Ratchet & Clank Comic-Con Recap (with Videos!)

149 0

Comic-Con was huge for Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. On Wednesday night, we revealed the winner of the Captain Qwark’s My Blaster Runs Hot contest, the Spiral of Death, and showed footage of the weapon in the game. We also let the press try their hand at the new time puzzles that Clank will have to complete.

Throughout the course of the show, attendees could check out the Krell Canyon demo at the PlayStation booth. There were also photo opportunities with Ratchet himself, as well as swag: an inflatable replica of Ratchet’s Omniwrench 2000.

All of this built up to Sunday, when we revealed all of this and much more to the public in our panel session. Creative Director Brian Allgeier, Project Manager Bryan Bernal, and Writer Todd Fixman were joined by voice actors James Arnold Taylor (Ratchet), Armin Shimerman (Dr. Nefarious), and Joey D’Auria (Allister Azimuth). The panel was moderated by Gamespot Editor-In-Chief Ricardo Torres.

We led off with some exclusive videos that those of you playing at home won’t be able to see until the final game releases, one involving Captain Qwark, and the other an unlockable video about the Agorian Warriors. Allgeier and company then discussed the story, and its theme of “throwing caution to the wind,” especially relating to the effect of Ratchet being with an older Lombax for the first time. One of the early highlights involved a verbal spar between Taylor and Shimerman, using the voices of Ratchet and Dr. Nefarious, respectively, as they sat together on stage talk about Nefarious’s temperament issues.

Discussion then turned to Clank and his whereabouts after being kidnapped at the end of Tools of Destruction. Bernal revealed that Clank is being held at the center of the universe (give or take fifty feet), in a secret facility known as the Great Clock. Clank gains new time abilities and has some brand new indie-inspired time gameplay.

For more about Clank and the first footage of his gameplay, check out this video:

Next came a topic that is a series standby: weapons. The beginning of the discussion centered on the Weapons Contest event that occurred on Wednesday evening. The Spiral of Death was revisited and shown in case attendees hadn’t seen it. Winning fan designer Jackson Finley was recognized by Bernal, and the crowd gave him a huge round of applause. If you haven’t seen the Spiral of Death in action, check this video out:

Torres then moved onto the world reveal of a brand new line of weapons for A Crack in Time, The Constructo weapons. Brian Allgeier discussed how fans really enjoyed the ability to specifically tailor weapons to their own playing-style with modifications in Deadlocked and Up Your Arsenal. He announced two new weapons, the Constructo Pistol and Constructo Bomb Glove, and revealed some mods that longtime series fans will love – the video below shows and explains more.

The voice actors discussed their work on the game and how much fun they have had working with these characters over the years. James Arnold Taylor discussed how Ratchet’s voice is really his voice, and as such it’s really one of his easiest characters to jump into (which he did repeatedly throughout the panel). He also mentioned that it was only during this past year that he met David Kaye, the actor who voices Clank, as game voice actors typically record their sessions separately.

Armin Shimerman told attendees he generally has to take the next day off after recording Nefarious due to the amount of screaming a session involves, especially due to his perception of Nefarious screaming a lot more in this game. However, this didn’t dissuade him from screaming for the audience, including the classic yelling at his butler, “LAAAAAAAAWREEEEEENCE.” Newcomer to the franchise Joey D’Auria discussed voicing the first new male Lombax in the series, and how much he’s learned from the other voice actors, particularly Taylor. He also discussed how Azimuth’s character arc and how impressed he has been with the evolution of gaming as a storytelling medium.

We recently announced that we were partnering with DC Direct to bring fans the first Ratchet & Clank action figures. These long-awaited figures, including Ratchet, Clank, Nefarious and Qwark, were brought on stage to give fans a chance to see them before their release on December 2nd.

Before the Q&A, attendees were treated to the world premiere of the brand new trailer for the game, which you can watch below. The trailer includes the first glimpse at a new level in the game, Axiom City.

