  • Maybe this adds support to use the Ad Hoc Party app (that’s available in Japan) for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite’s launch this week?
And also allows Ad Hoc Party to run on a 20GB that doesn’t have built-in wifi (yes there are some of us 20GB’ers still out here!!)
I mean Sony got remote play to work on the 20GB, why not Ad Hoc Party?!
One can dream I guess :'(

  • See, when you don’t detail, you make the press wonder wtf is going on with the update and when that happens we get this:

Well, apart from oddly locking the Microphone level to 3 (you can’t change it now) on the surface it appears the update has done nothing at all. However, a post from Gaming Age’s Jim yesterday suggests that whatever the firmware has updated behind the scenes, it’s purely for developers right now. “It has at least one thing in it that people will want,” he said, “but the feature won’t be immediately useful.”
    -thesixthaxis.com/2009/06/24/firmware-280-for-developers-only/

No one knows what we want, all I want is to download files NO MATTER what. I know, its lame, but I want to play PS2/PS3 (offline games/singleplayer)/DVDs/Blurays while a download is in the background.

It is so annoying downloading Qore and having to leave the living room to another room to watch a DVD while it downloads.

I’m not being a jerk, I just want to know if that is too much to ask for?

  • Retrocompatibility with ps2 games and support to mkv video.

  • Great – another update that takes forever to download and install which does nothing but make Sony feel it’s keeping one step ahead of pirates (you guys do realize that’s all these micro-updates are for don’t you?)

  • Only that, that’s it? Stop wasting my time telling me about updates that blow. Is playstation ever going to reach the bottom of this hill.

  • oh great noo we have to wait MONTHS for another MINOR update :(

when will have a REAL update?

  • oh great now* we have to wait MONTHS for another MINOR update :(

when will have a REAL update?

  • I wonder what 3.0 will bring!

  • I also want to add support for background download while playing a game in offline mode or single player mode without a download paused.

  • Sony usually i would mention what i would like to see in the update but i realize that you are not paying me the millions to work for you and even with free advise from a lot of us about what we would really really want for our PS3 experience it seems to matter not to you guys. That or you really cannot do things which we would really really want or would make PSN experience more enjoyable.

I just hope this update has no crapy add-ons such asa Google search or twitter crap we have a subpar browser for that.

  • @364
MKV is NOT a file system it is a container.
It can contain all kinds of different format audio and video that the PS3 might not be able to play.

Go download tsMuxeR from smlabs then mux your MKV to M2TS and the PS3 will play it providing the audio and video formats can be played back by the PS3.

  • @373 @395
    smlabs tsMuxeR
    GO DOWNLOAD IT!
If the video and audio formats contained in your MKV files are compatible with the PS3 mux it into an M2TS file and copy it to the PS3.
    Done deal!
I have over 300 GB of video on my PS3 in this manner.
If you need help contact me …

Stop asking for MKV support, it won’t happen, and for good reason. The MKV container can hold a vast selection of audio and video formats that require different codecs to decode and Sony is NOT going to implement every such codec into the PS3.

The solution is right in front of you!

  • I downloaded the update…but did not check what it did…I know I had some issues with infamous when playing the Hero Mode…I received all of the upgrades, received all of the dead drops and beat the 2nd boss and I did not get trophies for each one…so i will check when i get home…

  • Guys and Gals, stop attacking people that run this blog. If anything they are the only ones really in touch with the gamers.

From what I heard and read, the firmware development and updates come from SCE “JAPAN”. Just like most of the Japanese developers…they are totally out of touch on what the majority of gamers want. They can’t even fix the damn clock / battery display overlap….LOL

SONY should just hand over the PS3 firmware development, maintenance and updates to SCE “AMERICA” or “EUROPE”. But that will never happen…because the SONY JAPAN runs the show and they are stuck in they own little bubble from the 90’s. I bet that is probably one of the many reasons why Phil H. left a few years ago.

  • Are we “EVER” getting voice chat or voice messages?

  • sony tell us more, what games have been improved ?

  • “The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.” – Eric Lempel

It is hard to remember the last Firmware update I could get excited about. Is this all?

What happened to the promise of great content in Firmware updates each quarter after all of the complaints on the updates as you go of old (which I liked)?

I don’t want to sound bitter, but the nothing Firmware updates are getting old. Where’s the beef?!

  • Is psn down?

  • Waste of time… And bandwidth.

  • Nemesishunter420

Wow yet another weak firmware update.

Wow another 400 posts about complaints and ideas about what we want, and no reply from Eric (again).

    Getting old.

  • Um, this update is lackluster.

Sony you know what to focus on.

I’m very patient, but lets see some of that stuff.

  • Multi-login

  • IMAGINE if the 360 never launched?? We would have never been exposed to the cool features such as cross game invite, cross game chat.. achievements/trophies…and much more. Which means right now the PS3 would have a boot us screen similar to the PS2’s….LOL

Competition is great. It forces close minded companies such as SCEJ to evolve with the times or be left in the dust.

  • Please include PSP adhoc party! This is the only thing I am waiting for to give my PSP new life. So far with the new PSone classics I am starting to enjoy PSP again. – Thx a lot

  • What does this do?

