The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

In order to have been able to use the system upon first purchase when it was new in the box and turned on for the first time the eula had to be accected in order for it to be used you also had to accect a tos when you created your psn account. if you didn’t accecpt the eula when you first got the system you aren’t suppose to be using the system and it should have been returned to the store you got it from and telling them you didn’t want to accecpt the eula.

SOrry Tried installing my old PS3 HD with 3.15 and it needs the 3.21 update to get the old hd running.
Sony also claims you can’t downgrade the firmware.
This is a terrible move. What’s next? Make us pay for PSN? Take away backwards compatibility on my launch 60gb system? There are reasons why I spent my money on the PS3 instead of the other system, but if I knew Sony was going to be pulling shady tactics like this one then I wouldn’t have bought the system. What the heck Sony? Seriously?
I love tinkering with linux builds and running various services when I’m not gaming. That’s what made the PS3 so awesome. You could play games, watch movies, contribute to folding, and run linux. It was a total entertainment system. Now it isn’t. And yeah, only the people that are fully law abiding are the ones that suffer. Thanks a lot for nothing.

The complaint is essentially a misrepresentation. Since they sold the pre-2009 units with the otherOS support and are now removing it but offer owners of these systems no alternative and apply undue influence to the extent that without updating, you no longer have access to PSN which is required by many games and also suggest that newer games may not work without the firmware update.

1) google “tutorial bypass ps3 fw update”
2) follow instructions
3) DO NOT UPDATE
4) enjoy existing functionality

I honestly deep down hope this is some elaborate well thought out April Fools joke. They could of put on a firmware that temporarily took away the Other/OS for 24 hour period. These tools and methods are around for a while – mostly used by people afraid to update and get bricked – and very soon now everyone will know ho to do also.

Don’t waste your time here. Go online with your old firmware and be happy. Enjoy for now, because they will have to release a version 3.22 in a matter of days or even will have to change the whole way how the system is connected.

Yeah, I heard there are a lot of repeat posters, but I didn’t sift through 5,000 or so to do an exact count nor am I going to sift through the list to keep track of who has posted X number amount of times.
I agree with improperlyaged knowing that many users are upset about this. There are many other mediums other than the Playstation Blog where users are complaining as well.

I never used the Other OS feature, so I could really care less anyways. I mean, 90% of people out there who use their PS3’s don’t even know the feature exists, so they won’t be affected at all. I think that a lot of people are just complaining to complain.

It’s because no other device has ever lost features like the PS3 has over its operational lifetime. It was one thing when they decided not to support certain features in later models it is another thing entirely to remove existing features from the older models. Legal doesn’t mean ethical or right. I don’t care if they have a golden contract signed in my blood that says they can do this it is still just plain dirty dealing with the customer. Anyone who doesn’t think it’s wrong well I’ve got a few computers I would love to sell you but, I reserve the right to take away your mobo and HDD at a later date. I have to make up the money I lost on my system somehow.

You really are a tool if you think Sony have thought this out one bit. It’s a knee jerk reaction by Sony executives, who never thought about any of it. The going online without updating has been around for almost 2 years that I know of. Trust me Sony are in a PR nightmare!!!
