New PlayStation Protection Plan provides added peace of mind

Hi everyone! Many of you can attest to the fact that the PlayStation brand has long been synonymous with the highest quality in engineering and design. For those of you looking for a little extra peace of mind, we’re now offering an extended service plan for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) and PSP (PlayStation Portable) systems that is backed by SCEA and leverages our technical expertise. Under the new program, PS3 and PSP owners in the United States can purchase an extended service plan of one or two years that begins after the original one-year manufacturer’s limited warranty expires.

With the PlayStation Protection Plan, you can extend the same coverage from the original manufacturer’s one-year warranty for one or two additional years.   • It’s about time that Sony introduced these extended warranty plans. Why the delay, Sony?

    Also, for people who are upgrading their PS3 hard drives – Sony should sell those PS3 hard drive screws that are easily stripped and very difficult to find.

  • This plan is complete [DELETED]!!! The loyal customers that bought their systems on launch, or close to launch get take advantage of this offer! Now I know, I will never buy a Sony system with a few months or years of launch! It’s a slap in the face to loyal customers! Come on SONY!! Remember how you got here! From loyal customers like me!!!! I just got off the phone and the guy said 60GB systems wont work on this offer!!

  • Sony: You also need to start helping out people who upgrade their PS3 hard drives by selling those screws that are so easily damaged and very hard to find at local stores as well as on the Internet.

  • it is a shame really since i bought my ps3 and both psp units secondhand. so unless there was something in there to cover those as well then i guess my wife and i are screwed.

  • we bought 160 GB ps3 and 2 1st gen psp units for a grand total of $250.00 would like a warranty but can live without it, and we take extremely good care of our electronics.

  • So I go out and buy a new PS3 w/ 2yr extended service plan, it dies, I send it in for repairs and get a refurb back. Now is my extended warranty any good? Refurbs only have a 90 day warranty correct? How will that all work out?

  • Can you buy a warranty after you’ve paid for a repair? If not that’s really really awful.

    I have a friend who’s paid 300$+ for 2 repairs to his console that got YLOD. He was very unlucky unfortunately but you need to offer this to people who are willing to shell out 150$ for the repairs too.

    It’s not fair to those people they have to basically go out and buy a new PS3 and then do the warranty. What about people who bought the system at a higher price earlier on? You should offer this to people who pay 150$ to repair their console as well.

  • i just bout a slim 4 days ago because my 60gb keeps red flashing light after repairs with in yea though i think its the BD drive gave out this times… since its under an ecternal warrenty itll be fixed then sold with a 250gb harddrive, can i put these on my psp go? ill do it for my systems soon since i have a go and a 4 day old slim.

  • @napkin, my ps3 60gb system died 4 times… i really had enough.

  • i’m still under warranty for a year but i don’t need it. i have a Best Buy two year warranty so if something happen to PS3 i get a new system.

    What a bunch of bull! If you heard us from the beginning this would have been implemented earlier, before all the YLOD’s. The more you guys speak, the more we see the way you do business. Matter of fact, what’s the point of even having this blog, instead of advertising releases? A don’t say that share blog is working, because we all know it’s not.

    When you guys get gut-check questions, you ignore us, go into hiding and release statements like what I quoted. But if someone puts a simple statement, like “I can’t wait for this” you guys are quick to reply to it. I understand you cannot answer everyones question, but I’ve seen too many duck and cover tactics. Skip a good question, just to reply to the next one below it. Wanna prove me wrong, answer some of the good questions or statements on this issue. What a damn joke…

  • Isn’t or Wasn’t this offered when anybody purchased a PS3 or PSP? When I purchased my fat PS3 back in 2006, I purchased a 2 year warranty, for $50, (through Gamestop), on the spot; and when that warranty ran out, I renewed my warranty by purchasing another 2 years through Gamestop. Well, it is now 2010 and my warranty just ran out and I will be making another trip to Gamestop to renew, yet again, another 2 year warranty. Of course, I do not know if Gamestop still offers this or not, but you better believe I will be finding out soon….I do know that this new warranty is on newer systems with a working warranty already…….Now that I think about it, I do not know if the warranty was just the manufacturer’s warranty or the warranty Gamestop had for replacing a broken system. Anyhow, I have had a warranty on my PS3 for the last four years and it has cost me around $100 ($50/2 yrs.) for the said warranty.

    I guess this means I’ll have to continue to shell out $150 every other year (as I did last fall) to get my old 60gb model fixed. YLOD is real and is not caused by the end user. Charging people for “protection” or repair is pretty shady.

  • Does this protection plan protect us from features being removed?

    You know, like if we buy a PlayStation with a certain set of features and abilities, are we protected from the value of our hardware being diminished by things other than time by those features being removed later?

