The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

[DELETED] Y O U SONY!
i bought a PS3 with all these features….B/C, Other Os, background video, background music…etc. and Ive been waiting on other features to come. but it seems like every time i update i lose features.
when are you going to pull your heads out of your [DELETED] and add some [DELETED] features, and give us back all the ones you took away
and fyi: im on board with the lawsuit, and with geohot ( hes gonna hack the ps3, just like he did the iphones/ipods ) <- LMAO
sony your in a world of hurt now!
get ready for the ps3 to get [DELETED][DELETED] by hackers, because of your stupidity.
waste of $600 ([DELETED])
Epic I wished this apon you. But I don’t believe a word you speak as I have heard nonsense from you all night.
Where do I start?
@Epicfail let me start by saying that any Marine who found you out could snap you in half and use you as firewood. Also, false advertisement is a crime and stop playing with that or youll go blind.
@The people who bought an older ps3.., im sorry.
Last year I was only 14 and I spent 4 months making $40 a week to get an 80 gig and they stopped ps2 compatibility two weeks before i got it but i let it slide. Since then, the slims came out and were wayy cheaper but they had less features. BECAUSE THEY TOOK OUT THE HARDWARE NECESSARY GOR OTHER OS. I never used other OS but I paid $100 more so I could have the option. I want my Benjamin back. That is false advertisement and i feel betrayed. I thought you cared for people but youre just another cold-hearted corporation.
@coreyfatass
You all need to get in a pile, Soak yourselves in gas, Jump into a flaming bus and drive off the end of a cliff.
“Please be assured that SCE is committed to continue the support for previously sold models that have the “Install Other OS” feature and that this feature will not be disabled in future firmware releases.”
-Geoff
Anyone else remember this?
i feel sorry for hotz. he’s going to have to work another 500 hours to fix the mess he made. he has to do something or some psycho linuxless ps3 owner is going to beat him to death with a protractor or graphics calculator.
I remember that Mattimeoo, and I remember how glad I was to hear that at the time. Oh, the irony…
This is really an outrage. Sony I hope you have plans to roll back this update… Hackers are there and always will be…. even with this update they will find a way around it through software manipulation or that of the actual hardware… I’v used Linux on my system for months now, and loved the fact that my gaming system could do so much. Now it seems that something that I factored into my purchase of this game system is being stripped away. What’s next… are the new models not going to have blue-tooth… a blue ray drive… wireless internet built in… what else are you going to take away from us? How about you start charging us money to get online each month… I spent a hundred dollars extra for this system as compared to the x-box… I also pay the premium prices for games seeing as though they are usually 10-20 bucks cheaper on the xbox… I bought this system and used it for what it did best… almost everything… Now I question my decision… Eat me Sony…. Eat Me!
The biggest issue here is that even if patched the exploit could be made workable. While I think this was heavy handed to nothing huge yet, I also think its too little too late. If the hack as it stands now leads to further exploitation, then it is logical that hacked fw would accept the old hypervisor code. This sort of created a future easy mod. Eleminate PSN (from ‘modded’ consoles) and someone will figure out how to tunnel or emulate it. Why bother at this point? It was bound to happen.
Anyway to downgrade your firmware to 3.15?
You guys, do not do what Mattimeo is telling you to. it violates your warranty and it is highly probably it will break your system. You might not like me or what I say, but really are you going to do something as shady as that? Don’t take the chance.
i still dont understand where this “selling point” comes from. I followed PS3 when it first came out and right before it came out and there was never any mention of it. Even when I was being talked into buying one at Best Buy and gamestop, it was never mentioned. When I see flame wars between Xbox and PS3 fans…I never see the “It can have another OS on it” as a winning point for PS3. You guys are just trying to focus it on that now because its being removed. Good lord, get over it people. It will not be missed.
This is an open letter to ThE-AnNiHaL8R
The other evening when the firmware was announced you spent a good amount of time trying to convince everyone that this was an April Fools joke (which would have been retarded but nevertheless). You spent a good amount of time insulting people and calling them idiots and worse in some fanfueled rage that denied reality.
So how about you come on here now and explain why firmware 3.21 is now live and does exactly what SONY advertised?
Cheers.
lol that’s not even an update aprils fools i believe
although i dont care if i can install OS or not
lmfao @ xeltos. I <3 you.
