I’ve had no problems whatsoever after updating to 3.0 – all my games and BD movies work.
I have a launch 60GB if anyone was wondering.
My PS3 was working fine. A friend of mine told me the new firmware was causing games to crash, but I read many people not having any problem and I needed to play online, so I had no choice. After upgrading the system I got to play and guess what: games freeze, constantly.
I read about this 3.01 solving this issue, so I installed it quickly, but guess what: it got worse. Games wouldn’t even start up. Blu-ray sounded strange, and some games were not even recognized.
I went on and tried to repair the hard drive (repair mode) and luckily it looked fixed. Blu-ray would recognize all games again, and they got going. However they keep freezing.
It’s so frustrating to have this problem. I can’t play and I KNOW it was the firmware. A firmware with hew sparkles and boxes and things I didn’t need, but things forced into my PS3. Now, it’s useless and Sony simply think it’s my fault. This is so sad.
As previously mentioned:
“I have a sick blu-ray player. I had been running 3.0 for a while, then when trying to start Arkham Asylum this evening, the game symbol disappeared and it would no longer load games or blu-ray movies. Upgraded to 3.01, to no effect.”
So, now I have reinstalled the original 40Gb hard drive, and it looked promising to start with… even though the system said it was running 3.01, when I inserted the Arkham Asylum disc, it was recognised by the PS3.
However, seeing as I was not yet released when I upgraded by HD, I had to do a reinstall. I started the reinstall about twenty minutes ago, and now I have an error message:
An error has occurred. (8002291A)
Is anyone familiar with this error message?
added option for anyone with an affected PS3 to submit their story, console info, firmware info, and year purchased into the “sony bricked me” ps3circleofdeath.com database.
Site wont be fully live until Oct 5th, but trying to add few things a day until then.
Until finalized, this can least start a list of those affected!
Bry
obvy has a couple of bugs, only had 45 min to write it, so for now please just enter info on main page and then you can see the list. Dont refresh on the page, will keep entering null info, going to fix in AM. Just want to begin the list.
Just spoke to the local support guys and the retailer from which I bought the console. Neither had any useful advice, nor seemed familiar with the issue.
I am about to go on holiday for two and a half weeks, so hopefully when I get back there will be a new firmware update.
Sony , Please Just FIX THE Bluray Problem With 3.10!
Do it Please!
sony companies maked the 3.01 frimware to mess up our ps3 and is making profit by us paying $150 to repair it. so if you are planning to buy a ps3,do not bother switch to the xbox 360. I HATE YOU SONY!!!!!!!!
Any word on repairing the PS3s that stopped working with the update? My Blu-Ray drive crashed tonight…
Hey sony can you give me friends of friends lists like live?
And cross chat?
Cheers
mine is also unable to read blu ray discs as well as ps3 games. do you think if i install a new hard drive and reinstall the software… think it might go back to normal?
Hi Spudly81,
I had the same thought, but when I reinstalled the older, original 40Gb hard drive, when it booted up it came up with firmware 3.01. It recognized my Batman Arkham Asylum disc, but then I got an error (8002291A) during install.
I’ve used my PS3 maybe 15 times for bluray movies only in the past year and a half. Last week I popped in a BR disc to finish a movie. Everything was working fine to finish the Afro Samurai BR. After that I noticed that there was a FW update. I updated to 3.01 then popped in State of Play. I got to the menu and ran around the house to do a few things then my machine froze on the Universal HD screensaver.
After the 3.01 FW update my BR drive will not read anything; no games, no dvds, no bluray discs! This machine has barely been used….but of course I’m out of warranty after a year and a half. I know correlation does not imply causation, but the fact that so many other owners are experiencing the same thing leads me to believe the Sony PS3 firmware update is the cause. Sony really needs to step up and take responsibility for this type of issue or I’m most definitely never purchasing another Sony product.
