Greetings PlayStation.Blog! I’m the studio director of Playbrains, and I’m here today to announce the awesomesauce that is Sideway, a unique adventure platformer set in and around the oh-so-gritty streets of New York City. The characters and story have been birthed from a fantastic world created by the quasi-evil geniuses at Fuel Industries and W!ldbrain.

To that point, we are inviting folks to come to New York Comic Con on October 8th (at 2:15 in Room 1A21) where we will officially announce the title as a Sony Online Entertainment exclusive to the PlayStation Network. Yes, that means that I am announcing the announcement here, which I guess makes this a “pre-announcement” to you PlayStation.Blog readers!

Sideway for PS3

We are in sooper-deep development at the moment (please send pizza and beer), which means that the belts are coming off and we’re settling into our coding chairs for winter in order to get things all sparkly for a 2011 launch. We’re not ready to spill the beans on some of the really cool features and unique gameplay elements in the game just yet, so until then, take a gander at some early concept pieces and composites from the game that should give you an idea of the world you will be tooling around in as an underground street artist in NYC. It will be an awesome game and we’re excited to be making it.

  • “Hopefully this won’t become a full-fledge war with pink puking bunnies, right?”

Actually, that’s exactly what I AM hoping for.
That and some invisible pumpkin pie.

  • Yes. Yes there will be.

BUT I HAVE SAID TOO MUCH ALREADY…

  • Professor Faulken

    “War Games” reference?

  • So, you cant comment on your self? Looks like you killed the chain!

  • “Are cracks appearing in the armour???!?”

    Everybody start piling!! loljkjk.

    • I was totally sucking you in with that.

Oldest trick in the book, dude. Can’t believe you fell for that…

*pulls backup glaive from his back

  • A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.
How about a nice game of chess?

  • How about checkers?

  • Though now I’m wondering, is there any horizontal gameplay?
What type of ESRB do you reckon this game will have?

  • Here is the worlds first, exclusive, review of Sideway, an all new exclusive to the PS3.

Sideway has a lot going for it, the visuals are top notch, running at 60fps and 1080p and maintaining no screen tearing, and loads of textures and things going on the screen at once. The art style is like I have never seen before, every aspect looks like I could make love to it, and put it on my wall.

However, visuals don’t make a game great, game play does. Sideway plays like a 2D platformer with elements that are new to the genre. Such as, a full fledge character system including vomiting bunnies. The game goes through various levels, some with trains, others in the city, providing a lot of variety for the gamer.

Sound is what you would expect from a PSN game, mostly great, although could use some work. The menu system was cool, but felt too limited. The game was also too short, running at just about 5 hours. Co-Op will keep you playing long after that 5 hours, but don’t expect it to last forever. Another major issue was a random glitch that prevented the bunny class from vomiting.

    8.5/10

    • That 8.5 is going to crush our Metacritic.

Still, your review is tough, but fair. We saw the lack of vomit, but thought it was just a problem with our older testkits.

In unrelated news, remind me not to look at anything on your wall, ever.

  • “Let’s play global thermonuclear war.”

    No thank you.

    Hey, I just won!

  • Don’t forget, you can raise your review score to a 10 through 100 easy payments of $19.99

  • “I told you we’re all winners!”

Well now I feel like we’re all being herded onto the short bus.

That puking pink bunny is starting to make more sense.

    • I have no idea what you mean.

Now watch your step and don’t take off your helmet until we’re at the park.

  • YOU are for sucks.

  • Scott Simpson reminds me of that dude that has no life but lays in bed, doing nothing but looking at his phone waiting for someone to reply to his text message.

  • Who thinks the replies will go at least above 500?

But by then, I fear one of us shall go insane.
    *shifty eyes with dramatic music*

  • Hey Scott, i still want you on my wall

  • Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you’re a mile away and you have their shoes.

  • Jidery speaks of great wisdom and truth.

  • Page 8 and Scott is still going strong! Bravo! In a totally unrelated story I am toooo tired to play my PS3 tonight. Unless I was playing Sideway..fast forward to the day of release and I will be. How is that foreshadowing for you?

  • Awwww still at page 7! But I have faith! Post ppl, I’m going to sleep..niters!

  • Who you callin shrek sir @.@

I was busy shanking dudes in the brotherhood beta, don’t mind me ^m^

  • … I meant ^_^ but I guess my phone found ^m^ more appropriate for dome reason… hmm

  • And dome better than some.. *looks at clock* oh… that may be why.

  • So Scott, why did you chose PS3?

    • Lots of reasons, but mostly because the game itself feels very “PSNny” (is too a word).

We talked about a lot of possibilities with SOE and were comfortable with what we could do on the platform.

Also, since we hadn’t developed for the PS3 before, we liked the chance to try something new.

It all added up to something that sounded like a lot of fun, so yeah…here we are!

  • Scott Simpson…you, sir, are a legend. I went through all 7 pages praying that you hadn’t stopped commenting…and you didn’t disappoint!
I will buy this, simply because of your wit. Well done.

    • Ahhhj, if only it were always that easy!

I smell a new marketing strategy going forward…

      MWAHAHAHA…

  • Oh noes

    *hides from evil scott*

  • Page 8 or bust!!

  • Whats it like to work with the Cell?

    • You’d have to ask the tech guys, but I think they’re enjoying it.

We’re also using Emergent Lightspeed tech for the first time, so a lot of that is taken care of for us.

(If it isn’t obvious, I have little to do with anything. I just sit around and look pretty…)

  • @Scott (who else would it be @?)so do I my friend..so do I..

  • So, what does studio directors do besides sitting looking pretty?

