PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update

7,437 0

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

  • @flowjo it seems you really don’t know what everybody is talking about… why don’t you go and lick more of sony’s @ss instead of posting here

  • @flowjo it will be futile

  • no, they aren’t moderating the word ‘word’

  • anyway people. i would say that the only way sony would make me upgrade is if they will add BC to my ps3. you know we could have get advantage of this and not upgrade until sony give us backward comp.

  • @sven_viking

    “word up” lol

    @flowjob69

Please read the entire post and you will see some fair and logical arguments on this discussion. (You’ll also see my thoughts on those dismissive of this community.) Frankly, some of us have rents to pay, tuition fees, mouths to feed, and the PS3 was an economic choice.

Some of us choose not to live in our parents’ basements and be belligerent with those in the world that do not share our views.

    @everyone

Whenever I discuss us as a community, I do not speak of the gamers, or the hackers, or geeks. I am talking about the Sony consumers, who have invested in a CE product which should be as intact as when we purchased it.

I do not use any pirated games, it hurts that industry and the friends that I have in it.

  • why do they even bother moderating this topic, its not like they care what we are saying

  • ive seen linux run on ps3 its crap ive seen folding at home calculated waay faster with a 8800 gt. yes there is some really cool things being done with a ps3 and its great buts its a tiny tiny minority, sony still gives you the option of not upgrading to continue whatever research your trying on the ps3 but you need to look at the bigger picture, there is lots of potential for security problems and piracy.

geohot already told everyone not to update and he was running software that was supposedly running ps2 games and was able to run pirated software, this is sonys way of making sure the system doesnt turn into all the past systems i really cant blame them for it

  • “geohot … was running software that was supposedly running ps2 games and was able to run pirated software”

Source? As far as I know this is a complete fabrication.

  • @ flowjo yeah and what let you think r.e.m.o.v.i.n.g thinks is the solution. i bet you hackers will find another way of hack the ps3 when that happen sony will r.e.m.o.v.e something else, something that maybe you would be hurt too

  • btw…the flowjob thing was a typo…not an insult…sorry….kinda funny though…lol

  • P.S. — Wow, “geohot” is no longer a b.ann.ed word.

  • @flowjo69
Your response is common, though I don’t know why you’re bothering if you don’t care, unless you’re trolling…

For those of us who had this feature, we could have purchased the next latest and greatest console (i.e. PS4) and used our old PS3 as something else (media server, game server, file server, etc). Now, most of us will either just get rid of it, place it in the closet, or strip it apart.

I don’t know why I even bother, Sony doesn’t care… I’m even regretting voicing my opinion because of the fear that Sony will now re.move other features, or start charging for PSN.

  • There was so much stuff that got through the sift that wasn’t as appropriate and the most ridiculous things were “moderated”.

It almost seems that at the end of day, the filters exist to make us look irrational rather than illustrating our legitimate concern.

  • he hacked the ps3

there is lots about it and he hacked the iphone before it so it could be used with any client , these people have nothing better to do they are very smart of course but it is illegal and can make a company like sony lose hundreds of millions of dollars therefore declining an already unstable economy , so many entertainment outlets are feeling the effects of piracy i personally dont do it , and i make peanuts where i work.

if they feel removing a potentially harmful function why the hell not , people can be writing viruses , worms , malware anything , also the internet browser on ps3 isnt the most secure browser ive used , why not keep your main customers safe.

  • @lil_Hamlet
You never know, that may be it. T.yping li.ke thi.s and having to po.st multiple variations on the same m.essage, etc., does look a bit stupid.

  • you folks who, like me, updated due to duress (being threatened to not be able to play our games/blu-rays), are you still having problems playing anything on PSN? I thought updating was required to ALLOW you to use PSN?

(yes I’m wordy…obviously not on twitter)

  • @lil_hamlet
Yes, you’re l.ocked out of PSN if you don’t up.date. Some people are using temporary wor.karounds (search Google).

  • (Oops, sorry — misunderstood).

  • @sven_viking

No…I did update and was booted off of puzzle fighter yesterday a few times. (never got a game in)

Just curious if actually updating created problems for anyone else on PSN

  • @sven

im curious to know what your doing with the other os option , are you running some type of server or application that you created?

do you play any games on it?

  • @flowjo69
I actually answered your first question on the previous page. In answer to your second question: I did play a few open-source Linux games on there, but not regularly.

  • I’m truly irritated, annoyed and sad by this update. I have no reason to update to get something removed. It just doesn’t make sense, even a 12 year old kid would question such a move from sony. We always thought we’d get something MORE instead of less. Besides I paid for such a feature to be able to use with my phat ps3

“It only does everything” yeah…. more like “It only removes everything”

Can you at least give us the option to NOT update this firmwire and somehow still use PSN? (I know I’m asking the impossible here)

  • I blame Sony for all arguments on here. They have divided their community into otherOS supporters and people concerned with security.
Way to go Sony, pull out a stupid move which makes you look stupid, and gets people bickering.
If Sony had the decency to respond, everyone would stop arguing, but alas, no, Sony doesn’t feel that its customers deserve to be treated like human beings.

  • Q: Whats the difference between a Unicorn, and Sony responding to this issue?