Just wanted to add to the growing list of unhappy ps3 owners. Original owner of a 60g that no longer reads any disc I try. After talking to a customer service rep. they refuse to aknowledge any problems and in order to get it fixed I have to pay the $149.00 plus state tax. So frustrated! I have babied that thing since I got it, already paid the launch price of $599 plus countless games and blurays…yet they wanna gouge their loyal customers an additional $150 for their F-up! Thanks Sony.
Hi Guys, my original 60gb froze 5 minutes after 3.01, after resetting NO discs recognized ps2/ps3/dvd/BR etc. I will try this work around tonight:
My PS3 decided one day it was gonna stop reading discs. today my brother was playing a demo since he cant play any games and he pressed the PS button to quit the game and found that when the XMB came up, NHL 09, the game in the console, was displayed and ready to play. When he quit the game it wasnt on the XMB anymore. He went back into the game and hit the PS button and it showed up again!! i reccomend everyone with a PS3 try this before deciding your system is trashed. Bring up your XMB while playing a game and your discs will show and then select them from there.
The BD on my original 60G PS3 died after upgrade to 3.01. HELP!
Yeah…3.01 fixed nothing. Anything on a blu-ray disc doesn’t work at all. Movies and games. Still waiting on Sony and their mediocre tech support to put out a new update or retract this one.
Well I tried to do the update via PC followed the instructions to a “T” uppercase and all then transfered thumb drive to PS3, Only problem is the PS3 says: ” No applicable update data was found.”???
But when i open the file on the Thumb drive the update is very much there….Help please.
I’m adding my name to this ever growing list. I watched the first Narnia movie on Bluray from start to finish with no problems. 2 days later the 3.0 update comes out and I update to it. I go to watch the second Narnia movie with the misses the next night and it goes about 5 minutes into the movie and freezes. This requires a hard power down and when it boots back up it will either a) not show the Bluray drive under the movie heading (even though the disc is clearly in there) or b) come back with an error about an unsupported file format or disc. I tried many BD movies & games and they all did the same thing. I did not try standard DVD’s as I have a dedicated player for those and I really don’t care if my PS3 can play them or not…that’s not its job. Luckily I did have a Best Buy PRP so I was able to go in and get a new slim within about an hour but it cost me $40 for the original PRP plus another $40 for a new PRP…I felt I had to buy another one because of these pronounced problems Sony is having with both hardware and software and their joke of a 90 day warranty. After that they want me to pay $150 to fix their pile? No thanks.
Wow. Sony hasn’t replied to any of this. Great work!! They just commented and said “This fixes uncharted: drakes fortune” then off they went! Didn’t bother to check and see that it actually ruined more PS3’s and didn’t even fix the problem!
Okay, seriously, the conspiracy theories need to stop. Sony’s making a major push right now with the Slim and the price drop to take on M$, and the last thing they’re trying to do is make a fast buck on temporarily destroying our PS3’s.
If anything, they’re pulling their hair out trying to get it fixed. Alienating your core base of customers is not good business, so just chill already people.
I’ve talked to Sony twice on the phone. Both times, they tried to talk me into a wall and tell me my only option was to send it in for service for 150$. According to them there is nothing wrong with the firmware, it is completely illogical to assume that even just these 700+ posts are all actual hardware problems not involving the 3.0/1 update. My 60gb ps3 has worked fine for 2 years, played 100’s of blu-ray movies and many games. It worked fine up until I bought Madden X, was prompted to install 3.0 upon the first time playing, and since then I’ve never gotten a game to play longer than 5-10 minutes before completely locking up my system. It does not make sense that in the past 2 months of playing ps3 games and watching many blu-ray movies, that the only thing about the system that has changed is the Firmware, and suddenly my hardware is dead? If a variable was implemented and functionality changes, then the variable must be responsible. At this point Sony is clearly not going to acknowledge us, so I suggest you start contacting your favorite gaming news spots, and submit an email to someone in the PS3 section explaining your situation. If enough negative press is made public Sony will be forced to acknowledge their flaw.
