Clearly all of the issues that have showed up AFTER the 3.00 and 3.01 updates cannot be blamed on hardware failure. There are some major bugs in the ointment here. These problems need to be addressed by Sony in this Blog ASAP, and their phone reps need to be informed (by Sony itself) of what’s going on. Calling everything an “unkown issue” won’t cut it anymore. If you’re still running 2.80 do not update until these problems have been addressed, or an explanation is given.

I agree, as i’ve mentioned before, i have a 60gb launch unit (north american) and i’m still at 2.80 with no intentions of updating.
it appears that a majority of the consoles affected by the ylod or the dead bd drive are the early to mid launch units (late ’06 – mid ’07)
it’s looking like sony needs to address these issues affecting early units as did microsoft with the rrod / e74 issues.
it’s really starting to look as if sony has some real isssues with the early units.
I have ran that “restore file system” thing at least 5 times. The first time helped. I actually was able to play discs again. Eventually, my drive wasnt able to read any discs. I am mad and I am suicidal. I have a 40gb PS3, BTW. How can i trick the ps3 into running the 2.80 firmware that I have on my thumbdrive? HELP!!!!

I don’t think it’s possible to roll back to 2.80 at all, even if you do have it saved on a thumbdrive. Sorry.
@ 505. I know. I’m just going a little insane here as this is the first ever defect i suffered from a gaming system. I mean i take great care of ps3 and to find that one day it doesn’t work because of a stupid firmware update really pisses me insane. I’m a patient boy so i will wait till sony fixes it. I got a pc to tide me over while i wait.
if you can figure out how to change the date on the 2.8 file to reflect a date newer than the 3.0 or 3.01 release then you can role back – the problem, figure out how to make that change. the file extension is .pup so if anyone in programming has that program or knows what it is, please let the rest of us know so we can go back to our beloved 2.8

Email requests for help to Sony go unanswered, althought they promise to get back to you in 48 hours. I’m sure they’ll figure out a new version of the system update, and I’m also sure that we’ll be having these same problems with even further updates down the road.

@ 494 (Ledgic) You want Sony firmware updates to include everything and be released what every 6 months? That would spell disaster because it would present a HUGE possibility for really bad firmware bugs due to such large levels of code. Such as the current crisis which we’d all like to avoid, right? :)

The reason Sony releases optional firmware updates now is because so many n00bs complained about frequent updates. I for one can appreciate them – they’re free and they improve functionality. Just because firmware doesn’t add new user functions doesn’t mean it’s not doing something important. It just may be adding better tools for developers, and the update allows our PS3 to take advantage of such. Having a slightly better understanding of code than some I know it is impossible to know right away exactly what is causing bugs in the firmware, even with testing. There are so many lines of code that things can go wrong very easily. While I don’t agree that we should be paying out of our pockets to fix problems that may be caused by firmware, I believe we should have faith that Sony will fix this. It just won’t be instantaneous at the snap of a finger.

After reading about the 3.0 issues I’m glad I didn’t update my ps3.. I’ve never had issues and don’t want any.
Has anyone updated directly from v2.80 to v3.01 completely bypassing v3.0? If so, were there any issues and did it change the xmb,friends list and add multiple store icons like v3.0 did?

I think he was just trying to stir the pot. Exactly what point were you making? If Sony didn’t care about its customers it wouldn’t have a userbase, so your claims thus far are baseless. Other than 3.01 ignoring the major complaints it seems to have solves some but obviously not all complaints. It seems the firmware is not causing problems for everything or at least not the same problems for everyone which suggests the problem seems to be the firmware conflicting with certain applications. Since games install on the HDD now, gaming this generation is a completely different ball game from the PS2 days.
Wow, if that last post of mine didn’t make sense it’s because I’m waaaay tired. 3.01 in comparison to say 3.1 means it is a small update. I suspect Sony hasn’t left us to the dogs. I’m sure there will be another update shortly. Keep the faith!

I wonder who are the people getting this problem. I have a launch 60 gigger and the games and blu-rays and dlc all seem yo work just peachy for me. Oh wells. Keep up the great work Sony. It must be tough just trying to please everyone. The only thing I want from Sony is straight up answers. Reasons why the PS3 does not have features that people are asking for. My all time asked for feature would be cross game voice chat/party systems. It’s no deal breaker, as I love my PS3 and it’s my preferred cosole anyway, but I’d like an answer as to why we’re still waiting for this feature. At least something. But ehh, it doesn’t kill me not to have it. In the end, the PS3 arguably has the best lineup of games coming in the next few years so I guess that’s all that matters, right?

