Latest info on PlayStation Network Status

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
    trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please continue to check either the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

  • That’s all you have? We could have told you that. Come on we need some hope. My friend is going through withdrawals from no demon’s souls

  • As much I would like to see some feedback (to comments) from Sony, I am happily assuming that they have put all of their attention towards a fix instead of reading our complaints. Although I would like to mention that relative to the PS3’s launch date, this would be their leap year….
“Forget Y2K this is the ApocalyPS3”

  • I can’t take this anymore!!

  • @ 300 Lance_Akiro
lol, you have a good point Sir.

  • dear playstation

will we be able to download the fix on the ps3 or your website?

  • I read that Sony just recommended for all PS3’s to stay off the PSN. Should i not use netflix streaming on my PS3 either?

  • @Prophetic & everyone else who apparently can’t read:
Don’t turn your system on, don’t play blu-rays, don’t use netflix, DON’T DO ANYTHING!!!
    Wow already.

  • They should have one guy, an intern probably, go around checking the status to see how it’s coming along and tell us. We better get some reprimands or something to apologize. Seriously, not a word except there is a problem and slims are ok and then people go hours without many games.
They better make this the year of PlayStation updates as well as PlayStation games, already great titles out this year. But to make it up they need to show true dedication. I don’t think I can truly trust Sony anymore.

  • I just find it strange that this is all happening when the PS site has a totoally new UI.. I just hope that this is all fixed by the time I get home from work.. fingers x’d

  • lol @ 308
Yea I’ll do it if they are short on interns geeze, its simple.

  • Just when Sony was about to truly gain momentum this console generation, they allow a fiasco like this to occur. Seems to me they have really bruised the faith many had in the quality of the Playstation brand. How can I, as a Playstation enthusiast, effectively justify a debacle such as this to someone on the fence about joining the PS3 family? (Yes, I’ve convinced 5 other people to buy a Playstation 3 and am courting a few othees). How can I truthfully say something like this won’t happen again. More importantly, can you even guarantee it won’t?

  • It can’t be a coincidence that the problem happened on Feb. 28th. As a professional software developer (MCPD) I would start with that. I am wondering if there is a problem with their leap year logic in their calendar. Maybe it is assuming a leap year every other year instead of every four. I would bet it is related to this issue.

  • As long as it’s fixed by next Tuesday for FFXIII I’ll be a happy gamer.

  • If I even get told I need to send my Playstation into Sony for servicing I am immediately walking out the door and buying a Xbox. All because someone overlooked a damn calendar and doesn’t have a clue how to count by 4’s for a leap year.

  • im about 2 get a xbox 360 i bet this will be on going issue sucks for playstation [DELETED] i wanna play mag

  • You hope to resolve it in 24 hours? Meaning you’re just going to wait until the clock corrects itself. You might considering actually fixing this. Other companies used the same clock as you and they patched it.

  • @30

Why should “we” get anything free? You didn’t loose anything.

  • Kinda strange how it doesn’t effect “all” fat ps3’s though.

I have 3 ps3’s in my house for my sons and I to play MAG on together.

Two of them are the 80 gig that I bought 13 months ago and are identical and the other is the slim model that I bought last month.

Out of the 3 systems only one of the fat ones isn’t working while the one that is just like it and the slim are working fine.

    Kinda strange IMO

  • Um, did Sony really think it would be ok to just post this and then they’d be good for the rest of the day as far as keeping us in the loop? How about an update?

  • Dear Sony,
I already knew what you guys have stated!

  • @97… I had to pay a lot more than 600 considering my blu ray drive broke 10 days before my warranty was up. They sent me a refurbished ps3, which then broke (same issue) 3 months after i received it. Then I had to pay $175 for a new drive. Trust me, the costs were high. Sega Saturn cost $600 when that first came out, and both my Saturns still work perfectly…

  • We should make this a national ps3 holiday and call it PS3 withdrawal day XD

  • What bothers me the most is that Sony has invested so much time into firmware updates that incorporate lame features no one wants, yet when it comes to ensuring system stability, we just get an ‘Oops’ response.

    – “What’s New?” menu items to sell more stuff and appeal to Wii-types? Check.

    – More PlayStation Store icons everywhere to sell more stuff and appeal to Wii-types? Check.

    – Bigger, uglier onscreen fonts to appeal to Wii-types? Check.

    – New, sparkly–yet less dynamic–default theme to appeal to…I dunno, tween vampire junkies? Check.

    – Stable core systems, like date/time functionality. Nah…no biggie.

Just an overall lack of priorities, IMO.

  • Just checked my systems.