Finally, the group then took some fan questions. Highlights included a young fan who asked about the RYNO. Before anyone on the panel could answer, the fan proceeded to remind the panel of what each RYNO from each game did to crowd laughter and applause. Allgeier confirmed the RYNO as well as the Tools of Destruction fan-favorite, the Groovitron, will return in A Crack in Time. A fan asked if multiplayer would be included, to which Allgeier said the team was focused on closing the story arc started in Tools of Destruction and Quest For Booty while creating an epic single-player experience (also bringing applause). Another fan asked if The Plumber would return, to which Fixman revealed that he indeed would.

Everyone on the panel had a fantastic time. We here at Insomniac want to send a big thank you to all of our fans who came to see us and asked questions and came up afterwards to chat with us, ask for autographs, and take photos. We also want to send out a big thank you to James, Armin and Joey for taking the time to participate and see their fans. A huge thank you goes out to Ricardo Torres for moderating the panel, as well. We also are grateful to everyone at Comic-Con for giving us the opportunity and space to present new features and video directly to our fans. Finally, we want to thank everyone at Sony Computer Entertainment who helped put this together, including all of our PR/Marketing folks as well as all of the event folks who helped us out on the floor when trying to hand out thousands of inflatable wrenches.

That’s all for now – we hope you enjoyed this recap of the panel and the videos. Next up for us is GamesCom in Cologne, Germany, where we will reveal a bunch more new stuff, including the first look at our Space gameplay.

We’ll try to answer your questions in the comments – but as I’m writing this from a plane, Bryan Intihar may chime in as well.

Thanks for all your support! It was great to see so many of you at Comic-Con!

  • Awesome stuff guys, I can’t wait for the game, a very big SOLD!!! :D

  • Trailer in 720p right here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC_BNuZsd00

    Looking VERY amzing. :)

  • day 1 for me

    just an awesome game

    so so awesome

  • I can’t seem to find Quest for Booty anywhere. I know it was released, my friend who was an R&C fan even showed me his copy. He bought it of eBay, but I kinda want to buy it in stores, does anyone know where to pick it up? My friend sent me this link btw, and he won’t tell me how to get it besides getting broadband at home and buying it as DLC.

    • Quest for Booty had a VERY limited disc run in Europe. Your best bet is downloading the game via the PlayStation Store.

  • I’ve been a big fan of Ratchet and Clank since its release on PS2. I can say after playing all of them including High Impact’s Size Matters (which was a great addition to the series) this looks like the cream of the crop. My most looked forward to game and believe me I have many games this holiday season pre-ordered :)

  • Great stuff I am in love. AWESOME graphics!!! But where is Tawlyn Cronk and Zypher? Will they be in this game? Can you at least tell us when you will announce if they are in this game or not?

  • lol the not it scene made me chuckle lol. looks really good.

so when are you guys going to make a ratchet movie.

  • IS it true Rachet and Clank is going to have multiplayer???????

i will buy even if it doesn’t………

  • Ah, the funny has come back into my life. However, I may have to just stop watching this trailers- I know you guys talked about avoiding spoilers on the Full Moon Show, but I still feel like too much is being given away… Gameplay is more than fine, but cutscenes… Well, thanks for stopping by. :)

  • will armor play a role in this game? i have seen what looks like the same armor in the trailers just in different colors so will we be able to color it like the new Constructo weapons? it could be cool to see different parts like in Size Matters but the only problem with the Size Matters armor was that the color of the parts did not match each other (unless it was a complete set)

  • Thanks for the Post! It was a really good read and I am glad to see that ACIT is coming along nicely.

I did have one or two q’s. The first is, well, I am really glad that you are bringing Nefarious back. However, Nefarious is nothing without his trademark soap opera interludes and Lawrence the butler. Are both of these back?

The other one relates to the technology behind the time. I was very dissapointed with ToD and QfB’s graphics. Not so much in resolution but that everything seemed to be very undetailed. A lot has been said how the Ratchet & Clank games are the equivelent of Pixar movies. So I guess my question would be, Would you say that ACIT is the best looking Ratchet game, if you would agree that there is a general lack of detail in the environments and what you have done to improve on the previous games, presentation wise.

