The Mojave Wasteland is a dangerous and desolate place… so you feel the need for some companionship during your adventure. Like Fallout 3, New Vegas allows you to have one humanoid and one non-humanoid companion at any time.

Fallout: New Vegas’ senior producer, Jason Bergman, has put together a list of bios for the companions you’ll meet throughout the Wasteland. Learn more about them below. [Warning: some spoilers below]

She’s smart, tough, and steady with a gun, but she hasn’t been savvy enough to survive the ruthless caravan wars that have flared up in Nevada since NCR’s expansion. It was an eyebot on an incredible journey, carrying an enormous amount of valuable data when it was badly damaged and taken in by a Primm shop owner. Though ED-E still retains all of its data and an understanding of its mission, its internal positioning hardware is badly damaged. The only reason it has not been seized by interested parties is because ED-E has not communicated its special mission to anyone.

    So by your logic.
the doctor is of course wearing glasses. Doctors don’t all have poor eyesight. Seems as a patient of a doctor, I still have to educate the men and women of the gaming world.

One of my college professors said this “It’s only racist when someone puts it into that context. therefore the person who put it into such context is the actual racist.”
(had to say it my lecture today was about racism :)

  • Fallout has taught me that Africans and Mexicans aren’t human.

  • @BlaqueEssence

Educate us on what exactly? That it is wrong to put an African person in such a personality? Would it be more acceptable if Lily was Caucasian?

Cant wait for New Vegas by the way :)

  • does new vagas have vehicles that you can ride on?

  • sooooo how come every single human character companion is white?? could somebody explain who made that poor decision?

  • Draid99: “sooooo how come every single human character companion is white?? could somebody explain who made that poor decision?”

They do have an ethnic follower, it’s just a pretty damn concerning one…

Lillian Marie Bowen: African, a farmer, sneak perk (for thieves/assassins), “Heavily medicated” and a super mutant.

Her names not even original, it sounds like she was named by her old employees, so to speak.

It’s frankly not the best impression. How about someone like Jonas, as he was one of the friendliest NPC’s, but got shot early.

    -x-

And finally my post: Hopefully it’s not buggy this time, the damn thing froze too much whilst getting Platinum!

  • @Post 51 and Post 53

I am speaking in a perspective that is much different than yours so I will take your responses as just being naive of how black women, heck black people, are view in the gaming world. I was speaking in that context and also in the context character development. But, it would take an open-minded person to want that education from another perspective.

No, I am not saying that it would be better if she were another race, but if you have any clue on the stats of mental health, schizophrenia is one of the main leading mental illnesses in the african americans. Plus, look at her. I wouldn’t have minded it at ALL if it was a BLACK MALE. Why did she have to be a black female? See, had you actually READ my post, you two would have caught that. It was so blatant in your face.

First of all, I didn’t even KNOW that mutants actually had a RACE before mutants. I thought mutants were just that, a mutation. Am I right or am I wrong?

  • Now, you can take my comment and take it however you want it. I don’t have to explain myself to you two because based on YOUR responses, you didn’t even BOTHER to ask me where I got that idea from, why I felt that way, or why I called that out. You assumed that I pulled the race card out. Had you came correctly, you would would have caught that I said “black women”. It would have had no problem if she were male. But, shes a female. That’s a problem for me. You don’t see it. You never will and its also because you will choose NOT to.

So, by speaking from perspective, you wouldnt care or even have the eyes to read or the ear to hear, so why bother? Seriously?

You won’t listen, you WON’T care, so why even speak on it further? Take it how ever you want to take it. I’ll just leave it that and move on.

  • Again, if it were a black male, I wouldn’t have had too much of a problem with. I would still find it wrong that he has mental health issues AND has an addiction, but as sad as it is, it is something that I see in MY AREA where I live on a daily basis. But, for it to be a black female and for to have to be a MUTANT? That is wrong to me. She couldn’t be the doctor? She couldn’t be the trader?

That IS a problem for me. Like I said, you don’t see it because you choose not to. People fear what they don’t understand. That is what I mean by educating people. If I can help STOP the naivety, I will.

