Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.
Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:
- “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
- Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
- Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
- PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
- Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
- Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

thats not true, there is 3rd party software that is being worked on to emulate the PS2 and a handfulof PS3s use software based BC.
We will see PS2 BC once the sales of the console finally die off and PS2 titles will start apearing on PSN like the PSX Classics we have now.

u droped the ball again this is nice but u need to give the people what they want come up with a way to please these people SONY if u dont start now you are going to lose all ur players to xbox i wouldnt mind if u started charging us for ur online services thats why XBL is getting all there cool new features make a deal with companies like facebook and myspace or hulu if u want to win and make money if u say that this a compter enertainment system then i want proof!!!!!!!!!!!!

GREAT more annoying buttons to cycle through when trying to get to games and videos. having the PSStore under the PSN was perfect because it was out of the way. Why no avatars of our own? Not everybody likes fruity avatars.

– PAL/NTSC support…A MUST!
– Password protection for everything.
– Larger status text and friend sorting / rename options are much needed.

This is great news, hopefully more updates like this come out in future which are worth updating. I am happy about the new avatars and customizations, it would be nice if it had better sound effects when you get notifications and that. Hope the store gets a major rebuild and hope that ps2 compatibility will be unlocked soon.
this is very very cool! i love the changing of time and day themes. still no playing my own music in games though. EVERY ONE PUT ABOUT LISTNING TO YOUR OWN MUSIC IN GAMES.
ooooh, and making it so that if your searching artists in the music section, that the next step after finding the band yyou want, is albums. being able to go on the XMB while playing a PS2 game of dvd would be rely nice too. pretty pleeeeeeeeeease sony. We know you dont have too, and we know you only seem to bring out updates that will make you more money, but maybe if people knew that you concentrated on making the software better, rather than making the playstation store more advertised, people would buy your console! Personaly, everything i own is sony. my phone, my music player my console my TV. unfortunately, sony, not everyone wants quality for there money, they want quantity cougthxboxcougth.

Is there any posibility to add a Greek Character set to fix the problem with the Greek characters being displayed on the system?
I believe that should be something fairly easy for the programmers.
I am talking about the PS3 system and not the web browser.
Cross game chat is something I would really like to have. I’m not hellbent on BC or any of those things, but I would really like the ability to talk to a friend while playing a game.
Please do not implement cross-game chat or custom music!

i was wondering in a future update could you guys add a caller I.D. function so i can screen calls and still play a game without pausing or looking away from screen.and option to turn on and off.if you guys are trying to make ps3 center of my media entertainment. it would really make sense. thank you.sony all the way

This looks like a proper good update, but as ive asked MANY times when will we be able to buy fallout 3 dlc? when will the elder scrolls v be released and will we get the dlc the same day as the Xbox? but even if bot, i will NEVER buy an Xbox 360, always a playstation, lets just hope the next-gen playstation doesn’t have a long delay, but the ps2 was STILL funner than Xbox 360

So with the new update, will there be an immediate selection of animated themes? also, with the avatars will they be customizable? unfortunately, I don’t really spend alot of money on Playstation store, so I will hope these won’t be expensive if they aren’t free.

oh but please add in-game music of our choice,cross game chat. this would be great, but PLEASE KEEP PSN FREE! we paid DOUBLE what the Xbox is so i do not expect to pay MORE money JUST for playing online. This would only drive more customers away to Xbox, making microsoft and bill gates even richer. You are selling 12 million less units than Xbox, do not make it worse by making us pay for online.

This update sounds great, but I wish Sony would add the ability to have Folders for your songs like on the PSP. I want an organized music section, but I can’t do the the limitations of the current format. =( Nice update none the less.

Sony fails to provide what we really want once again. What a shame to watch a company constantly drop the ball over and over again. Maybe some day they will put the right people in charge and start adding the features we want and should have been included when the PS3 launched. Until then, I’ll game on my 360 and watch movies with my PS3.

I hope 3.0 fixes the problem 2.8 caused…I would like to have a game system again instead of a paperweight…I have a 40 gig that worked fine until the 2.8 update…now it wont read any discs :(

@1707: sony will give us this stuff because if we r content we r more likely to spend money, u go into a shop happy u spend more money than if u go in angry or upset, its obvious ans advertisising takes advantage of it very often, its the same rule whn virtual shopping!

Regardless it’ll be nice, I always go back to the default theme dude to it being dynamic and animated, now I will have some better choices :) Reminds me of the HL2 loading screens but with day/night cycles. A Killzone 2 or Resistance 2 theme would look awesome… developers should start packing a theme onto the games disk.
Status indicator sounds much better too, not sure about the ticker though. Didn’t like the last one and didn’t find it at all useful so hopefully it can still be turned off?

Party room and cross game voice chat is the only feature I need added for recent firmware. That’s all I want, guess it’s too much asked?
Not much in this update will be usefull to me as i don’t use theme, i don’t like the sparkles and don’t have any friend on psn. The “What’s new” item is cool. Since 50% of the use of my ps3 is as a media center, I would have like the same internet radio we have on the psp to be added.
I really hope we get a few dynamic themes and new avatars on launch of 3.0. It’s amazing how long it’s taking to get more avatars, so the “in the coming months” is hopefully for more choices. Again though, this should be launching asap. It’s way too long to go with the same 80 or so ugly choices we currently have.
