The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

IF THIS UPDATE IS STILL RELEASED AND LINUX IS REMOVED I MIGHT HAVE TO MOVE TO XBOX BECAUSE AT LEAST THEY DO NOT REMOVE FEATURES THEY ALREADY HAD, AND IF THEY DO THEN THEY BRING IT BAK AND MAKE IT EVEN BETTER E.G. THEIR DASHBOARD
THIS BETTTTTER BE A FLIPPPING APRIL FOOOL JOKE.OR THEY BETTTTER GIVE US SOMETHING IN THE UPDATE THAT WILL BAFFEL US(FOR THE GOOOD)
Please don’t spam the board with talk of the other systems. The last thing anybody wants is the topic to be locked.
Please make your concern and voice be heard. But you can do it with out spamming.
i have just noticed some thing previous updates (2.70 2.80 3.00 3.10 3.15) have been announced by eric lempel and this one (only this one) was announced by patrick seybold, maybe this is a april fools joke
@gamesadict89 :
It was an epic joke ?
It could have been a joke if it was something funny. But it’s not the case.
Anyway, it’s a joke which cost them hundreds of customers.
Tired of their lies …
Goodbye SONY
@phantom Then why don’t you just go out and buy an Xbox right now? You are getting as annoying as those kids on XBL. And FYI, the PS3 has been beating the 360 on worldwide weekly sales since the slim was released.
PSN is better off without kids like you.
no doubt, i am upset as anyone else since i own 4 ps3 phats that i use to render animation AND game AND watch movies AND stream media
but don’t type all in capslocks geez

it’s a known fact that plenty of uk users post on the u.s blog. they’re very european like that.

@lostinplainsight
Sorry but this blog is more exciting there’s more talk of taking it to court, class actions and what not. LOL
Apparently some one has phoned the UK tech support guys and they are totally bemused by this update.
Seriously? Sony can you please stop removing features from the ps3? I mean, first ps2 emulation and now other OS. What kind of business strategy is this!
Guys, I am starting to think they will – at least – postpone this stupid update.
Google “ps3 update linux 3.21” and you will see like 780.000 results!!
Every site related to gaming or IT is reporting this update as a bad move. At least Sony can do the April fools excuse later :-P
I still get surprised seeing so many incompetent managers and directors are out there!!
Joke or not (and most of us are sure that it is NOT) Sony is losing customers. Even if they cancel this downgrade.
troll: “well boo hoo. like they are gonna miss ur dollarz HAHAHAHAAA”
I’ll reserve my judgment until tomorrow when April 1st in Japan is over. Who knows; they could say they are taking a key feature away but really could be ADDING some neat features. If they do remove Linux, they may be adding features from it such as firefox, a Word-like feature, or maybe even cross-game chat like most are considering. The numbering went from 3.15 to 3.21, perhaps meaning they are doing one large update (+0.5) and one lower one (+0.1). They haven’t had a firmware update in a long time so look at it this way. Anyway, happy April Fools Day to anyone who is into that sort of thing…
@3815
yo dude shut ur f***** mouth ur da only lil kid here u clearly don’t understand what sony is about to do
@ryanrossiter Thank you! That’s what I have been saying for the last 2 days and everyone just ignores that.
This is an epic joke because of it’s proportion, millions of users raging because of an update that is yet to come out.
@3815
don’t eva come wid dat krud like you kno who i be.u dumb dik kno who ur tlkin bout
Something else I should mention. It’s been months since the last update and all we are getting is a feature taken away when there is a long list of improvements you could be making. Let’s start with cross game chat (for free, not a premium service), a better web browser, in-game music. The PS3 is the most capable game system on the market, but unfortunately, that power is not taken advantage of by Sony. BOO!!!
A known fact? Really? Well it is news to me. Not saying they aren’t welcome or anything. Would just think they would rather complain on their own blog.

