PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.10) Update Preview

1,272 0

Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.

This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.

Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:

  • The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
  • The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

To get a preview of what’s coming in update 3.10, check out the video below:

We’re looking forward to releasing firmware update 3.10 soon. As always, we appreciate your feedback.

  • I’ll prob never use the facebook options, but its nice to see new features on the ps3. I’m liking the improved Photos. Just wish it’d be possible to look at a photo while in-game. You know, for when I’m trying to find all the pigeons in GTA IV. That’d be a huge help.

  • Pretty neat with the Facebook integration. Now I can see who has a PS3 on my friend’s list in Facebook and then add them to the PSN, sounds like a brilliant idea Sony.

Sony PLEASE BRING these features to future firmware updates:
    1. Cross game chat
    2. PS3 game boot chime
    3. Universal in-game music

  • I’m just happy we have the friends list fixed. Thank you Eric. To bad we don’t have Cross-Game Chat unless this is a last minute surprise.

Facebook stuff seems interesting enough, not exactly priority one in my book or something I was asking for. However at least you’re trying to keep up with the competition so keep it up.

  • Please tell me there’s an option to turn off the incredibly stupid vanishing menus.

  • PLEASE add

    * Cross Game Party Chat similair to Xbox Live

    * Trophy Level of friends displayed on main friends list page beside their name

  • so far i’ve been very dissapointed with the ps3 pass firmware update. I’m an original 60gb owner and a big loyal sony fan. Where is my cross-game invite and cross game chat. Where is my App store for application thought the ps3. No one care about facebook invitation when you could do it on pc or via ps3 browser. Lately you guise have been waisting energy on lame firmware update. Put that energy on creating a music psn store for both pc and psn that can compete to itune. stop waisting energy on useless update just to compete with microsoft. What happen to sony being innovation and being a leader not a follower. where is sony pride and creativity that what made me a big sony fan.Stop waisting my time with these useless update.

  • i least give us a hint about how far cross game chat is.

  • Sweet! I would love to see new Avatars and maybe Custom ones that you can upload yourself but with a filter soo noo naughty pictures and maybe even PSHome face pics as your avatar! that would be cool! Keep up the Good work Sony! your doing a great job! =]

  • Oh and Eric:

Thanks for fixing photos, could you guys possibly see what you can do about making the music section a little more…. organized?

  • Trophy posting on Twitter would be cool. :3

  • Looks great. I can’t lie and say I wasn’t wanting for more. I don’t think I will spam my facebook new feed with these as I might lose real friends. I am still hoping that you guys sneak in some other features (cross-game-voice-chat). Nice job continuing to improve the PS3 experience.

  • Bring back the logo and chime when starting a game

  • Not bad, but I quit using Facebook a few months ago and the functionality actually seems a bit irritating. Who wants to confirm that EVERY time they download anything? Why not add some TWITTER functionality next? Even better, MAKE A MORE FUNCTIONAL MUSIC PLAYER, PLEASE! I believe I speak for everyone when I say that it should be more like MediaPlayer or iTunes in function. As it is, it is VERY lacking. Thanks for the update and we look forward to more next time! :D

  • WOW this is FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!

  • It seems to be a great update. The more personalization available, the better.

  • put our FACEBOOK connected to our PSN PROFILE, meaning if someone clicks on our profile they would be able to see our facebook if we have one.

  • i dont like how it can show your store purchases on your facebook account, for everybody to see. doesnt this leave you open for scams and account or some form of user theft? i maybe over paranoid here tho, but is the security of the psn, the store, and your purchase information going to be upgraded and tightened as well. it just seems that only psn users should be able to see your trophys when they come across you from gaming, not for any facebook user that stumbles across your page? otherwise the photo layout is much better, and i hope for lots of treasures w this update. will psn go down as this seems like a major psn update. keep us informed, i hope the best for us all w this 3.10 update. BTW- will this also have some kind of positive effect on HOME and all the problems HOME and users seem to be facing since 1.30 started. freezing, missing purchases, major laging, and not even being able to enter plage it the most right now (aside from HOME mgmt not giving us real info on wats being done w these probs)

  • I don’t care about facebook, but I’m really glad I can chose pink for my own name. Thanks :D Now if only Sony would pink controllers. I’d want one. Other consoles have it…

  • very cool implementation. looking forward to it.

  • Wow. I haven’t been so irritated since not being able to go to the XMB in-game. I got to layeth the smackdown on you Sony or whoever runs this blog.

Stop trying to be the competition and build with what you got. How about cross game chat. And in-game music. Not this [DELETED] about Facebook. People on here actually want Twitter and last.fm !!! The hell is wrong with them!!??

PS3=Superior game console with everything you need outta the box (except for a 15 dollar HDMI cable)

The competition=Gimmicks, trying to be hip, cater to one target group (kids and FPS players), subscriptions to online gaming, lame motion controls, and inferior hardware.

    STOP BEING THE COMPETITION!!!

Listen to the gamers out there. Some may want this [DELETED] but many want core features that destroy the competition (manly the one with an X in it) all for free instead of buying a subscription.

Of course I shouldn’t complain about something that is free. Plus, I don’t even have to download it. But it goes to show that free does not equal what you and many other people want but what they (Sony) wants. Which to me looks like imitation not innovation.

  • This is great !!!