Another unhappy non-Blu-ray playing PS3 owner, thanks to 3.0/3.01. Been posting in the specific threads about this, but adding to the noise here too.
PLEASE FIX THIS SONY.
I just saw this issue posted on Engadget and was thrilled to hear I wasn’t the only one having Blu Ray issues. I sent an email to PS3 Support and they made it sound like I was crazy and that it was the TV’s fault.
In my case, Blu Ray movies don’t work. I can insert them into the PS3 and they will never show up on on the list as an available option. I get no movie icon.
I know it’s got to be the firmware. I had watched some of Valkyrie a month or so ago. Then tried to finish the movie a week or so ago with no luck. So the same disk, with the same hardware setup worked before and not now. The only thing that’s changed has been the firmware.
Come on Playstation! Admit this is a problem. I have a customer service department at my company and the worst thing you could do is ignore your customers.
Yeah Sony you can fix this or go ahead and shut down your video game division because it is toast
I have a ps3 phat from last November. I purchased it from a 3rd party seller. The ps3 is in excellent condition. I feel that I am fortunate that I don’t use my ps3 for a lot of gaming because I haven’t played it in about 1 month. If I had been playing it more regularly I probably would have downloaded firmware update 3.0/3.1 Right now I’m afraid to update the firmware since it could brick my system. Sony really needs to address this or it could quickly become a pr nightmare. All it will take is one class-action lawsuit and then they will definitely stop saying there isn’t an issue.
So this is not just my ‘isolated’ incident? Nice to see that it fixes Uncharted, but what about the other games or movies it does nothing about?
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love my PS3 Slim to death. I got my first one on release, updated it when 3.00 came out. Worked fine for a bit, watched a blu ray movie almost all the way through, than it froze. After that first freeze it would not recognize many discs, and the few it would, such as Infamous and a couple of Blu-Ray movies, they would freeze. I thought mine was just a faulty system, exchanged it and carried on… have yet to update my second slim out of fear. Hope a permanent fix comes out soon, I still haven’t been able to play my PS3 online yet, and with some hot releases on the horizon, it’d be wise to be able to update and actually play.
Adding my name & problem to the growing list…
Last night, I watched a Blu Ray on my PS3 (as I do almost daily), no problem. When the movie was over, I signed in to the Playstation Store, requiring me to update to 3.01. Immediately after the update, I put in my brand new Gladiator Blu Ray, which freezes about 5 minutes in. After a few unsuccessful attempts, I give up and switch to a game. The game also freezes within moments. Now I can’t use the disc drive at all without Error messages.
Sony – Please fix this!!
September = no games played on the ps3 because my damn blu-gay drive won’t work after the 3.00 firmware update. WHAT THE F()CK?
mine works perfect so dont know whats happening
were eagerly waiting for the inauguration of the ps3circleofdeath.com website…..october 5,09.
sony must do something about this error that they created otherwise its over for me…no more sony electronics in the future….hey there!!! bright and intelligent kids, enhance your skilled and talented minds…look at what happened…we are so dependent with foreign made products…we used to be the best in this field…and now we are being screwed and laughed at….put down that controller, study hard and be the best. one day, a member of this group will be the pioneer in future high tech electronics.
when is Norton for ps3 coming out ? (so we can remove this malware – FW3.0/3.01)
I updated to 3.0 and my PS3 immediately began freezing whenever i attempted to load a DVD or Blu-ray.
Yesterday I updated to 3.01 and suddenly Blu-Ray disks work again.
OWN UP TO THIS MISTAKE SONY. PLEASE FIX THIS.
Sony has commented on this and their stance is it’s not the firmware that’s causing all the BR problems. Official statements have been issued and if this has affected you your SOL. Lets see Sony with a 1 year warrenty and they deny any fault on their part or Microsoft with a 3 year warrenty and they cover the RROD and error codes. Guess what Sony you lose again.