  • i know …. video game chaacters should have blank slate profiles . no race , no characteristics of any kind , including no personalities . nothing but robot voices with no past , no body , no form … wha ??? you cant make a game from that ??? well atleast you wont run the risk of offending anybody .

  • @BlaqueEssence “Now, I won’t blow this up out of proportion, but I will say, I would love to hear from the very person who thought that would be suitable for her to be african looking and behaving the way she does. It makes me thing that the character developers feel that that is how black women look and behave.

^^ no where are you arguing the fact that she is a she. you point out that she is African looking (which is stupid she’s mutant looking) and behaving how? no where does it say how she behaves. Just because from your experience certain ideals come to mind doesn’t mean that those ideas were the intent.

  • Wess….where in the world did I say she looked black. I asked why did she have to be an african female as a mutant, which is the lowest of the low to me.

This is what I mean when I said people do not read or comprehend before speaking. Take it however you want it…uh…”Wes”.

  • You know what, never mind. Forget I said anything. It seems I am speaking to someone majorly naive set of individuals. Just nevermind.

  • idk Fawkes from Fallout 3 I actually admired more then any other companion in the game. push past the looks, and mutants (in Fallout 3) are superior to any other character base in the game.

  • and on a side note. Where in the world did I say she looked black. I repeated your terms. I said “African” YOU where the one who brought up black.

  • thanks for the pot. very interesting stuff. definitely looking into fallout for later this year

  • Black and african are two different races but we come from each other just like YOU came from me, believe it or not. I’m sure you will have nightmares over that. Again, if you wanna live life being naive, then that is something you will have to live. You will have to look in the mirror and be satisfied with yourself.

But, guess what? I don’t have to put up with you. I mean, seriously, who are you to me? Honestly?

  • seriously you’re making less and less sense with each post. I think that you need to educate yourself more before you try to argue your point. I’m sure it’s valid but your arguments have no substance and you’re talking in circles. Go take a writing class or logics class.

Your argument is so unclear I can’t even give a rebuttal.

  • One thing I love about fallout 3 is that all the items exist physically in the game. Other rpgs (e.g. final fantasy), the items are just names in a menu. It’s really important for immersion, and things like people spend ages decorating their home with all the items they find.

PLEASE more radio stations!!! It can’t be that expensive to create compared to the amount it adds to the experience. Probably halves my enjoyment of the game if there aren’t any as it’s very lonely.

  • @wes and blaque
i think it is time for the two of you to just switch over to decaf. the game that will be out in a shade over a month is just that a game. enjoy it for what it is worth, or do i have to remind each of you the legal battles capcom went through with resident evil 5, and that black african woman shiva i think her name was, was just fluff for the game, and the game took place on africa, where the predominant populace is dark brown in color. just let it be a game that we can all enjoy, with hopefully no freezing glitches like we had with the fallout 3 game as a whole.
i may be a caucasian, but i try to keep things in perspective on a normal basis, which is what i hope you both can do, and just enjoy.
i have now weighed in and said my piece, and hope you guys can come to some sort of a resolution, because i am getting to old to keep going through this with people, as far as i am concerned we are all one color, and that is red on the inside, our skin color comes from different regions of living in the world over time. that is an anthropolgical fact taught by professors of that background.

  • Mega, neither you or Wes have anything to say to me mainly because I was responding TO THE BLOG, not to you two or anyone else but the blog and the person who wrote it.

So, for FUTURE references, next time just mind your own business. Be SMART in that.

  • Peeps you need to calm down with the race wars. African, Jamaican, Siberian, Swedish or whatever, if people would call people by their names and not their races we’d have none of this stupidity.

I still stand by my point that whoever at Bethesda designed the character details for Lillian had outside inspiration from the uninspiring stereotypical values and unethical treatments of real world people, both in past and present; either that or it’s a big coincidence. One that’s not going to get changed anyway, but as someone else suggested it needs more inspiring characters, you know – like Jonas!

