It’s confirmed! The PlayStation 3 is now available for $299. Yes, NOW! Today, Kaz Hirai also announced a new, slimmer form factor 120 GB PS3 (available September 1st). SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton shows off the new hardware in this video.

ok, now that i know i will be buying a new ps3 come september 1st.. how can i basically transfer all my saved games/downloaded games and basically all my stuff on my 80 gb ps3 to this new sleek sexy 120 gb ps3
looks like the footprint of the new ps3 is about the same as before. although it is definitely slimmer and not as long, it is definitely wider!
amazing price but not so amazing looks, own two ps3’s if i ever get a third it will not be a slim

its lacking a few things in my opinion. for one, were are the memory and media card slots? are there even any? secondly, i personally prefer to have lights on the front of the console telling me what mode it is in, if there is a disc in or not, etc.
I also like the touch sensitive buttons on the original PS3. And to me, the original PS3 just LOOKS better, i was sorely disappointed when i saw the slim PS3.

Wow. I wouldn’t take this ps3 slim if sony paid me. I am going to go out and buy another real ps3 soon. Don’t anyone find it odd. Sony isn’t giving out any real specs on it. So if the HD fails from Heat then I guess people can not take out the Old Drive and put in a new HD.
Oh Did I say Heat? So let me get this right, The ps3 case is even smaller? hmmm. I can see where this is going. Computer manufacturers always tell people to keep the computer components cool.
And todays good video cards have a fan right on the video chip to keep it cool.
I don’t like it. This was a bad move on Sony part. Making things smaller don’t make it better.
And did anyone else get how many times he said in the video its cheaper?

Besides I like the shinny black. It goes well with my entertainment center and the Shinny Black HD tv.
I have read so many concerned comments, about Sony’s new PS3, and the feature of having an Upgradeable Drive. I think that’s important question to ask, because I personally have my Drive Upgraded to 255 Gigs. I know , I know, you can add more, but for my own sake, I decided to go with something small. Another good question is the PS2 Backward Compatibility. Will I be able to play some of my old PS2 Games, like FF10, Killzone, Etc on the PS3? However, if the PS3 doesn’t, then it’s not a big deal. My third question has to go towards the Blu- ray player in the new PS3. Will it be there! and will it perform at it’s best, since the size of the PS3 is slimmed out. Remember there is small space to fit all these components inside a system. I hope Sony invested it’s time, figuring out where to place all these features. And finally! will the system be able to perform at its peak without any “SYSTEM FAILURE!” God forbid if you are playing Uncharted Two, on your new PS3, and all of a sudden the PS3 freezes and the lights go Red , Yellow… etc, that would really make me, or anyone else upset… Other then that…. thanks for the news Sony! :3
Sony, I am not asking you any questions about this, i am not here to say only $100 dollar price drop?? I am here to congratulate you on this, I know it has been a very VERY hard battle with the media, with “Doomed” articles since the get go, but you are a very VERY SMART company, and have always known what you where doing, i want to apologize for buying the original xbox, i did buy the 360 and HATED the Playstation brand until i had 4 xbox 360’s break in ONE WEEK right around christmas time.i finally took it back and bought my first PS3 over 2 years ago, and Have never regretted it. I love your product, i spend HUNDREDS on the PSN, and Love FREE ONLINE PLAY, I enjoy everything you have done for the customers and fans, you are a true company that cares about their consumers

Good news, I already got three of my friends to buy the old PS3, now I can get all the rest to buy the slim with the price drop. I am ranging war against all other consoles for some reason.
It looks crappy and cheap. I’m still lucky that i’m one of those people that owned PS3 60 w/ backward compatibility.
The only way I’d buy one before my current ps3 dies is if it would play my ps2 games. However, I read not long ago that sony has now got a paten on BC software that supposedly will run from any of the ps3s after installing it.
This sounds great but please can anyone tell me if this new ps3s wil have the same features as the regular ps3 ???? Would it have the same functions and would included the new firmware update ???

The slim is IDENTICAL to the current 80gb PS3 with the exception of size. The only change is another OS will no longer be installable on the system. 2 USBs, Wifi, bluetooth, Replacable HDD, no memory card readers. Specs are online all over the place now.
Great job Sony! This will definitely help those poor helpless souls who are addicted to using the paperweight they like to call a gaming system, even after it red rings 3 or 4 times. Time to show them the light.

People have stated that slim uses a new HDMI chip since you can now calibrate Ps3 with a Bravia remote. Any chance the slims will be able to bitstream HD codecs or is it only PCM like the older models?

Does it make less noise compared to the old skooal PS3? Perhaps it will FINALLY become a pleasent experience to watch movies and tv on the PS33 now.

no power brick at all from the unboxing video on engadget… just a regular power cord
were about 4 years into this generation of consoles and people still want backwards compatability… if u can afford a 300 dollar system than i kno u can buy at least one game… buy R:FOM… still has great online and is dirt cheap now like 25
Well I hope it sells better, because its one ugly duckling. The PS3 honestly went from the best looking system of the 7th generation to the worst looking.
But the price drop and the upgraded HDD are nice, so I hope the cosmetic changes pay off.
why couldn’t they just leave it alone. it was fine the way it was. Yeah, it was the largest of the systems, but how many people really carry this around. Now it just looks a little ugly. They should have kept the same design and scaled it down.

Awesome! Like we didn’t all see this coming, but I’m impressed that they dropped the price for all PS3’s to $299.99. Looks like on Sept 1. I’ll be spending money on my 3rd PS3 (even-though I have two fully functioning PS3’s, one from the original launch.)

About firmware 3.0:
– Please don’t put the PS Store icon under the Video and Games menus. It clutters the menus and the Store already has a sections for these. One entry point ought to be enough.
– Please allow one to disable the news ticker. The mail notification seems fine, though, but why have a box around it? Make it be more discrete, please, like the clock is now.

Any whining and complaining, has now been completely invalidated.
Seriously; both slims, upright and next to each other, will not take up so much space that anyone should have any right or cause to utter a complaint – not word-one.
That said, I, for one, welcome our new PS3 slim overlords.

…The one thing you guys are not understanding and continually to ignore is the issue of backwards compatibility. John Koeller’s recent comments on the lack of BC in the slim just shows how out of touch you are with the fanbase. Not everyone uses the Media Server or Remote Play feature either John but you still felt the need to include it didn’t you? Why? Because it adds VALUE to the PS3’s list of features. Because it adds VALUE for the millions of PS2 owners and potential PS3 owners. Wake up to yourself John.
Why is Bravia Sync exclusive to the new Slim? I bought a PS3 less than a month ago and thought it being a “Sony”, it would work with my Bravia KDL-40W4000 bought last summer, but it didn’t. Now you launch the Slim and update firmware to 3.0 but only include Bravia sync for the slim? Why???
I was informed the original PS3 has HDMI 1.3, so there should be no hardware issue.

This is nice to finnaly get sales going again but why in the UK, that we pay more than the americans. They get $100 dollar price drop and we get £50 price drop, its so stupid. We get the high price in UK but americans get it much cheaper than us. We are paying £250 which is $411. Why jeff that the uk has to pay more for the ps3 slim?
