  • Somehow Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires now started freezing after every Mission.
But when I press the output button of the PS3 it continues for a moment. As long as the PS3 is outputting the gamedisk.

I have the new FW installed and thus it happens with DW6E. Thats not good because its nearly impossible to play one of my favorite games.

What can be the problem? Still the new FW? Will there then be another update?

  • I just recently got a new PS3 Slim 120g model, was working fine with 2.8 updated to 3.0, Uncharted started to freeze.

I than downloaded 3.1, fixed Uncharted but some of my other games started to freeze. Some games started to stutter. Some game’s sounds going in and out. Looks like blue ray or hard drive and flow of data from either one is messing up.

Got tired of these Updates returned it back to store for another one. Guess what my new PS3 Slim has version 2.7 firmware and guess what again, all my games are working now!

Sony I hope you fix what ever problems you are having with the firmware. I have my new PS3 Slim unhooked from my router so it can not update the firmware.

I will not update my firmware until I hear Sony has a working firmware that works.

  • I have not seen anyway to actually submit feature requests, but I have 2 which I think are far simpler than “cross game chat” and countless others which I personally do not have a use for.

    I would love:
    – External filesystem support for any FS supporting files larger than 4GB. This can be NTFS, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4, ReiserFS, XFS, ZFS, JFS, bla bla bla. I do not personally care which you add support for, pick any one.
    – Better support for subtitles in media playback. MP4 & DivX embedded subtitles are pretty flaky with your current implementation. I would very much fancy external plain text subtitles (ie: .srt).

I think of my PS3 much like your recent TV ads try to portray it: a media center which can do everything in my household. For my purposes it is a little lacking on the media side as a result of the above mentioned points.

There are countless forum threads, blog posts etc… where people are seeking these features. There are also thousands of self appointed specialists saying you will never add these features. I would love for you, Sony, to come out with a short and simple reply. Just to know you are working on it would be quite satisfying for me.

  • I purchased the PS3 mainly as a BR player and media center device. I am now getting very tempted by many other devices on the market which provide the features I am looking for from a media center perspective (ie: Mvix Ultio which fulfills both of those feature requests as well as plays MKVs). That being said I would much prefer having a single device at the center of my media, and that device being the PS3.

    Thank you for your time.

One of your many million patrons,

    PS3Friend

  • Well, just to give everyone an update.
For all of us who still have freezing game issues after 3.0 and 3.01. We are still out of luck. They are not taking responsibility for the FW update making our PS3’s useless. Talked to a supervisior today and the only way to resolve the problem is for US to pay for the $150 service. I don’t think the word disappointing says enough.

I can’t even load the games back on the HD. GTA 4 and MGS4 stops in the middle of the required instalation.

  • I feel sorry for all the PS3 users that upgraded to v3.0 and 3.01 and are now having problems.

I would suggest giving Sony one more update to solve the game crashing/freezing/Disc reading problem. If the next update doesn’t fix the game and video playing problems (specifically), create a new forum post discussing possibility of a class-action lawsuit, charging Sony with willfully damaging your console, and follow it through. It is willful since they have the ability to push out v2.80 as a new update and failed to do so within a reasonable time-frame.

That being said, don’t expect Sony to push out another update quickly.

  • For those that are feeling the temptation to try the update anyways, don’t bother. Wait a couple of weeks until people start offering their comments on further firmware changes.

As for Sony… tsk tsk. There are good reasons why people are angry at you. It seems the Sony “PR” Game Engine has frozen as well. That is probably the biggest problem with Sony – not the updates breaking consoles, but the lack of apathy.

Sony Japan: You need to do something that sets you apart from your competitors. Under-performing with regards to sincerity and PR, and charging customers to fix a firmware issue you created is not the way to do it.

Don’t forget, your products are typically more expensive than everything else on the market – you need to show that your products are worth throwing money at, short-term and long-term.

  • Reminds me of some bad firmware shipped with a Celestron robotic telescope mount – the firmware was so bad, it caused the mount to go haywire – and fail repeatedly. Rather than fix the firmware, they told everyone to send their mounts in for repair ($40 S&H + brokerage costs back across the border). Over a year and a half later, they released a bug-fixed firmware version that solved the problem on nearly every unit. The bug was squashed over a year earlier and the new firmware was apparently handed off to Celestron, but calls to Celestron’s tech support were met with the response “there is no firmware update”.

