As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

  • The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
  • When the user tries to sign in to the PlayStation Network, the following
message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been
signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
  • When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears
on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install
    trophies. Please exit your game.”
  • When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the
Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date
and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
  • Users are not able to play back certain rental video downloaded from the
PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please continue to check either the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

  • @191 rainbowhillbilly:

Hey thanks. If we can all take solace in one thing: As upset as we are, and as much venom as we like to throw around on message boards about our consoles…just imagine the earfuls that SCE is getting directly from game devs right about now, as the debug units they are using also have the same problem.

  • SONY just made a big post on TWITTER

  • epic, EPIC fail Sony.

  • Anyone here got any tips on how to have an actual conversation? I’m stumped what to do tonight now.

  • there wasnt any firmware and all the sudden there is a huge problem? what makes me puzzled why didnt this happen when 3.15 was live and those who updated did get it until now. that makes me confused.

  • So the way you reassure your customers is to tell them that the “new” version is fine…..

You guys suck….I will not run out and buy a slim like you guys want.

  • I thought I was unaffected but it turns out last night I was playing Heavy Rain on my BROTHER’s PS3 slim. After realizing such, testing of MY PS3 came to mind and indeed as if the different colored background from the month changing wasn’t enough the date/time was reverted to default. After trying to sign in and check trophies, the decision was I’m one of the unluckies who are plagued by this most random of error. But as you might have read, I still have my bro’s PS3 slim to play on… and there’s always Steam or the Tiger Woods Online beta… soooo addicting

  • @versa: GTA IV is a game which supports trophies and it works without being logged in. Perhaps you should take that remedial reading course.

Logic lesson: OR does not mean what you think it means. ANY apparently doesn’t mean what you think it does either.

You said “couldn’t play ANY downloaded OR trophy enabled games”. This suggests that neither downloaded nor trophy enabled games worked. Sorry, you are WRONG!!!

  • I understand there is a problem. I just don’t like how I’m not able to play offline games.

Hope there is a fix for this soon.

  • So many ignorant children here it seems, that have nothing better to do than whine and complain.

Seriously everyone needs to just grow up and wait. It isn’t like your constant childish tantrums are serving a purpose aside from annoying people.

  • @Nynja: you’re wrong. GTA IV plays just fine. Why not try it first…

  • Good thing I haven’t used my ps3 since the errors. Thanks for the update! :)

  • Its The Y2K Bug! its Happening!

  • Xbox Live had a similar problem and users received a free downloadable game (Undertow). Any chance SCEA would be willing to do the same for the PS3 faithful?

  • This sux for folks who don’t care about online gaming or Trophies. Thanks a lot Microsoft for bringing the era of Achievement/Trophy crap into the gaming world. Now systems need to be tied to online to function properly. This clock crap could have happened, but we would have still been able to play our offline games.

Oh well, time to read a book. I wish Lunar was out on PSP :)

  • I don’t know how helpful this information is, but I own one of the original 60 GB PS3s purchased at launch and it is also working just fine. When I sign in, the people online are all friends who own PS3 slims.

  • pretty lame stuff.

  • @warlock, seriously, selective reading is not working for you. nor is your selective editing. you ONCE AGAIN neglected to mention the part in which i said “I”. troll failed. both my reading and logic are quite sound. also, i don’t do selective reading/editing. you could play and mentioned ONE GAME as wroking. what about the others. oh yes, heavy rain was mentioned by you, as not working. have you tried any ps1 classics, have you tried any other trophy enabled games outside of those two. have you read any other reports on any other website/blog about the issue and saw how many other people are experiencing the except same issues. people are even now saying dlc enabled games are not working due to the dlc not working. but i am so sure you have all the answers for me and all the others with issues outside of playing gta4. why don’t you FIX THE PROBLEM FOR US ALL THEN SINCE YOU KNOW SO MUCH OF WHATS RIGHT AND WRONG. /rant end, troll ignored from this point on

  • Well to tell the truth for about a week there was problem with me and a couple of my friends just randomly signing out of the playstation network, But we were able to sign right back in no problem.

P.S. I don’t own the Slim models and i am doing fine! Woot! Go Me! LOL.. No Withdrawals over the next few days for me baby! YEAH!