I upgraded to 3.0 update and hadn’t noticed any issues until I put in a disc of Star Trek Original Series Season 2 on bluray. After about 10 min it pauses (doesn’t lock up the system like a freeze). I can hit play to resume, then it pauses again a min later. Repeat. Finally it seemed to keep playing without pausing. This happened to 2 of the episodes so far. I don’t have another bluray player to try it on to compare.
So then I decided to put in Star Trek III which somoene posted earlier that would not play and it played fine. I also watched 2 other bluray movies ST:VI and ST: First Contact and they both played fine.
I have the 40GB model with no PS2 compatibility. I am afraid to upgrade to 3.01 since it might make it worse.
So hundreds of PS3’s breakdown after updating the firmware and it’s not the firmware’s fault? Everyone’s bluray drives just decided to fail at the same time? Yeah right. I can’t believe Sony didn’t learn from Microsoft on trying to deny the problems and then finally having to admit it and extend warranties.
This is long winded but PLEASE PLEASE read on..it will HELP YOU ALL!!
My PS3 packed up working properly after the 3.01 update (not reading Blue-rays or games). It’s a 40GB and only 22 months old, but of course out of warranty because of age. I called SONY and spoke to an arrogant unhelpful agent who basically wanted to grab £130 as quick as he could from me for a replacement and refused to acknowledge the widespread problems reported by PS3 owners…apparently I’m the only customer in the UK to complain..yeah right!! SONY state “It’s a hardware problem clearly”. This is without even looking at my PS3..mighty impressive!! (continued)
Anyways I contact “GAME” where I bought it from and reported the problem to them. I basically used the “Sale Of Goods Act 1979” as my line of complaint! see link http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Yourrightsandresponsibilities/DG_10015892?cids=Google_PPC&cre=Government_Citizens_Rights
This is a VERY VERY strong piece of legislation that works and protects buyers!!
Basically you state that he PS3 was not “Fit for purpose” and not “Durable”. A £300 machine should last longer than 22 months, i.e. 4-6 years average.
By law, when you buy an item you enter a “contract” with the shop you bought it from. When an item is out of warranty, don’t complain to the manufacturer i.e. SONY, complain to the shop you bought it from as they sold it to you. They can argue with SONY themselves because it was supplied to them by SONY.
When the goods break and are expected to last a long time i.e. high value electricals (PS3’s XBOX 360’s), the goods therefore “Do not conform to contract” i.e. the contract you have with the shop when you bought it. No store can argue with it as it the law, and as a consumer the sale of goods act 1979 is there to protect you “The Consumer” for events like this! As long as you are reasonable and ask for repair in the first instance they cannot refuse and it’s down to them to pay. If they cannot repair it then they are obliged to offer a replacement or refund. They must also do it causing the least amount of inconvenience to you.
“GAME” have taken my PS3 away to a workshop, had it for 5 days and hey presto it’s fixed and working now. And guess what SONY, it was down to a glitch with the latest firmware update 3.01!!!! SONY ARE LIARS but this is the only way us PS3 owners can sort this problem out. It’s long winded but saves you stress and hassle and having to pay £130 or worse still £250 for a new one!
Please please all of you that have had this problem complain to the shop you bought it from using the “Sale of goods act”. It genuinely works!!! Good Luck!!
My copy of Uncharted doesn’t work AFTER the 3.01 update. I’ve got as far as choosing the game’s difficulty before it locks up. It also freezes in other various places, but I’ve never even got as far as playing the game. Just bought this 40gb ps3 three days ago from gamestop, refurbished. LittleBigPlanet works, as does MGS4. Sony, don’t try to squeeze more money out of your customers for a problem YOUR update CLEARLY caused. This many people with the same exact problem IS NOT A COINCIDENCE!!
This is [DELETED] SONY!
I was in wal-mart the other day and seen a guy eyeing the new PS3 slim’s and Xbox 360’s. He looked a little unsure what to buy and I recommend the new PS3 Slim (I just bought mine 3 weeks ago and love it) The reason why I recommend it to him is because.