What the Flippin Junk Yard dogs!!! I updated to v3.21 and my ps3 would not play SVR 2010 untill I switch the power off by the back. There isnt any new features that i can find its still the same 3.15 with less stuff this is dissapointing if Sony does not do something about this I am going to sell this good waste of crap for a 360. This is total [DELETED] why are we getting punished for what a couple of people did. Sony your about to lose a loyal customer actually alot more cause im spreading the word.
ok well commenting here is pointless… but still are the icons bigger?
TO EVERYONE THAT SUPPORTED THIS “UPDATE”:
OtherOS was the reason the PS3 has not been “hacked” yet. OtherOS was the reason there is no unauthorized code running on the Game OS and OtherOS was the reason there is nobody playing pirated games.
Why bother cracking the firmware when Sony gave people the capability to install Linux and run whatever code they wanted?!
Homebrew is not piracy. Homebrew enthusiasts crack systems, pirates take advantage of the enthusiasts and piracy begins.
Homebrew enthusiasts had no intrest in creating a custom firmware to run unsigned code because OtherOS allowed them to do it.
Now with OtherOS gone, the only way to do that is by creating a custom firmware.
As soon as custom firmware is created, game loaders will appear, ISO loaders will appear and then hacking will appear.
And then the cat and mouse game PSP owners have been dealing with begins: regular updates to fix bugs found in the firmware hackers/pirates use to install custom firmware.
Sony is asking for piracy to happen. It would never have happened in OtherOS.
Remember that.
I am not a troll, I am a decent human being with more common sense then you or any of the other retards here. Besides Xeltos. He’s one cool cat. In fact, I am adding Xeltos to my super list of elite PSN friends. Because hes swell and makes more sense then the whole lot of you combined.
What is Geoff email address maybe he is the guy we should be asking a refund from.
I remember this and just spend 90.00 yesterday for a bigger drive to put the os on as my 80GB is almost full. I want 190.00 for the drive and the price difference between the phat PS3 and the slim.
The method that I am mentioning cannot and will not harm your PC nor PS3.
The method I am mentioning WILL NOT get you banned. It WILL NOT harm anything. It WILL NOT void ANY warranty. It breaks ABSOLUTELY NO RULES.
The method I mention is legitimate, works, and is perfectly legal for you to do.
Your PS3 is supposed to do everything, right? Take advantage of its built in ability to use a proxy server :).
With the guide I mentioned, you can get online with Firmware 3.15 perfectly legally :). So do it, and enjoy your PS3.

Apparently Sony Entertainment’s Rating on Better Business Bureau is now an F.
@jonabbey
Or people that work for Sony, Have lives and don’t bother to stay on a [DELETED] blog after midnight. We do have timezones you know [DELETED].
@ lochoko Good theory but no. PSP’s are not hackable anymore since Sony made the new ones ironclad. They use the same security that the PS3 uses. Any PSP from version 3 up is not hackable and never will be aside from custom firmware that does next to nothing.
EpicNotion….. more like EpicFail, lol you said swell!
Sony jerk offs don’t even have the 3.21 update on their website yet to download to a usb drive. wtf?
Die Sony Die
you can put android os on your psp
@ Team Cro, You bought a drive even knowing this update was going live? Only refund youll get is if you have you receipt and take it back to the place you bought it.
I also like how you figure that since you spent 90 for it …you deserve a 190 refund? Also PS3 isn’t valued at more than 299 now..so you wont get anything for that.
I paid 200 for my PS2, I saw them at gamestop for 50…SONY OWES ME 150 NOW.
You never rely on Best Buy employees, LOL! Many of them know less than you do when you walk the store, if you’ve done your research! I don’t know about Gamestop employees.
lochoko don’t go making random statements like they are facts.
Here is a fact, you have no idea that Other OS is the reason that no one has been able to hack the ps3 yet.
so who all is installing the cfw for the ps3, once its released from geohot?
I AM!
lol so much nerd rage here. i love it
mk something to keep into mind. for those of you waiting for this so called cfw from geohotz.
1. is you will need to open your ps3 and do some hardware modifications. and i really hope you are a good technician because one minor screw up and you won’t have a ps3.
