PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.00) Update

1,985 0

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.

Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:

  • “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
  • Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
  • Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
  • PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
  • Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
  • Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

  • Awesome except for “We’re looking forward to releasing firmware update 3.00 soon.” Why do you do this to us!!!! Giving the release date would be GREAT!!!

  • For the next firmware update please and i mean PLEASE improve the web browser. It keeps freezing my system everytime i use it. I would really appreciate because i love browsing on the ps3. But is really difficult when it keeps freezing. I always delete cache, cookies, history but it freezes anyway. Javascript upgrade would be awesome!!

  • WOW Y NOT HAVE IN GAME CHAT OR PRIVATE CHAT SPREAD THE MESSAGE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • For all those who want BC you shoulda bought the 60 GB version like i had too! It cost more for a reason, or simply just go and buy a PS2 for £20 simples (“,)

  • P.S this is a wicked update (BBC IPlayer!) Woo!!

  • Nice, but what I really want is search engine in folder music. When I want to listen to song for example called ZZZ(and I don’t know release year, author, album) and when I have a lot of songs it takes some time while i scroll list to letter Z. It would be easier if I just wrote ‘ZZZ’ in search window.
    —Implement search engine—

    Thanks :)

  • Changing online ID name without losing saved games, trophy’s, would be nice
Also in-game music would be great!

  • i really want a party chat like what xbox has i sold my xbox to pay for my ps3 and i love every thing about ps3 just i wish it had a party chat

  • The new themes are pretty cool looking. Whatever happened to my own music being able to be in the games like xbox 1 could do maybe even be able to change users without leaving the game?

  • MKV / ISO / etc ..and all other video CODEC SUPPORT please.

This mainly for the people that use their PS3 for media purposes, more so than gaming.

WDTV and Popcorn Hour and PlayOn boxes will be taking us away soon, if we don’t get this support…

Make the PS3 the powerhouse, you want it to be ! :)

    Thanks
    Rob

  • I can not believe that they have not put a in game music feature it has been 3 years and still no sign of this. the majority of ps3 users want this feature it is not much to ask. the 360 has this feature since its release date, it is terrible that a system this superior to all other games consoles does not have a feature small as this. All these updates are just unnecessary improvements that no body really wants, although they are good updates they are just fancy visual updates to the XMB, the in game music feature is what every body wants and is a feature that will be used all the time where as these visual updates will be looked at for a maxim of a minute and then the user will just go in to a game. Since the ps3 release there have been ridicules amount of people comments on forums from users craving for this feature. SONY DON’T BE A IDIOT AND LISTEN TO YOUR USERS!

  • When will RSS be added to the PS3?? PSP has it. You also have on your PS3 console home page access to items that might have RSS as an included ability(Twitter for example)

It would be even better to have a message pop when an RSS has new data.

  • Looks like I’m not the only one looking for sony to get this supported…

    http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?MKV4PS3

Click the number…and see them all

    Later
    Rob
MKV / iso support – Firmware 3.01 please

  • this looks like a huge improvement. its great to see ps is always getting beter. just one thing not mentioned that i hope is going to be included, when in a game, and you want to know the time so you press the ps button, please tell me the clock and the controler batt life meter are no longer overlapping? that would be the icing on what looks like a very nice cake

  • I am still mad because we still haven’t got cross game chating or the join games list where u can join a friend if he is already in a match it seems like sony is taking they time to make there fans happy i’m starting to get very upset because i’m not happy at all with the 3.0 update

  • I love your gaming system and all but please add in in-game music for all games!
I’ve been waiting for ages for this feature. =/

  • @1467 awww poor you!

    whine whine whine!

thanks for another update :) even though it hasn’t been released yet :(

  • I really want to see a party like system added to firmware.

Fighting to get into games by missing inventions is very annoying.

To be able to join friends who are already in games would be so much easier Sony. I hope something like this is planned in the future.

Keep up the awesome guys :)

  • What about multimedia support ???????? I appreciate most of you guys are gamers but many are used as multimedia front ends for HD etc. I want better support for streaming media. WMV and VC-1 etc. It’s crazy that my PS3 can’t play these movies. Photos – great ; music – great; Videozone – great; AVI/WMV/MPG – needs more support/codecs.

Come on Sony, don’t make me buy a popcorn hour when I nearly have the gadget I need !

  • Sweet update. The new animated themes will be interesting to see, and I can’t wait for the new avatars!!! Thank you.

  • Awesome update and everything but PLEASE! add features like cross game chat and stuff. i wonder if they even glance at the comments but i luv ur system sony and everything but please hav these features. u dont charge ur users so i know ur on a budget but plz try

  • that was my first comment on this website and this is my second =)

  • i heared a rumor saying that they may be keeping cross game chat a secret until the last second.

  • do u no what the psp needs? it needs the ability to message friends and view messages. i no u can do that wit remote play but it wud make it much more convinent if everything u needed to contact ur friends was there when u turn on the psp instead of having to go to remote play and connect to that.