  • @414

    Please elaborate.

Resistance 2 already has multi-psn login, and that was added several months ago, so that’s not new. I think the support for that was added in FW2.60 (January)

  • I think Sony should do a little better communicating firmware changes. Not just while updating the firmware, but here in blogs…or if they want to spread the info around on other blogs such as kotaku or engadget or whatever. There’s no excuse for this. What is the point saying you’re going to update the firmware and it’s going to improve some gameplay. I mean isn’t that what ALL firmware do…to try and improve something. Who the hell going to make it worse on purpose? So with that….how about list out what game it improves it’s not going to take that much more time to list things out.

Second, people asking for ingame this and that…Whatever you add must be taken away from your gaming. The ps3 might be a powerful machine but there’s not much RAM. All that xmb access during gameplay must be in memory at all times so the more options you have will take away from your gaming experience. There are a few things we should be able to do…but lets not get out of hand.

  • C’mon guys, at least give us some sort of patch notes. What you posted here is just as helpful as saying “it does stuff”. I’ve seen high school students write better patch notes than this garbage.

  • @ 419… I agree with you. I also think that the RAM is the main proble.
I bet if developers would have had a saying in it during the developement of the PS3, they would have asked for more RAM instead of a Blu Ray player in the box.

  • This is becoming a joke, somehow i dont think u guys can implement any more features.

  • @416

just download from the jap store and use it on your main account , i do it for dissidia and hts6

  • give me in game voice chat for [DELETED] sake atleast give us voice messegging

  • Eric Lempel and Sony, 2 Questions:

    1. Where is cross-game voice chat? This is the last item PS3 is really missing!

    2. Why when a firmware update patch fix like this is released is it so Top Secret? There should be better communication with us (your customers).

  • updates are always good! :-)

  • Maybe the PS3 is maxed out, thats why we can’t get anything new for the console. No cross game video chat…..no cross game invites….weak really, its like the apple iphone 3gs, adding stuff a normal tel had 5 years ago.a 3 MegaPixel camera, with video……WOW.

PS3 is the same, adding stuff the XBOX had 3 years ago, and even now, after 2 years of moaning we still are stuck with the same old rubbish.

Eric, what do you have to say about this???? Oh wait, nothing as ususal…….LOL

  • Every comment is the same and everyone answers you.

@424: The reason its ‘Top Secret’ is because Sony Japan does the updates. They choose to be super secret.

You guys whining isn’t going to fix anything. If you think Sony is ignoring you now, I wonder what you thought during PS2?

You know, when they didn’t have a blog that let you whine?

  • While I love firmware updates because they give us new features or better speed to already existing features, I cannot believe the charging icon still overlays on top of the clock.

I am also looking forward to cross-game voice chat, as well as an updated and more robust friend list. I hope that new avatars are in the works too.

And how about portable ID’s? SCEE at least has something (still not totally what it needs to be).

With all of that said, thank you for providing us with frequent firmware updates. Anything is better than nothing.

  • @401

My background downloads continue on even when im playing a game that doesnt require online.

  • With this many posts, I would expect to see at least some input/feedback from the Sony folks on the Blog..

The vauge statement for this update, just begs for the Player Community to ask questions.

Perhaps stating the information more clearly, or engaging Us on the Blog would help to alleviate PS3 user’s dissatisfaction.

  • Ever since fw 2.40 which was July of last year have been nothing but garbage. So for a whole year, nothing has happened which leads me to believe that Sony isnt really focused on fw updates.

  • No problems updating to 2.80. Curious what other fixes or features if any were included.

  • @371 WestSiide
yes I am being force into downloading these updates because I love playing online games such as Sacred 2 and Killzone 2 with my friends. Oh and lets not forget that I am a Qore member and I need to download a episode a month. how exactly will I be able to download my episodes if I am unable to access the store? Like I said, I do not have a problem with the updates, I would just like to know what exactly it do or do not do.

  • @431 infamousXX87XX
They are more focus on security updates to make the PS3 more difficult to hack. Because of that, it causes unseen problems that need to be fix in future updates.

  • hey everyone!! i just wanted to know if facebook and twitter will be added in a future firmware?

  • Eric: close the blog when theres a firmwire.
bunch of whiners…. imagine them in real life.. lol poor of their families!

  • Does this firmware update include a “Disable trophies feature”? Unless you include that I’m not all that interested in 2.80, sorry. Trophies are stupid and the 360’s achievements is one reason I pretty much dumped my console and began converting my game library to PS3 where possible.

  • @435 uknowwho007MN
you can already use Facebook and Twitter on your PS3 web browser.

  • Some people here don’t understand that Sony IS very aware about what we gamers want. But things like cross-game voice chat are not that easy to support due to RAM problems. PS3 OS uses a lot of RAM and Sony is trying to reduce RAM cost from time to time. Still, not enough. Cross-game voice chat and other functions would cost a lot of RAM, wich means less RAM for games, so performance would take a hit. So, it’s not about them knowing what we want, cause they know.

  • how about playing music while playing the game at the same time.they need to get this one bad.

  • wow we move up like .1 and just got this?