2. the actual exploit itself. for moding. a minor screw up and you will have a 25pound paper weight.
so only time will tell as to if this update is real or not. so far it’s past 8am jst and no update was released.
and for you guys out there saying “call this studio call it tell em” won’t work anyone in the industry knows for a fact that deving games for the ps3 or any game system don’t really care aslong as they get the game done and sent out to get their money.
as for legality nothing is illegal for if this update to being possible you agreed to the TOS and the EULA when you made your PSN and decided to use the playstation console, so nothing within the rights given to you and the console if and can be modified by the developers of the system, in other words you agree to use the system and have it under the sony name you agree to everything they can and probably will do to the system.
i was waithing 4 months and even more! for the new version. when i saw version 3.21 i scream of exitement. but when i installed that version 3.21 i saw nothin. no new game entrance when you get the playstation 3 on, no high speed download , no nothing. us, people trying to get better versions and everithing, and soon come to this [DELETED]. i mean really, to this? this is my first time i see that they srewd up? seriously. how ashamed :(
as for my other fellow other os users one can only wait and see if this is true.
as for my other developers making games for the cell brand hard ware for installation onto the other os function it seems those games we wanted people to enjoy will not be able to do so unless it is written as a sony ps mini.
Team-CRO it’s not Sony’s fault you didn’t see the announcement made. Be more aware next time. I will laugh at you all who say you’re goin g to boycott sony of a feature that’s no longer worth it. Give up the whining and go to bed or move on with your lives for gods sake. Or Get a damn job and buy yourself a GOOD Computer.
i installed it.. and my question is are the icons bigger… i’m serious
that’s the beauty of the free market enterprise and capitalism.
Epic your the one that started the BS posting so if that is the deffinition of Common Sense that is you. BS Boy
Sony Boycott has begun as of today. Kiss the Sony Reader Sale Away as well as the Sony TV for my basement.either Panasonic or Samsung will get my business. I have been reading about the 3DTV.
If Sony has 3DTV don’t buy it as they might remove the 3D and you will only have 250.00 Glasses and a Blu-Ray player sounds fair to me epic says. 3D was a Bonus I will still kiss your butt and be your #1 Fan
@fantomphox
i dont care if i void a warranty or if i have to open up the ps3 ( did it on the psp )
and just to let you know, hes working on a software hack :P
Even though I never used this feature, I have to agree with the 90% of posters before me.
This is one of the lamest moves I’ve seen you pull Sony.
Seriously Sony. Wow
i installed it.. and my question is are the icons bigger… i’m serious
nerdragequit your right, ill just drop this crap from the second floor of my apartment, i will still sell the games and accesories do,,,
ooh guess what i just did, bye bye sony
I hope everyone who uses CFW if it’s ever released on the Ps3. Has the PS3 blow up in their face when they try to solder or open that sheet. Let’s just hope some of you are smart enough to have it turned on while you do it. Saves people with Brains to have to read this Mind Numbing Bullcrap you noobs call reason.
I wonder whether Sony expected this sort of backlash — enormous threads here and on the forum, articles on gaming and even general news sites, and a bunch of unhappy customers. Time will tell whether things will simmer down or boil over; I’m hoping for the latter.
Sure, the class-action suit may merely result in a coupon or something similar (“Hey, here, have a $20 voucher for the online store that you can’t access anymore!”) but it’s the principle that counts.
You know honestly thats my biggest thing. People are trying to justify this by saying they bought a ps3 for 600 to use as a computer. Did you…not research it before you bought it? I mean E Machines is considered a computer too…but do they work well? No. They are crap.
@no1warr1or
yeah aslong as you have the hardware mod the software will work. have you even took the time as to read the how-it-works. so far you havn’t another noob w/o a brain before commenting.
@4392/Legendary Phoenix You apparently didn’t bother to read that then, did you. The people who do the actual work, homebrew enthusiasts, had no need or intrest in hacking the PS3’s firmware because they did not need to hack the firmware to run their own code. OtherOS was there to let them code for the PS3/Cell processor without any modifications necessary. Now that it’s no longer there, if they want to continue using their system, they’ll need a custom firmware so that they can run unsigned code. This will either be similar to the PSP’s current CFW or they’ll just re-enable OtherOS. Either way, the hackers /will/ win this one. Once the real hackers get CFW working on the PS3, it will only be a matter of time before pirates steal their code and make it work for their less than savory desires.
@EpicNotion Funny you should say that. The PSP Go currently has an exploit that allows unsigned code to run. It’s on all the main PSP homebrew sites.
@fantomphox
why dont you read his blog and his twitter, dumbass