Thats pretty much it. One more thing though. Insomniac releases a new game each year. Would you say this is a good thing, as it allows you to stay fresh, or a bad thing, as you’re working to a strict timetable and it doesn’t allow you enough time to work on your games as you would have liked?

Also, Will ACIT feature any kind of Home intergration or tie-ins etc.

    Thanks!

    • To answer some of your questions:

      1. Nefarious–we don\’t want to give too much away. You\’ll need to play the game to find out more.
      2. We\’re extremely proud of our visuals and definitely believe this will be the best-looking Ratchet we\’ve ever released.
      3. We haven\’t announced anything yet related to Home, but we\’re well aware that it\’s a very popular destination for the PS3 community that\’s only going to get bigger.

  • so who won the short comic sketch that you guys put before?

  • I cannot bloody wait for this.

    Looks beautiful as expected.

Resistance is fun and all, but the current-gen Ratchet offerings from Insomniac blow my mind.

  • yay VIDEOS but it’s to bad there’s no multiplayer or is there? O.o

  • Love the vids , loved the humor in the 3rd one.

Just one question, will ratchet have new flying/gliding gear to make up for Clank being absent from his back ?

  • FRAGILE EAGLE! haha

THose cut scenes look awesome.vI’m definitely buying this the day it comes out. Can’t wait. I have one question, with the new Clank missions how much longer will crack in time be compared to Quest for booty and tools.

  • Also, will you be making any guest appearances on anamoly before the end of the year?

  • AMAZING POST, INSOMNIAC! Please excuse my all caps, I’m a big fan.

  • You might have finally convinced me to pre-order something. :)
Also, I understand if you can’t say, but how long is the duo going solo?

  • Very cool thanks for answering all of your burning questions :D

  • “…specifically tailor weapons to their own playing-style with modifications…”
*COMMENCE DROOLING AND INTENSE SEPARATION ANXIETY*

  • Oh, and back up, there isn’t a set release date? BLAST! GAME CRAZY, YOU LIED TO ME ON YOUR ONLINE WEBSITE AT THE ADDRESS http://WWW.GAMECRAZY.COM AND THIS YELL IS GETTING EXTREMELY LONG-WINDED… *gasp* …LAAAWREEEENCE!

  • hey guys @ insomniac..this game looks great..and im sure it will be..BUT i wonder why..ooh why haven’t you guys made this game a 2player co-op.. seriously..im sure MOST if not ALL of your fans will love to team up with a friend and play as ratchet or clank! hopefully you great guys and gals in insomniac can work something out..besides your the best game designer EVER!..or the best 5 atleast..lol

  • Are there going to be any night sequences, like there was with Quest for Booty?

  • @54 DarkChaosBunny if you live in the US and you want a disc based copy of Quest for Booty, as I understand it you pretty much have to get an import copy. I’ve had a positive experience with importing titles from Plas-Asia (that said I do live in Australia and not the US). But at the moment Q4B is back ordered.

  • wow thumbs up insomniac, ratchet and clank acit looks great.

1 big question you guys mentioned that acit will end the future trilogy consisting of TOD and QFB will there be more ratchet titles after that?

Please say yes R&C is like the most creative game i’ve ever played this is proven with this new time gameplay and i was especially astounded by the constructo glove and blaster this takes the customization to the next step reminds me of deadlocked which i loved mainly b/c of the customization.

if you guys make another r&c title after resistance 3 can u make every weapon customizable like deadlocked but change them visually as well kindoff like combine r&c UYA where the weapons looked a little different every new level and deadlocked where the customization comes in. doing this will be amazing and add a whole new twist to ratchet and clank

  • Good post.

  • o and one more note if not co-op PLEASE add multiplayer since you guys have bigger maps now it will be a bit easier to make them into online maps for us.

  • So… who won the comic contest?

  • When is the next podcast?

  • Will we be able to play as Captain Qwark, THE GREATEST VIDEO CHARACTER OF ALL TIME?

If not, can we have him as future DLC?

