The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

You know, I am sincerely hoping this gets hacked soon so that one can still use Other OS while installing the new update. It would make Sony look even worse than it is right now. ie. Instead of only being a hole, it’s also being incompetent.
@GreatTeacherDebo
LMAO
<—- Going to check media collection now.
Anyways, I wonder what would the users who didn’t know this think when they realized they are locked out of their data?
Interesting thought, but it’s April 1 in Japan right now. Has this update gone live yet, does anyone know?
No idea, I just hope Sony realized that they are having a Death Metallic on their hands, and halted themselves in their tracks.
I disconnected the network cable just in case I pressed anything by accident.
I am boycotting Sony if this patch does go live.
Don’t think so for I have not seen any news reports about violence and chaos ensuing at Sony HQ.
You know..I would almost be willing to go along with this if it’s not a joke,just to have 3D support now!!!!!!Having to wait months for 3D support just because Sony is behind the 8 ball in getting a 3D capable TV to market in the US is stupid on it’s own merit.
BUT THIS……………This is a very stupid move ………..Every hacker will be crawling out of the woodwork now, if this isn’t a joke.
I hope (JST) means Jokers Standard Time.
I just submitted news tips to CNN and FOXnews.
F you Sony, you will not do this without anyone but us knowing.
For the last time, it’s not a joke…call Sony yourself.
But there’s a way out for them. They can say April’s Fool now, and say this is a joke, and all will be forgiven. If not, well…… Let’s just say the backlash of this is going to be bigger than some of the biggest entertainment industry scandal that has happened recently, as well as getting every hacker on Sony’s tail.
So what next? Remove the PS2 backwards compatibility? Most of the people with the earlier models payed more and have probably bought more games. I don`t use the functionality but its not good that features that were advertised will be removed. I understand that Sony needs to fix the security breach but this is hurting more legitimate users than hackers.
If this update go live I only hope that this F**** S***(or [Deleted][Deleted] ^_^) explode in Sony’s face.
I will never pirate any PS3 game, but, if this go live, and the PS3 is totally hacked I will, for sure, I will.
P.S: If this doesn’t go live and the PS3 is hacked I won’t pirate any PS3 game… I swear it
stupid sonyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
I want my money !!!
All my life I was faithful to you and now you pay me well!

I don’t like the fact that my posts without urls’ or links are now always: Your comment is awaiting moderation.

Sony: Censor him He’s making a valid point. Damnit man we need more trolls to distract them.
Note to Sony, Consumers are like Raptors we’re constantly learning.
I also want your money!!!!!! :p
@3482
I totally agree. Why is the first option on every menu the greaking playstation store?? This is my console SONY, not yours. I do not want to see you advertised [DELETED] anywhere on my system. If I want to go to the PS Store and buy something, I will. Until then, I want to see nothing about it.

Okay this is the third attempt at posting this. The other two will never be moderated so I have fixed it.

@coreyfarkas
Yeah, I too am being C***Blocked at almost every other post.
Japanese consumer care and ethics,
I’m loving them
Not that I’m comfortable with the idea of removing a feature post-sale, but I have to wonder how many of those posters riled up are genuinely affected. I simply don’t buy that anyone actually used Linux for general purpose computing on their PS3’s, which seems to be the tone gernally. It’s incredibly slow and virtually useless.
The ones who are using it for studies or whatnot are the ones who are getting the shaft; few or otherwise, a single affected person is one too many.
Personally, I’m just worried that this might set a precedent that may lead other companies to take out feature post-sale for whatever reasons. In this case, as soon as the media gave attention to Hotz and his half baked hack, this was inevitable. What’s mind boggling is that he’s still getting some press.
O wait, usually Japanese Consumer Care is usually Fine, it’s only whis beloved company… SONY [Autocensored] YOU!
you people are the worst bunch of butt hurt crybabies i’ve ever seen.just like when all the fat ps3’s had a 1 day glitch bfd.sony said it would be ok in 24 hours and it was.then everybody was saying how happy they were after the problem was fixed.it’s a gaming console & a great one.mines 3years old & still runs great.so please at leaste wait & see before u flip out.or just go away & get a 360.mabye u should buy 2 chances are 1 will burn up.
@3489 Gregstone – I guess you already have a 3D TV and a 3D blu-Ray disc?
Well that’s really the point. It doesn’t REALLY matter if you were using it or not. It just doesn’t matter. This should absolutely be fought in every way possible. Let this kind of thing happen just once, and it opens up the floodgates.
@ Lain_OTN
Racism. It’s just too cool to not to have some

Is this some kind of sick joke? :-///
I hope this is an april fools joke, or else I want my money back!
SONY, my PS3 connect to an electric outlet at 220V please remove the feature of wall plug to 110V/220V because of security concerns.
@ FBI_PLAY3
We’ve been at 3.15 for months, and the slim doesn’t even have the option. This just marks the end of Sony’s push to foster Cell developers, which was the intention from the get go.

NEVER FORGIVE
Call, e-mail, whatever. Do what you have to do to be heard.
This isn’t right . . .
This is straight up theft.
what if next week hacker discover a way to bypass the ps3 security via BLU RAY player?? ARE YOU going to remove that too???
I’m using ubuntu on my ps3 and I’m not hacking it nor I want to!!
I will ask my money back, you cannot remove a fature you promoted and WE paid for after the item is sold!
This really takes the piss. I’ve got a site at ps3cfw.com where I have updates on Geohot and the work he’s doing but there’s a discussion forum at ps3cfw.com/forum you can use. Cheers.
sony you suck i hope this is just a joke because the playstation 3 is the ONLY console i know of that has lost features as it has got older. this is like “quote”
“Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether.”
and “quote”
“Hey Sony, considering you are disabling half of my product (It was explicitly sold with labeling ON THE BOX that states it supports other OS installations) – Can I get half my money back?” ,and the move is “like selling someone a table, and then breaking 2 of the legs off.”
also i hope this move by sony is illegal, i smell a lawsuit…….