  • that an ok update…but sitll dont understand why you guys not add more new avatar as u guys said

  • Next, also how about letting us use any trophy image we have unlocked as our avatar? Then poeple have alot to chose from, and less likely 5 people on your list are using the same exact one, and sony doesn’t have to go out of their way making new ones.

  • No DivX7, no MKV, no SkyPe … my 3 complains

But, facebook is a nice addition, I hope you keep update on it: a more complex facebook interface (viewing videos and quizzes and friend status updates), an upload videos and images from your PS3 direct to facebook, and also status changes will be nice additions. Maybe you can do a separate facebook application like VideZone and PhotoAlbum

  • One thing i would like to get back is, to be able to listen to music and browse the web and images at the same time. Ever since the 3.00 update this feature isn’t enable. I think that would just be a great idea!!!

  • Awesome! I actually just punched an inanimate object I was so excited. Thanks for fixing the friend boxes.

Now all I want is cross game (universal) voice chat, in-game soundtracks, and the ability to view other people’s friends.

    Netflix + Facebook + PS3 = <3

    How about lala.com integration?

  • Backwards compatibility.

Duel application processing is always accepted. Like playing a game, then opening the web browser without exiting the game.

  • all i can say is that this firmware fails even before it comes out stop trying to make the ps3 social networking platform and make it a gaming platform because when i turn my ps3 i wanna play games damnit not update my facebook status whit just got his 14th platinum in uncharted 2 among thieves, which means whitwhit is a super nerd now and all his 450+ friends all know it now thanks sony but this firmware kicks the bucket mega ultra hard.

  • I keep getting singed out and update data keeps freezing when i try to download it, will those be fixed?

  • nice, another thing you should do is make the font size like how it used to be. used to look much neater and i like the friends list update, its better than before but it still needs improvment.

  • Care not, too much riff raff, facebook, Twitter, etc best for handhelds. I use my PS3 as a gaming machine, Blu-Ray player, although the recent Netflix addition was nice! That’s one thing I envied about the Xbox but not facebook. Give us something original please.

  • Another really cool update I really like that we will be able to link our facebook accounts to our PS3

    great job

  • i like the friends list & photo add-ons but honestly i couldn’t care less about facebook, myspace, or twitter

  • Another useless update… I cant believe it! Where is the only important CROSS GAME CHAT UPDATE???

  • Thank you Eric! Great update.

  • In-game XMB chat please, we deserve at least that… (I’d like to be able to chat with friends while playing a different gam, just as I could on the Xbox 360).

  • dear eric lempel,
first off congrads on the update; any improvement to the console is a welcomed one. However, announcing this (v3.1: facebook option) after the xbox 360 has already done so makes it less appealing. If you truely want to be innovative partner up a site like ps3trophycard.com. This current update (v3.1) seems like a attempt to keep pace with the xbox 360. There is no need to chew on the heels of the competion. This isnt like Sony. The Sony i know were leaders and not followers, but during the duration of this current gen. cycle Sony has lost its spirit. Now as i mentioned before i’m not complaing but sharing a concern. My history with Sony traces back to the ps1 and i have never deviated from my path. Again please consider the ps3tropycard.com idea, it would soo sweet. thank you

  • How soon is ‘soon’ exactly? Hehe

  • I don’t use Facebook. Is there a way to hide this feature from view or an option to delete?

  • I just want 2 things from the OS update:

better Netflix implementation (I’ve had bad luck with audio & visual being out of sync on most of the files I’ve tried to stream)

and for the OS to recognize deeper nested folders on external Hard Drives connected to the system. Right now, my PS3 can only recognize about 3 levels of folders. It should be able to drill down infinitely in a hierarchical folder structure (where I have my video files organized so neatly)… why are any files past the 3rd folder down invisible to the PS3?

  • why not hook up PSBLOG to the PS3. set it up to the information bar or something.

  • I REALLY DONT LIKE ANY OF THE AVATARS!! SONY PLEASE ALLOW US TO USE OUR PICTURES THAT WE STORE IN OUR PS3 SO THEN WE CAN SEE HOW ALL OUR FRIENDS LOOK LIKE!!!! thank you.

  • This is brilliant, I’m itching to see how good the Twitter side of things is too. Ever since the pre-release of mw2 iv been hooked. Also we need profile avatars which are exclusive to the individual, mabye using our home avatar mugshot.

  • Nice firmware update, thank you guys!

  • great update! Maybe instead of using another color for your psn id box, it’d be sweet to be able to pick a photo as the background. It’d also be nice if instead of the box, we can choose to display our home avatar

  • I forgot to mention, there should be a way that someone can login to the playstation.com site and send a message to a friend from there to a PS3 whenever they are online or offline, now THAT would be cool!

  • I don’t use facebook, guess I’m out of luck except for changing colors? Really lame guys.

  • Looks great cant wait.
a twitter add-on/update woud make me really happy.
and when are we gonna get new avatars?

  • Being able to change the profile color is ok, but it’d be handier to change others color, rather than your own, so you could color code/sort groups.

  • “Now, instead of grey boxes, Im probably gonna have a list of rainbow boxes instead of grey ones..oh great!

Make the boxes more TRANSLUCENT! They still take up to much of the screen sony..”

Thank you whoever posted this. Please just revert us back to 2.7/2.8! These changes are just getting worse! There is elegance in simplicity Sony!

Second of all, did you fix the disappearing menus problem introduced in 3.0? This is a critical problem that should have been a higher priority to you than Facebook integration!