  • Sony still loves us! I knew it!
    Outstanding.
Keep up the good work guys.
    PlayStation 3 Forever!

  • it looks badass im not gonna lie but i have some complaints/suggestions

1 lose the psn store icon on every section it doesnt look good

2 will we be able to make our own animated themes or are you guys gonna go evil and pull a microsoft on us?

3 like everyone else i wanna know wheres the cross game chat??? im sure if your people tried that you can easily bring that to us without violating any copyrights

    4 thats all for now

  • this update is a little over due.

  • i want it now!!!!!!!!:-(

  • We probably won’t see this update til September and its obvious they’re still working on it.

  • That looks amazing. I can’t wait for the update. Now all that’s left is mandatory customizable soundtracks. =p

  • For those of you who are asking for BC, you will never get it through a firmware update. The PS3 must have a PS2 game reader (or decoder, whatever) installed the hardware in able to get BC. So for those of you who didn’t buy the first three models, you are out of luck.

  • I agree with jds07-

That’s partly the reason that these newer PS3/PS3 slims (even though they don’t say “slim”) are able to have their price dropped- because they don’t have the extra hardware with them that is required to have BC. I know it’s dumb to not have the original system with a price drop, but something had to be cut to help lower the cost and, well that’s what it is. If they ever start releasing more PSone (and possibly PS2) classics though, I don’t see this being that much of a disadvantage.

Anyways, in terms of the firmware update, I don’t have anything bad to say about this. I LOVE seeing these little FW updates (especially when they actually have a visual impact)- rather than those ones that don’t do anything for us.

One thing that I would like to see added though, is like a little “ticker” under our names for music that we are playing, or movies we are watching. Just like with the games, instead, say I was watching “The Dark Knight”- it shows that I’m watching that, rather than it just taking me offline or not displaying anything. (But that might have something to do with the companies that make the discs and having them being compatible with being recognized by the PS3. Idk really, lol)

  • *Quick fix to my post ^^

** If they ever start releasing more PSone (and possibly PS2) classics (through the PSN store) though, I don’t see this being that much of a disadvantage.

  • I can’t wait. You guys keep proving why Im still a PS fan through and through. Please release it soon!!!!

  • This is my second comment: Now if only PS Home can get into gear.(How bout giving us the same thing every other Home beta has, GEEZZZ!)

  • nice. good job sony, but when can we creat our own avatar and theme sorry if i asked too much.

  • sony yall are makin me mad u need to get cross game chat and party chat with at least 10 people STOP IGNORING YOUR CUNSUMERS

  • any one who said u will never get bc for the new ps3 u r wrong sony is trying to develop software to play ps2 games so everybody who has the new ps3’s can play SOME ps2 games

  • Yess!
This should be a really cool update! :D

  • Some nice ideas for the update but i also feel its to forced like microsoft do, what i would suggest is some settings options to allow us to disable the extra store icons or the ability to have our ps3 startup on any section on the xmb we like, such as game section, video section, psn etc

Also cross game chat is needed, i think its what draws people to xbox live more.

  • For the love of god a release date!!!PLEASE!!!

  • voice chat my friends!!!

  • Sony please add more codec support!!!

    All .WMV and VC-1

    .MOV for Quicktime trailers

    .MKV

    Divx 7

  • Repeat option!!

When watching a video from the PS3 hard drive I would like to be able to have it keep repeating.

    Please add this!

  • Hey, one of the biggest con of the playstation 3 is the unavailability of playing music while in a game session. My question is, will there ever be an update that will allow the playback of music while playing a game? And soon???That’s like of the coolest features that fans would like!

  • The feature I want for a future firmware is to be able to remove the hard disk cache some game install. I am not talking about what we can currently do, remove entirely what the game has installed, let me explain for example with a game like Bioshock

Currently the first time you start Bioshock the PS3 OS tells you that there is an update (200 Mb IIRC), the system installs it and then the game start and it creates a disk cache with information from the blu-ray disk. I can remove the data saved on the PS3 hard disk any time I want, but the next time I want to play Bioshock I need to wait for the update to be downloaded

What I want is an option to be able to delete the game cache without removing the downloaded patches. It would be nice to be able to select triangle over the game data icon and select “Remove game cache”

I know a lot of people will say, “buy a bigger hard disk” and my answer is, I already have a big hard disk, but I want to be able to backup my PS3 in minutes not in an hour, saving to the backup the information that really need to be saved, why do I need to backup to an external hard disk information that is already on my blu-ray disks?.

  • Continuing because reached post limit :-(

I do not know how PS3 games store the information on disk but I presume that there are some conventions about to where to store programs and where to store cached data, follow my thoughts here, If games save information for example as a Linux system do. /usr/bin and /usr/lib for programs /usr/share for data and /var/cache for cached files. this option could be developed as removing files from /var/cache and leaving your programs and extra game data (for example downloaded maps) on disk, but removing the blu-ray cached data from /var/cache

  • -voice messaging
-cross game invites / voice chat
    -ingame music feature

    were all happy :)