What is the going rate for incompetence? ;)

  • I refuse to upgrade until these issues get resolved. I have a perfectly working PS3 right now.

Hear that sony? No more purchases from me until you stepup and fix this buggy firmware.

  • How about internet radio like the PSP has. that would be cool. no complaints its fine with me.

  • SONY please we want Voice Chat Party System and Cross Game Chat!!!!!!!!

  • I downloaded the update yesterday, even though I hadnt had any problems with Uncharted (an update’s an update after all) and now when I boot up Uncharted, it doesn’t even load. at all. im sat staring at that spinning coin thing for HOURS.

please tell me someone else has had this problem so Sony can rectify it.

  • Nice update Sony and nice to see you have fixed it so quick.

I like 3.0 update, its alot better than old one but the friends list looks a bit poo but all the rest is good

(friends names are a bit far apart but other than that good update.

cross games chat would be good because you dont always wanna chat to only friends playing same games and also to be able to open chat with friends on dash would be good.

  • Why did you remove the possibility to return to xmb while listening to music?

in fw3.00 it was still possible.

  • Law suit sounds about right 2 me cause im getting sick of my games not working cause of the F@#$ up why should we have to pay its not fair cause they wanna make more money F@#$ them Its not right at all :(.. im so pist its unreal ive spent countless dollars on my ps3 and they want me to pay 197 to fix yesh there gos my gameing i will NOT PAY i repeat WILL NOT PAY!!!!!!!!!!! all us people with f@#$ up ps3s due to f\w updates need to come 2 togther and do something about this !! I will not stand for this !!!! i can 2work eveything but my games add me on psn if u want 2 later thx

  • Ive gotten 3.01 and still no read on Blue Ray Ps3 games Ps2 games. Any one know where i can downgrade if i can or wht the hell i can do cause sony’s no help as of yet its almost a week

  • but the GUI looks great though lol but….. My inner geek is screaming at the top of my lungs!!

  • u cant do f@#$ all solyn ur ps3 is stuck the way it is

  • Sony,
Thank you for the update. I appreciate the 3.0 update, I don’t see what the big fuss about it was when it came out. I like the friends list and everything you have included in the 3.0 update. I am still waiting for the new avatars though. As for the people who threaten to get another system, let them. They forget you have to pay a yearly subscription to play online. Thank you for never charging to play games online, that is the way it should be!

  • Most of those threatening to get another system arn’t doing so because of grey boxes or sparkles, or even because of on-line gaming (free or otherwise), it’s because since 3.0 we can’t play any games at all, period. I think threatening to give up on a system that, after a firmware update, has stopped working is not unreasonable behaviour. Especialy as there has been no consideration whatsoever from Sony. Yes it may now well be a hardware fault, and yes it may well be out of warrenty, but you will find it very difficult to convice dozens, if not hundreads, of owners that their blue ray drives all decided to break in the same way at pretty much the same time after an update that Sony has already confirmed has caused at least some problems.

  • Updated to 3.01 and now nothing is available for movies or PS3 games in BD drive. (2006 60Gb) Was working before- could even play Drake’s Fortune w/3.0 update. Will Sony do anything until enough of their out-of-luck customers speak up? The right thing to do is to be pro-active and acknowledge the users whose systems are bricks because of their software and release a statement… Seems that the list of broken PS3 is growing and growing…

  • This update is affecting so many people that it’s ridiculous. Sony, FIX IT!

I use my PS3 as a BD player 99% of the time. Before the FW update, I was able to play all BD discs. After the update, PS3 does not recognize any BD discs. Here’s a link to AVS forum with the exact thread.

  • Thanks guys :)

  • I know I’m in the minority, but I am one of the ones who had their Blu-ray capabilities killed by 3.01. Blu-ray worked (Watchmen) when I started the day at 3.0, did the update to 3.01, and Blu-ray (Wolverine) stopped working. DVDs still work.

Tried disconnecting Internet, disabling auto-BD Live, resetting system preferences, deleted saved BD movie files, etc. Nothing.

This is a firmware problem, simple as that. It may only affect a few thousand of us, but it’s still wrong.

