Killzone 3 multiplayer open beta

Hello PlayStation Nation! Killzone 3 launch is now just 30 short days away, but for those of you who just can’t stand to wait any longer, we’ve got some good news: The Killzone 3 Multiplayer Open Beta will be available for download on the PlayStation Network on Wednesday, February 2nd.

This Open Beta will be available for free to all North American PS3 users and will run from Feb 2nd-14th, giving you the perfect chance to get hands-on with Killzone 3’s brutal online warfare and try out the revamped precision controls. You will also have the option to play using the PlayStation Move and stereoscopic 3D.

The Open Beta will offers exclusive early access to the MP05 ‘Frozen Dam’ multiplayer level from Killzone 3, including all three online multiplayer modes: Guerrilla Warfare, Warzone and Operations, along with the offline multiplayer mode, Botzone.

“Frozen Dam” is a sprawling asymmetrical map set in an old dam facility, the playing field in MP05 has been carefully tailored to fit each of the multiplayer modes. Here are the four multiplayer modes included with the Open Beta:

Killzone 3 multiplayer open beta

Guerrilla Warfare (16 players)
Guerrilla Warfare is a standalone multiplayer mode similar to classic Team Deathmatch: You and your teammates must try to kill as many of the opposing team as you can before the timer runs out. In this mode, only the downstream monitor houses and repair bay are accessible, giving the map a very frantic pace.

Warzone (24 players)
If you’ve played Killzone 2, you may already be familiar with Warzone. It’s a round-based multiplayer campaign that consists of five randomly ordered mini-missions. In this mode, the power house and penstocks directly under the dam are accessible as well, so there’s more room to come up with different strategies and approaches to your goal.

Operations (16 players)
Operations is a new multiplayer campaign which aims to deliver a more cinematic, story-based gameplay experience, similar to that of Killzone 3′s single-player mode. It consists of a sequence of linear mini-missions, in which the ISA must try to secure the docks and destroy the dam, while the Helghast must try to protect the dam facility.

Botzone (one player and up to 15 bots)
Botzone is an offline multiplayer mode ideal for those looking to get to grips with the controls, the weapons or the map layout before going up against live players. Each of the aforementioned multiplayer modes can be played offline, against CPU-controlled opponents.

And of course, the open beta is just a taste of what you’ll get in Killzone 3’s multiplayer experience. For more details on Killzone 3’s multiplayer maps, check out the full briefing on

  • Can’t wait …the beta is free to download right?

  • Thank you for the nerd boner. I can’t wait to get this.

  • No but what about in Australia will we get to play it??

  • This makes me happy indeed!

  • Hey how do i sign up for the beta? is it on the psn store? or do i have to do something else?>..

  • @55 You will just download it from the PSN Store.

  • So awesome! quick question!!!
I wanna show my bro and cousin how cool this game’ll be, so the download helps them figure it out (i already pre-ordered :D), but I wanna know if I’ll be able to invite them to play with me during the open beta. any info helps.
    thanks SONY. you all rock.
one very happy satisfied loyal customer

  • #55 – Yes you do need to do something else…read the post!

  • Does anyone know if the PS Move Sharpshooter will be available when the open beta releases? And when will this open beta end?

  • Any chance you guys will be adding more vehicles to KZ3’s MP…?

Also, is it confirmed that co-op will only ever be split-screen and not online?

Lastly, how long would you estimate KZ3’s SP? And is it safe to say that all features of the game have already been announced?

  • This is great!

I want to play this game in 3D but I’m waiting for the new models and unfortunately they wont be out before this game is out.

  • PlayStation Store Updates on Tuesdays… How is the Beta coming on a Wednesday???

  • it’s a beta so they can make a patch after release for anything that was missed. everything is a beta now because if it’s a demo people get nit picky and judge it and then don’t buy the game because of something that was easily fixed with a patch at launch.

  • As Audrey Cleo says, amazeballs.

  • So does that mean the max amount of people online is twenty-four?

  • I hate how PlayStation (Sony) gives away things that “we” (PlayStation Plus subscribers) once had. Does that mean I shouldn’t have paid for the subscription in the first place and just waited 2 weeks to get the same thing PS+ got free, free?

  • This is going to be the game of the year.

  • I cant wait for about nerd boner.

  • man you picked the worst map from the closed beta too. Should have picked the Turbine level.

  • Awesome news, i really want to try the sharpshooter with this game.

@66 You guys got access to the close beta months ago….

  • Thanks for giving us Botzone – I tried Killzone 2’s multiplayer mode but I had no idea what I was doing and I got my butt kicked.

  • What happened to 32 players? Is 24 the limit now?

  • . . .
Too bad my lightly used 3yr old 80gb PS3 died last week to a YLoD. I would have been looking forward to this.