A: Your more likely to see a Unicorn.

  • So I’m not to impressed with this move. However you don’t realy give me a choice here either I do it or all my online games don’t work soooo…. However I have to think there is a way we can have both have both? like your SONY here your the guys for this stuff. no more taking stuff away OK. Its just like the ps2 when it came out and was supposed to do all kind of stuff, and never did, this will be remembered as the one that started out dooing all the stuff they said it would and then got pulled apart piece by piece. Sorry its just true.
    Thnx.
    Serv.

  • Well, that was interesting…my letter to SCEA was fine with the guy that answered it, but not with the filters here.

NO user ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD deserves to be treated with disdain by ANY COMPANY with which they do business, regardless of said user’s feelings toward the company or its products. Yet, that’s exactly what’s going on with the powers at SCE and whatever’s scanning this thread for dissenting views and blotting them out. The entire purpose of any thread in a blog is to elicit feedback. You’ve got it all here, gents–or at least what your staff wants the public to see.

The bulk of respondents aren’t happy. They feel pressured into doing things they can’t fathom. And all you do is let ’em explode. Sheez!

  • @Swordzmanp236

Hey man, you are totally right, I can’t even post a comment with the sole word “yes” because my other account is censored. Way to go Zony

  • Hey thanks for reminding me of the problems of the PS2, great system, mostly, (Disc Read Error…). But I bought the expensive hard drive for the system, yeah the Sony brand one, with the impression it was going expand the functionality of the PS2. Dumped all that money in there, and got my use out of it for FF XI, but I remember reading about all the things it was gonna do, and they never even supported it enough to run your game saves off of it instead of the memory card…

  • wow they’re deletin.g alot of p.osts

for anyone on the fence on whether they should update or not, u can connect to psn while still using 3.15

    goog.le is your friend :)

  • would ya’ll like a little cheese with ya’lls whine. who cares, some of ya’ll have been posting for days. U kick ass sony.

  • “who cares, some of ya’ll have been posting for days.”

Looks like you just answered your own question.

  • Sad people are blindly supporting this. I don’t use OtherOS personally, but you have millions of people who do use it for their everyday need. Some bought it because they knew what the PS3 was capable of and decided it would be a better investment than to buy a new PC when everything they needed is right on the PS3.

I believe Sony robbed people of this feature while literally giving them no choice as to update. Especially if someone put so much money into PSN through games, movies, etc. I enjoyed Sony through the course of my life because they weren’t Microsoft. Now sitting here with Generation Casual, it’s hard to tell the difference between the two.

    It’s quite disgusting.

  • It’s definitely hard for me to defend the PS3 from the xbox fanboys. I used to enjoy doing so, but I don’t have the heart for it after this Sony update. Don’t get me wrong. I still enjoy using the PS3. I’m just not fantastically excited about it any more. If an xbox fanboy started ragging on PS3 shortcomings, I’d probably agree with them now.

  • This whole situation just makes me think about the movie Robots.

  • there’s no way sony can ignore this issue with almost 7000 posts on this blog (plus who knows how many posts were deleted) along with 2000 posts on the EU blog… there’s just no way

  • @Fox:

To quote Sir Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi:

“I sense a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.”

    Cue the Imperial March.

  • @FoX_Hound

To address your question. Not only have they d.eleted a lot of comments but also a lot of them are there “awaiting m.oder.ation” and we all know they wont even accept the comments to show up. Others, like myself have been rejected from even doing a post saying the word “yes” because no matter what I write, my comment was completely censored. Yet, we are still finding our way to show our ang.er on this matter. Ill bet we will reach 10k and no single comment from Zony

  • The problem is that pr.ox.y bypass only works for PSN connection. This will not work for future games or films that revoke 3.15 and below keys

P.S: SONY just banned my old account for posting links about the up(down)grade… They are in their right to do so, but it’s a shame and unethical, but we already know how SONY plays this days…

  • Yeah I thought so. Already making other plans. I’ll be buying DVD’s again for a while or buying a new blu-ray player. As for games there’s alternatives there too of course. It’s sad as ps3 was good and I was a big sony supporter. All things come to an end though.

  • They can take our lives but they’ll never take OUR OTHER OS.

    Oh S**t, they do.

  • Good morning all.

…Wow, SONY still hasn’t come up with something to say?

I believe our 6423 posts finally have them staggered! Quickly! Paradigm shift and go for their weak spot!

…On a side note, why haven’t some of my posts shown up?

  • Should SONY, as a compensation, give an installer for Linux, for thoses of us who want to use Linux, which deletes totally the GameOS and give full Linux access to our hardware ?

  • everyone should support who is not updating, we are trying to show sony that they cannot remove features and expect us to just shut up like sheeps. Doesn’t matter what feature it is.

we all are on the same side, the customer side.

  • Last Sony product I ever bought – Not only have I lost my linux partition but there does not seem to be any way of reclaiming my linux space and assigning it back to the PS3 without wiping all the games and save data. I paid extra for the fact that I could run linux and now I will have to go and buy a seperate PC – only that I will not be able to get one with Cell :(

  • @6415
    Watch them… :-)

  • the_lone_wolf_42

Sony, by deleting legit comments, your just making more people angrier. What are you thinking!?