1. Sony hardware is built to last 10+ years ( this was a huge incentive for me because xbox has over 50% failure rate )
2. no extra costs for Blue-ray and wireless
3. Almost all the new games are now on PS3 and they work/look great.
4. PSN is Free.
He bought it on the spot and I hope he’s having as much fun with it as I am.
If you don’t fix this [DELETED] I will never, “NEVER” stick my neck out and recommend your product to anyone. This includes all my xbox friends who are looking to switch.
Thank you
worried PS3 owner
If there is a problem, Sony will fix it. Do you really think they want negative publicity for the PS3? Think rationally for a change and have some patience. I’ve had Sony gear for over 35 years and there is no reason to assume Sony will leave you in the dust. To assume Sony would do this on purpose is ridiculous. To those who called early maybe they weren’t aware yet. Sony has released a fantastic machine. Sony has provided all types of new features (like Dts MA) free of charge, updating for free instead of making you buy a new model for new features. Remember you do not have to update your machine the minute a firmware update is released. I always wait, and if it wants to force the update I unplug the internet cable until I know the firmware has been in use for 3-4 weeks and there are no reports like what is happening here. I do agree that Sony should test these on every model and have them running for weeks before releasing a firmware. But I still feel very good about Sony products and have faith in them. It only takes brains to know that Sony does not intend to let their brand be hurt in light of heavy competition and certainly doesn’t want any “ring of death” type disaster.
My ps3 60 gig model stopped reading blu ray discs after the update. Now a blue light shows constantly when a disc is in. I went out to buy a ps3slim, but I am now returning it and telling everyone about it. I am a software engineer and to have hardware fail constantly over the spectrum like this generally accounts for an issue in software. This is too co-incidental not to be a firmware 3.01 disc drive issue. Sony please acknowledge this so we can have a patch. I don’t care when it comes, as long as I know its coming.
I don’t think it’s so hard. A simple statement: “we are aware of the problem and we are working to find a solution”. Every frustrated PS3 owner here will relax a little and wait for the patch. Is it too much to ask?
Yeah, exactly. Not saying “Sure, we can fix the problem. $150 pl0x!” would be nice too.
I always wait to see if firmware issues come up before updating my PS3 or Xbox. I still have the last firmware before 3.00 came out (I like to play Uncharted).
Guess what, it still works. Plays games, reads discs both DVD and BD.
Just wanted to post this for those being told its “a coincidence” by Sony Customer Support that the death of your PS3 happened after updating to 3.00/3.00. Mine machine is an original 60gb Fatboy. Hope this is fixed everyone really soon!
I have also been experiencing the game-freezing problems after 3.01 and I have a tip I’d like to share. My first crash was during LBP-GOTY. Then it also started freezing during KZ2. Support walked me through how to restore the file system and this repaired some issues, and I have not seen the problems again in KZ2 or several other games. LBP still freezes on the same level, but after that I restore the file system again, it fixes issues, and makes the system stable enough for other games. My theory is that the firmware issues are with specific games, but that the resulting crashes exacerbate the issue and extend it to other games. It would be helpful if Sony would let us know which titles are most prone to crashing so that we can avoid them.
Another quick theory: the firmware is causing certain games to crash, but the crashing is causing the fragile blu-ray drives on our launch-era systems to fail.
If this is true, then new firmware won’t help the situation, because thanks to the crashing, we do now have a hardware issue.
I have an 80GB PS3 BC that was bundled with Motorstorm. After installing 3.0, it would freeze after playing less than 10 minutes of the Beatles Rock Band. After reading about the 3.01 firmware update, I installed that, and now the game still freezes, but after about 25-30 minutes of play time. Our other games freeze as well: GHWT, Rock Band 2, Little Big Planet, Star Wars Battlefront II… and on and on…
Sony, please help us by issuing a fix!