  • Shouldn’t this be called a Demo as the Game has gone Gold?

  • I agree with the comment about incorporating the Move in the open beta. I’ve had my eyes on the sharpshooter. Hopefully the Move will work and feel great while playing.

  • loved the gameplay in killzone 2 , i got killzone 3 beta after 2 weeks trying to get it , played it and it’s really really good but i was a little disappointed of the aiming , you should make it less faster , i know that i can change it in the option but all people will have fast aiming and the gameplay won’t be hard and challenging like in killzone 2 , you have to edit it …..

i got ps move just for killzone 3 so im excited to try it , the new beta was a suprise , it came fron no where XD .. thanks alot ! :D ….

all looks at this video :D :

it’s amazing , i see alots of people saying they are disappointed of the numbers of the players , it’s ok with me , i even like it , i don’t like playing with and against alots of people but you really should have made it bigger for the people who like it , since the maps big you should have put more players …

im good with everything you make , thanks alot for the beta :D … can’t wait to use move

  • One thing, in the beta, do we have to unlock classes like in Killzone 2, or do we get to use all the classes straight away, at least in the beta? Because I would like to see the alterations to the classes you guys have made before I buy the game.

    • All the classes will be unlocked from the start. If you’d like to test out each classes weapons & abilities, you can check them out in Botzone.

  • @ShadowRatchet6

you have to unlock it … :)

  • Will the move room be move players only? I really don’t want to be at an unfair disadvantage/advantage with playing against them(Move Players).

  • @ShadowRatchet6

you get points and then unlock the weapons…

same here , i don’t like playing against people who don’t have move , it’s hard playing move and playing against these people will make it much more harder in a bad way …. don’t worry , they said they will make move players separated from Dualshock 3 players :) …

  • @ 66 (BeardedSailor)
The PSN+ beta had three(3) maps, this beta has only one, plus you’ve been able to play botzone for the last month or so. UNLIKE ANYONE ELSE.
Seriously? are you TRYING to find something to complain about, or are you just naturally whiny?

  • Oh Yea Can’t wait to try it out with Move and 3D. Last Beta was awesome. Like the new control scheme

  • Awesome I get to warm up for Killzone 3. Killzone nation, Maurisio will be back at 100% so I will take over the leader boards from the beginning.

  • I dont see why there is only 8 multiplayer maps? Even if it was maps from the previous games, you need more than just a handful of maps to satisfy the hardcore gamer. Plus I paid extra for the previous maps. I cant wait to play the beta though, I just hope its not just more of the old, cause I really think this series is pretty cool, and would love for it to blow my mind. Hope the 3-D is really good too. Thanx GG. Sony 4 life.

    • DA_SHREDDER: Don’t forget to pre-order at participating retailers. You get you’ll get your hands on the Retro Map Pack for FREE… giving you more maps to play with.

  • Awesome News! Can’t wait for another piece of Killzone 3!

  • lets get this straight, I liked KZ2 and plan on playing the DEMO and picking up KZ3

However I feel Sony needs to be a little more honest with their pr moves… how can you beta a game that has gone gold?

I haven’t read anything here that tells us that the data collected will help improve the game and that we will be testing features that have yet to be confirmed.

Obviously its considered “cool” to be in a beta so Sony calls this a beta when in fact all it is is a demo… just call it a demo.

Just say what it is… stop calling it what its not.

  • Why was the player count moved down from 32 players in Killzone 2 to 24 players in Killzone 3?

  • How big is the file? I’d like to know so I can clear up some space…

  • Will Killzone 3 have split-screen offline or on-line multiplayer?

  • The only way I can rationalize this as a beta is if they are stress testing the multiplayer servers and the backend software for matchmaking and gameplay. The front-end client (The Game) supposedly went gold according to the PS Blog.

So will the “beta” be taken down once the game is in retail, or will it be renamed KZ3 MP Demo?

If we start seeing the beta/demo marketing fracture this really only seems to mess up PS Rewards (though it confuses me in a technical sense like some others on this board).

I’m psyched to try out the move with this game (Big selling point for me). Thanks for letting me try before I buy.

  • @31, it’s a beta to ensure that the network is stable. That means that it’s probable that people will run into some disconnect issues, although the only time I got a disconnect was on the Multiplayer menu in the Closed beta.

  • This is great for people to try the game out! I’ll hold off until the 22nd :).

Will players be able to mix bots in our matches online? If not, can you explain why? Also, will custom matches / server lists be available? Thanks.

  • Will Killzone 3 have online co op in campaign and not just offline co op?

  • Is there going to be a demo for the single player b4 release of game?? Y not start the beta right away?

  • Great choice with a beta! Gives people a chance to see how good KZ3 is!

  • Awesome, comes out on my birthday xD

Cant wait for this, the game modes sound so epic.
