UPDATE: Thanks for all of the feedback. Just a quick update, 3.40 has been released. In addition, PlayStation Plus is now available in the PlayStation Store.

We’re thrilled to hear that many of you are excited about the five star rating feature. This feature is retroactive for all of your PlayStation Store activity, so you can jump into the store right now and start rating all of your past purchases. Look for a “Rate” button on the product pages.

The PSN App on Facebook is also live. You can find it here: http://apps.facebook.com/playstation.

Hi everyone, once again we’re adding new features to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system via firmware update to ensure we’re bringing you the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible. PS3 system software update (v3.40) will be available soon, adding the PlayStation Plus subscription, enhancements to the connection between your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts and more. Additionally, we’ll be launching system software update (v6.30) for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system simultaneously with PS3 system software update (v3.40), adding PlayStation Plus compatibility as well as other new features.

We’ve gone ahead and provided a few highlights from PS3 firmware update (v3.40) below:

  • PlayStation Plus: PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership to PlayStation Plus; a new subscription service on the PlayStation Network that provides you with new options to expand and enhance your gaming experience and enable you to gain an exclusive set of features and content. Friendly reminder, all of you PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive features while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of gaming features, content and functionality.
  • Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows you to upload, browse and comment on photos on Facebook and Picasa Web Album. You can also opt to share your photos between your PlayStation Network friends as well as print photos from Photo Gallery.
  • Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables you to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
  • Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate the PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
  • Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at 2 hours, providing you with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.

In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application on Facebook.com will be made available. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to publish purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows you to display your PlayStation Network profile on your Facebook account, find out which of your Facebook friends have a PSN account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view your PSN friends’ online status and add the PlayStation Network application tab to your Facebook user profile.

  • dang we got to wait until tomorrow for PS + :( that just bummed me out lol

  • wow, you mean available now. updating now.

  • @405 and 407

Talk to your friends and ask how many come to ps blog or forums. Talk to random people you meet and do the same. Only a small percentage actually participates in tryin to change, comment, agree and disagree on the things they care about. Do the math.

  • its out now fw v3.40 is out now

  • GEE IS THE UPDATE OUT YET? DURRRRRRRRR shut up with these posts already.

  • sweet!!!! =D

  • Downloading right now. New features look cool, and obviously I’m gonna try a few of them right away. Also, I love to brag about my Trophies on Facebook. Full integration means I can be more annoying to my friends.

    Thanks Sony!

  • Sorry in advance for being quite frank here. But, these new features are of not much use to me and for a decent amount of gamers. I know it is a value add to the PS3 system, but common, we would prefer a PC/MAC to do all this video/photo related stuff.

Here’s really what Sony can offer to delight the existing customers, bring in thousands/millions of more customers and to stun the competitors. ***Provide backword compatibility to PS2 games on new PS3 Slim systems*** (through a System software update of course)

    What you say???

  • Just found a little trick folks:

If you go to the System Settings, there’s an option for the auto updating with a PS+ logo next to it. If you choose to turn it on, it’ll ask you if you want to sign up for PS+. I just did it; it works! :)

  • ps+ available 4 purchase

  • I like the update. Unfortunately, I have to point out something that’s been overlooked in updates that’s been promised in the first half of the year-Netflix on the system and not via a disc.
I just think that if you’re going to make a statement that it would be integrated in a timeframe, you either have to stick to what you say or admit that it’s not possible.
Otherwise, I like the direction you are going. Keep up the good work.

  • I’m really loving how the PS3 is becoming a great media sharing device now. (The ability to upload photos and videos to facebook and youtube is really awesome!)

The video editor seems really cool as well! It just so happens that I have $50 on my PSN account, so I just might subscribe to Playstation Plus for a year! ^_^

I’m very curious though… What’s in the PSP update?

  • squallxlionheart

    Freaking awesome sony….

Still need cross game voice chat.. but this update is EXCELLENT

  • holy wow at the wicked slow downloads speeds for stuff from the store now. 18 minutes to get a 332MB file, you guys arent forcing plus on us at all…..

  • 3.40 features sound cool…but im expecting backgroud music playback, which is not available in latest updates :-(

  • A step in the right direction. Access to trophy information should be open to many more sites, including giantbomb.com

  • im now a member of ps+

  • wonder when we get our free stuff

  • So what about the Netflix APP? When exactly is that going to get integrated? Using the disc is getting old real fast. I have already had to get a second disc because for whatever reason the PS3 would not load the original. Second worked fine but the app would make it much easier.

  • @455

Netflix for PS3 came out in 2009, at the time they said the non-disc version would come out NEXT YEAR (= 2010). So you’re a bit too early on the whining. They still got several months left.

  • Great Update. Facebook used to SUCK using your PS3, lol.

  • @455 once the Microsoft exclusive contract is up for non-disc use of netflix (installed natively) I’m sure sony will be all over that!

  • Sounds cool. That’s more than normal.

  • I look at these updates as being not really updates or good added features more like Sony playing ketchup. PlayStation Plus has nothing more to offer me. Don’t understand the point of Photo Gallery but okay. Facebook okay whatever to that as well. Still don’t know anyone that uses the 360’s Facebook option along with Twitter on a gaming system.

