve puzzles, avoid traps, move blocks and destroy walls to uncover secret rooms in the labyrinths. Carefully use your map to uncover hidden treasure and powerful equipment. Travel the land, underground, sea and sky on your quest to recover the medallions.

Puzzle Guzzle — A block puzzle game where you spin sections of a puzzle as blocks fall in order to make triangular shapes match up for lines and shapes that roll into combos.

Arcana Heart 3 — Chaos and disorder are threatening to rip apart the very fabric of Japanese society as planar rifts appear throughout the country. It is suspected that the Drexler Institute, the instigator of the Great War many years ago and creator of the Divine Celestial Weapon, is somehow involved. In the midst of this confusion, a mysterious rumor arises, claiming the existence of wish-granting “Celestial Stones” within the chaotic planar rifts. As a result of these rumors, a number of individuals have converged on Japan in the hopes of obtaining one of these fabled stones – either to seal them away or to see for themselves if rumor is true. Each person has their own reasons for seeking these rare and valuable stones, and they won’t let anyone stand in their way, be they foe … or friend.

Fancy Pants Adventures — Run fast, run fancy in the home console adventures of Fancy Pants Man. The Fancy Pants Adventures takes all the excitement from the original two games and delivers an all-new adventure designed exclusively for console! True to classic platform game play, Fancy Pants Man speeds through an entirely new world to rescue his kidnapped sister, Cutie Pants. Racing through unique open levels, Fancy Pants Man will explore vast lands, defeat challenging enemies and overcome clever obstacles on his quest to save his sister.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 — The sequel to the groundbreaking Sega platfomer, here introducing new characters (Tails and Super Sonic) to the frantic platforming action play and even more lively graphics and sound.

Puzzle Agent — Welcome to Scoggins, a snowy little town of perhaps little particular interest … except that this is the setting of a new adventure game featuring the art of designer Graham Annable and gameplay by Telltale Games, masterminds behind the Bone, Strong Bad and Sam & Max adventures!

Duael Invaders — Duæl Invaders is an old-school, fixed-screen shoot ’em up, mixing the classic formula seen in countless great ’80s games with its own unique brand of simultaneous 2-ship control. The game’s concept is centered on the idea of controlling two player ships simultaneously (on a single PSP or PS3 controller) across single player and 2-player co-operative and adversarial game modes.

Farm Frenzy — If you thought life in the big city was crazy, wait until you get a load of the country life in Farm Frenzy. Daily chores have never been more entertaining as you cultivate your fields, feed your animals, and gather the items they produce. Keep the bears away from your ducks though, or you won’t have any eggs to sell at the market. Spend the money you earn on upgrading your farm to churn out more products even faster than before. Meet an amusing cast of characters with plenty of frenzy and enough strategy to keep things interesting for hours on end.

Snake Warriors: Training — Choose from nine characters and start your career as a Snake Master in Snake Warriors: Training. The game contains a career mode where you need to obtain as many medals as possible as well as a training mode where you can practice the levels and compare your scores with other players. It is also possible to unlock 6 armors, so that you can play the game in style.

Mad Blocker — Mad Blocker is a traditional puzzler based around the lining up of 4 or more blocks of the same color. The game is fairly straight forward but it’s the hand drawn visuals and ease of play that are the games main attraction. See how many Fluzzles you can save!!

PSone Classic

Dino Crisis 2 — The dinosaurs return and this time they’re really, really mad in DINO CRISIS 2. The government has secretly continued Dr. Kirk’s research into Third Energy. Once again a rift in time has opened, and everything related to the project is lost in time. Now, Regina and her special forces team must use a different time device and travel to the era where they believe the facility is now located. When the team arrives, it is quickly decimated by a dinosaur attack. It’s up to Regina and Dylan, the only two survivors, to find out what happened.

Threads of Fate — Threads of Fate combines two stories into one giant adventure. You can play as either Mint or Rue, who are both looking for an ancient relic. However, their motivations are completely different: Mint wants to use the relic to get revenge on her enemies and Rue wishes to use the relic to revive a friend who was killed by a mysterious monster. Since the two are on the same quest, their paths will cross from time to time but the two stories have different plots, tasks, and dungeons to complete. Further, the characters have different fighting and magic styles: Rue can transform into any of the last five creatures he has killed and Mint derives her power from the ability to mix and cast spells. Two quests for the same item create a fantastic fabric of the Threads of Fate.

  • getting Socom 4 and MK. I can’t believe how many people are getting portal 2. I’ll buy it used for $10 down the line. And that is about how much I care about Valve. I would like to tell them it’s to HARD to Develop $60 for a game when gas is 3.99gal. LOL:)

  • Might get Arcana Heart, but I’ll most likely wait until it’s on sale…

  • I agree, what a great line-up for the week, especially with 2 great PSOne classics! I’ve also already pre-ordered my PS3 Socom 4: Full Deployment at Amazon.com and looking forward to trying out the PS Eye, Move and Sharpshooter for the first time :D

  • I’m going to be purchasing both of the PSOne classics announced. Especially considering I never got around to playing Dino Crisis 2 the first time around :) I have a rapidly dwindling wishlist of PSOne classics that I’d love to play portably. Y’all keep putting them out and I’ll kep buying them!

  • I’m considering picking up Final Fantasy IV on PSN, but I have a question. As someone who already owns Final Fantasy IV: The After Years on that “Other” console, but never completed more than the first two chapters does this new version bring more to the table to entice me to buy the same game again?

(Also: Hooray for Portal 2! I should have mine in my mailbox by the time I get home from work)

  • Is M&M: Clash of Heroes getting a new demo this week? Is it the Online multiplayer?

Threads of Fate looks good. I might have to get that sooner or later. Its nice to see Square releasing a lot of its games on the PSN. :)

Here’s hoping we get a Portal 2 demo sooner or later.

  • Wow, Final Fantasy looks great, but I am also wondering when will Lego Star Wars be released on the PSN…..or will it ever be?

  • where are the hot wheel games for a ps3, it would be nice if “hot wheels turbo racing” ps1 was brought back!

  • Awesome :)

  • Cool drop, I just wanna add my voice to the requests for Einhander. I heard it was re-released for the Japanese PSN a couple of years ago and it would be beyond cool if that happened here, too.8)

  • socom, mofos, 5 items at 150, is like killing 5 birds with one stone

  • FFIV:CC’s release on PSN makes me very happy. After the KH:BBS snuff I was worried that S-E was going to pass on a NA PSN release for FFIV:CC. I may even consider purchasing Neutopia too, it’s a solid Zelda clone.

  • ARcana Heart 3, and Threads of fate for me.

  • Lack of Parasite Eve 2 on PSN is most disappointing.

  • Portal 2 :D
Now I gotta wait for it to ship to where I live T_T

  • Ok I admit I am new to this so my question may sound dumb. If it says drop the week of April 17th what day do they usually release the games? I have wanted to see Dino Crisis 2 since I bought my PS3 and searched for it and amazingly found that it was coming out this week. Now I cannot contain my excitement much longer.

  • NA PSN is usually updated on Tuesdays, between 3pm-8pm CST.

I have no idea what it is for other regions though.

  • and still NO word on Star Wars 3 legos download for the psp…../sigh

  • So many games, so little time. I picked up both MK and SOCOM this week, along with Might and Magic and Dungeon Hunter…ahhh. My wife is going to kill me when she finds me hiding in the basement not doing something around the house.

  • The network is down, so that means that no new disc based games are coming out either? Better not do a drop this week eh fellas?

(How many monkeys work over there?)

  • gotta get dinocrysis 2 was my favorite game on psx besides metal gear solid