  • Ok… two good questions. The data about trophies will be lost?

And… How can we fix the problem if we can not connect to psn?

  • aghhhh man sooo pissed off just bought darksiders and is dieing to play it but cant :'(

  • @LordSatori & Versa

Warlock obviously is being very ignorant (or possibly not very bright). I would just ignore any more comments from him/her since they clearly do not understand the severity of the problem and the various flavors of hardware having the issue.

Let them continue to play GTAIV against Sony’s recommendation and potentially corrupt their game or trophy data.

    Ignorance is bliss.

  • i’m not gonna complain about this, but I would like to know what will happen if this issue can not be fixed, what is sony/playstation willing to due to make it right…

Just because its down for a couple days isnt a big deal, but if its unrepairable and nothing can fix it, then something needs to happen to fix the human error put into they hardware…

  • Hey, uh, I’m just wondering…does this have any effect on PSPs too? (as they also connect to PSN)

  • @ 223 Insyt agreeing 100% give Sony some time before giving them down the road!

  • Come on Sony! Hurry up and fix your damn DRM! Remove it and I will be happy to be able to play my games again.

It’s obvious that with the date resetting back so far it triggered the DRM to lock us out of the GAMES I PAYED FOR LEGALLY!

  • I love how usual posts get at least 5 to 10 replies from Sony reps. There’s not one god damn Sony person on here telling us SOMETHING. If my game saves or trophies are going to be corrupted just for turning on my PS3 and trying to sign in then this is really poor of Sony. It’s nothin akin to the RRoD like people are saying and wanting to switch over (go ahead Jaspers are still gettin Red Ringed, 48% failure rate? WOW MS!) but it is a very serious issue when games can’t play offline single player. All of us are familiar with downtime online but OFFLINE as well? A little help here Sony. Billions of dollars backing the company, maybe tens of thousands of employees. Whittle that down to the PS division and I can imagine you have a sizeable chunk of people that could work on this and fix it well before any 24 hour mark, where’s the effort..

  • @nynja thats my now plan, as stated at the end of my last rant reply to the obviously trollish antics of snorlock. as he/she/it will now and forever be refered to by myself. after my woman went home last night i figured i’d finish out the kz2 2xXP weekend when i found this problem. it was also the day i planned ahead to back up my system. knew i shoulda done that when i woke up. now i guess i’m just gonna have to resume playing fallout on the pc until i can get back to playing on the ps3. and on that note, see you all later. hopefully on psn, if not, still ranting here at the very least.

  • This is the worst problem I can recal from any electronics device I have purchased. Not to mention the ps3 costs like 5x what most other devices costs… Now Sony barely communicates with their customers over the problem. MORE UPDATES. FIX THIS! SONY IS PATHETIC – I’ll just go play some Sony music CD’s full of ROOT KITS in the mean time. May as well fill my PC with bugs and virus’ while I wait for my PS3 to get fixed.

  • I started to get the “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)” message when I was downloading “Bass Pro Championships” from the store. I have the second generation of PS3 (with smaller chip, not the new slim version).

Sounds like some dev didn’t do his/her code regression testing homework…

  • @Pelt_Hunter

They are working on it. So let me ask you this, would you rather them stop working on the solution to give us an update? or FIXING THE PROBLEM?

You really seem to have no clue how hard it is to troubleshoot an issue like this, if you did you would likely be a bit more understanding, or not, you are likely one of the people I mentioned in an earlier post who have nothing better to do than complain.

  • Lets all be somewhat thankful this is happening now and not on the god of war release date. Sure its not ideal, but for all that Sony has done for us over the years I say there is some room for forgiveness.

  • @231 LegendaryPhoeix THANK YOU! They aren’t charging us to get online like other systems jesss I agree with you give Sony a chance here!

  • and for everyone wondering if this is the internal clock error or something else…

If u read about what was going on this week, they cut ram from PS3’s OS, and its supposed to help somewhat with game developement, i could see that as a bigger issue than the internal clock, as that wouldn’t cause too much of a fuss they couldn’t have fixed easily already, so as many good tech’s know, start with the physically and if you cant fix it there, jump to software…

  • Last night was quite funny.

me and a friend have our ps3 set up on the exact same router/network for the past week now. he owns a phat and I own a slim. last night he played and logged off to pick another person up and when he got back it wouldnt log in. looks to me like the slims are totally unaffected.