  • @8 you are aware the reason thr 360 warranty was extend from the standard electronics warranty of 1 year to a 3 year plan was due them facing a full product recall and multiple civil suites. By extending that warranty they save more money by just repairing the defective units, then they would spent on repairing every unit that had been sold, as well as court cost and payment if they were ruled against.

    I purchased both of my 60 Gig PS3 and PSP from amazon. I was never offered a warranty and my PSP 2000 is going strong. My PS3 YLOD’d on me not too long ago. That is the first time I have ever had a problem with a video game system. Going back as far as Commodore 64, I believe in taking great care of my systems and games. My PS3 had enough ventalation, I clean it every 4 days, I don’t even play it for hours on end.

    There’s no excuse for it to break down, when I’m doing everything on my end to stop it from happening. Then to offer a protetion plan this late into the lifecycle is ridiculous.

  • Ummm….thats cool………but what about those who have older models? Or does SCEA not care about us anymore?

  • This is a nice idea, but the fact that you only allow this purchase to those currently in the free warranty period shows you don’t have faith in the older machines.

    You should really offer this to everyone. Microsoft may RROD, but at least they have shown a commitment to fixing it.

  • This is just another moneymaker for $ony. I pay less for insurance on my car (considering its value is many thousands of dollars more) and it has more chance of damage on the road than my PS3 in my nice comfy living room.

  • i had my ps3 for 2years now and i didn’t have the warranty when i got my ps3 do i need the warranty to buy the extend warranty?

    • The plan is available to those who are still within their 1-year original manufacturer’s warranty that’s provided with the PS3.

  • The Playstation brand is not synonymous with high quality. It is synonymous with the Yellow Light of Death. My dead 60GB PS3 which I paid $600 for and is now sitting in my cupboard attests to that and mine is one of thousands of dead PS3s. I can’t believe you have the gall to post that while charging people $170 to have their console fixed, a console that died in less than 24 months. Even then it’s only a 3 month warranty after repairs. Shame on you.

  • It’s pretty useless to have a protection plan when nothing can protect all the data you have on your PS3.

    The DRM is so overdone that you can’t even backup your data. There’s a backup facility, but it will not restore data to a different PS3. So it’s rather useless.

    And if your PS3 breaks, and you send it in to Sony for repair, _they send you a different refurbished unit_ which you can not restore any backups to. So everything is lost.

    Sony: How is _that_ a protection plan?

    You need to have a solution for data recovery when a PS3 breaks. I don’t care about the cost of a new PS3. They’re cheap. I do care about losing my data.

  • You’ll are kicking my teeth in on this one. My PS3 kicked the bucket (YLOD) last August (yeah, it’s been rough with all the new releases passing me by) and I had a 2-year warranty from the retailer I bought (or 1-year cause Sony covers the first) and now you’ll roll this out?

    Question: If I were to purchase the extended warranty *NOW*, would I still be able to send in my busted PS3? Or because it’s outside of the original 1-year time-frame, and busted before the extended warranty is enabled, I’m still out of luck and still have to pay the $150 or whatever?

  • So it’s like Apple Care? Can buy the plan anytime within the basic 1yr and the extended years plan doesn’t start until the original 1yr ends? So you can have 3 straight years of coverage? Rock on. A little late, but glad to see Sony has seen there is a problem.

    • That’s correct — you can buy anytime within the first year of the original warranty’s coverage.

  • How about Canada too? We even have to phone the same number as the US for service, so why not include us too. As a person that’s had too get his PS3 repaired 3 times, well I would jump at this.

    I spoke about the DRM issue for the previous two weeks, and guess what sony responded with? Nothing as usual. This is what they do best it seems as of late. Maybe it’s time gamers start grouping together and target media to ask our questions, since that’s all Sony ever responds to.

    Most of my games I have I can’t save due to DRM. I don’t care about leaderboards and such, since that was the excuse given for it. And if that’s the case, why is Heavy Rain protected? That doesn’t have leaderboards. I want to be able to save my game files, so if something happens again to my PS3, I can have somewhat peace of mind. Game data can always be re-downloaded.

  • just another way to force us to buy the new ps3. im on my 3rd ps3 and i paid twice now for repairs.i got attude from every service person i talked to. ps3 is the best but they provide very bad service for (their) older models.years ago i paid alot for my ps3, today i could have bought like 3 ps3s with that. i think the early buyers (the people who boosted the ps3s sales and made it king) should get atleast better cheaper service! sony without us you would be hurting for sales! and the crapbox would be king.

    I bought my PSP off of eBay but it is the Assassin’s Creed edition meaning it’s less than a year old. Would I be able to get coverage for it even if I don’t have the original receipt since I’m not the one that original bought it?