I’m guessing directing the studio, but that’s too obvious xD

What kind of specific things do you do? Besides being obsessed with these comments ;P

    • Businessy CEO stuff. Finance crap. Project greenlighting and mostly getting out of the way. Partnerships with publishers and suppliers. Sales goodness. Making sure the production & dev teams have what they need to kick-ass.

Stuff that make most people fall asleep, mostly.

That, and yeah, sitting around looking pretty.

  • I’m guessing playing MMOs’. /nod and all…

  • He will never break DJ
    NEVER!

Oh gawd,is that a bunny with a sniper rifle?
    Noooo not…agai….
    *foam comes out mouth*

  • WOW! 332 Comments and 330 replies. I bet you didn’t see the last two yet, otherwise, they will be replied to as well! Scott, you’re the man! I wish most bloggers will put at least 1/8th of the effort as you did for the PSblog fans and future customers your studio! I will be one of them! :D

  • @DieUnbeliever Check Scott Hyman from CreatStudios. He’s the only other one that replies allot :/

Oh ya, this article was on Sixth Axis

    • All Scotts are like this.

Someone should try tis on the Creed forums and see if Mr. Stapp really shares the same name.

…and now that damn song is in my head again.

      *cocks pistol…places to temple…

  • And the Capcom guy that runs all the competitions. Didn’t one of his posts get like 10,000 comments or something?

  • That is nothing to strive for, people!

  • Here to throw a monkey wrench in your perfect comment/reply ratio as usual… now what? Mwahaha :p

  • It looks good but over all I need more info. So the wait begins till 2011

  • I really feel bad for Scott, and his undying need to reply to each and every comment on this thread; though not bad enough to not continue to ask him questions.

Scott, what’re your top three favorite games?

    • No need to feel bad; this is fun!

      All-time faves:

      1. Diablo II
      2. Warcraft III
      3. Plants vs. Zombies

Honourable Mentions that might make the Top 3 if you asked me any other day:
      – GranTurismo 4
      – Colin McRae’s DiRT
      – Left 4 Dead
      – Drop 7
      – Worms
      – Warhammer 40,000
      – Company of Heroes
      – NHL 94
      – Toe Jam and Earl
      – Ultima III
      – Death Sword
      – GRID
      – Star Raiders
      – Galage
      – Burger Time
      – Vector TD

  • Now’s when someone is supposed to say “But there aren’t many real platformers on that list. Aren’t you making a platform game?”

    • And then I go “EXACTLY”.

‘Cuz a) we’re making a wonderfully unique platformer, b) refer to @331, c) most of the design and dev team on this game will talk your ears off about awesome platformers and what they love about them (and then talk more even when your ears are bleeding), and d) when you add up a)-c), that answers that.

      So there.

  • Hmm. Looks interesting.
Poor bunny. Your owner isn’t taking care of you but I’ll take care of you.
What I always wanted my own little bunny rabbit.
I’ll name him George and I will hug him and pet him and squeeze him.

    • Little known fact: Pink Bunnies live to vomit littler pink bunnies. It’s science.

Fun fact: I think of The Abominamanible Snowman more than I think of Lenny in that situation.

  • This game looks really good.

  • Science?! You speak blasphemy! It’s magic sir. MAGIC!
Tsk, tsk. You cannot rationalize this. It is a plague that must be stopped. Therefore I sanction all Pink Bunnies created, produced, and thought off before or after this post under my jurisdiction. Please deposit all bunnies into a bag. Any bag will do. Paper or plastic.

    • They will not stay contained in your paper bag too long with those acidic, nervous stomachs. I recommend the plastic.

      It’s pseudo-science.

  • *GASP*
You didn’t mention LBP in that list! >=( Oh and…….HA YOU MISSED A REPLY! If you do reply that means (dare I say it) THE PINK BUNNIES HAVE TAKEN OVER YOUR MIND!!!Duh Duhh Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    • I much more enjoy watching people play LBP than I do playing it, if that makes sense.

It’s a limitation of my caveman brain, I think.

  • Bravo my dear sir! I shall buy this game just for the sole fact that maybe a half of a penny goes into your pocket.

That being said, the game actually looks pretty awesome. Love the art style and love platforming games. I’m starting to get tired of the gritty realistic games. (Not tired enough to stop playing them.) Where’s the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro type games of yore…with their happy, bright feel good vibes.

Kudos to putting NHL 94′ on your list of favorite games. (I have an NHL 96′ poster on my wall.)

Thank you for being committed to consumers. Hopefully you’ve set an example for at least one other person working in the industry. If I had a medal, you would receive it.

My dearest condolences for the valuable time you’ve lost reading and replying to all these comments.

    • Thanks for your comment, fellow hockey fan. I also dig “cartoony” games and am loving how the game is coming together.

And don’t feel bad for my lost time.

      It had it comin’…

  • Wow, you took time out of your weekend to reply to posts too.
Truth be told, you work at a sweatshop don’t you?

Do you mean this Death Sword?
    http://www.giantbomb.com/death-sword/61-8604/

    • Yep, flying back from Austin this weekend, lots of time to reply…

And now I have time before delicious Canadian turkey.

To whet my appetite, I am now thinking of decapitating Paul in “Death Sword”, just as we did back in the day.

(Yep, that was the genius that was Death Sword…)

  • Hmmm…

My comment #347 is “awaiting moderation”

I didn’t realize all of those profanities and epithets required moderation.

    All zero of them…

    • “sweatshop” is close to “sweatsock” which sometimes is the only thing Flea wears.

It all makes sense, when you think about it.

  • Hey scot, just for fun im going to try to get to page 8, because we all know, its page 8 or bust!

  • @evilrubberduck

If you put a url in your post, it goes into the moderation stack of posts

    • See @351 for a pointless response.

But hey, at least we reached the PEPL (Page Eight Promised Land).

Thanks for the comments, folks. That was fun…