  • excellent , day 1 buy for sure ( a collectors edition would be perfect ) , to Jeff i hope there will be a Ratchet released date countdown like Uncharted 2 too , im still waiting for ND to announced the Collectors Edition to preorder U2

  • i no its way to early too tell but will most of ACIT’s trophies b skill points that u hafta earn in the game?

  • Looks great, Ratchet and Clank is one of my favorite series.

  • Hey Bryan, I am a longtime fan of the series. I think ACIT will be an amazing single player experience. I am unclear, is there no multiplayer? If not please take another year to create/develop such a mode.

In addition pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaase just comment to Ted Price about taking more time on the single player for Resistance 3. No it hasn’t been annouced but we all know its coming.

  • Alright so, I know you guys are focused on the single player but will there be multiplayer?
Sorry about the constant repeat question but all the answers and vague and might be a possible yes….

Also, you say there is more Clank gameplay then in any other R&C title. How much more? Since in the other games there was barely any Clank levels. So…..90%/10% or…85%/15%?

  • this game looks incredible i can’t wait to play – when will the demo be available on the ps store

  • I so hope that this older Lombax is NOT Ratchet’s father. I know the “Ratchet and Clank” stories are not the selling point but this would just be a terrible cliché.

  • Woot! I’m famous! My weapon, the Kitty Launcher, got mentioned in the second video at the 00:32 mark! Hell yea!

  • Will Lawrance’s Voice Actor be the same?

  • will there be enough new weapons to make the game feel fresh? all these returning weapons makes the game feel like a rehash.

  • Can you please tell me if the playstation home preorder bonus will come out for canadians? I’ve bought all your games since spryo 1 and I feel like you guys don’t really care about me or other canadians.

  • Spiral of Death reminds me of the blade gun for some reason! Some of the ideas you posted on the blog were much better :)

Looking and sounding awesome though, can’t wait for it

  • Sony wtf is wrong with PSN the last 2 nights, I’ve been getting disconnected from PSN in the middle of gaming several times really getting annoying…

  • I think it was a little lame to pick the worst of all the weapons designed for the contest.

You basically copped out of doing actual work and chose a weapon you already basically had done the work for in another game…you chose the most unoriginal weapon, and for that Insomniac should be ashamed.

You didn’t chose any of the others because “they would require a lot of work to get right”. Well, hard work pays off, and your lack thereof this time, certainly shows the converse of such a statement.

  • Absolutely awesome. You guys at Insomniac are among my favorite developers of all time, keep up the great work!

Also questions for James or Bryan.

Will the mods for the constructo line work on, maybe some of, the other weapons as well?

I see Qwark is hanging around Ratchet, does that mean he’ll be an AI partner fighting along side (hiding behind) Ratchet in the game?

    also Qwark playable perhaps?

  • Wow no online, epic fail. I was really look forward to this game but now it doesn’t have online just looking forward to Modern warfare 2. Its been 5 years since R&C has had online and this is how they are going to close out the series? Online makes the game last forever not story mode… you can make a epic story and a good online…. I’m going to buy it day one and play the story mode but online is where it is at it’s best…

  • I have got to say i was not very hyped for this game at first, i think it was because i didnt enjoy quest for booty as much as i would have liked, but this slew of new info has got me back in the ratchet and clank craving state. The humor, customization, community integration, the graphics, hell just everything looks great. Cant wait, keep up the great work insomniac.

  • god i cant wait for this game to come out!!!! XD XD XD

  • Bryan,

I am very satisfied with your blog post. The game looks terrific judging by that new trailer there. However, i must ask something. I felt rather underwhelmed when playing R&CF: ToD as the first game i purchased with my shiny PS3. I mean, yeah, the graphics were much better than anything I had seen on PS2, however i was not as impressed with the story, the characters, and the humor. I remember absolutely loving R&C UYA, because it had all of what i thought ToD was lacking. I like what i’ve seen so far with ACiT, but i would like to know what your opinion of it is compared to ToD.

    Thanks in advance,

    PF