  • Obviously Sony thinks these are hardware problems. It does happen, and maybe they haven’t had many complaints. Hundreds of thousands have been sold since the price drop, and release of the slim. If they’ve only gotten a handful of complaints, they may just consider it a defective product. Only one thing I can suggest. If your Playstation 3 is new, and still within the return window for your retailer, return it and exchange it for a new one. After that, If you still think it’s a firmware problem, don’t update the exchange unit until a new FW update is released. And, if possible, buy an extended warrenty.

  • Hm. I myself am kind of disappointed that I can’t explore the Playstation Network and store myself, but I am not willing to risk updating my unit from 2.53 when nothing is wrong, and most of the affected units I’ve heard of are of the same release model as mine. I’m hoping for other people’s sake that a timely working update is released, but I have no rush to update. I’ll just not bother buying multiplayer games and maybe revisit a lot of old PSX favorites I own, since I can’t connect without an update.

  • I can’t believe this, I have a 60gb original, just updated to 3.01 played first level of Uncharted was loading second level (spinning coin) and the coin never stopped spinning, reset the ps3 now wont recognize ANY discs at all, I cant afford to buy a new ps3, just started family, first child, one income, VERY UPSET!!!, was counting the days to Uncharted 2

  • i feel your pain i bought my 40 gb with the spiderman bundle like 2 years ago since then i have been waiting for God of War 3. We now have 2 kids my job is consistenly getting worse waiting for the economy to come around and they kill my PS3 and want me to pay to fix what they screwed up.

  • Ok this is bullish, sony you should be ashamed of your selves putting out crap firm ware to the public like that, not only does ur online suck like a 1/10( the only reason u get 1 is cuz its free). Your gamjes freeze u cant download as much as 360, like i love my ps3 but u homos are making me think of getting a 360 and just selling my ps3, lets go pick it up, spend soem more money stop being so fregion cheap with everything you do.

  • i agree with the last comment

  • I love the new update of 3.0 cant wait to update to 3.1. I just dont like how we cant listen to music and message someone else at same time…Can you guys just fix that please? If not then thats ok too….

  • I have a 80gb console, manufactured April 2009….updated to firmware 3.00 then to 3.01…played Uncharted & it freezes & freezes & freezes….Sony please fix this ASAP

  • Before Firmare 3.00, Uncharted worked fine….Did’nt seem to me that 3.01 fixed Uncharted….It’s really frustrating….I wonder if Uncharted 2 will be the same result.

  • 60GB PS3 Worked fine before 3.0 Then MLB 09 The Show freezing 10-15 minutes into game. Madden 10 freezes into game. In both cases, audio commentary stops and I hear a audio loop in the background. Upgraded to 3.01 and same issues. This leads me to believe that there was a sound driver update in 3.0 that is conflicting. Also my Blu-Ray movies that worked fine before also freeze 10-15 minutes into the films. Sony’s response has been terrible. It is either the biggest coincidence of hardware failure or the firmware is bad. If Sony would just admit there may be an issue and that they are working on it, it would appease us all. But the response that it is a hardware problem is shortsighted and a little insulting.

  • A Class Action lawsuit is an option if Sony continues down this path and lets this error go untreated but it takes a lot of time and money to get going and could be years before any member of the lawsuit received compensation. In the meantime people can report this matter in the US to the Federal Trade Commission found here: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/ and/or to the Better Business Bureau found here: http://www.bbb.org/ I will say when you fill these forms out, be professional about it. They will not take it seriously if it is filled with curses or Sony bad mouthing. The goal for us should be to get Sony’s attention that we are serious and all we really want is get back to gaming but we will not be ignored. The 3.0 update was a mandatory update the caused these failures and needs to be corrected. The forms take a few minutes to fill out. I filled out both. I also used SCEA’s address in Foster City as the other party. Take the time to fill these out folks and put Sony on notice. I mean since our PS3’s aren’t working, you’ve got some free time on your hands.

  • Well I thought all was well with this new fw 3.01 but I have just had Batman Arkman Asylum crash upon exiting the game again. =(

  • @636 thx ive made a complant as well thx for the info i will keep post on what happends at my end i hope this works :D

  • I posted earlier (622) and all lost disc readability after updated from 3.00 to 3.01. I heard from a friend about rebuilding the Database. Didn’t think it would help (it didn’t help him, but had nothing to lose):
    1. Turn off Playstation®3.
    2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
    3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
    4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
    5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
    6. The Recovery menu will pop up. Select Rebuild Database. Took only 10 min. for me.
Then I popped in Batman Arkham Asylum, and WAS ABLE TO PLAY IT AGAIN, blu-ray movies too. Won’t hurt to try and it didn’t erase my HD. Best of all, I didn’t have to waste $150 to send it back to Sony, when they probably would’ve just done the same thing. So glad I didn’t accept the thought that a hardware failure happened exactly the same time as the firmware update. Bogus.