I’m guessing that you wish Sony would just re-release 2.80. They won’t do that, it would mean that they have failed. You really think that Sony will admit failure? I mean come on, in order to compete with the install bases of both the Wii and the X360, they actually use the “PlayStation” brand. Not the PS3 brand alone, but they actually bunch up PS2 and PSP numbers to artificially inflate their market grasp. Granted I’m loyal to the PlayStation brand since the beginning. Their attitude since Ken Kuturagi was forced to leave SCEI has been their downfall. They have a massive ego, that I wish they will just address and admit, PS3 is not the system we wanted. Sometimes, you just have to admit your mistakes and failures and then move on. But Sony will never, ever do that. I’m (like everyone else) also disapointed with FW 3.00 and will not upgrade to 3.01 until their puppet Eric will show up again to announce FW 3.10 which will signify to me a major change. As far as FW 2.80 is concerned, you can’t go back as this is the way they designed the machine. But that is not mean they can’t do it. They can always take FW 2.80, re brand it 3.10 and then release it.

I think these are isolated issues. Not everyone is having problems. But there are enough people with problems since the updates were released to make me concerned. Right now I don’t want to take the risk of updating my system, since 2.80 still works perfectly for me.

I posted earlier on my issues under the 3.00 Update Post. I have since downloaded 3.01 in hopes that it would fix my issues with freezing games and blueray disc read errors. It seemed to be working, but I was only able to play games for 10 mins or so at a time as I was very busy the past few days. Last night I attempted to play split screen Zombies on COD: WAW and it froze on the loading screen after we completed our first match. I had to do a hard reset and when restarting once again it was not recognizing any blueray games or movies. It threw some new error codes (which I’m sorry didn’t write down) than the normal 80010514 error that I was receiving with the 3.00 FW. 3.01 did nothing for me. I still own a PS3 that does not “Do Everything”. It just teases me with a few minutes of demo time. It whispers, “Chuck…Chuck, You know you want to buy a slim” NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! I will not give in.
When you replace the hard drive you are required to load the OS from a USB drive. Has anyone tried reformatting their drive? If so, will it let you load 2.80 or does it somehow remember you had a higher version before? Thanks.

Formatting the HDD makes no difference the update process reads the current firmware version and only lets you update with the same or a later one. If you replace the HDD you only need a USB drive if you are restoring a previous backup, this is game saves, music etc, not the OS. It restores a HDD file system from the firmware.
They REALLY don’t want anyone to be able to rollback.

Since you have proven PS3 firmware updates can be catastrophic for many of your users, please consider adding a roll-back feature.
I’d like to be able to determine how many older firmware images are to be retained by my PS3. I’d like to be able to manage these older images as I see fit.
This way, when Sony screws up, users have a way to revert to a previously know-to-be-good configuration. This would help us verify whether an update causes hardware problems, or whether the hardware has failed and warrants us spending even more money on the most expensive game console available.
I am still running v2.80. I do not want to alpha or beta-test the firmware you are sending out. I will, however consider it when there is a decent firmware rollback implementation.
If I can’t restore my PS3 via an archive of stored firmware images accessible through some sort of protected “safe loader” routine, then I’m afraid you’ll have to find a sucker elsewhere.

Not wanting to repeat over and over, but this update is very disappointing.
I don’t think Sony want to listen to us. How hard can it be to make the grey boxes, scrolling ticker thing, font size all optional/configurable.
Come on Sony, you’ve spoilt the PS3. It now feels like a kids toy :(
Really the worst part about this is sony not saying a word, at least let us know if your going to or not going to do [DELETED] all about this. I would really like to just say eff it all and go back to 360 but i’ve just got too much money invested in ps3 games, it makes more sense for me to just suck it up and get a new ps3. However if i do so only to come home and find they now have a fix, well i would lose my [DELETED]. Basically all i want is an answer so i can go back to playing some games.

i’ve updated to 3.01 and got error 8002F147. since then my ps3 is stuck at 69% in the update process and it can’t go back to the xmb.

BoatMisser, thanks for your input. That’s what I was afraid of. The only strange thing is my friend replaced his HD about 2 months ago (40GB no BC model) and it required him to load the OS from USB.
Sony, what is wrong with you?
Whenever you add new functionality to a system, those functions should include an option to disable them, or configure them. This is good business! It’s great that you want to advertise what’s new on the PSN, but you do not have to shove it in our face 5 times across the XMB.
Also, someone from Sony EU posted a Q&A on the EU blog, but why has no one in Sony American brought up this issues yet? Let us know something. Don’t bury your head in the sand.

My question is when will Sony confess that a firmware update can and will cause blueray issues? It has been documented in several articles on the net, that corrupted firmware installs will cause the 80010514 disc read error.

I am not going to say that in all cases it is because hardware failures do occur, but if it occurs immediately after an update, it is highly likely that it was a corrupted firmware install that is to blame. By the way, the Restore File System option that the article suggests does not fix the issue. It may allow a few minutes of play time, but the freezing games and loss of disc recognition continue after performing the Restore File System. Also I would like to mention that reformatting the hard drive will not fix the issue as the firmware is NOT stored on the hard drive, but in flash memory.
The new update should of had the feature where you can listen to music and could also play the game at the same time. I hate that Xbox 360 has that feature and PS3 doesn’t.
P.S.. I hope Sony can get that feature in the future.

i myself am not happy very upset cause its going on 2years ive had the system and ive up in about 500 + dollars into games (20 games)+ 2 remotes i will not spend anymore money on this system untill they fix me and 4 FREE