    1) slim works just fine

    2) fat style manufactured December 2008 CECHLo1 works fine

    3) fat style manufactured August 2008 CECHKo1 isn’t working

My personal guess is that only the fat ones made prior to December 2008 have issues.

  • can someone explain to me how a leap year works bc i have no clue what so eve.r

  • I am also not very pleased with this kind of news. To cut off access like this is un-heard of. This is a business and you closed your doors for a day? Thank god you are not writing POS software. Those retail stores would be calling and demanding compensation for the loss of revenue. How about your investors Sony. Are they happy that you dropped the ball on this one. Not good for sales. This should have been addressed in the 3.15 update that added the Minis.
No Nazi Zombies for me today, on my only day off this week. LAME… I am glad that my GOW III has not arrived. I just downloaded the Demo 2 days ago after pre-ordering my game and I Can’t play it now. What? Double LAME.
Please do not stick up for them. They anticipated this. This seems like a test of some kind on our humanity. LOL:)

  • Why would you hear this news and then go check your PS3 to see if it works right? Why, if you knew this would mess up your PS3, would you intentionally go and MESS UP YOUR PS3?

And it’s not a PSN thing. This will happen if you TURN ON your PS3. Why is this so hard for people to understand? Leave the damn things off people. lol…

  • The Earth completes a revolution around the sun every ~365.24 years, so to make up for lost time, they add a day (Feb. 29th) to the calendar every four years. Basic gist of it.

  • how about “we at sony will be sending new systems to those affected, sorry for the inconvenience.” otherwise this should be fixed pronto, i do not want to just be looking at my God of war 3 ultimate edition and FF13 boxes til this crap gets fixed.

  • bullsh.t

This better be fixed by tomorrow, I have a shiny nice XBOX sitting in the room that would like a copy of BFBC2 tomorrow! :)

  • @324 whitwhit:

    Seriously?

  • Oh my…Battlefield is released tomorrow. Hope it’s fixed =)

  • @326, This happened to me way before Sony came to blog about it. Yes it is stupid for people to come here see what is going on a then turn on their PS3s! But I was not aware, and this happened to me around I would say 3-3:30..

  • @327

Days, I hope you mean, if it were years we would be getting dragged into the sun and would all be dead from heat and radiation.

  • So I watched a bluray this morning before I knew there was a problem and it played fine. After that I tried to play MLB 09 The Show (one last time b4 MLB 10 drops tomorrow) and the game wouldn’t load at all. After some hit & miss trying to load some other games I came online and read about this ridiculous debacle. I own a launch model (60 GB FAT). So are my saves & trophies going to be all messed up now?

  • @332

Of course I understand that, but I keep hearing people all over the net who were well aware of the news but decided to experiment. LOL I just don’t get it.

  • Hmm, can’t play my Borderlands DLC.
This is rather upsetting. Time to pick a new book to read, I suppose.

  • Thanks for updating us!

You guys being the first responders is fantastic and is a great model! Please continue to do this in the future if this kind of situation ever presents itself again.

Using the blog to allow us to follow the situation closely is greatly appreciated!

Looking forward to the next update on this situation!

  • @330 man im just trying to pass the time lol :D

  • @335 then those people are clearly stupid. If I knew about this before turning on my PS3 to play Heavy Rain, trust me I wouldn’t!!

  • So… like… we shouldn’t even turn on the PS3 AT ALL?
    Well that sucks.

  • @324 (who asked, “can someone explain to me how a leap year works bc i have no clue what so eve.r”)

    http://tinyurl.com/yg9kpmx

  • this kinda sucks cant play ps3 games for awhile only ps2s an ps1s

  • 1 hour to go to see if the PS3 fixes itself. I think compensation for this problem should be to give the affected PS3 owners a coupon for a free grand slam at Denny’s.

    There’s my idea, where’s yours?

  • Guys and gals go read book. Sad Part my 40gig ps3 died as of 2/26/10 at 10:40pm est time. She won’t boot up don’t need worry I got extra year from Sam’s club Warranty I got my UPS paper work just waiting for RMA paper work. Should come tomorrow. It so sad. I’m bored now lol.

  • @333

Yes, I meant days, of course. Sorry, typing too fast.

Not really sure what you mean about getting dragged into the sun though, we’d all be freezing cold if it took 365.24 years because of the distance we’d have to be from the Sun. Even pluto only takes about 250 Earth years to complete its orbit.

  • you can turn it on just shut off automatically sign in

  • Mmmm. Ok. Thanks, Jason.
Too bad I have homework, but I guess this works out perfectly. LOL.

  • @344

No. You can not turn it on. This is affecting people who aren;t signed in to PSN. Even if you don’t have internet, this might happen.