    -x-

  • The only racist thing about different characters being different races is that you people point it out….I don’t see anyone complaining about any of the white characters being white…They added diversity to the game through expanding character cultures. It is a video game not a portrayal of today’s human society. Would you prefer it if EVERY character was white? Or if they were all African or Hispanic? This is just like with RE5…People who have way to much time on their hands just had to look for things in the game that seemed racist. The plot of RE5 was set in Africa, would it make any sense at all if all the ‘zombies’ or ‘infected’ or whatever you want to call them, were all white? Game companies are already under enough scrutiny as it is, trying to be creative while the world of overly concerned parents and government officials who want votes breathes down their necks and tells them what they can and cant do. if anyone out there is like me then you look at video games as a form of creative media just like a movie or a book. It is almost an art form. Game designers are the storytellers of a technological age and they are getting edited and censored by people that have never even owned a game console.

  • The bottom line is that just because a character in a video game is a certain race and acts a certain way does in no way at all represent that specific race as a whole and everyone that is so narrow minded as to think so are the only people that i will EVER consider to be racist. As a side note i don’t even own a PS3 but i had to make an account here just to try to do my part in helping out an already overly criticized overly focused upon part of my past present and future life. Oh and Fallout 3 kicked @$$ is every way possible.

  • Well it does seem pointless to identify the race of a Super Mutant, but what’s done is done. And I don’t call racism, because I didn’t complain when Red, the doctor of Big Town in Fallout 3, was designed as an African-American woman. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of half-wits, jerks, and homicidal maniacs from a variety of ethnic groups in Fallout.
Meanwhile, back at the blog update… I can’t wait to play New Vegas. I’m sure they’re well aware of the bugs that plagued Fallout 3 and, like any decent company, have attempted to resolve the issues.

  • I will be getting this, i loved fallout 3 even tho that was the first one i ever played. The game was amazing, i got it for the 360 tho but since i play mostly on my PS3 i think i will get this one for it, i buy on the PS store often so if dl content arrive it would be easier for me to get them. I dont have gold membership on xbox or never have bought content there, i never played the fallout 3 expansions :(

  • I am waiting patiently for this game and will be pre-ordering the collectors edition around the beginning of October. I probably have over 1000 hours of FO3 under my belt and can’t wait for the fun to start.

  • the main 2 things i was wondering is how can there be a female super mutant unless by female you ment from her life before being transformed into a mutant. Fallout 3 stated that super mutants had no sex (excluding a blog someone said saying fawkes used to be male even doe in the females cell).
Secondly and more importantly will there be a GECK for new vegas. some of the mods people made were great expessially some of the quests and new stuff people created themselfs.

ps how long till you release the PC requirements?

  • why does sony censor blog posts?

  • Will there be any new random events? Like how fallout 3 had the Firelancer.

  • Wow, some people like to complain a lot. Sure the game was glitchy and froze up once in a while, I know what you’re saying I’ve played like 800hours but the game was really worth all those bugs. And stop saying it was more glitchy on ps3 cause I played on pc too and it was the same.

  • People complain all the time about how glitchy the PS3 model is, I don’t get it. I almost didn’t buy the GOTY edition because of it. I have spent a 100 hours on this game on ps3 and it has froze up on me maybe 2x, and one of those was in the Pitt. Can’t wait for this game.

  • Matt, feel free to answer this one if you can. I’m a PS3 gamer, but im not here to complain, but since you guys never tried to solve our problems in the PS3 port, like you did for PC and XB360, give me one good reason to trust you guys again, with the PS3 port! Nonetheless, i just hope that New Vegas is as good as Fallout 3 or even better.

  • Am I the only person who ran through hundreds of hours on Fallout 3, with nary a crash or freeze?

  • Hi! Can’t wait for this game but I really need to know: why can’t Marcus be a companion? Please answer this for me…

  • The majority of the posts here are correct. The PS3 release of FO3 and the DLC content could be difficult to play without crashes/freezing and the like. But I found that my system only froze or crashed after my save files were up around 9-10,000 kilobytes.

I do hope in earnest that FO:NV doesn’t have the problems FO3 had. I haven’t looked forward to playing a game so much for far too long a time.

  • Well, because FO:3 is mentioned here, im having a problem with the DLC, mothership zeta and broken steel to be exact.

I needed to re-download them, only problem is, they just won’t install, i keep getting an error. Anyone know where i can find info or if theres a fix. Thanks

  • Honestly, I really think this game is gonna suffer on PS3. Its using the same engine adn all that of Fallout 3, and that was a mess on PS3.