  • @234 my friends ps3 worked fine with the software update up until last night. it has to be the clock’s fault…

  • @236

Yea i understand that reasoning, but read the article i posted a link to, it shows how they stealthily changed firmware of the PS3…

  • @234 Insyt:

Well the hardware spec is the same, but Sony has reduced the memory footprint of the OS over the various firmware updates–but that is all probably a function of more efficient coding. Not sure how that would lead to the current clock-related issue.

  • i’m a depressed gamer!! HELP ME SONY!!!! lol!! i need to do the pump it taunt again in uncharted 2!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Listen, I’ll be the first to admit this is a REALLY embarassing situation for Sony to be dealing with right now.

The fact that non-slim models are being affected PLUS the fact that single player games cannot be played is a serious problem.

Sony has effectively bricked our systems…this is seriously intolerable to me.

I feel the need and right to voice my complaints because of the amount of money and time that I invest into Sony products. This is definitely a day all PlayStation fans will remember as a mark of shame on its brand name.

  • I’ve been checking periodically to check out the progress and to read the comments. As mad as everyone is we need to realize that this global issue will not be fixed in the “24 hour” period. Also I think the most problematic issue is the inability to play offline. Online issues are usually a pretty easy fix with firmware updates but an offline problem always points to hardware issue that may not be fixed by a firmware update. Even if a firmware update can fix the issue it doesn’t help if those with issues can’t log in. No one here has answer, just speculation. I think the issue for Sony is the fact that Slim model owners are starting to report problems also whiich means that it may not be just a calendar issue. everyone has a right to be upset but be constructive about it rather than demanding stuff and making stupid threats. Besides Sony is aware that they are facing a huge PR issue and the possibility of losing the momentum they have at this point.

  • @199 I have the same issue with a lot of my themes now showing as corrupt data. I knew something was up immediately when I turned on my PS3 and the flower theme wasn’t on my screen.

I’m sure these corrupted files WILL NOT magically “uncorrupt” themselves even after whatever kinda band-aid fix these clowns come up with. We will be forced to try and first, figure out which ones they even are since all we can see is corrupt data and second, go and redownload them all again.

As far as the trophies, I had none missing even just an hour ago. However, I just tried disabling my net connection and starting up White Knight Chronicles and the trophies are now magically missing from my PS3 list.LMFAO!! This is the biggest clusterF I have seen in quite a while. Thankfully I hadn;t gotten any new trophies during or after when this mess started so they’re all still sync’d up and sitting “safely?” in Sony’s servers. If my 1800+ trophies were to disappear completely, I’d have a damn nervous breakdown.LOL!

  • @240 How many time have you had an issue like this?

  • @241

The inability to play offline has nothing to do with hardware at all. It has the do with the games requiring information from the PSN before they are allowed to boot.

  • @242

As far as the corrupted themes go, since you bought it, you can always just re-download it. So that really is not an issue at all.

  • i have both MLB The Show 2010 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 waiting to be popped into my ps3….my 60GB ps3 btw. Sucks i can’t play.

  • I really hope the fix isn’t wait until it fixes itself. My displayed time has been frozen on 12/31 @ 6:37 PM. I hope my internal clock isn’t frozen there as well. Maybe instead of cutting costs by removing BC, the ROM’s programming should have been double and triple checked. Another quality job by Sony QA.

  • Also be aware that while some models still work along with certain that doesn’t mean that you are an exception to the rule. It just means you were lucky enough to not encounter the problem, that’s it. If this is more than a calendar problem then even those unaffected may still be at risk. Be smart don’t log on. Don’t complain about losing trophies and such if you have decided to ignore the warnings about turning on your system. I agree that Sony’s quiet approach to this is makes me a little uneasy but you shouldn’t expect a minute by minute update. We as consumers do deserve open communication with Sony be don’t be unrealistic about it.

  • Wow Sony you guys dropped the ball on this one. Of course technology could just be taking over and getting ready for 2012.