Video Editor & Uploader: A Mac comes with a built-in camera and much nicer video editing software. Even Windows comes with its own Movie Maker software. This new feature maybe the biggest waste of a programmer’s time. Don’t get me wrong programmers need to get paid to.

The last few updates have been more of a disappointment then anything. But keep on doing it. If it’s working for you then why stop. I mean I’m only the gamer that buys the product. Why should it matter to me what you do?

I’m sure that I am the only person that owns a PS3 that doesn’t care or thinks that a number of the PS3 features are useless.

When you add the backwards compatibility for PS2 games to all PS3’s I will be at your front door with flowers and candy. Along with two tickets to that thing you have been asking me to take you to.

  • Just bought PSN+
i can say: WOW!! really AMAZING!
so many free DLC i dint have…
and i love my new yellow + on the left side of my account name
already downloaded for over 30$ of DLC that i needed to complete some PSN game i bought before.

  • Very Very exiting Feature!!!
    Thank you SONY!

  • wheres the Plus content? I can’t find.

  • wow, this is a tight update, i really like the facebook additions. and yeah, i freakin want cross game chat as well. but overall, every year i am a little more glad i am a ps3 owner, this system just keeps getting better. cant wait till GT5!!!!!

  • ‘Select Auto Download, Time, and Agree to be a Subscriber.’

  • i cant get the video editor to work with the eyecreate software..like i finished the update..then i made a new video with eyecreate but it says that the video cant be from an earlier software of copyrighted

  • automatic download happening right now!

  • I found it, but wait why is there ONE static theme?????????

  • i’m a little confused about the facebook app. is it on facebook.com or is it something that came with the update because i already downloaded it an didn’t see anything…..if anyone knows the answer just lemme know

  • No update for PSN ASIA specifically PHILIPPINES this sucks!

  • Great update Sony!

Favorite new feature, trophy level next to your PSN card AND your friends’ PSN cards.

  • In my opinion, you need to focus more in the user experience.
    A more better web browser.
more crossplataform communication and gaming options. (msn, skype, multiplayer against computer o Xbox users)
open your maind and see out of the box.

  • Playstation Plus is a rip-off. Thankfully, unlike X-box Live, I can continue to play my games online without having to pay a dime. Having a discount in the store would be nice, but not $50 nice.

    Facebook, meh.

Photo and Video Uploading without having to shuffle to the PC and move photos/videos I make on the PS3 over to it = nice.

You know what would be awesome features to add?

    Linux Support
    PS2 Backwards Compatibility.

    TO ALL MODELS OF PS3.

Too bad these won’t happen as Sony has to be boneheaded and stupid about things like these.

  • no free dynamic themes? :( what’s all available any avatars?

  • WOw how bout adding something actually useful like other os was…..ps3 use to be a nice bang for your buck pc/ gaming system.

  • Will there be a free trial available at any point in time?

  • nice but i want ps2 bc and game invites.

  • WOW!!! I GOT HAPPY BECAUSE I THOUGHT OF EYECREATE… YOU CAN’T EVEN USE THOSE VIDs WHAT A BUBBLE BURST!!! :(

  • this reminds me of that one line from kung fu panda : ‘And emenies go blind from pure awesomeness’.

  • @Cyb3rfr34k-iso

My bad for saying that “after gaming”. Sure, it will only shutdown when idling for the configured amount of time, but the console will shutdown if it’s folding, for example. You can hear noises after it shuts down and that’s what worries me. The materials are expanding or retracting at that specific moment and this is the only link I have to that happened.

Also, I’ve cleaned mine eventually. And I wonder how can you say that yours were all always running at low temperatures… (Nevermind, I’m kidding ;) )

I never had any problem with the Blu-Ray drive, thou. Still, I hope it’s the PSU, which could be a lot simpler to solve. Damages to the motherboard soldering scare me a lot and yes, if it is the poor manufacturing at China, they should stop the manufacturing there altogether. It’s bad for us, it’s bad for their people (from what I know) and it’s bad for the planet, at the end of things: you’re wasting resources from our precious (Have I said that again?) planet on things that won’t last. I’m not sure if you share my view on this.

Thanks for the thoughts, any way.

  • Seriously this update is epic, im loving the video editor feature, just uploaded a video to youtube, loving it!! o and i can see people trophy level without clicking on them!! great update guys!!

  • And yet, still no A2DP support?!?!?! It’s 2010 and I was sure that Sony would make sure the PS3 would support something as simple as stereo bluetooth headsets! There are quite a lot of us who live with other people and don’t want to wake them at night while we’re playing, or want to listen to music through our PS3 without disturbing others. Come on Sony, please incorporate A2DP support in the PS3 in the next firmware update! I mean it’s only implementing an updated bluetooth stack. If Apple can do it for my iPhone 3GS, surely you can do it for the PS3!

  • Where is the Facebook app?

  • PSN Plus is live and Sony still hasn’t told us everything we get for the first two months.

    My god, this is idiotic.

  • OMG ! am so getting this i love you sony and one outher thing if your a Qore one year subscription mine well end in december well that efct it wan i get playstation + ???

  • is there discount and other cool features in PSHOME for PSPLUS subscribers