  • I am just as angry as everyone else, as I am in the same boat as many of you: 80gb B/C.

I agree fully with almost every comment, and it is even worse that Sony haven’t released any statement or anything regarding this issue, and their incompetent customer service on the phone don’t help.

However, people don’t fret just yet. Despite Sony ignoring us, I think we should give them some time. If they are prepared to release an update to fix a minor issue like Uncharted crashing then you would would think they would release a fix for this right? At least I hope so.

Sony, just release a fix so we can play our games, and even still, let us at least know you are doing it. Leaving us in the dark like this is unfair.

  • mc56 @ 630

A very mature comment, I must say.

I have no idea why Sony isn’t bending over backwards to please insightful literate adults like you. Lol.

  • It’s utterly ridiculous that so many of us are still having problems, and yet still no response from Sony. Did 3.01 fix the problems for ANYONE who’d been having problem with 3.00? What was the point of 3.01?

On another note, I still have no idea why the disc auto-start function no longer works. If this feature was intentionally disabled, then why is it still listed among the system options? (And it doesn’t make any sense that it’s just to force people to start at “What’s New,” because you can turn that start-up option off just fine.)

  • Here’s an idea: You can trade your old PS3 in at GameStop for $150 towards the purchase of a new Slim. If Sony isn’t going to pay attention to its customers, fine — let’s pass all the broken systems onto their corporate buddies at GameStop, and see how well that goes over.

  • mc56 @ 630

    lolwut?

    Its funny really.
On September 1st I went and bought a PS3 slim, got home and updated it to 3.0 straight away, and I also updated my PS3 classic shortly after and neither have had a problem with games or online (at least that i know of yet)

I’ve been playing Dead Space on my Ps3 classic and Batman and GTA4 on my slim and there’s been no problems like the ones listen here.

I have a 60GB b/c model, which has a 250GB drive in it and my slim has a 320gb drive in it. I downloaded the updates through the PS3 and I live in the UK so I obviously got it from the Europe servers.

I think these incidents aren’t as widespread as this blog leads people to believe.

  • The firmware 3.00 totally killed my ps3 (80 GB hitachi) to play any blu-ray movie or game.
3.01 did not change that. So I took the HD of my YLOD broken ps3 (60GB seagate), had to reformate it and update it directly from 2.80 to 3.01 and now everything is fine.
So it´s definitely the firmware that is causing all these problems!

  • chemiker, can you explain a little more what have you done to fix the problem?
If your method works, you could help a lot of people

  • The firmware is not stored on the HDD. I’ve reformatted my HDD twice and it always boots with the same 3.01 firmware.

  • I’ve also reformatted the HD with the PS3 format tool and the firmware is still there. However when you replace the HD with a new (blank) one you need to load a firmware from USB. So I’m guessing the firmware has it’s own partition that isn’t touched by the PS3 format tool. If you have a USB HD enclosure you could see what’s actually on the HD by attaching to a PC. I don’t have one handy so I can’t confirm this. I’d like to know if you can load 2.80 on a new HD, if anyone has tried this. Thanks.

  • I might have to find an old laptop drive and try that out, at least until we get a patch that fixes the problem. The firmware should be available somewhere on the internet.

  • I’d be really interested in learning how to revert back to 2.80 (if possible). Yes, the FW is not on the HD. You can find 2.80 on the net somewhere. I downloaded it the other day just in case someone had a solution to revert back.

Also, dear Sony, there is no way this is all a coincidence!!! So many people have been affected by this (whether they are posting here or not). I would love to purchase all these great games that are coming out this fall and winter. But my PS3 stopped working the second I downloaded the FW update. Can you at least issue a press release stating that you acknowledge the problem and that your next update will try and resolve? Is that too much? I will not spend $150 to fix myself. I’d rather try and trade it in, but what happens when I bring it in to trade and it doesn’t work? This whole thing is very frustrating.