I think your PS3 has been hacked your keyboard is not working properly.
One possibility…It doesn’t get them out of the water since it requires an additional purchase on the user’s end, but can I remove the PS3 hard drive prior to upgrading the firmware and copy it to another hard drive?
I could then switch hard drives between Linux and using it for games. Best of both worlds, but it would require purchasing a new hard drive…
@phantom I am well aware of what Sony are doing. From what I have read, you are the one needing your facts checked.
http://www.jp.playstation.com/ps3/update/ this came from the jap website
I think it would a first time that April Fool’s day was done ahead of time! Good job Sony!
Well Put Money_JT
I bought this system to use the other operating option. I run ydl and most of my work is done on the ps3. Of my whole usage of the ps3, the Linux is used about 60 percent of the time. After my house burned down I didn’t have the money to buy a DVD player, blu Ray, games system and a computer; so I bought the ps3 because it does EVERYTHING!!!
They sold us a system that does “Everthing” not a system that does everything for a while but then only does somethings.
If this is not a joke I will be filing a lawsuit next week. I will be filing In small claims court and I suggest others that are in my boat do the same in your area.
For those who just use it as a gaming system it doesn’t matter; however, there’s a lot of us who looked at all the features before choosing a ps3.
I have contacted Sony corporate and await a response.
as of a min ago there is still no upadte in japan where it is april 1st
3828 – No you cannot. The firmware is not on the harddrive – you cannot just exchange them.
STILL no responses from neither the poster of this blog or anyone else. lol they’re too pu*** to respond.
What kind of joke infuriates customers? What kind of move is that? If it’s a joke then I question Sony’s judgement even more! Then the support says it’s NOT a joke according to some posters here.
WHY would this be an April Fool’s joke? Posted days early?
WHAT would Sony gain? They’ve gotten bad publicity, fans up in arms, complaints filed with various state/federal agencies, and a general amount of badwill that no company would want.
A “corporate” April Fool’s joke would be– “Hey, watch this space for a MEGATON new announcement!” and then have it be Kevin Butler and keyboard cat have met up to play MAG against each other.
A corporate April Fool’s joke doesn’t involve letting bad publicity stew for 3 days while people get more and more upset.
That said, it’s fully possible someone at Sony has come to their senses and decided to pull this update and re-examine what’s going on. Because if you think it’s bad now, imagine what happens when this update goes live and people who DO run Linux lose data– how many PS3 owners do you really think read this blog or keep up that closely with future firmware news? There WILL be data loss on this one and it WILL get nasty at that point.
Indeed sickcivic, 18 hours before April 1 is gone, still.
Yes you can as I replaced a new drive and it upgraded me to 3.15 that I downloaded. So it’s stored on the hard drive and not the system.
Kazper-DK | March 31st, 2010 at 2:19 pm
3828 – No you cannot. The firmware is not on the harddrive – you cannot just exchange them.
why are some of worried about this update sony said you dont have to upgrade your system if you use the os feature
3838 – No. On the slim it’s on the harddrive – on the Phat it’s in flash-ram. I KNOW this. I HAVE tested it.
I think the “April Fools” thing is really just a contingency excuse for Sony if they decide to scrap/postpone this update. They may have been testing the waters with the announcement to measure user feedback. If there’s enough negativity out there, Sony can just say “April Fools! We were NEVER going to do that to you guys!”
um guys something is definitely fishy as it is clearly state that the update will go live April 1 jst. That just so happens to have passed over 5 hrs ago. anyone tried updating their system since noon today????
improperlyaged> It can go live at any time during April 1st. It’s not even April 1st yet except in Japan where it’s far from over yet.
@TEAM-CRO the fermwere is stored on the ps3 as @kazper-DK said
You can get the firmware version by this link :
http : //feu01 .ps3 .update .playstation .net/update/ps3/list/jp/ps3-updatelist.txt
i also whent to the uk website theres said april 1st but not JST
makes me wounder whos gonna get the last laugh, in the uk its about 9pm so……. make ur own comclustions but i think is fishy
@3840 Ok thanks, saves me from having to test it. Disappointing, though. Maybe we’ll have to figure out how to bypass that flash chip to something a little more flexible since Sony is forcing this on us now.
It is NOT an April fools Joke!
I called Sony customer Service – it is unfortunately very real..
:(
welcome to the discussion superdew. “why are some of worried about this update sony said you dont have to upgrade your system if you use the os feature”
In case you haven’t read this whole blog, or even the title, by not updating we cannot play newer blu-ray disks or games that require this downgrade. So we lose advertised functionality. If we don’t upgrade we lose Other OS which was also part of the PS3’s functionality (it was on the box and manual if you have one of these “fat” PS3s)
Kazper The blog post clearly states it will come out April 1 JST (Japan). 18 hours left before the day is over
It doesn’t go live unti 20:10 1st April, it says that time at the top of this page.
It’s currently 06:27 there’s still 14 hours to go.
i have tried to update 2 times and it was a big no go for me
I know a lot of people will hate this but think about it the xbox is HACKED and microsoft dont really care but Sony ps3 got a little hack which does nothing really and sony took action and will remove the feature its actually a good thing because its will stop idiots like geohot hacking the ps3 again and what about microsoft “Oh we have change a chip to detect modders” hackers can easily get around that so think about it and dont go looply lo
@ MrCrAzyFAcE
But that’s one problem, they DIDN’T list anything but REMOVAL and crippling. I asked that earlier, what are they adding. No answer from anyone. You’d think with all the negative posts here and around the net, someone from Sony would post that they’re going to ADD something nice in return.
It’s not fishy.
They one more time lie. They try to launch the update, and as already said, keep as excuse ‘Happy Fools Day’ …
And, don’t expect any explanations/apologies from them.
Let the Japanese get out of bed before you start thinking it’s BS.
@maninashed april 1st jst (japan standard time)
No I don’t think so as it asked me for the firmware as my router wasn’t online so I had to insert it via the memory stick as it was a brand new formated drive. why ask for the firmware if it has it on the PS3?
Try it and you will see as you need the ps3updat.pup file. so if you have 3.15 it will install 3.15 to your system.
That is what I saw when I installed a new drive.
